Setting up VPN with OS X Server/Netgear FVS318 and remote offices

I am a newbie to VPN and am hoping someone can help get the config right. We have an Xserve (Server 10.4) and a range of G5's (OS 10.4) in 3 remote offices and want to setup a VPN between the remote offices back to the xServe. All 3 remote office are behind their own WGT624 router. Our setup looking like this:
Remote Office G5 (OS 10.4)
|
|
Netgear WGT624 (with dynamic IP address supplied by ISP)
|
|
Cable Modem
|
|
**INTERNET**
|
|
Cable Modem
|
|
Netgear FVS318 (v1) with static IP of 61.xxx.xxx.xxx
|
|
xServe (OS X 10.4 Server)
Can someone please walk me through the setup we need at head office and how we setup the branch office.
Thanks

  • Need help setting up VPN with OS X Server 2.2

I just bought OS X Server in the hopes that it would be a simpler way to set up VPN for use with my iPhone.  I've tried a couple third party VPN configuration tools before with older versions of OSX but was never able to get it working.  Now I'm running 10.8.2 and Server 2.2.  I've made some progress, but I'm not quite there yet.
Here's what I have set up in the VPN window:
    And the user I created:
The User services show that VPN is selected:
I let the Server app configure my Airport Extreme, and it looks like it set up the port mapping:
    Here are my iPhone settings
-Server is set to my iMac's public IP address assigned by my ISP
-Password is the password I gave the user account
When I turn the VPN on in the iPhone I get:
    "Connecting..."
    "Starting..."
    "Authenticating..."
    then an error:
    "VPN Connection
    Authentification failed."
    What am I missing?
    Thanks,
    Sean

  • I want replace my desktop with a iPad to do emails and Microsoft office work. Can this be effectively done? What's the downside if any?

I want replace my desktop with a iPad to do emails and Microsoft office work. Can this be effectively done? What's the downside if any?

I'll go down your list one by one.
    1. Access mail - which I know that the iPad can do.
    Enough said.
    2. Save an excel or word or ppt of PDF attachment for review.
You can view these types of documents natively on the iPad as Tgara has mentioned.
    3. Open an review and maybe change a excel or word file.
There are many apps that allow this.  I personally prefer Apples iWork programs, Pages, Numbers, Keynote.  They tightly integrate with iCloud.
    4. Resave such above files.
With Pages, Number, Keynote you can save/resave files in iCloud and locally.  Also you could use dropbox to save your files on dropbox and provide a way for you to share a folder with coworkers/family and they can add/view/review files from there and you can see the changes on your device.
    5. Reply to a mail attaching a file.
This is possible in many ways.  From dropbox, or another app you can email files with the share button.
    6. Be able to rename files and store them in specific folders.
This goes back to dropbox/iCloud.  iOS doesn't really have a traditional file system.  If you save a PDF it isn't saved anywhere you can just open it.  You would have to open an app that supports view PDFs and select the PDF you wish to view.  The same goes for documents, spreadsheets and etc.
Hopefully this helps answer your questions.

  • Set up vpn on mac osx server

What is the most common reason that I can connect to the newly created vpn locally but not remotely (over the wan)?

I have had the same problem with setting up L2TP on Mavericks after upgrade.  After several failed attempts I have the following recepie.
To test this you need to have two separate networks to connect you VPN client to.  One should be the same as where the server is running and the other needs to be different so that the incoming traffic to your router is coming from the outside.
I'm assuming a setup with a router and behind it a local network with an OS X server running the VPN service (vpnd daemon)
    On the server
Note the local ip-adress of your server.  This should preferably be static.
Install the VPN fix from apple: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1716
In the OS X Server VPN Service create a VPN profile where VPN Host Name is local ip-adress of the VPN server.
Restart the VPN service and save the configuration file.
    On the router
Open ports 500, 1701 and 4500 to pass UDP traffic to the server.  Make sure to activate them in the router interface.
Make a note of your routers public IP address. This should be static.
If this keeps changing you can set up a dynamic domain name (http://dyndns.org)
Optional: verify that the ports are actually open using nmap:
sudo nmap -Pn -sU XX.XX.XX.XX -p500,1701,4500
    Password:
    Starting Nmap 6.40 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2014-02-14 14:21 CET
Nmap scan report for ... (XX.XX.XX.XX)
    Host is up (0.012s latency).
    PORT     STATE         SERVICE
    500/udp  open          isakmp
    1701/udp open|filtered L2TP
    4500/udp open|filtered nat-t-ike
Nmap done: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 1.29 seconds
XX.XX.XX.XX is the public IP-adress of the router.  You can also try the same on the local IP-address of the server.
    On the client
Copy the configuration file and install it by double klicking on the file.
Connect the client to the same local network as the vpn-server and activate the VPN connection.
Verify that the VPN connection comes up.
Up to this point, smooth sailing.
Now change the Server address to the IP-address of the router and turn on extra logging found under Advanced. Save the new configuration.
Bring up the VPN connection again.  Should work.  Right?
I did not for me.  The error complains about the L2TP-VPN-server not responding.
Digging deeper using the system logger I found the error
2014-02-14 14:43:31,039 racoon[60284]: IKE Packet: receive failed. (Malformed or unexpected cookie).
2014-02-14 14:43:31,039 racoon[60284]: Malformed cookie received or the initiator's cookies collide.
    2014-02-14 14:43:31,172 pppd[60283]: IPSec connection failed
    2014-02-14 14:43:31,172 racoon[60284]: vpn_control socket closed by peer.
    2014-02-14 14:43:31,173 racoon[60284]: received disconnect all command
So it sort of works, but complains about some bad cookie.
The simple change of the IP-address apparentely generates this error.
Now change the network of the client so that it is not on the same networks as the server.
Bring up the VPN again.  Now it just works.
So apparently, when the traffic is coming in from the outside the VPN connection just works.
If you change back to the local network of the server and the keep the router IP-address the error is back.
    Conclusion
The conclusion is that the client used for connecting to the VPN network must be on an outside network.
In retrospect, this makes sense since we should test using an environment that reproduces the actual use case. The crux is to ensure that the client traffic is coming in from the outside.
    Hope this helps.

  • Using MS Outlook settings to set up Evolution with an Exchange server

I am currently using Outlook with an Exchange server, and I would like to use Evolution instead.  I installed evolution and evolution-ews, and in going through the initial account setup, I am asked for a host URL and an OAB URL.  I'm not sure what these are and can't find them in Outlook.  Surely these paths are stored somewhere in Outlook, right?

When I used outlook before, I was able to log in through a web browser as another way to browse my mails when away from the office. The example in the link was
    https://server-ip.com/exchange
which is the same as I was able to use. Of course, I am almost sure the address can be different. With my limited knowledge, I would recommend just entering your credentials in Evolution and click "Authenticate". If all goes well, you should then be prompted for your password. If you don't have that option, try to login to that address from your web browser. If not, maybe you can get in touch with IT or the server admin to see if the outlook server is setup to allow webdav and if in fact that is the correct address.

  • Server 2003 routing and remote access not passing VPN traffic

I've inherited a network that has two IP scopes that are routed through a Windows 2003 server with Routing and Remote Access.  I can ping both sides (we'll call them HQ and Plant) internally.  My firewall has an IP from the HQ IP scope and when
I connect via VPN, I can see all the devices on the HQ network including the network card that is in the routing server for that "side".  However, if I'm connected via VPN, I cannot get to any of the IPs on the Plant side, not even the card
in the routing server.  The buck stops on the server.
I should mention, that the firewall assigns IP addresses that are on the HQ scope, so all VPN connections will have an address from that side.
I'm lost on how to get this set up so my VPN traffic coming in from the HQ side can be routed to the Plant devices.

    Hi,
To be honest, your statement confused me a bit.
VPN is used for external client get access to internal resource. When we setup VPN server, we usually have two NICs. We need choose a NIC that will be used when client initiate
a connection request. I prefer to call it external NIC card. The internal one will work as DHCP relay agent. So this is a single way connection. You cannot dial from internal to external.
If I misunderstood you, please elaborate what you are trying to do.
    Hope this helps.

  • Set value when a virtual, analog modem should answers in Server 2012 Routing and Remote Access

    Hi there,
I googled for hours on the following problem:
We have a Routing and Remote Access Server with an Dialogic Diva PRI card (30 lines). The card provides an analog, virtual modem pool. All this runs on Windows Server 2012 (without R2).
My problem is that the client will be connected after 3 or 4 rings on the line (I can not hear properly with our client device), but it should be connected after the first ring.
Under Server 2000 there was the possibility to set the value "NumberOfRings" in the registry and / or  set the modem to ATS0 = 1. Both ways do not work in Server 2012.
Can anyone tell me how it works under 2012?
    Thanks and regards
    Andre

I assume you followed Dialogic's instructions for configuring the device on Windows Server 2012.  It would most likely make more sense to contact Dialogic if you are having issues.  They support the product.  If it is not working according
to their configuration instructions, they are in the best position to be able to answer your questions.

  • Printer server NETGEAR PS121 and Imac

Anybody knows if it's possible to use the printer server "Netgear PS121" with mac?
There is no special software for mac, but it should be possible to use it manually.
I have an Imac 2.4 GHz, router Netgear DG834, the PS121, a Multifunction printer Canon MP160, and I cannot use the printer.
    Thank you.

You will be able to print, but not scan from OS X. And the printing will only work with the open source CUPS driver, Gutenprint (get latest version):
    http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php
To add the printer use IP printing > LPD and for queue name, get the "port name" as instructed in the setup guide - it will look something like PR098701_P1.

  • HELP! Clone server to hardware in remote office?

    Hey all,
For reasons out of my control, I need to clone a server deployment to a second remote-site machine. We have no way of connecting the two sites due to network constraints.
The services we are running are DNS, OD, AFP, Web, and iCal. I have one server configured and need to set up the exact same deployment at our remote on a different machine. I'm operating with a bit of a net in the fact that neither of these are currently scheduled to be production servers.
    My idea is as follows:
    • Clone the drive to start with. Backups are good.
    • Disable services in the following order. iCal, Web, AFP.
    • Backup the LDAP directory and demote to standalone server.
    • Disable DNS.
    • Create an image of the server and transfer to remote site.
    • Restore server to new hardware.
    • Enable DNS and verify IP and DNS name are correct.
    • Promote to OD Master, restore LDAP and enter new Ethernet Address on server in Workgroup Manager
    • Enable AFP, Web and iCal services
I believe this allows me to have the group shares, calendar data, and wiki server data saved on the image but I can go through a more proper enabling of all services after restoring the image to the second machine.
    So, two questions:
*Will this work?* and *Is there a better way to go about it that fits my logistics?*
I know this isn't a preferred method of getting data duplicated between servers. I also have to say that the reason I'm asking this question is because I can perceive no other option. Bummer, yeah?
I've learned a lot since I've been reading here and thank everyone in advance for their help again.
    -b-

Verified all of the above, Group Policies are correct, .Net 3.5 and 4.5 are installed on the client as well as on the serverRunning all the latest updates on both the server and remote desktop ( presume that windows 7 pro (remote) has the correct RDP (7.0
) by default and it is compatible with Windows 2012 r2).  Do not know how to check authority for  printfilterpipelinesvc.exe but the server is only running the standard Windows 2012 R2 with one accounting application(Quickbooks Pro 2014)  nothing
else ! ( no other applications).  The server is in Hyper-V if that makes a difference.
Still getting in the event log of the remote session the following error:

The other thing we tried is we installed a local HP printer to the server,  accessed the remote desktop from one of the local PC and we can print to the local printer via the remote desktop session.  The printer is not redirected but shows that
the print and spool functions are working properly.
I don't know what else to try, any suggestions would be appreaicated.

  • Mac OS X Server Network users and Microsoft Office Documents

Hello. I have a lab with 10.8 clients and 10.7 server. I have problems copying documents to network users' desktops. Here's the scoop:
I'm on my teacher machine. I want to copy word docs (.docx) to the student desktops while they are logged in with ARD. The copy works fine, but when they try to open the documents it is always Read Only. They have to resave the documents as something else in order to use them. Permissions on the documents are read/write for me/staff/everyone on my machine (also a network user account) before I copy them through ARD.
Am I missing something? This issue was around last year when the clients were 10.6 as well.
    Thanks for any help.

    Hi,
I am trying to do the same exact thing and find that it is best to do this locally (for now). Not only is the network way slower, but it seems to make things worse. For example, things backed up via the client machine are routed from the FTP server/volume mount and different permission wise. When you try to restore them locally, it should work, but the folder had different permissions because they were initially created in root (for me). So, I hope they would come out with something better than what is available now. Thanks!

  • Step-by-step to set up vpn on the lion server and then connect a computer running 10.6?

I've recently bought the Lion server. Checking VPN and adding my static IP sounds easy enough.
I then went home to my computer running 10.6, opened the system preferences, added vpn under network.
I guess I have to choose LTP2? What would be the network name? I left it as the filled in "VPN (L2TP)".
As the server address I put my static IP. Account name - is that my user name from the file sharing network
I created in the server software? That's what I used, and added the password for that user account under
Authentification settings, plus the shared secret, I had copied from the server.
Once I apply these settings and try to connect I get the message that the server is not responding and to try to reconnect.
Can anyone fill i the blancs? Obviously I'm missing some stuff inbetween, but canot find answers online.
I guess this is too basic for a forum, but where does one start to learn this stuff??
Do I need to open specific ports on my router connected to the server network? It does say "vpn is enabled" in the
    setup window.
Do I need to create a certificate of some sorts and plce it somewhere?
Do I need tp upgrade my other computer to Lion? I created a "VPN.mobileconfig" file on the server, but when I copy
and open it on a machine running 10.6 it doesn't install anything and just opens up in text edit as a bunch of code.
    Please help!

Same problem here. Just bought the Mac Mini Server with Lion OS X 10.7.2 and created this vpn.mobileconf file. This file seems to do what it supposed to do when I double clicked it while still on the server. Hence copying it over and double clicking it on my MacBook Pro made the texteditor open the file showing the actual contents of it. Trying to import it into my network preference settings wasn't possible either since the file showed grayed out. It seems the operating system on my MacBook Pro (OS X 10.6.8) doesn't recognize it as the correct file type. Entering the settings of the vpn.mobileconf file manually on the Laptop doesn't work either. Time for OS X 10.6.9?

  • L2TP based VPN with OpenS/WAN server, OpenSSL machine certificates

I cannot seem to get OSX to accept the machine certificates for a VPN connection using Internet Connect.
I have generated OpenSSL x509 certificates for the server and client side, the same process has generated certificates that work just dandy with WindowsXP. The certificates have "subjectAltName=" key/value pairs assigned to the IP address of the VPN server.
Once generated I import the certificates into OS X (you have to run KeyChain Access with "sudo" from the console to get this to work). The certificate authority seems to be ok, the CA has been added to the x509Roots, and when I examine the machine certificate for my OS X install using KeyChain Access the certificate is marked valid.
I generated the hash link for the certificate:
    ln -s /etc/racoon/certs/certname.pem /etc/racoon/certs/'openssl x509 -noout -in certname.pem'.0
From the console I run '
    openssl verify certname.pem
It fails unless I specify '-CAPath /etc/racoon/certs', then it passes.
When Internet Connect is setup to use the certificates I can see in the OpenS/WAN logs that the OS X box connects and negotiates IPSEC to MAIN_3. At this point pluto logs the following:
    ignoring informational payload, type INVALIDCERTAUTHORITY
This repeats for several re-tries before the OS X side gives up. No useful logging is generated on the OS X side for me to debug, and everything from the OpenS/WAN side seems to be kosher, it appears to be an oakley/racoon issue with validating the machine certificate provided by OpenS/WAN to the OS X side, with the OS X side unable to verify the certificate.
Has anyone solved this? Any ideas on how to improve the logging output from OS X so I can see what racoon/oakley is carping about in the certificate files it is using?

I'm having the same problem. I've got a machine cert on my Mac OS 10.4.6 client that was issued by my Win2003 CA. When I try and connect, it just hangs and then dies. In the Security Logs on the 2003 L2TP server, I even see a successful IKE negotiation (MS Event ID 541 and 543 below).

  • Creating VPN with OS X Serve 10.4.4 from iMac Intel

    Hi all,
Has anyone else had problems creating a VPN (PPTP) connection with a MacOS X Server (10.4.4)?
Everytime I get the following error in my connection log (in Internet Connect)
    Received bad configure-nak/rej
And after 1 minute the connection closes...
    Xander

I have the same problem when connecting from home on my iMac Core Duo to a PPTP server running on Mac OS X Server 10.3.8 at my office. My iMac connects fine for at least 60 seconds but then within the next 5 seconds I get disconnected. The VPN server has been working fine for months and I can still connect with my iBook running 10.3.9 and my old Power Mac G4 running 10.3.9 worked fine too up until I replaced it with the iMac. All of these machines are using the built-in VPN client configured using Internet Connect.
What types of VPN connections (PPTP, IPSec, etc.) and servers (OS X Server, Cisco, SonicWALL, etc.) are you all trying to connect to and what VPN client are you using?

  • Help!  VPN with Leopard & Leopard server isn't working!

    Hello all,
I have tried (and tried, and tried) to get VPN to work on Leopard server v10.5.1 and I cannot get this to work no matter what I have tried. here is my setup:
    Router:
New Airport Extreme Base station running firmware v7.1.1. I have my server open to the world (for this test)

    2007-11-23 10:41:53 EST --> Client with address = 192.168.4.121 has hungup
I can see that my system is receiving the request for VPN, but my workstation isn't responding it seems. I have had this working under 10.4, but cannot get server 10.5 to work at all.
    Any ideas?
