Setting up secure chatting without a MobileMe account

Hi
Some experimenting lead me to believe that it is indeed possible to setup iChat 4 to sign and encrypt messages without a MobileMe account.
1. Open Keychain Access
2. From the Keychain Access menu, choose Certificate Assistant > Create a certificate…
3. Select Self-Signet Root and check Let me override defaults
4. Click Continue until you come to the section Extended Key Usage Extension
5. Notice the iChat Signing and iChat Encryption options
I am just curious, have anyone managed to actually setup secure chatting in a non-MobileMe chat account? Such as Jabber? Where do you get the certificates from? (I know self-signed certificates wouldn’t work.)

Hi,
AIM allows several form of Encryption and the Apple MobilMe and the previous .Mac system are allowed.
There are Add-ons for AIM itself but I have not looked into whether they use sites that create certificates iChat can use.

  • Can Mac OS X Server can do the same as MobileMe but without a MobileMe account ? (It seems to me that it is not clearly mentioned which function require a MobileMe account.

My interest for this server it would be to have the same function as MobileMe but without it.
    Best regards.
    Camille

Which features of MobileMe are you looking for specifically?
OS X server does allow you to host e-mail, contacts and calendars (including syncing between devices). You can also do web hosting, as well as file storage. How well all of these services work will depend on the type and speed of your internet connection. Most "home" ISPs do not allow you to run a mail server, and will block the ports required to do so.
You will not be able to use the "Find My iPhone" service through OS X server, although Apple has already made that free to use without a MobileMe account.

  • How do I push contacts back to my Macbook Pro without a MobileMe Account

    Hello -
I accidentally deleted my contacts from my MacBook Pro (have no idea how I did that) and my most recent back up file is about 1 month old (my fault) but I really need to get the lastest version back onto my computer. I have an updated, clean set of contacts on my iPad2 and my iPhone 4. I can't figure out how to synch back to my Mac - push this set of contacts back to my computer. I read a related support post, but the problem is I never had a MobileMe Account - The provided solution required one. Now, I can't sign up for a MobileMe account even if I wanted to because of iCloud.
So, my question to you out there is how can I synch my contacts back from either my iPad2 or iPhone4 to my MacBook Pro but without a mobilMe account?
Thanks in advance for your help.

  • How does one send mail without a MobileMe account?

A friend has a new iPhone and can't send e-mails from Mail on her phone. I have always had a me.com addy so have never had to do this. Can someone please either tell me what to tell her or point me to an online reference for her? Thanks!
(I *have* told her to go into her service provider and get them to help her but she never has time. I assume her contract comes with an e-mail addy but I have NO idea what it is and neither does she. The provider is Telus in Canada)

The point of that box is to be able to specify the SMTP settings for the outgoing mail server for that particular mail account. If I am setting up a MobileMe account I need to set up the incoming and outgoing servers specifically for that account, not an incoming server for [email protected] and an outgoing server of [email protected] They are different accounts.
For the mail app on a Mac you can set up multiple accounts in mail (but all with matching incoming/outgoing servers for that account) and when you receive an email to one account it has a drop-down box that lets you respond from a different account if you desire. Perhaps in iOS 5 they will add this feature.
It is not a two-step process: You set up the Gmail account, such as [email protected] It will do it automatically, you actually don't have to go in and specify an incoming and outgoing server. Then if I send an email to [email protected] she reads it and if she wants to reply she does so and it replies from the [email protected] One step.

  • Is using iWeb without a MobileMe account futile

I have no need for a MobileMe account so it's way overpriced compared to an average host.
I was able to do this much - publish an iWeb site to a local folder and use my Mac as a host (This shouldn't matter but I used the Safari server with MAMP - i.e. Macintosh Apache MySql PHP) to get more functionality than the one with Leopard. Using Port forwarding allows the Mac to be a host, but obviously this isn't a good solution if you understand IP. The RSS and Podcast features worked except for the comment functionality and the search didn't, but I can work around that.
I started out using this method because the only other publish option was "Publish to a folder". (which you select on your local file system) I really want to publish to a remote host. I don't know of any way to do this here, but perhaps there is:
So one question is: Is there a way on Leopard to make a folder a kind of alias for an HTTP address:? Or some other clever method of using publish to folder publish the files to a host via HTTP.
Mobile networking is a huge trend and Apple shouldn't have to shut out the few of us that don't want it now by not having a publish feature in iWeb that allows you to use a host of your choice. It doesn't matter why iWeb was written this way. I'm just really frustrated because it's a waste of 80$ for me if I can't get this to work.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, because I'd certainly like to be wrong about this. But not including a publish feature that allows you to select a remote host seems rather suspect.
Ok, I had what I thought was a very acceptable and reasonable workaround, which has very desirable features. I came up against another limitation that I find really hard to live with, if I can't find an easy workaround. iWeb generates a lot of files in a folder structure. So, I tried reading them into Adobe Dreamweaver (which is by far the best XHTML editor available and adheres to the newest w3c standards.) When I tried this, half of the site just didn't work, and the scripting was not functional in IE 7. I'm sure tons of other stuff doesn't work and I didn't even bother to go through it all. Using Dreamweaver would allow me to publish to a host of my choice and it would also allow me to do things that iWeb can't do.
I like iWeb, especially for it's podcasting implementation, but it's obviously is very limited. I always assumed that since HTML is such a ubiquitous and well established standard that I just assumed iWeb HTML could be read with most any HTML editor, especially Dreamweaver. If I wanted any advanced functionality I could get it there, and use iWeb for the podcasting and simple sites.
Is iWeb so proprietary that it's generating HTML and supporting files that can't be edited in a product as superb as Dreamweaver? Has anyone had any luck editing the files produced by iWeb in another HTML editor? I would have thought this was a given.
I'm hoping that someone can give me some workarounds. Otherwise, it will confirm my theory that Apple is forcing MobileMe as a host for iWeb sites, which is really restrictive and unnecessary.
This is extremely frustrating and so if anyone has any workarounds to these problems, I'd really appreciate hearing them.
Otherwise, I just wasted 80$ on iLife, which I don't appreciate. And if getting iLife 09 is the workaround, I think I'd need to be convinced that it can both publish to any host and that it produces files that are compatible with Dreamweaver to even consider it.
    Thank you for your help,
    -Frank

    fpatrick08,
My 2 cents, I though about getting mobileme service but the $99 per year stopped me. After I got my hosting with another company I found out that amazon sell the service for $69 per year. I still do not use mobileme but with Cyberduck and some work around it work pretty decent. You can see it by yourself here: http://www.wesdotphotography.com/Home.html
    Hope this help

  • Lost Contacts and without a MobileMe account..

Hi, Just yesterday I've lost all my contacts suddenly on my iphone 3GS. I read for many ways to recover it, it all say to recover them from a MobileMe Mail account, but I do not have a mobileme account and i've not synced my phone to my itunes for backup before. Is there any way for me to recover my contacts? In my Mails, Contacts and Calender settings, i'm only connected to my hotmail. Will there still be stored backup somewhere on the server or something? Because the contacts just disappeared and have yet to return. Please Help!

She obviously has a MobileMe account or there would be no MobileMe account to disable on her iPhone. And if her contacts are now gone, this means she was syncing contacts over the air on her iPhone with her MobileMe online address book. When turning contacts off for over the air syncing on the iPhone and when deleting or disabling the account on the iPhone, contacts synced over the air go with it or are removed from the iPhone.
Her contacts should be available with her MobileMe online address book unless she signed up for a MobileMe trial account for 60 days and didn't purchase the account allowing it to expire.
Regardless, her contacts should be available on her computer as well. If the contacts are available in an address book app that is supported for syncing contacts with the iPhone, she can sync contacts direct with the supported address book app on her computer via the iTunes sync process.

  • Can use iweb and publish sites without a mobileme account?

I have a old imac and it died and I lost all of my websites and Im afraid that I cant republish the websites without a mobile me account… anyone know what I can do ?

When you 'lost your websites' do you mean you lost the 'Domain' file in your User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder? iWeb keeps all its information there and if you do not have it you will have to recreate your site from scratch. If this is the case I would most strongly advise not using iWeb - it's not been sold or supported for some time now, and indeed v2 ('08) does not work with Mavericks: v3 may stop working on a future update. There are many other programs for making websites - Everweb is popular and is designed to be very like iWeb, with more facilities.
If you do have the Domain file then you can publish to any website hosting service as outlined by Old Toad. There is a more detailed description of the process for the two different versions here:
    http://wilmut.uk/missing2
However if you are going to use iWeb remember that as I said a future system upgrade may very well break it; and you would find it very difficult to update the site by editing the published pages in the absence of being able to use iWeb and the Domain file.

  • How can I sync email, contacts and calendar between computers and phones without a mobileme account?

I recently added a macbook pro, ipad and imac to my work accounts and I'd like to be able to sync all of them together.  I believe the POP server that my company is using (small start-up) does not support this.  Basically, if I read email on the laptop, it does not show as read on the imac or my iphone.  If I send a message from one, it does not show up on the other devices.
I figure there has to be a solution - it's driving me crazy basically having email in 3 different locations and none of it matches.
Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

I have found that syncing my contacts then un-syncing them results in my current contacts retaining all the info and picture from Facebook.  I just don't have the Facebook updates, which I'm happier about anyway.

  • I don't have a MobileMe account, and, after the iCloud transition, how will I use iWeb?

??? I want to publish my site to the web. HELP!!!

Well, how have you been publishing your site before now without a MobileMe account?
You need to go and purchase a domain name and hosting space with a company such as http://www.godaddy.com or http://www.hostexcellence.com and publish your site here.
    It is really very simple.

  • "Security policy error" while setting up "Microsoft Exchange Hosted Services" Exchange Account (corporate user)

I'm a corporate user with a very large company that is using Microsoft Hosted Exchange services actually hosted by Microsoft employees at their facilities.  I called Palm support and they were clueless and zero help.  The lady pointed me to some Palm KB article that I had already read and only remotely had anything to do with my problem.  I see nothing on this error message in the forums and google searches. Sprint has even replaced my palm pre due to other reasons and the same error occurs after I configure the exchange account. I'm also seeing the error when I configure my account on my wifes brand new pixi. Both our pre and pixi already have exchange accounts successfully configured on our phones that are hosted by sherweb. The sherweb exchange accounts work without issue. I have tried configuring this microsoft hosted exchange account 5-6 times with the same result. It accepts my configuration information and adds it to the list of available email accounts in the pre. However, it keeps popping up this message stating "Security policy error: "Exchange... Tap for details" (with a yellow exclamation mark). Then it says "Security Policy Error" The account Exchange (first part of my email address) is disabled because security policies cannot be set." "Leave it disabled" or "Remove Account". I know something is working because it enforced a Password or Pin policy on to my phone which is not required unless this account has been added. I can also see it in the "Mobile Devices" section of web outlook when I login. This is the place in web outlook where you can see the last time the device synced, where you can remote wipe the phone etc. If anyone has any idea how to resolve my issue please post. Any ideas? I'm fresh out of ideas on this problem and very frustrated with Palm Developers. Just another example of poor development and testing practices by Palm. I hope they correct this issue on subsequent releases but I am only marginally optimistic that they will ever get this exchange mail support to the level necessary to support large corporations. What I do know is that my Microsoft Hosted Exchange account works fine on a Windows Mobile phone and a iPhone 3GS (confirmed by other coworks who have configured their phones using our exchange services). As a result, I have no choice but to blame Palm for this problem instead of Microsoft. Palm please fully support microsoft exchange mail users!!!!

From my understanding of EAS and PDA devices, if the server as a policy to enforce and the device cannot provide that policy then the server will not allow the device to connect. The KB I gave you has a listing of what policies the devices supports, if your server supports more than that then it could deny the connection. As for what the iPhone does and does not do we cannot answer that due to we are not iPhone.
I did find an article that may explain a little better for PDA and exchange: http://www.infoworld.com/d/mobilize/how-avoid-smartphone-exchange-policy-lie-004

  • I had a MobileMe account before... after upgrading to iOS 5, should I keep my account info under iCloud (settings) AND under mail, contacts and calendars (in Settings as well) or only keep the info under the new iCloud setting section?

I had a MobileMe account before... after upgrading to iOS 5, should I keep my account info under iCloud (settings) AND under mail, contacts and calendars (in Settings as well) or only keep the info under the new iCloud setting section?

That's not the correct port. It should be 993 for incoming.
If you signed into iCloud from the System Preferences, it should automatically create the iCloud account for you in Mail. Sounds like it is an account you already had set up for MMe in Mail.
Open Mail preferences, open the Accounts tab, disable that account in the advanced pane.
Open Sys Prefs, open the iCloud tab, and sign out of iCloud. Then sign back in and see if a new iCloud account is automatically created.
