Setting up storage for iPhoto and iMovie on rMBP

Hi,
I just purchased a rMPB 15" with a 256 SSD drive and 8gig RAM.  While I have several iOS devices (phone, ipad, ATV) this is my first MAC OS device.
I purcahsed it mainly to organize my photos and video.
I probably have thousdands of photos, and hundreds of hours of video (on MiniDV) that I want to import, edit, organzie, etc.  I know that the intenal harddrive will not be enough to support all this.  I want to set this up right the first time, so I dont have any issues.
My first thought was NAS, but after doing some research it appears that might not be the best course of action since it looks like iPhoto and iMovie dont suppport NAS.
Then I thoguht external USB hard drive, but what happens when I dont have the hard drive connected?  I dont want to have to keep a hard drived tethered to my laptop at all times.
Ok, then I thought just use harddrive to backup via time machine.  But what happens when internal drive gets full?
Do i load all my photos directly onto a harddrive and then have iPhoto just point to it, thus not ever having them on internal drives?
Its these type of questions I have.
My ultimate hope is some sort of NAS setup, so my non Apple devices (windows, DLNA, etc) coudl access the ptotos and videos as well.
Thanks for the advise
Ron

1.  Can iPhoto support multiple libraries on its own (or do I need that additional software referenced above)
It can do multiple libraries on its own. However, that just allows you to create and open Libraries, you can't move images between them and so on. If you are using multiple Libraries check out iPhoto Library Manager
If I take all my photos, and organize them with iPhoto (using an external drive for example), they way I understand how iPhoto works is it takes all the photo in, and then organizes them into its own system.
You need to make a small distinction here: iPhoto stores the files, you organise the Pictures as you want.
It's a key distinction. The file is just a container -  a box - for your Photograph. Think of it this way:  In my iTunes Library I have a file called 'Let_it_Be_The_Beatles.mp3'. So what is that, exactly? It's not the song. The Beatles never wrote an mp3. They wrote a tune and lyrics. They recorded it and a copy of that recording is stored in the mp3 file. So the file is just a container for the recording. That container is designed in a specific way attuned to the characteristics and requirements of the data. Hence, mp3.
Similarly, that Jpeg is not your photo, it's a container designed to hold that kind of data. iPhoto is all about the data and not about the container. So, regardless of where you choose to store the file, iPhoto will manage the photo, edit the photo, add metadata to the Photo but never touch the file. If you choose to export - unless you specifically choose to export the original - iPhoto will export the Photo into a new container - a new file containing the photo.
Once I take the time to tag them, identify, group ect.  All that meta data is only relevant in Iphoto correct?
No, it's relevant to the Photograph and (almost) all of it can be used for searching and can be exported with it.
So, if you use a media browser you can search on any text: Title, Caption, keywords etc. (There is a single exception: there is no way to share Faces information as there is no agreed convention for this kind of metadata.) Any thing else you add in iPhoto can be written to the file on export.
For help accessing your photos in iPhoto see this user tip:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4491
Depends on the export setting you choose, but potentially, everything except Faces.
This User Tip
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
has details of the options in the Export dialogue.
Are they still organized by date?
Organised where?
When exporting photo's out of iPhoto, do they retain any file structure.
Do you mean filing structure? Depends on what you choose in the export dialogue.

  • Different apple id shows for updates on mac for iPhoto and iMovie

Hi, on my Mac there are two updates available for iPhoto and iMovie however the update requires me to use my old apple ID which I no longer use. I have checked iTunes, iCloud and the App store and my current apple ID is used for all of them. I don't understand why my old apple ID keeps showing up, I can't sign out of it because it doesn't give me that option.
I'm really confused, please help me out!!!

Those applications have the old Apple ID stored inside them. It can't be changed without deleting them and then redownloading them from the desired Apple ID; in the case of preloaded applications, you may also need to contact Apple. This can be done by going to the Mac App Store main page and clicking on Support under Quick Links.

  • Available updates for iphoto and imovie on apple store.

My apple informs me that I have available updates for iphoto and imovie, however when I try to update them I receive a message that i can't do this because I do not have the major version. How to proceed?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Open Finder and go to the folder where these applications are. Then, move them to Applications folder. Finally, open the App Store and update them to the most recent version. If it doesn't work, see if they are hidden, and if they are hidden, unhide them > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4928

  • I've already paid for iPhoto but i got a new hard drive put in my computer so do i have to pay for iPhoto and iMovie again?

I've already paid for iPhoto but i got a new hard drive put in my computer so do i have to pay for iPhoto and iMovie again?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Of course not. You already purchased iPhoto and iMovie, so you can reinstall them for free.
If you purchased them from the Mac App Store or you got your Mac after July 2011, open the Mac App Store, log in with your Apple ID, go to Purchases and redownload them. Note that the latest iPhoto and iMovie need OS X Mavericks.
If you purchased them in a DVD, insert the DVD and install them. Then, open  > Software Update, and install the latest version.
If you got your Mac before July 2011, use the Applications Install Disc to install iPhoto and iMovie.

  • HT4710 Updates for iPhoto and iMovie in the Mac App Store

    Hi,
I recently bought a new computer running Lion. When I started using the computer, I opened the Mac App Store and signed in with my Apple ID (the same one I've always used for buying apps from there, music from the iTunes store, and apps for my iPhone). I am able to easily access and download my old purchased apps to my new computer without a problem. However, in the updates section it shows updates available for both iPhoto and iMovie, but when I go to update them I get this message, "To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it." iPhoto and iMovie came on the new computer, and the only Apple ID account that I have ever used is the one that I am currently signed in under. Does anyone have any idea how I can get these updates, or at the very minimum, get rid of them so that they do not show up anymore (frankly, I find the red circle very annoying, and I don't really use either of these apps so I'm not too concerned about them).
    Thanks!
Sorry, I found a few other questions about this same thing after posting, so I'll try those solutions.

Open iTunes on the new Mac, sign into your account and view your account information. There is a section for Purchase History where you can view the invoices for everything that you have ever bought from the iTunes stores and the Mac App Store.

  • How to change the Apple ID for iPhotos and iMovies(The first ID used in the mac book)?

I found that every time when I want to update the iphotos and imovies and the native apps in the mac book it is needed to use the first apple id that used for the first time you turn on the mac book.
Since that id is not used now and i want to change it, any body knows how to change it?
And although my current admin id has changed, but still when updating iphotos the very first id is needed...

Correct.  Apps are Tied to the Apple ID that Purchased them...
    From Here   http://support.apple.com/kb/HE37
I have multiple Apple IDs. Is there a way for me to merge them into a single Apple ID?
Apple IDs cannot be merged. You should use your preferred Apple ID from now on, but you can still access your purchased items such as music, movies, or software using your other Apple IDs.

  • Software update in mountain lion offers updates for iPhoto and iMovie that will not install

Updated my iMac 2011 to Mountain Lion. Software Update now operates through the App Store. Third Party apps are OK but Apple's native Mac apps eg iPhoto, iMovie offer updates for installation that do not install.
Get this error eg for iMovie but similar for iPhoto and maybe others:
"We could not complete your update.  iMovie is already installed on this computer. Choose Software Update from the Apple menu to check for available updates."
If you do as suggested, it reloads App Store software update and goes round again...
If I go to "Check for updates" in the iMovie menu it tells me it's the current version.
"This version of iMovie (9.0.8) is the current version."
The badge showing the count of apps requrining an update is also wrong.

Hi, just wondering, were any of Apple's Apps moved from there default location?

  • In OSX 10.8, can I use the same apple id to get updates for iPhoto and iMovie?

Hi, so there are several sites that I work at that have multiple OSX 10.8 devices. I was wondering if there was a way that I can use the same apple ID to update iPhoto or iMovie? Apparently its needed for updates now. Alternatively, is there a way that I can do basic updates with out putting in an apple ID? A few dozen is no problem, but there are more than that which need to be updated. And frankly, its becoming a pain.

You may only do that on machines you own. Other users must have their own Apple IDs and purchase the software for themselves. If these are enterprises, then contact Apple. They have special programs for enterprise purchasing.

  • Software update not working for iPhoto and iMovie

My updates for both iPhoto and iMoive say they can update becasue the app is already loaded and say to check to check app store updates. My iLife came with my my new Mac Mini. Confusing as best.

    Hello there Brad,
I was thinking it might be a good idea to delete and re install the iMovie and iPhoto applications from the Mac App store.
First find the apps in your Applications folder in finder, and move them to the trash and restart your computer.
Then use this article to re download them from the Mac App Store.
Mac App Store: Finding your purchased apps
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4483
Apps purchased via the Mac App Store
When purchased via the Mac App Store, apps are installed in the Applications folder. Icons for purchased apps are automatically placed in the current user's Dock. There is also a purchases tab in the Mac App Store where you can see all of your Mac App Store downloads.
    Cheers,
    Sterling

  • Can't update iPhoto and iMovie.

I recently purchased a Macbook Pro Retina, and once everything was set up, the Mac App store tells me I have updates for iPhoto and iMovie. However, when I tried updating them, I get the follwong message: You have updates available for other accounts. To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it.
I only have one iTunes account for the past several years, and I just bought this laptop. Anyone have any solutions?

    Might be pirated apps...

  • How to reinstall Garageband, iPhoto and iMovie

Three weeks ago, while I was surfing the net, the Macbook I was using suddenly displayed a message asking me to turn off and restart.  I turned it off but it could not get restarted beyond the "sign on" screen.  I tried to reinstall the OSx by using the CD that came along with the Macbook, but it could not work either. So I brought the Macbook to an authorised Apple Store, the technician on duty tried to do the installation as well but to no avail.  I was told to leave the set there and to collect it 4 days later.  True enough, I got my set back after the third day, I was told that since I upgraded the OSx from Snow Leopard to Lion, I could no longer use the CDs for reinstallation.  The store also warned me that for this round, the reinstallation was free but for similar future installation, I would have to pay for service charge (by the way, my set is still under warranty).
The store also told me that I could reinstall Lion on-line but then I found these applications iPhoto, iMovie and GrarageBand missing after the reinstallation.  Again the technician on duty reinstalled Lion several times but could not get these applications back.  With no other help available, I took the set home and tried reinstallation several more times and tried downloading these applications without success.  Finally, I went on-line to Apple Store to do a download, for iPhoto and iMovie I was billed but for GarageBand it was also downloaded but could not work, each time I click the icon, an error message "the instrument library is invalid" appear. Can anyone please help.

    That is completely incorrect.

All you need to do to get these applications back is to insert disc 2 that originally came with your mac.  I know this for sure because I just did a fresh install of Lion and the applications were missing as well, so I inserted disc 2 that came with my mac and reinstalled them (my mac originally came with Snow Leopard). It has those applications on it as well as the Apple Hardware Test.  The people who you talked to have no idea what they are talking about.

  • After upgrading to Mavericks I cannot update iPhoto and iMovie. Why?

Just got my first Mac, an iMac. I upgraded to Maverick and once done I find there are updates available for iPhoto and iMovie. First I have tried to register "accept" the two apps. Nothing happens. Then I try to update them and get the answer that these apps was installed with another Apple ID. The thing is that I don't have any other Apple ID and noone else has touched my iMac. I have tried to reinstall Maverick three times now but end up with the same result. Anyone who has any clue or have experienced the same problem?

Open System Preferences > Users & Groups then select the Password tab.
Make sure you see the correct Apple ID.
    If not, click Change.
Make sure you are logged into your admin account before updating apps.
Reinstalling Mavericks requires using OS X Recovery  but there's no reason to reinstall Mavericks just to update your apps.

  • IPhoto and iMovie can't update

OK, so, in 2011 I think, my grandparents bought two MacBook Pro 13" laptops... Last year, they gave one of them to me, as my grandpa couldn't use his any more. Recently I realized that I hadn't been updating my software (hadn't used a Mac in forever before that) and ran updates through the app store. Everything went through ok except for iPhoto and iMovie. They ask me for my grandma's Apple ID password, which of course I don't know. I finally asked her today, and she said that not only does she not know the password for the Apple ID associated with the apps, but that the ID doesn't even exist any more! Is there any way to release those apps from her ID and assign them to mine so I can update them?

The issue is that neither of the Macs being sold in 2011 came with the Mac App Store versions of the iLife apps. But it is important to know which Mac it is and which iLife apps that you have installed.
To know the Mac model, go to the Apple menu, choose About This Mac and then choose More Info... What model and year is listed?
What is the version of iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand that is installed?

  • Please help-iphoto and imovie

    Hi-
I would greatly appreciate any help. I just bought my imac for iphoto and imovie. It is a bit more difficult that expected.
I made two slideshows in iphoto. I saved them as .mov files by exporting them from iphoto. When I open imovie it will not allow me to import the movies?? I am so confused. Any help would be amazing.
    Thanks,

I made two slideshows in iphoto. I saved them as .mov files by exporting them from iphoto. When I open imovie it will not allow me to import the movies??
A slideshow created in iPhoto employs a "Tween" track to render transitions. Unfortunately, this track is not discarded when the slideshow is is finished and save. iMovie '08 appears to no know what to do with this track and so it ignores the video when you attempt to import it. If you have QT Pro, simply delete the extraneous track. If you don't have QT Pro, use MPEG Streamclip (free) to save the audio and video content to an MP4 file container. This process appears the strip the extraneous track during the "Save As..." File menu process.
