Setting up usb keyboard with Garageband?!

Hello, i Have a Yamaha PSR - K1 keyboard. And i would like to use this as a midi kayboard in Garageband, could anyone give me some directions on how to do this?? Im kinda newbie on this subject.
Matt

First of all: You'll have to understand the difference between audio and midi. Maybe here:
http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/FAQPages/AudioNotMIDI.html
Midi signals are not sound. So the basic question is:
• Do you want to use your keyboard to trigger GB's internal sounds? (-> Midi connection)
• Do you want to record sounds that you play on your keyboard (-> Audio connection)
• Do you want to trigger your keyboard's sounds with midi stuff that you recorded in GB (-> not possible in GB, only with a plugin)
So let's assume you're trying the first option. That implies, according to your numbering:
(1) Forget the Sound prefs, you're not transmitting sound
(2) Midi setup seems to be fine, since GB is recognizing your interface
(3) There's no need for any setup in GB - it's listening to all midi channels when you press "record"
So, with your keyboard connected and recognized - have you set up a software track? Do the little LEDs light up when you play notes?
Since the interface seems to be fine - if you don't register any midi data coming in, I guess it must be your keyboard not sending data - and sorry, I'm not familiar with it, so I can't offer any help on this but ask: You're sure you plugged the round midi plug into the "midi out" jack of the keyboard?

  • Trouble using USB keyboard with GarageBand

I have a Yamaha DGX-305 keyboard with a USB out. I want to record the real instrument using GarageBand, rather than using MIDI input. Is this possible? GarageBand isn't recognizing the keyboard when I simply plug it in. I've downloaded what looks to be the appropriate driver form the Yamaha site. It sounds like some keyboards are set up for plug-and-play. Is there a way I can get this to work where GarageBand records the real instrument via USB? Thanks.

I've downloaded what looks to be the appropriate driver form the Yamaha site.
But maybe it's not the right one. Is it this one?
When you go to GB's Audio/Midi prefs, does it detect 0 midi devices or 1?

  • Using an external usb keyboard with garageband

Hi there, Recieved my 20' imac today and am delighted with it overall had no problems and all programs run smoothy. I installed my garageband jam packs (I have four which I bought from apple) and then plugged in my m-audio radium 49 (also purchased from apple) keyboard and was looking forward to giving garageband a good workout. Unfortunately my intel mac doesnt seem to recognise keyboard at all and will not work. As I have spent many hundreds of pounds on garageband extras does anyone have any suggestions on how to get this standard apple recommended keyboard (its still on sale on site with no mention of incompatibility with intel imac) to work.
Have tested keyboard on a g4 setup and it worked straight away in garageband any help would be most appreciated thanks
ipods, intel 20' imac with 2 gig of ram   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

unfortunately I do not have a second mac (g5 or otherwise as I sold it when I bought new one lol) to try this method. I did notice m-audio had updated there drivers for osx 10.4 but unfortunately these drivers only work for g5/g4/g3 mac and not for the intel mac keyboards so at the moment I do not have a workaround for this problem. I have emailed m-audio and asked for a timeframe for drivers but have not received a response yet so at the moment I am unaware of any usb midi keyboard that works natively for a intel mac which is rather tragic lol as garageband is basically unuseable without a method of inputting midi but hopefully someone will prove me wrong and suggest a solution. On another issue my usb keyboard and mouse had the freezing problem that seems quite common but after a lengthy phonecall to apple I asked for a replacement wireless bluetooth keyboard and mouse which I have received and can report works absolutely perfectly so there may have been a bad batch of usb keyboard/mouse combinations made. Otherwise everything is working perfectly and I am delighted with the new imac

  • TS1702 Using an iPad camera connection kit and a MIDI to USB cable to interface a MIDI keyboard with GarageBand. It works flawlessly... almost...

I'm using an iPad camera connection kit and a MIDI to USB cable to interface a MIDI keyboard with GarageBand. It works flawlessly... until I use the sustain pedal. Once the pedal is depressed while playing a given note, from then on, the pedal itself plays the note every time it is depressed. It's not the keyboard or the pedal. I've tried others. That leaves the app or the connection between the iPad and the keyboard. I find it hard to believe I'm the only person who is experiencing this problem. Anyone have a fix?

Yes.  There are a ton of write-ups on how to do the connections.   I connect my m-audio Keystation 61 es through the CCK to my iPad and use GarageBand to control it.  Some keyboards require a powered USB hub to make things work.  I use a belkin 4 port hub in my own setup.   Here is a link to tested / verified keyboards that work via the CCK:  http://iosmidi.com/devices/

  • IBM USB keyboard with TrackPoint: how to adjust sensitivity

I connect the IBM USB keyboard with TrackPoint (UltraNav) to my Lenovo W510 using Windows 7. How can I adjust the sensitivity of the external TrackPoint? In control panel > mouse settings, I can only adjust settings of the onboard TrackPoint. Is this a driver issue, or I did it wrong? I tried downloading different drivers but none allows me that. Current drivers I use:
ThinkPad USB Keyboard with TrackPoint v1.06 (tpusbkybdwtrackpoint_106.exe)
ThinkPad USB Keyboard Hotkeys v2.0.1.3 (q5kyb07us13.exe)
    ThinkPad UltraNav Driver v15.1.19.0 (6hgy31ww.exe (64-bit))
Actually tried newer drivers but the results are the same. Thanks for any suggestion!

    http://leadorg.wordpress.com/technology/thinkpad-usb-keyboard-with-trackpoint-software/
after installing the required Lenovo driver explained in the post above. I get this option in my mouse setting under control panel.
Do you see this specific option? (there is new 1.07 driver released, so try to install that and see whether give you the option of adjusting the usb kb's trackpoint sensitivity).

  • Using Thinkpad Trackpoint USB Keyboard with MacBook Pro, Air, Retina (with pictures)

Using Thinkpad Trackpoint USB Keyboard with MacBook Pro, Air, Retina (with pictures)
The purpose of this discussion thread is to:
    (1) Get community thoughts around using alternative and complimentary mousing approaches with MacBooks
    (2) To share a current and searchable set of resources for those interested in leveraging a best-of-both-worlds approach for using a non-Apple Trackpoint Keyboard with an Apple MacBook.
    (3) To level-set the fact that a Thinkpad Trackpoint USB Keyboard works with MacBooks automatically and instantly out-of-the-box.
Note: I created this discussion because I found that all the other discussion threads related to using a Thinkpad Trackpoint Keyboard with MacBooks were archived and therefore I could not post my thoughts there.
I have been using MacBooks for 3+ years now.  Airs, Pros, Retinas etc.  I LOVE the built-in MacBook Apple Trackpad.  It is wonderful.  Apple has no equal as far as Trackpads go.
In addition, I have been using the Thinkpad Trackpoint USB Keyboard with my MacBooks for ~2 years, and below is why I have found BOTH the Apple Trackpad and Thinkpad Trackpoint to be great.
The Trackpoint and Trackpad both have their sweet spots.  Personally I use the built-in Apple Trackpad on my MacBooks when I'm using my MacBook for less than 1 hour, loosely speaking.  If I am going to be heads-down for more than 1 hr writing, reading, surfing, graphic designing, programming, workshop facilitating, teaching, mindmapping, presenting, demoing, etc. then I pull out my "Lenovo Thinkpad USB Keyboard with Trackpoint (55Y9003) > https://www.google.com/search?&q=lenovo+thinkpad+trackpoint+usb+keyboard
I know many will laugh at me for using a Thinkpad Trackpoint Keyboard with a MacBook...  Keeping an open mind, let's just agree that there is historical precedence for alternative mousing devices.  If I could only choose one, I would use the Apple MacBook built-in Trackpad exclusively, however with alternatives come potential benefits.  Keep in mind that Apple, Microsoft, Logitech and many other companies make millions of dollars each year providing alternative peripheral devices for computers, and mousing is no exception.  Regardless, I just want to share my positive experiences using both. :-)
Why should you care?  For *some* people the following is true and meaningful.  The Trackpoint (the little red eraser head stick thingy) in the midle of the keyboard enables useful and unique dynamics/use-cases, including:
You don't have to take your hand(s) off the keyboard to mouse
You can independantly click without accidentally moving the mouse (Yes I know some people don't have issues with this)
You don't run out of finger-gesture runway when you're moving your mouse across the screen (I know this is a gray area for some people)
For mouse-movement-heavy applications (e.g. Graphics, drawing, etc.) the Trackpoint *is at times* more exacting
Below I share some pictures (which I know *look* ridiculous to some people, but none-the-less help demystify what this looks like.  And, while ridiculous looking, it is actually quite thin and elegant once you get over the initial shock of seeing these two diverse technologies combined in this way.
Rest assured, the keyboard shown below (google "55Y9003") is VERY light, thin and fits in almost any laptop case/backpack easily so it is not a big deal to carry it, if you work on-the-go.  In addition:
It is UNCANNY how well it fits on top of the keyboard space of all MacBooks.
It fits perfectly around the corners of the MacBook Pro/Air/Retina keyboard
Note: I took one of the 5 rubber feet/pads off the bottom of my keyboard, the one in the middle
Lastly, you can actually use the built-in Apple Trackpad at the SAME TIME as the Trackpoint Keyboard.
It is quite a nice best-of-both-worlds approach for people that like the benefits of the "Why should you care?" use cases above.
Please reply and comment with your thoughts and please let's keep it positive, constructive and friendly :-)
    Pictures Below:
My two Retina MBPs, one with and one without the keyboard, so you can easily see the difference.  (As if you wouldn't)
A slightly closer-up shot of just the RMBP with the Trackpoint Keyboard on top
Please reply and comment with your thoughts and please let's keep it positive, constructive and friendly :-)

Newer Bluetooth version of the ThinkPad External Trackpoint Keyboard available...
The new version is smaller, so you can use your MacBook Trackpad at the same time as your Trackpoint keyboard.
    Here is the Lenovo model/Part Number# 0B47190
Here is a picture of what it looks like:
Note: Just like the older larger USB model keyboard, there is a rubbery footpad in the middle of the bottom of the keyboard that I just peeled off.  Otherwise, it makes the "H" key press accidentally under-neath the keyboard.  Once I took that off, it fit perfectly over and around the built-in MacBook keyboard, so I can optionally put it on top of my MacBook for easy typing. :-)

  • Middle click settings - ThinkPad Compact USB Keyboard with TrackPoint

I want use middle button as third button, not only for scrolling. How to set up?
On internal keyboard it is possible (Lenovo E420), but on the external (ThinkPad Compact USB Keyboard with TrackPoint) is not. I use Windows 7.

    Help please.

  • Using Yamaha Keyboard with GarageBand

Tried my Yamaha keyboard with GarageBand for the first time. To my amazement, it worked. However:
Cant' seem to get the volume up (on the Yamaha Keyboard). Checked all the volume settings, including the iMac's System Preferences, GarageBand volume settings but it's still relatively "soft."
I'm using a USB 2.0 15-ft. cable. Could the length of the cable have anything to do with this. Would a shorter USB 2.0 cable.........say 4-ft. ...... make a difference?
Thanks in advance for your suggestions

don't think I have some of the features to control
sound you suggest. (GB's Track Fader? Master Volume
    Fader? "Generator" settings. "Pencil" icon.)
You have all these things. Each track has a fader (volume control), and at the bottom right of the window is the Master Fader (volume Control). Select a track and open Track Info ("i"nfo) icon), click details, and the pencil icon to the right of the Generator PopUp menu.
preferences, it does not show that USB port as a line
    in......
Because it is NOT a line in. MIDI ≠ Audio.
just internal mic and audio line in
    As it should be.
I don't understand why, when going to the audio
settings........both on Mac audio preferences and
GarageBand..........it doesn't show that USB as an
    audio line in.
    Because MIDI ≠ Audio
Also tried with Sound Studio...........a music
recording application that came with my iMac when I
purchased it a couple of years ago. It has worked
with the Mac's audio line in and with the internal
mic.........but doesn't pick up anything from the
    keyboard via USB cable in.
Because there is no Audio to pick up. MIDI ≠ Audio.
Could the length of my USB cable have anything to do
with this? I am using a 15-ft. USB 2.0 cable.
    No.

  • What happened to Lenovo ThinkPlus USB Keyboard with UltraNav ?!?

    Hi all,
I want a keyboard that works EXACTLY like my T410 native keyboard. I found the ThinkPlus USB Keyboard with UltraNav that looks wireless, but it's been discontinued as of Sept 2009...anyone know what's up with that? I also saw this Lenovo Fingerprint Keyboard but it's not wireless and has no trackpoint or UltraNav, this one looks nice but it's not wireless and has no numpad or UltraNav, this one lacks the ThinkPad feel and look and reviews say the build quality is bad...so why do they have all these very mediocre keyboards...anyone know if they're in the process of releasing a GREAT keyboard with these features)?
My T410 is out of reach when its docked, so I need my keyboard to be wireless with UltraNav + trackpoint AND NUMPAD for data input, programmable keys, and of course a fingerprint scanner! I also need it to be able to affect my T410 EXACTLY as if I was using the built in keyboard... like using Fn + F_ to toggle display, power, radio settings, etc. I want it to have the same keys in the same locations and it needs extra media (volume, play, pause) keys and programmable keys to open programs/folders. I would like it to be rechargeable too. It would be great if it came with a good wireless mouse as well. I understand wireless fingerprint readers are not any more secure, and are probably even less secure so this I could do without...but they should still put it on the dock that recharges the keyboard and mouse!
Pretty much, why hasn't Lenovo come out with the perfect wireless keyboard for us ThinkPad fans? I know there are other companies out there, but I'd like to add type on a keyboard with traditional ThinkPad quality that IBM lovers have gotten used to!
    Thanks,
    O

I used to own a ThinkPlus USB Keyboard with UltraNav. It wasn't wireless, just standard USB. Unfortunately, it died after 5+ years of abuse.
That keyboard has been replaced by ThinkPad USB Keyboard with TrackPoint (55Y9003). If you search for that FRU number you'll find it available for sale.
The new model is closer to a current gen laptop keyboard (more so than the original ThinkPlus keyboard). But it is missing the numeric keyboard and the TrackPad part of the UltraNav.
There's a good story as to why the keyboard is wired and why the other components were removed:
    http://lenovoblogs.com/designmatters/?p=2364
    http://lenovoblogs.com/designmatters/?p=438
Yeah, unfortunately, I don't think Lenovo is going to produce exactly what you are looking for. Like you, I miss the numeric keypad.
But at least it's cheaper than before. You could buy a separate USB/wireless numeric keypad to with the savings.

  • ThinkPad USB Keyboard with TrackPoint (55Y9003) FRU

I'm trying to order a ThinkPad USB Keyboard with TrackPoint part no. 55Y9003 here in Bulgaria.
But here they are selling only the European/Bulgarian version with a slighly differerent layout and part no. 55Y9009.
I had this problem before with the old UltraNav Keyboard and the keboards for my X40, X60 and X61s. What I did then was to order the keyboards as a replacement.
So I need to find the FRU P/N to order it as a replacement. But I only know the FRU of the bulgarian version (57Y4647).
I remember it used to be easy to find it on the product page, though I may be mistaking as I can't find it now.
Please does anybody know where I can find the FRU P/N of part no. 55Y9003?
Also I don't understand why the retailer here in Bulgaria can't do that, but lets not overdo it :-)
    Solved!

    Never mind I found it

Still if anyone in Europe is ordering this keyboard have in mind that the enter is the fat one and not the one on the picture if you havent figured that out already about the keyboards in Europe.

  • Apple USB Keyboard with Numeric Keypad Problem

    Hi,
    I have a Mac Mini macOS 10.5.8
I just bought an apple USB keyboard with numerci keypad (aluminium) and am having problems
    1/ If i hit @ i get <
    2/ if i hit < i get @
3/ the function keys do not work : if i hit fn F11 it displays the desktop (as F11 does also), i was expecting lower volume
4/ if i hit fn F12 i get the widgets (as with F12) i was expecting higher volume
    etc....
It seems my USB keyboard with numeric keypad is not recognized.
If i look at the Keyboard Visualizer (top right) it displays a keyboard that does NOT look like mine, it is smaller.
Why isn't this keyboard correctly recognized ?
    Thanks
    Marc

ok thanks for the tip and yes i admit i didn't see that...
but it seems a little weird to have to upgrade all the OS to Snow Leopard just to use a keyboard.
That kind of new device should be configured through a driver to download...shouldn't it ?
I presume there's no keyboard driver that can solve my problem.. ?
so you confirm that if i pay for Snow Leopard and upgrade my OS, my keyword will definitely work correctly with my Mac Mini ?
    Thanks

    Hi Jochem,
I have an SK-8845 that I like a lot and I've been running driver version 1.06.  I didn't even know that 1.08 was out.  I'm not an employee, so I don't have any insight on future driver releases.  I've had some scrolling issues myself in some programs, but after I did this, I haven't had any issues.
I just installed your driver, (1.08) and everything seems to be working okay.  I haven't tested it fully yet.  I saved my old driver though, just in case.

  • Thinkpad USB Keyboard with Trackpoint

First, I want a bluetooth version for my Home Theater PC.
Second, Does anyone know if they will be updating the design to more closely match their newer keyboards.  I don't want to upgrade my x220 or my t510, because all of my keyboards match from my laptops to my desktops.
    Thanks!

there should be a bluetooth version of the latest ThinkPad keyboard coming out, the key layout will be slightly different to the Thinkpad USB keyboard with trackpoint.

  • External ThinkPad USB Keyboard with TrackPoint issues with scroll (55Y9003) and hotkeys on a x201

    Hello
Once more there is a glitch with the drivers for this external keyboard 55Y9003.
    I have the drivers:
16.2.19.13 for the ultranav system of the x201
    1.10 for the external keyboard
    My system is XP sp3.
The keyboard of the x201is fine relative to the one  55Y9003.
The scrolling is set to standard for both systems.
Please do not advise to select smooth; it is not a solution and the smooth scrolling has been systematically utterly unusable.
    The issues:
-the hotkeys on the external keyboards are not all working:
basically, fn+f4 and fn+nmlk work but the rest does not (say fn+f8)
-the scrolling of the external keyboard is not at all identical to the scrolling of the x201.
For instance, in pdfs viewed with foxit for instance, I have not a problem to scroll horizontally with the x201 starting with the hand tool.
WIth the external keyboard, whan I press the middle button to activate the scrolling, it remains the hand tool, I can scroll vertically but not horizontally.
FIrefox as also issues whith the middle button.
-the external keyboard still suffers from the sticky shift key.
I know the x201 and the 55Y9003 are no longer fashionable, but  Is there some directly  guy working at Lenovo who could help ?

I have the ThinkPad USB keyboard on a non-Lenovo desktop, and it works.
Yes the keyboard driver installs, but not the Lenovo System Interface Driver, for obvious reasons. All the buttons and TrackPoint work.
Yes the TrackPoint does not scroll in all programs. Search the community for "trackpoint scroll fix" and you will come up with instructions on how to fix this.
    I don't work for Lenovo. I'm a crazy volunteer!

From what I can tell this is a known issue with Yosemite.
