  • Let xrandr set display number? [SOLVED]

I have a laptop running Arch-x86_64 with openbox, and I am using xrandr and a custom script to connect two external displays to my laptop, one VGA and one DVI. Since the graphics card (ATi Mobility Radeon HD2400XT) only supports two screens simultaneously, I turn LVDS off before turning the external monitors on. My problem is, that whenever starting the laptop with external monitors connected at boot, the DVI screen is set as display one, and the VGA as display two. When I connect the screens after logging in and starting openbox, the VGA screen is set as display one, and the DVI screen as display two. Is there any way to explicitly set which monitor to use as display one/primary in xrandr?
The shell script is the exact same in both cases, and looks like this:
    xrandr --output LVDS --off
    xrandr --output DVI-0 --auto
    xrandr --output VGA-0 --auto --right-of DVI-0

I sat down today and merged 4 script files into one, and noticed a certain behaviour of xrandr. The code:
    xrandr --output VGA-0 --off
    xrandr --output LVDS --auto --primary
    xrandr --output DVI-0 --off
Turns my external monitors off, and sets my display resolution correctly. Though, invoking the following:
xrandr --output VGA-0 --off --output LVDS --auto --primary --output DVI-0 --off
Does absolutely nothing. Here's my now working script:
    #/bin/sh
usage="This script is used to set monitor configuration. Usage: monitor {laptop|workstation|presentation|check}"
    DVI=$(xrandr | grep "DVI-0 connected");

I have experimented with the -s parameter of xcalib, and found that I don't know how to manually load icc profiles for the external monitors. That will have to be discussed in another thread, though. This can be marked as solved now, thanks for the help guys!

  • GTX 580 Twin Frozr II/OC dual monitor/second DVI problem

    Hello,
I am experiencing a problem with my new dual monitor setup.
A few days after I installed the new monitor (DELL U2312HM), the DVI with the old monitor (LG M208WA) stopped from working.
The old monitor went in power saving mode, and I couldn't wake it up.
After a few days working with only 1 monitor, without taking any further actions such as drivers re-installation etc, the pc boots and the monitor wakes up again!
Today, stopped from working again, after 1 month of normal dual monitor operation.
The monitors are connected to the following DVI Ports (starting to count from left to right, as we face the ports with the PCI-E interface being in the left):
DELL @ DVI#1 (set as primary)
       LG @ DVI#2
    So, I tried the following:
    1. Switched the monitors to the other DVI (DELL @ DVI#2, LG @ DVI#1).
Result: LG monitor works fine, DELL monitor went power saving.
(Meaning that the monitor in DVI#2 is still in power saving mode)
    2. Re-installed (in clean mode) the nVidia drivers
       Result: no change
    3. Switched the DVI cables
       Result: no change
    4. Searched the forum for similar case:
Result: I couldn't find something similar to my problem...
Is there a test/diagnostic that I can run on the DVI ports to see if there is a hardware issue with my VGA card (if this is the problem)?
Is there something else I should try?
    Thanks in advance,
    Dimitris

    Is your problem completely gone?
I have the lightning version, same thing happened to me. I will try the last thing that fixed your problem - but if it does not solve or problems start again, I guess the best option is to get a replacement RMA.
This is the second time the 2nd DVI stopped and then started again (with the method mentioned).
After the last time it started working, everything is fine.
While having the problem, I tried to plug in only 1 monitor in that DVI and boot the pc, the boot screen appeared fine, but when entering windows it went power saving.
So i guess it is not an issue of RMA.
I guess Windows or the nVidia drivers under some unknown (to me) circumstances are causing this.
Please post here if my solution worked for you too.

  • Missing DVI Mode

Hi, my sky tv was set up on the DVI mode but for some reason the DVI has gone from my source menu on the tv,  so i have now had to plug in a scart lead from sky box to tv and use AV1...the colour has also darkened and i think the sound is only on mono now i'm using the AV1 option..Anyone know if its an issue with the sky box or would it be something wrong with my tv not seeing the usb jack..don't ant to call out an engineer if its not needed..  Cheers

Sky+HD boxes have HDMI, scart and composite video outputs (the latest boxes don't have composite). They don't have a DVI output so this must be an issue either with your TV or with the HDMI to DVI adaptor that you're presumably using, rather than with your Sky box. I'm not sure where the USB port you mention comes into the equation.

  • No movie playback with video adaptor

    OK, here's a poser...
Setting up my Macbook as a temporary AppleTV. Front Row is working perfectly, streaming shared content from my desktop. So long as I am viewing on the Macbook's screen, everything is as it should be.
Here's the problem. I connect the Macbook to my TV set, using a Mini DVI-Video adaptor. Everything works fine - music, DVD, photos - except for Movies. They appear in the list, but the preview window to the left of their names is black. If I play them, the audio plays, but no video, just a black screen.
I know it's not a codec issue, because as I said, they work fine on the laptop screen. I have also fiddled with display properties, changing the refresh rate, screen resolution and colour profile, all with no effect.
    Any ideas?

Yes, it's mirrored. As I said, front row is working perfectly...except for the videos. The interface does exactly what is should, but neither the video previews, nor the videos themselves play properly - it's sound only. And again, it's only on the TV that this happens. When viewing on the screen, they play fine.

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 only detect USB storage drives if I restart the system

Hi, I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 with an weird behaviour. I cannot connect any USB drive (not USB external hard disk neither pendrives). Windows device manager detects the device as
Mass Storage Device, but with a yellow exclamation sign. The exact error code is:
    The device cannot start.
However, if I restart the machine keeping the USB disk plugged, the hard disk (or pendrive) is correctly detected and usable.
    I've tried:
    Update mass storage driver.
    Review HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\usbstor "Start"
and is 3 (I think is right)
I've tried with different usb hard disks that are working in other PCs.
I've tried with large (>1TB) disks and small (8GB) pendrives.
I've tried all available USB ports, front and back, with same behaviour.
Always I get a yellow exclamation  (Device cannot start) and if I restart the computer the device is working perfectly.
    Can someone help me?
    Thanks in advance
Edit: Here is the log of connecting a Kingstone USB 8GB pendrive

I tried, but windows says that the best driver is alredy installed.
Now I've just tried to delete (uninstall) absolutly all devices under Universal Serial Bus Controller
(host controllers, root hubs, etc) into Device Manager, and then I've click on
Scan for hardware changes to force reinstall of all USB drivers. After that I've connected my USB external hard disk and has been correctly recognized and its working. However I don't know if when I'll restar the server and connect a new one usb device
it will continue working or not. I'll try later, because this is a production server.
I've tried for drivers into HP site to update or reinstall, but there isn't any driver for motherboard or USB controller. It's an HP ML350 G6.

  • Displays no longer recognised, it is my video card?

I have two Dell 22" widescreen monitors, and two computers plugged into both them via the DVI and VGA inputs. One is a 2x3.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon Mac Pro and the other is an older G5 PowerPC, both are running Leopard, the G5 is on 10.5.4, the Mac Pro is on 10.5.8.
I have them set so that the DVI input on the left monitor and the VGA input on the right monitor is for the Mac Pro and the remaining inputs are for the G5.
This has worked perfectly for the last year, and allows me to switch views between our loading station (the G5) and are encoding and graphics station (Mac Pro, got to love multi-tasking staff).
Unfortunately this morning, the Mac Pro is not showing on the monitors. I can hear it power up fine, and the monitors work fine for the G5.
I have screen sharing on the Mac Pro so that I can check on rendering status from other rooms. Usually it defaults to the dual screen view but this morning, the desktop picture has reverted to the standard blue background and the display is set to 1280x1024, but at least I know the computer is working.

Kernel Extension Info: No Kext Loaded
    Displays:
    *Display Connector*
And then there is nothing listed (whereas on the G5 this lists the Dell monitors)
Does anyone have any troubleshooting suggestions? Or better yet, answers? Is it the video card?

Same issue here, My Mac Pro will not wake monitors from sleep (intermittent). This is a huge pain in the rear. I use my Mac Pro as my alarm clock. System wakes at 6:45, Apple Script kicks off from iCal at 7:00 and starts iTunes and pull up the weather and news. As the speakers are integrated with the display when they do not wake from sleep, I wake up late.
I can connect via ARD when the Mac Pro is in this state, System profiler says there is no Kext loaded. When quit system profiler then enter the shell and do a "sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/ATI2600Controller.kext" and then restart system profiler it is the same result No Kext Loaded.
This all screams Firmware or Booter issue to me. The system does not cast any Blinking Power Led Errors (or tones), The System Chimes Normally but does not go to a happy gray screen that is the booter loading critical Kexts.
Below is my System Profiler from when the Kext does load correctly. Please include your System profiler report when your Mac Pro is in a working state as well.
I still love My Mac pro... but I cant afford to be late to work any more...

  • CS4 - Is there a way to adjust gamma for second monitor or send to overlay?

One thing that is evident when I edit in Premiere CS4 using the AVCHD 1080i 60 template is that the preview in the second monitor, which in my case is my TV set connected using a DVI to HDMI cable, is that the output is too dark compared to what it should be. Darker areas of the frame sometimes even get crushed into black when the same footage, when played directly from the camcorder, or even burned to blu-ray and played, is noticeably brighter and at the right black levels.
This doesn't happen when editing in Vegas Pro 8, or when the untouched footage is played through other video player, including Windows 7 Media Center.
A workaround for this problem can be to go to the graphics card control panel, in my case ATI Catalyst, and adjust the gamma for the second monitor, with the problem being that when you're done editing in Premiere you have to go back to the normal gamma. At one point I had setup two profiles in Catalyst with shortcuts and it worked well, but one day Catalyst simply lost the profiles and noticing how buggy it was I wasn't going to keep creating profiles so that Catalyst would delete them.
So my question is, since it's not in the preferences, is there some settings file or registry address that I can tweak to make Premiere display a brighter gamma of my choice?
And this may be a dead end, but is there a way to send the output of the second monitor to the overlay so that it can take advantage of the graphic's card video capabilities and display video smoothly? It's nice to have a preview of the timeline, but it's rather annoying if I have to go to the Catalyst control panel and adjust gamma before editing and after editing and that motion is jerky and not interlaced when I'm editing interlaced content.

You need the VESA mount option. That way your minimum angle would be completely vertical and you could open it to a negative 10 degrees.
    Hope this helps.

  • IMac 27inch (late2009) 2nd display connecting a powerbook (2012) with mini displayport cable is not working

    Any solution to solve this?

I'm trying to connect my new Dell U2713H to my MBPr early 2013 (runs Yosemite 10.10.2) using MiniDisplayPort-to-DisplayPort cable but I'm getting the floating msg on the Dell "No DVI-D cable. The display will go into Power Save Mode in 5 minutes." DP is plugged into the input DP port on the monitor. And of course power cable is plugged in as well. Do I miss something?
You probably need to press the buttons usually located in the bottom right corner of the screen to tell the screen to use the Displayport socket and not the DVI socket. It sounds like it is currently set to use the DVI socket which of course is not connected to your computer. As a result of not finding a computer attached to the DVI socket it then decides there is no point staying turned on and instead goes in to energy saver mode waiting for something to appear on the DVI socket.

  • External Monitor: Is this even possible?

I want to color correct using an external monitor. My set up is mini DVI out to VGA to S Video. Everything I've read, people get their video out by firewire to tape deck to monitor. Is my set up possible?

Your setup won't get you proper color. Because that DVI out is sending an RGB signal, NOT the original YUV signal. You either need to route thru a camera or deck via firewire (or ADVC-300).

  • Connecting a Samsung SyncMaster 932b to an early 2009 iMac

So I have looked at most of the recent responses to adding the 2nd monitor. I have tried all recommendations. When I turn the SM monitor on while my computer is on, i see the leopard sky background, then the monitor goes black. I am able to turn on and see the display for about 3 seconds. The display is detected in preferences. Can anyone help me figure out what to do here? It is connected by a mini-DVI then a DVI to DVI.

Since I have no idea what "all recommendations" are unless you specifically state them, I'll have to ask...
    Did you reset PRAM?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
    Did you reset SMC?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
When you reset SMC, your initially started it up with nothing else connected, then connected just your keyboard/mouse. Did you try connecting your external display when no other peripherals were connected?
In System Preferences Displays pane Display tab, click the +Gather Windows+ button. This will bring the Displays pane from the external screen to the iMac's screen. Try changing the setting, such as resolution. Does that have any effect?
On the Samsumg display, make sure the button is set to use the DVI port (if it also has a VGA port). Take a look at the built-in onscreen menu, to see if there is any setting related signal detection and powering OFF. If the display has a recessed reset button, try pressing it to put the display back to its default settings.
Do you have access to another computer than you can connect to the display using the DVI connection (and the same cable)?

  • Problems with getting 2nd screen sharp

    Dear everyone!
Not too long ago I've bought myself a Macbook Pro 15 inch (version 10.7.3) and with it I also got myself a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter (by Moshi).
After I got those I also got myself a HDMI-cable to connect my MBP to my Samsung tv (1080p full HD).
After getting the 2 connected and inserting the right variables (resolution to 1080p)(frequency to 60 hz), also tried to change the settings of the TV itselft but the screen is just VERY blurry, not sharp at all.
Does anyone have a solution for this problem? Or am I missing something important ? Some help would be greatly appriciated.

On the Samsung TV bring up the Source List and highlight HDMI1/DVI.  Click the Tools button on the remote and select Edit Name and set the name to DVI PC.

  • Macbook Pro Thunderbolt and HDMI displays switch on wake up

    Hi there,
Currently using a late 2013 15" Macbook Pro., latest version of Mavericks. I have one display hooked up through Thunderbolt->DVI, with a second set up through HDMI->DVI.
There seems to be an issue where on waking the monitors up from sleep mode (about 10 minutes inactivity time) the displays will turn on, immediately go black (inlcuding the Macbook Pro screen), and then switch such that all windows on one are now on the other.
I can't really repliate this, as it seems to just happen randomly. All I can say in my detective work, is that the HDMI->DVI hooked-up monitor tends to take a little more time to turn on after sleep, whereas the Thunderbolt->DVI monitor comes up immediately.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

I've noticed that the HDMI connection seems to lag the Thunderbolt on wake as well. I haven't had the switching issue, though. I use my Thunderbolt display as the primary (menu bar in the preferences) - maybe try doing that if you're using your HDMI out as the primary.
You can always try resetting the SMC and PRAM as well.
