Setting up shared drive

I want to attach an external mirror drive to my G5 iMAC to use as a time machine back up and shared drive.  I have my computers networked as shared over an airport extreme.  So here are my questions.
When setting up the shared drive on my other macs I have to input the computer name and password.  Does this prevent anyone else from accessing the computers and drives?
What Apple format do I use to format the drives?  Journaled, GUID, etc.
Can I or will I be able to use the external drives as iTunes media central file?  Meaning can I stream a movie to one mac and listen to iTunes on another?
Is there a better or more simpler way to do this?  I do not know anything about NAS? or how else to accomplish this with what I currently know.
Thanks.

I ended up splitting the drive into two partitions. One is shared through the Server Preferences using Time Machine. The other is used locally to backup the server itself. No more problems of extended preparing stage. I think it was doing that because the server detected changes to the drive when other backups were made, and it was just checking for changes.

  • Trying to set up shared drive

I am working on a MacBook Pro - connects to a wireless network via airport extreme but can't seem to connect my G4 tower as a shared drive. I have the USB connecting the two but can't locate. Please help....

Sorry but your post isn't clear.
Are you trying to share a drive which is connected directly to the Power Mac G4?
I have the USB connecting the two but can't locate.
When you say "the two" what are you referring to? What do you have connected via USB?

  • Setting up a shared drive

How do you set up a external shared drive for a home network? I have a 1TB external and a 2 TB time capsule. I have a 24" IMAC wich has my Recording Studio soft ware on it. (Pro Tools, Logic Studio) running snow lepoard. I have a 21.5" IMAC which is my main surf the net and do some work desktop running Lion, and I have a 17" Macbook Pro for portability which means mostly laying in bed and surfing the web running Lion. 13" Macbook running Lion. Sony Viao 17" Laptop running Vista. Also have the IPhone 4S. Here are some of the things I would like to do.
    1.   Share photos, have a large suppository where the photo files can be accessed by any of the machines using Picassa (or suggest a better program that works with mac & pc)
    2.   Share applications between the IMAC and MACBOOK PRO.
    3.   Monitor the activities of the 13" Macbook
    4.   Share printers
    5.   Back up all to the Time Capsule
Does this need to be 5 seperate questions?

That is an easy question!!!! you know you can just make her a adminastrator and talk to her about not deleteing bad songs. That is an easier way to do it.

  • Help adding new Macs to the household, creating shared drive for iTunes,

    I have a few questions:
My husband and I recently both got MacBook Pros. Our former set-up was a iMac which backs up to a 500 G Time Capsule. We have a large iTunes library and iPhoto library on the iMac. The iMac is going to turn in to the kids computer. I would like to do the following:
    1. transfer photos to my MBP (#1). Will the Time Machine backup for the iMac become significantly smaller, making room for the soon to be larger backup of the MBP #1? Little confused how that is going to work.
    2. have shared access to iTunes library? basically it would be nice for all 3 computers to have the complete iTunes library, but I would also like to backup all 3 computers using Time Machine and don't want to have triplicates of the library. I was trying to figure out if the way to go is to put the iTunes on a shared drive on the Time Capsule, but is there a way for the 3 computers to 'sync' to the shared drive when new music is added? Finally, if the iTunes is within a shared drive does that mean it won't be backed up?
Much appreciation and thanks to anyone who can help make sense of this.

Update: Downloaded free version of Syncopation, and am hopeful this is going to some what solve my iTunes issue.
New question would be: when creating the Time Machine backups for MBP#1 and MBP #2 can I NOT back up the iTunes folders? That would save approx. 36G on each of these backups, right? 72G total of the Time Capsule space. And the assumption is that with Syncopation, as long as the iMac iTunes is backed up then, you have everything.

  • How many users can connect to a shared drive on a non-server workstation?

How many users can connect to a shared drive on a non-server workstation? We're waiting for our server to arrive and in the interum we're using a Pegasus 2 R6 attached to an iMac running Mavericks as our fileserver. It's been sketchy, the connection to the server being dropped once in a while or the inability to mount the drive after a week of success. The Pegasus we're using now will be attached to a server once it arrives. For now I need to figure what's coausing trouble before I commit to this being our main storage as planned. The data is backed up every night so I'm not worried, its the usability issues. 5-7 people are mounting this drive and opening/saving at the same time. Is there a limit to Maverick's fileserving ability that may be causing this? Understandable if so.

The file server in the client version of OS X has a default limit of 10 simultaneous connections. That limit can be raised by installing OS X Server, or lowered by setting a hidden preference. Assuming you've done neither, you may be able to solve the problem temporarily by stopping and restarting file sharing in the Sharing preference pane, or permanently by setting another hidden preference on the server to break idle connections quickly.
defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleFileServer idleDisconnectOnOff -bool YES
Stop and restart file sharing. To reverse the change, run this command in the same way:
defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleFileServer idleDisconnectOnOff -bool NO

  • Setting up iCloud Drive for a family is a nightmare!

Setting up iCloud Drive for a family is a nightmare!  I have spent the last two hours trying to figure out a smart way to make it work!  First off, even though the name is similar, iCloud Drive seems to be a very different thing than Google Drive or Dropbox.  There is no "sharing" option.  This is what is so frustrating at the moment.
My family has used one main Apple ID for years.  I recently upgraded the iCloud space so my daughter could sync her iPhone to the cloud.  So, I updated to Yosemite and iCloud Drive and REALLY LIKED many aspects of the new system.  However, in order to make many of the new features work, like having the text messages come to the computer, and having the phone calls (which are linked to Facetime) come to the computer I am faced with all kinds of dilemmas.  My wife and I have two Macbooks.  In order for her to get her phone calls forwarded to her Macbook she needs to have her phone number AND e-mail address that's associated with the specific iCloud Account that her computer is logged into.  We have mainly been logging in to the same Apple ID.  In order for her to access her own phone vs. mine she will have to log her computer in to a different Apple ID - but that will also mean a new iCloud Drive.
I think these new features in Yosemite are great - but they are geared towards individual people.  There have been many articles written about how to deal with Apple IDs within a family.  There need to be some updated articles on how to deal with iCloud Drive and a family.  To me it's just way, way too complicated. It seems like it doesn't "just work" anymore.

It will depend on how much data has to be moved to iCloud Drive. 30 minutes is a long time, but not unbelievable.

  • Encrypted Time Machine Backups on a shared drive

    Hello community,
    the following situation:
I have an iMac and a MacBook Air, both running Mountain Lion.
Both use FileVault 2 encryption of the whole MacOS partition.
The iMac is connected to an external USB hard drive, which I use as Time Machine volume. I've set up Time Machine to encrypt the backups on the external volume (it took abou 2 days until the whole drive was encrypted).
So far no problems. No let's get to the tricky part.
I want to the MacBook to use the same USB drive for its Time Machine backups. However I don't want to connect the volume directly via USB. Instead I have shared the USB volume on the iMac. And now I want to use this shared drive as my backup drive in the MacBook. (Hint: I want to use the same partition both for the iMac backups as well as for the MacBook backups.)
I can mount and select the drive on the MacBook. However Time Machine on the MacBook asks me, if I want to envrypt the backups. Which of course I want to do. But the USB drive and therefore the entire mounted volume is already encrypted (from the iMac).
Now I'm scared to opt in for encryption on the MacBook because I'm afraid the MacBook will again encypt the whole volume. Will that be the case? If so, what will happen on the iMac afterwards? Or will Time Machine recognize, that the volume is already encrypted (encryption passwords are the same of course)?
Or is it not necessary to activate backup encryption on the MacBook since the drive is already encryted? Or will the MacBook somehow manage to write unencrypted backups on an encrypted volume?
I would really appreciate any help to get the backups up and running. In short: I want both Macs to backup to the same drive. And I want both to encrypt the backups (with the same password).
    Regards

That's usually not a good idea; for best results, they should be in separate partitions.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #4 for an explanation, and #22 for setup instructions.

Backups made over a network are placed in a sparse bundle disk image, separate from the backups made directly.  The disk image is like a disk-within-a-disk; it has it's own partition map scheme and format.  So it will not be encrypted unless you tell TM to do so.
In short: I want both Macs to backup to the same drive. And I want both to encrypt the backups (with the same password).
Since the backups are separate, they must be encrypted separately.  You may use the same password for both if you want.

  • Saving PDF directly in the shared drive

when I create PDF using Adobe Live Cycle, always it sends PDF as an email to the creator and then user has to save it the shared drive. Is there a way to directly save the file instead of sending as email through SMTP?
    Thanks

Set the Sparse Disk image to ignore ownership nd permissions, or better yet, put the Library on an external disk, set to ignore ownship and permissions.
You can do this in the Get Info window.

  • Can't see Shared Drives

I upgraded my July 07 MacBook Pro to Leopard and now I can't see the shared drives connected to my G4 iMac that I just used to back up my files prior to upgrading. Any ideas? Thanks.

My shared drives disappeared too - turned out it was something I did under the "security" tab of system preferences. I set it to block incomming communication, next thing I knew my shared drives disappeared. When I set it back to "allow..." they appeared again.

    Hi rak299,
According your description ,it seems that the machine will get into sleep mode though the
sleep or hibernate is set to disable.
Considering this happened after a upgrade ,I recommend you to upgrade your motherboard driver and chipset driver in the same time. The missing update
will influence the function of the sleep mode.
Just for confirmation, we can run  “powercfg -a ” in an administrator command line to check the available sleep settings. Meanwhile ,we can run “powercfg –energy ” to get an analysis of the whole power setting  reports.

  • Copying files from Mac to PC network shared drives.

Copying files from Mac to PC network shared drives.
We have shared mounted drives in AIX Fusion that we can pull files from and copy to the mac, however we can not copy files from the mac to the drives.
“Error in user parameter list (-50)” With MS DOS-Formatted Volume.”
The drives are mapped on the mac using SMB. We can go to the files on the mac and use “save as” and this works and saves them on the shared drives.
We can not drag and copy them to the shared drives. Every time it fails and we get the above error. We can create folders but not move any files.
When we look up the error, it is referring to certain characters that can but used in a Max OS X filename and are not allowed in MS-DOS filenames. We are not using any of the characters not allowed.
The drives have all the basic set up in AIX, RWC. All the PC's we have can drag files to and from all our shared drives.

Either install software which enables the Mac to write to NTFS drives, or MacDrive on the PC, or reformat any drives you'll be using to share files between the computers as either FAT32 or exFAT.

  • Itunes Library - shared drive

Here is my question. I have itunes on my mac mini - I just got a Buffalo Linkstation to set up as a shared drive on my network - I want to put movies on the shared drive to be able to then view on my Apple TV. I don't want my music on my shared drive, I want to keep it on my mini. Can I do this? If so how?
    Thanks

try if you can use this script:
    [_*Re-Locate Selected v1.1*_|http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=relocateselected]
This script will re-locate the files of the selected iTunes tracks from their current location to a new user-chosen folder. iTunes will be updated with each track's new location and all of each track's meta-data will be preserved. Option to remove the files from their original location. (I don't advise using this on more than an album's worth of tracks or so at a time; re-locating dozens of tracks' files to a single folder doesn't seem to make much sense to me.)
NOTE: If your "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" preference set, you will not be able to create new folders in or re-locate files within the iTunes Media folder; outside is OK.
you can also move the movie files manually:
    (a) temporarily change +*iTunes media folder location+* (preferences > advanced) to point to the NAS. on the same tab, ensure +*copy files to ... when adding to library+* is check marked
    (b) highlight the movie files in iTunes, right-click (or ctrl-click) and select +consolidate files+ from the pop-up menu.
    (c) point +*iTunes media folder location+* back to the original spot and delete (or keep) the original movie files from your local iTunes media folder.

  • Unable to connect shared drive on Sun host via PCNFS v5.1

I am trying to setup a shared directory on a Sun host running SunOS Release 5.6. I have an old version of PCNFS v5.1 for DOS that I require for a legacy application which seems to be setup correctly. However when I try to mount a shared drive on the Sun server I using "mt.exe" I get the message "Unable to connect the resource '/dirname' from the Server 'name'. Reason: Unrecognized RPC error number 1005." When I try to use the "net use..." command it also fails with the message "PCNFS 251F: The NET USE failed with an internal error code of 1005." I have mountd and rpc.pcnfsd running on the Sun host and would appreciate any help that can be provided. Thanks!

I have looked under Wireless/Advanced Wireless Setting, and in fact, all around in the setup, but don't have any parameter called AP Isolation. Router model is BEFW11S4.
    Any other ideas?

You can put your music anywhere, but it must be part of an iTunes library and iTunes needs to be running for the Apple TV to play it.

  • Permissions Trouble on a Shared Drive

    Hello out there,
I have setup a Lacie Ethernet Big Disk on an ethernet network connected through a Netgear GS748T switch. I am asking people to use it as a shared backup-drive among other things. I wanted to do a complete backup of all the files on there friday to take off-site and it had a lot of trouble with permissions which were basicallly looking like this:
    Name Privilege
    (unknown) Read&Write
    everyone No Access
When I log in as admin and try to change these permissions and then propogate them to the items inside, it appears to be happening but the new permissions don't stick.
This is just a temporary situation until we get our backup systems automated and done properly but in the meantime is there a way to set up permissions to be read and write for everyone on that disk?
Thanks for your help out there,
    Andrew
ps The shared drive has a static ip address, name and password and the computers that save to it run the gamut of OS 10.4 to 10.6 and even some windows PCs

Is anybody out there? Can anybody hear me?
Have I posted in the wrong topic?
    Do I smell?
Just trying to refresh my topic to see if there are any bites. Any info would be appreciated.
If you need to know more to answer, let me know.
