Setting up time capsule for storage and printer, but not internet

Hi all. I am a new mac user and got time capsule yesterday. I am only using it as storage and USB printer; not for an internet/network use. During setup, I didn't see any option to configure it this way. I did a backup successfully, but the amber light blinks continuously....I am assuming because there's no ethernet/modem? But if I don't intend to use it for that, is it normal for it to always blink amber? Should I find a way to tell it that it's not to be used for that? Or do I just ignore it and live with the blinking light? Thanks.

Paul's suggestion did work - thank you!
However, my anal retentive personality still wonders why there's not a more intuitve phase in the setup process that allows the user to clearly define what they're using it for....i.e. rather than manually override an "error".
Of course, i do have new questions, too -
If the capsule is connected to a computer both wirelessly and with ethernet, which is the preferred/default connection used?
The setup tells me to update firmware, but i haven't yet and it seems to be running fine....any recommendations?

  • How to use time capsule for wireless back-up but not internet?

    Hello,
I have a tower and recently a laptop at work. The tower is connected to our local network with an ethernet cable and the laptop with wireless. So, the internet connection is fine for both.
I was hoping to use my time capsule to do time machine backups on my laptop. Do you have any advice on how to configure this? I do not want to use the time capsule to extend my Internet, as I believe my work I.T. would prefer to handle all access to their  network.
Perhaps there is some documentation about doing this that you could point me to? I have not been able to find it.
    Thank you for your help.

Your original question was How to use Time Capsule for wireless back-up but not Internet?
There is no reason for you to connect the tower....or anything else...using Ethernet if your goal remains that same as you stated.
If you are asking if you can backup the Tower using Ethernet, and not wireless, then you can connect the tower to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule....not the WAN port.
Yes, it appears to work without plugging into my tower.
    Correct, it will work.
I just have to select the network that it created. Of course, I have no access to the Internet while this is happening and it can not auto backup, unless I am on that wireless signal.
As I stated, that is the downside to trying to back up without an Internet connection.  You have to establish another network...and backup over that network.
If you are asking if you can stay connected to the work network while also backing up to your non-Internet "private" network, that is not possible.

  • Can I use two Time Capsules? one as an extension of my laptop (for music and video storage) and the other one to back up everything from the laptop and  Time Capsule (for music and videos)

Can I use two Time Capsules? one as an extension of my laptop (for music and video storage) and the other one to back up everything from the laptop and  Time Capsule (for music and videos)

Not via Time Machine.   It cannot back up from a network location.
The 3rd-party apps CarbonCopyCloner and ChronoSync may be workable alternatives.
EDIT:  And, if you're going to do that, you could back up from the Time Capsule to a USB drive connected to the TC's USB port.  Second TC not required.

  • How to divide time capsule for Mac and PC back up

Want to know if a cant use my time capsule to do back up for my MacBook and do manual back up for the PC of my wife

How to divide time capsule for Mac and PC back up
It is not possible to divide or "partition" the Time Capsule disk......unless you pull the hard drive from the Time Capsule (which voids the warranty), place it in a separate enclosure or caddy, connect the enclosure directly to your Mac, and use Disk Utility to partition the disk. Then, you must reinstall the disk back in the Time Capsule.
This is a lot of work....best done by an experienced technician. The operation will likely cost more than the cost of the Time Capsule.
Life would be tons easier if you used the Time Capsule with your MacBook and added a separate USB drive to the PC.
If you do not need to divide or partition the Time Capsule storage space, and you are willing to have the Mac and PC share the same space, take a look at an application like Macrium Reflect to backup the PC to the Time Capsule disk.
Still, having done this in the past, things would be much faster and easier for you if you use a separate USB drive for the PC.

  • Trying to connect Airport time capsule to my leopard iOS mac.  Downloaded software for time capsule for snow leapard/leopard but still says I need more software.  What do I need?

Trying to connect Airport time capsule to my leopard iOS mac.  Downloaded software for time capsule for snow leapard/leopard but still says I need more software.  What do I need? I have a 10.5.7 iOS (Leopard).  It connects to wifi at speeds in the airport and has plenty of storage capacity and memory.

If your Time Capsule looks like this..
Please review the System Requirements to set up and administer the device.....
    Setup and Administration
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 6 or later and AirPort Utility 1.3
Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.5 or later and Airport Utility 6.3 or higher

If it is asking for an APlle ID password for an ID you do not recognize then you have stumbled upon the Activation Lock feature of IOS7.

  • Time capsule wireless works with computer but not  other devices.

Wireless internet from the time capsule works with the laptop, but not with any other devices or computers. They pick up the wireless signal, but can't connect. Any ideas?

Thanks for the response. I appreciate any help you can give. The internet modem is from Insight Cable and is an Arris TM602G.
Wireless Mode = create a wireless network
    Radio Mode = automatic
    Wireless Security = WPA2 Personal
    Internet > Internet Connection tab
    Connect Using = Ethernet
    Connection Sharing = Off
    Internet > DHCP tab
DHCP Beginning Address = ? I'm not seeing where to get this info.
    DHCP Ending Address = ?
I did notice on the summary that it shows 4 wireless clients, which I assume are the computer and the other devices that can't get the internet but get the wireless.

  • Home sharing is working fine for musics and videos but not for apps. What is wrong?

Home sharing is working fine for musics and videos but not for apps. What is wrong?

i had the same issue as everyone here after upgrading to itunes 10.x.  vista could see xp home share.  ipod touch could see xp home share.
neither could see vista home share.
after several hours of authorizing de-authorizing, rebooting router etc, i knew it had to be a firewall thingy with vista as xp was working fine
i went to this article http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2553 and followed the instructions.  itunes was already in my vista exception list.  on a hunch i deleted the itunes exception and followed the steps to add it again and boom it worked!! i could now see my vista machine from my ipod touch immediately.
something must have screwed up the firewall exception on the upgrade to itunes 10.x
it worked for me, i hope this helps others

  • HT204053 How does my spouse get the benefits of using my iCloud for contacts and calanders but not messages, etc?

How does my spouse get the benefits of using my iCloud for contacts and calanders but not messages, etc?

iCloud is designed for personal use and not for managing multiple access.  If you gives your password to someone else, this person can benefit everything including access to purchase with your account, email, etc.
You should rather consider having each one an iCloud account and then, create and share a calendar.  As for contact, you can send them to your spouse to be save in her account but they cannot be shared nor synced.

  • Set up printer connected to Time Capsule via USB and print without WiFi

Is there any way to do this? We use a Time Capsule for daily backups, for both Mac and PCs, and have a printer that we would like to share between all of them. Before, we had the printer connected to a PC as this allowed both PCs and Macs to print to it, but of course the PC had to be on. For whatever reason, when we plugged the printer into a Mac, the PCs couldn't connect or print.
From what Apple has told me, I have two options:
    1. Share the printer via WAN, which is not desirable, as any other office could then print to our printer.
    2. Create a hidden, password-protected, wireless network. This causes problems for two reasons. Firstly, we are not permitted to "extend" the network, and by creating a wireless network and attaching it onto the ethernet network, we are basically doing that. Secondly, if we did create this wireless network, computers that connected to the network to be able to see the printer would then default to the wireless network for internet access, rather than the ethernet connection.
If I am misunderstanding something, or someone has an idea of how to password protect a printer connected to a Time Capsule without using wifi, I would greatly appreciate it.

Sharing via WAN through the Time Capsule, for whatever reason, is not password protected. Any computer in our building can see the printer, and use it. When we were sharing the printer through the PC / Bonjour, when setting up the printer on a new machine, a valid username and password from the connected PC was required.
I should add that the purpose of trying to share this via the Time Capsule, rather than the PC, is that the Time Capsule is always on, and we notice an increase in performance when the PCs are powered down regularly.

  • Hard drive networked through Time Capsule for Windows and Mac

My previous setup was using an old Dell laptop with Windows XP to network share both my Samsung laser printer and my Seagate GoFlex 2 tb drive formated to NTFS, and all Windows 7, Windows 8, and OS X 10.6+ machines in the house were successfully able to connect to both. My wife replaced her old Macbook Pro she got in 2008 and decided to get a Time Capsule as well to backup her iMac and new Macbook Air. I decided to take advantage of the "features" of the Time Capsule, and hubbed the single port, just as I had done with the old Dell. After installing Bonjour on the Windows 7 machines I was able to share the printer just fine, however I'm still unable to share the drive for some reason.
The Airport utility on both the Macs and Win 7 machines see the hard drive in utilities, the box in Airport for file sharing is checked, guest access turned off, secure disk sharing with device password, and workgroup matches my workgroup. However the hard drive still doesn't appear. I tried formatting it to FAT32 based on some older forums posted in 2008-2009 range, but then realized the hard drive is too large for that, and I'm not looking to have a bunch of smaller partitions. I tried exFAT, but that failed too. Now I'm back to NTFS, but still with the issue that none of the machines recognize hard drive via the Explorer/Finder.
The Time Capsule is functioning as a backup with Time Machine for her Mac's, but I'm looking to use the external drive connected more as a media center storage and storing selected individual files (think networked thumb drive/USB stick) from my machines.

Put the seagate drive onto the Mac and format it Mac OS extended journaled. (HFS+ for short) and you will also need to change the partition over to GUID from MBR.
TC has very limited formats it can recognise.. FAT32 and HFS+ (well FAT16 but that doesn't count). exfat no, ntfs no, Really with FAT32 being hopeless.. you have one choice .. HFS+.
The Windows machines can handle files to the drive just fine.. because it is a network drive.. it is offered to the network as SMB protocol.. in windows it will look like NT server. The precise format of the drive is irrelevant and is handled by the firmware of the TC.
But do reset the partition scheme to GUID.. not MBR.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ph5845
You can even put 2 or more partitions on it.. but only one is fine.

  • Use time capsule for storage as well as time machine

I would like to use my time capsule for file storage as well as automatically backing up my mac using time machine.  I had my time capsule & time machine set up and it was backing up just fine.  I dragged some files over to the time capsule manually through finder and I began to get error messages saying time machine could not back up my mac because it was already in use.

Simply reboot the TC to get access..
But did you drag the files inside the sparsebundle.. that would be very bad.
Any files dragged to TC and deleted on the computer will have no backup and no possiblity of backup by time machine. Things die.. then what happens to the files.
    Just answered that question.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4734078?tstart=0
People should learn the TC has limitations.. it is a sealed unit and when things go wrong Apple doesn't help.

  • Can i use the time capsule for storage or just backup?

I asked my husband to go and buy a separate harddrive so that we could use to store all of our photos on separately as opposed to the computer (as its full and we cant download any more photos!). He came back with the Time Capsule.
from what i can understand it can only be used for backups and not for direct stoarge - is this correct? Im hoping that i can use it for storage and somehow copy all my photos from my Mac onto the Time Capsule and then we can access them from the network which i just created with the Time Capsule
Or do i need to buy something else?
    appreciate anyones help
    Thanks

It is far from ideal. But it does depend on what you are doing. Are you going to store you iphoto library on the TC then it is not recommended.
    Store files on the TC.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/24380694#24380694
This is asked several times a day.. obviously people are struggling with their latest SSD being too small.
The TC is not suitable for network file server.. but many people having no choice press it into service as such.
It cannot be partitioned. It was and is and ever shall be a backup device for Time Machine.
    Major issues.
    1. No backup.. no way Time Machine can backup a network drive. No place to backup to.. So all your files will be at risk. And you will need to buy a third party like CCC to do backup.
    2. The TC cannot be partitioned and mixing TM backups and data is not great.
    3. The drive is slow to spin up and quick to spin down.. there is no controls.
    4. iPhoto in particular can easily corrupt its entire library with wireless networking causing a disconnection to one photo. Even if you do this;;; do not move your photo library... you have been warned!!
    5. iTunes will constantly lose connection to the library. The disk is too slow to respond.. itunes on the computer will constantly spit out errors. Even in the midst of streaming the TC can spin down the disk due to caching.
    6. Do not use any live files on the TC no matter what else you do.. if you edit files in whatever program the file must be on the local hard disk.
    7. The only suitable location for most libraries is a computer. You can plug in an external hard disk.
