Setting up speakers on my new Mac Pro.

Hi,
Are setting up a Mac Pro and are not sure what to do about the speakers.
Should I use the optical or mini plughole? As I have not purchased any speakers as yet I are also not sure if you only use two speakers and have stereo sound or if you get a 5.1 surround sound speaker set. Then how do you plug that in if you have more than two speakers? Sometimes I like to add additional sound tracks other than just what the camera has recorded.
Can you recommend a speaker set, I would like a good set but do not want to pay the earth if you know what I mean.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

The best way to do that is the same way recommended for monitoring your video; externally. Connect a decent pair of near field audio monitors to the same analog output as your external TV monitor uses.

JBL Creature speakers for the new Mac Pro

Hmmmm - unless I'm doing something strange/wrong I find that my JBL Creature speakers that worked perfectly well on my recently sold Power Mac PPC Dual 2.5 GHz G5 are not compatible with the new Nehalem 8-core Mac Pro.
I have the 8-core 2.26 GHz Nehalem with stock 6GB memory + the new 24" LED ACD connected via the mini display port. The JBL's pin does plug into the backside of the Mac Pro's audio out jack but there's absolutely no sound from the JBL speakers. The ONLY sound is from the speakers in the base of the 24" LED ACD.
Weird.... Am I doing something wrong ? Thanks....

Yes, you're doing something wrong: you need to go to system preferences -> audio (or sound, I'm not sure, as I'm not using English as my system language), then select the right audio output (something like "line out"). This way it won't use the 24" LED ACD speakers but your JBLs.

Set up RAID 0 on new Mac Pro

I should have the machine by Friday, Nov 2. Two 500g drives. Apparently, Apple won't be configuring the RAID 0 (mirroring) for me. Are there instructions online that I can read now so I know what I'm getting into before hand?
Also, in the event of a drive failure, should the system just keep on chugging along, just giving me a message that one drive has failed? On my Windows system, that's what is supposed to happen. But having had two failures over the years, I only got the friendly helpful message once. The other time, the entire system shut down, even though only one drive failed. What should I expect with the Mac Pro?

Thanks to both. And thanks for pointing out my error. It's mirroring that's important to me, not the added speed from striping. I'm hoping that a drive failure won't cause the machine to stop "dead in its tracks", as I've had happen before, even on a high end Windows machine with RAID 1 enabled via an Adaptec RAID card.
What still isn't clear to me is whether with Apple's RAID 1 the system will continue functioning if one drive fails, or if instead I'll have some work to do to get back up and running.
The reason for my question is that too many times in the past I've bought into something that turns out not to be quite what I expected. And since Apple sells a separate RAID card for the Mac Pro, I'm wondering if the built in RAID function, without the add-on $1,000 card, will allow the system to keep working when one drive fails in a mirrored setup.

What is the best way to set up my new Mac Pro?

Not wanting to screw up in a process I've not done with a brand new machine before, I'm looking for feedback on my plan for setting my new Mac Pro next week...
The physical plan is this:
For RAM, I have four 2GB SDRAM's plus the supplied six 1GB modules. My plan here is to install the 2GB rams into the first four slots and install four of the 1GB modules into the remaining four slots for a total of 12GB's.
When the cost for 4GB modules gets down to reasonable, I'll buy four of them and bump the current rams down the line which will then give me a total of 24 gigs where I'll stay.
For my hard drives, I'm installing a 160GB Intel X25-M into the first drive bay

using one of MaxUpgrades' 'MaxConnects' kits. I will use this drive for the operating system software and my applications and their libraries.
Next, into the remaining three drive bays, I am installing three 300GB WD Velociraptors. Mine are the pre-'backplane ready' versions:

which, thanks to this forum, I now understand, with the correct firmware installed, function well so I will install it and be able to establish hardware RAID. I will create a RAID 0 set with the three Velociraptors and use it to store all of my data files.
Backup will happen on a 1TB WD 'Caviar Black' external drive connected through one of the Sonnet card's external eSATA ports and using the OS 'Time Machine' software.
And that's the physical plan. My question is about setting things up. The physical installation part is straight forward and I don't expect any difficulties but I'm wondering what is the best way to install the operating system.
Do I take a first step keeping the supplied hard drive installed, install the solid state drive into the next drive bay and then transfer the contents from the supplied drive onto the SSD or do I do the complete physical installation process and do a 'C' drive start up and install the OS that way?
And, do you have any tips/suggestions on setting up the RAID 0 set?

oh mighty Hatter, I knew you'd have helpful guidance to offer! And thank you. You've confirmed my anxieties about the Sonnet card; kind of a 'too much, too quickly' sort of thing. And it's not that Sonnet's not a good company. Just everything to do with new technologies and the growth curve we all, manufacturers and users, go through when they come out. And, for sure, the new Mac Pro's are new technology; the single biggest forward leap in Apple's top-of-the-line machines for some time far as I can tell. Just reading at Intel's website about the Nehalem's is a joy!
So, I will proceed now with everything except for the controller card, leaving that 'til later. In the meantime, I think I'll just happily run with the four hard drives all running independently. No software RAID. I know just those, the SSD boot drive plus Velociraptor trio's going inside of a 2.66ghz 8-core Nehalem Mac Pro is going to be a working pleasure. Heck, this way, I'll get settled in and used to the machine's speed, have a great time doing so and then, in however many months, I can jump into spending another chunk of money on an excellent RAID card, RAID card's dear Barefeats will have tested and reviewed for us, set up my RAID 0 set and head of to those new races watching my computer leap for joy! Could be that, by then, the cost of Intel 160GB X25-M's will have dropped enough that I can afford to go for a second and have a two SSD RAID 0 boot drive... Yummy!

Interesting to read about the problems people have had with Sonnet's 2.17 update in PPC's... In this computer, my PowerMac G5 dual 2.7ghz, I have a Sonnet 'Tempo Sata X4P' controller card. I downloaded and installed 2.17 and got the same troubles; no cut, no paste, no 'drag and drop' etc. It was miserable.
Mine, fortunately, magically corrected after running the 'permissions verify and correct' process in Disc Utility and, after a restart, all was back to almost normal but for one exception; the Sonnet card was no longer present or functioning including the four eSATA ports out the back. (I ran Tech Tools Pro 5's repair suites first but, and who knows why, it didn't correct the problem...) This one was absolutely in the 'who knows what the f_'s going on and why it disappeared but did' class.
Oh, the other remnant is that, when the computer goes into sleep, after about five minutes, the fans rev up, and up, and the computer's frozen; only access is to do a forced shutdown pressing and holding the power button, so I've had to adopt a 'shut down whenever leaving it for more than fifteen minutes' approach to this dear friend. Once I've fully moved into and established my new one (which should arrive today, by the way... Yippeee!!! Can't wait!), I'll do a complete restoration on this one including taking out the Sonnet card. Usually, I sell my old Pro's but, this time, I'm going to keep this one as a back up and just general second computer for times I might need it. It has been such a great and dependable machine. Keeping it seems the right thing to do.

You certainly could keep the old Mac Pro in Firewire mode (hold down the T key on its keyboard as you boot) to show its drives on the new MP. This is basically as fast as putting the drives into a Firewire enclosure.
Or you could boot it normally and share its files over the network using the Sharing panel of System Preferences. If you turn on both File and Screen Sharing, you don't even need to have a monitor attached - you can do all administration using screen sharing. However, this method requires that you open all files over the network, which will be slower than the direct-connect method above, and may also not work with all applications.

If it has Lion, use the Recovery Mode boot Command-R
Use that to erase and reinstall - it has network install ability.

Best way to set up a new MAC PRO

I am a free lancer who has just taken the (huge) step to setting up a small graphics/final cut studio in my apartment (NYC). The core of my operation is a brand new MAC PRO. 3 questions:
1. What is the best physical environment for the new system in terms of temperature, dust, and access to the back of the tower? I am planning on using Metro Shelving to put the tower on.
2. I ordered a 1 terabyte hd. What is the best way to partition a hd this large?
3. So far I have only had experience setting up laptops purchased off the shelf. The tower was "made to order", what are decisions that need to be made when you are setting up the system for the first time?
Any other words of wisdom on the care and feeding of the new tower would be greatly appreciated!

You can skip on the Apple Pro RAID card. Pick up a 3rd party card later.
I would pick up three of the above F1s for $150 ea. and can be used in RAID using Apple software, works fine.
I would have saved $$ and skipped the 1TB drive. Great for Time Machine and backups.
Why use external drives for media if you can have native SATA, use those for backup too.
When you have more drives you can clone your system and files as needed. One thing I would do now is make a clone of your system to one of your FireWire drives that you can boot from and use to restore to another drive later.
You may as well partition the new drive so you can isolate the system and apps if you want, and before the files fragment the drive more than it is so you can resize and create partitions if it helps.
I have only used mirrors a couple times, I find I'd rather put two or more drives to separate uses, and it isn't a replacement for backups.
There are some RAID5/6 3rd party external controllers that can drive up to 4 x 5-drive cases (Port Multiplier).

Setting up RAID 1 on a new Mac Pro

I just received my new Mac Pro today, yay!
I purchased two 500GB HDs that I want to set up in a mirrored RAID (RAID 1). I plugged in my 300 GB SATA drive from my old Macintosh but the new system does not recognize it as a startup volume.
I was going to boot into my old volume, format the two 500 GB HDs, setup the RAID, then clone my 300GB drive to the new RAID. Since I can't boot to the old drive, I'm not sure how to proceed.
I've backed up my new system to the 300 GB drive and I'm planning to completely reinstall OS X, just in case there are some iLife goodies not on my install disks.
Is there another easier way to setup the RAID without formatting the HD. Can I clone the HD to my other 500 GB HD and then just activate the RAID?

Never set up a RAID on this board. As far as I'm aware data is lost, so back-up first. Hopefully you did that before you got the new motherboard?
I'm thinking if one is so careful with one's data to use RAID1.... If not I think the best and safest way to go is to get a new, third hard disk. That way you take the one with the precious data out of the equation temporarily.

- Prepare a floppy with the XP RAID drivers. Floppy is required if you want to boot of a RAID with XP.
- Enable SATA RAID and enter RAID BIOS to set up the RAID configuration of your liking, and with what hard disks.
- Set BIOS to boot off the installation disk.
Now jumping to the Windows installation:
- You will be asked to push F6 to supply special hard disk controller drivers.
- Let the installation manager find all required XP drivers. - And from there it is pretty obvious.
Mod: When installation is complete and system is stable etc, power off and connect the old data disk to the system and start copying. Be aware that system may want to boot from the old disk.

New Mac Pro and Old G4 Speakers

Well, I go out and buy a new mac pro(not the laptop but the desktop). I try to hook up my old G4 screen and it doesn't work. I bought a new screen becasue the guys at the store told me there was no way to adapt the screen for the new computer. Well, I go to hook up my old (old being 2 years) clear plastic round speakers and they don't fit in the hole. It is so frustrating that it seems I have to buy ALL new stuff. Does anyone know of an adapter I could use so I can hook up these speakers so I don't have to go out and spend another $100 on something I already have?

I can't really answer without any more information, but I guess it could be possible the OS wasn't properly installed. If you're near an Apple store, I would take it in to them and let them troubleshoot it. If not, I would pop the DVD drive open with a paperclip: There should be a small hole in the front of the actual drive. Not sure if you can get to it by moving the door down (the little door that opens for the DVD drive) to access it or if you'll have to remove the side of the computer and get to the hole that way. OR: You should be able to open the DVD drive while it's attempting to startup by holding down the mouse button. When you get the DVD drive open, slip in the Tiger or Leopard disk and hold down the "C" key to startup from the DVD. Then you might be able to re-install the OS.
If you want to, you can open the side of the computer (while it's off!) to make sure all the RAM, drive(s), and the videocard are seated properly. When my ATI x1900XT videocard went bad, it would cause the computer to reboot.
Just a couple things to try, anyway... Maybe someone else will have better ideas.

okay, try option-clicking on the speaker icon on the top of your screen. That should bring up a list of sound output options. including headphone. You could try messing around with Audio MIDI. It may be possible that the thing is still stuck inside the headphone jack. Careful use of a toothpick may get it unstuck. I dunno, I've never had a problem with the headphone jack. If all else fails, call Apple or take 'er in for an appointment

First time user trying to set up new Mac pro, wireless mouse and wireless keyboard together?

So I just bought a new Mac Pro, wireless keyboard and mouse. i am a first time Mac user. How do I even get started......connect the wireless mouse and key board to the Mac Pro desktop to even get started??

Just turn on the mouse and keyboard and observe that the green light comes on and starts to blink then turn on the Mac. The Mac should give you on-screen instructions.

My brand new mac pro always had Internet connection issues at school. WHY is that? I see the school's Internet working perfectly fine on other PC's, but there is never a day where my mac doesn't have Internet connection issues at school. How do I fix it?

I got my mac pro in the middle of August. School started the week after. Internet was working perfectly fine at home. But at school, I never had a good connection. Sometimes on the good days I get a connection when I'm sitting at the exact spot in class I always sit at. It's ridiculous and it's frustrating. I invested my money into this laptop and I'm beginning to regret it. I thought it was the school's Internet, but I don't see Internet issues with other PC users. It's most frustrating on registration days and I'm trying to register for my classes before it gets taken, but again... Internet connection issues. It's random. Majority of the time, it doesn't work at all. I've done Network Diagnosis and turning WiFi off then turning it on again. I've done everything I could. I put my money on this laptop and it was a lot of money. I could have bought an 800 dollars laptop and I would have Internet connection anywhere on campus. So, I don't want to continue everyday to regret on buying this laptop every time I try to connect to the Internet at school or Starbucks or anywhere else. How do I fix this? What's the problem ?
At school, I heard this guy had a problem with Internet connections too and he owned a new mac book pro. He said something like Apple messed up on something, but he fixed it. If I knew mac book pro's had these issues I wouldn't have bought it in the first place. It's freezing on me every other day. It's ridiculous. But what concerns me the most is the Internet connection. So someone please tell me what can I do next to prevent the problem? Am I doing something wrong maybe?

I'm using an XLR input mic which is connected to the phantom power enabled XLR mic socket on a USB M-Audio M-Track. The M-Track is connected by USB to the Mac Pro - so effectively I've got an M-Audio USB soundcard with a mic input. I've also tried a microphone that is a straight XLR to USB cable (guessing with some soundcard chip buried in the usb plug) but that also yields the same effect of bad latency, intermittent quality, stuttering and repeating and echoing (without the speakers on during record so its not feedback).
The mic works absolutely fine with other recording applications I have on the mac at the moment - albeit non-adobe ones (tested it on the EasyAudioRecorder - and it lives up to its name. it's easy)
I will try with Audition and report back, but sitting here right now I can imagine it would work fine with audition too - it just seems to be the way premiere is set up for recording into the timeline is a bit sketchy. I'm willing to accept it might well be a quirk with the new Mac Pro trashcan - I'm not weighting all the woes on premiere.
Any thoughts or am I out of luck to sit with my fingers crossed for a fix in the next round of updates?

New Mac Pro performance versus a Dual 1.8 ghz G5

I just wanted to give some feedback of my new Mac Pro experience and hopefully get some feedback about it.
I recently updated to from a 1.8 dual core G5 to a 3.0 dual quad core Intel machine. In "core" processing (burning from disk and encoding) is sustainably faster (from 30 mins to 10 mins when encoding). The biggest disappointment is just the day to day operation. It isn't faster. I wanted to see Photoshop, iTunes and other programs to just jump up when I launch them (they just take as long to load maybe a little faster) and other just basic mac processes to work really quickly but the speed of the interface is the same as it is on my powermac. It still is paging my hard drive and isn't loading all my data when I do searches (I probably need to leave it running over night to get the hard drive completely paged). I have had this weird fan issue that makes the fans ALOT louder than my powermac (have read many posts here about that issue). Also have been having weird midi issues where my fire wire speakers don't work when I put the computer to sleep and wake it and I have plug my headphones in multiple times before they will be recognized by the computer.
My intial feeling is that the operating system hasn't been fully built up around the mac pro as it is for the powermac. I feel that the powermac was more "integrated" with the Os.
I also have heard that the new version of the OS is supposed to make better use the core processers. Therefore making tasks like hard drive searches and program launching faster. My fear is that part of using the core processors is on software like Adobe to write code to use them.
I have been on the phone with Apple about the speaker issue. I think I'm just going to bring my speakers into a Apple Store and repeat my issue. I also want to see if my headphone port is messed up (because it takes the headphones but seems "loose").

Migration Assistant, we began to see a year ago, was causing most systems to run like molasses and sluggish. So that is #1. There is no way to really see the potential at all with 1GB of RAM and 2GB gets it at least off the starvation diet.
8GB (4 x 2? 8 x 1?) if you use large files (750MB and above) AND you then use the "enable VM Buffer plug-in" from Adobe.
If you were use to using a 750GB drive, that would also help explain why. if you hate launching... don't - just leave them up.... or boot off a RAID.
but be sure to set PS scratch to another drive than boot drive if possible.
When you stop seeing swap files and pageouts, then you know that you are a step further. Tiger or Leopard can still use available memory for cache or for virtual scratch space to some extent that also can improve performance... once running.
You'll want to reformat the 750GB drive to native GUID/GPL partition map from the PPC/APL it has.
I don't even keep /users on boot drive (its there, just in case a program thinks it needs to be there) but ~/ home is on 2nd drive or RAID, just to insure that the boot drive can do its thing and not get slowed down by also having to serve for other tasks and programs.
The new Seagate 7200.11 750/1000GB drive has better multi-user functionality, though the Hitachi seems to be faster overall, except... not all Hitachi models work well on Mac Pro (or didn't as I don't keep up). Which is why I have been using strictly WD Raptor and Caviar (RE/RE2 and SE16) for the last year, they seem to be okay (and some el cheapo MaxLine Pro based on price).
Today, 2 x 1GB costs a mere $139, while a year ago it would have set someone back $700-800.
