Setting up with Vonage and Comcast modems

I've tried twice to set up my TC to no avail. I know I'm not doing something right but am unsure what it is. I've read the manuals--I'm a bit challenged in these areas.
My current set up is: Comcast modem to Vonage modem; Vonage modem to Airport extreme, and, to a router for our home which is wired. What I've tried:
Comcast to Vonage to TC / router--the computers could not see TC or only saw it temporarily.
Comcast to TC to Vonage / router--No wireless, no internet, and lost Vonage phone service. Plus, I could not get the TC light to stop flashing amber.
I have enjoyed immensely the simplicity of Apple when setting up the wireless network. But I am stumped. What am I overlooking?
Thanks

Let me check to see if I understand.
Are you referring to Time Capsule as assuming the role of the main router, which is currently a Linksys Etherfast DSL/Cable Router Model BEFSR41? So this router is no longer required?
Here's what I think you are proposing:
1. Comcast modem to WAN port on Time Capsule (replaces Linksys Etherfast)
2. Connect Vonage to LAN port on Time Capsule
3. Connect the second router (10/100 8-Port Workgroup Switch Model EZXS88W) to LAN Port on Time Capsule
4. Put the second router in bridge mode
The Airport Express would be removed in favor of Time Capsule so not sure what wireless preference is being referred to for the second routeer.

Open Mail preferences and select Accounts then MailBox Behavior. You probably need to unclick the safe draft to server.

  • Problem with WRT400N and Comcast

I have a Zoom cable modem and WRT400N modem. When I hook the modem directly to the computer I gain access to the Internet.  The problem is when I try to use the router, the Internet does not work. I can access the router GUI no problem. I have tried all the resets for both modem and router. I even resorted to calling Comcast support. I have never had trouble using a router, but then again, I have never used Comcast. I bet it is something simple, but I can't figure it out. ANy help would be appreciated.

Connect modem to the router's internet port.
Connect the computer [the one online from the modem] to the router's #1 port.
    Access the router's GUI
On Set up TAB, leave internet connection type to DHCP
    Click MAC Address Clone Subtab
       Enable Mac Clone
       Click Clone your pc's mac
       Save
    Then Click Status Tab
If you dont have IP add, click DHCP or IP Renew until you have your IP
or Turn off Modem and Router
    Switch on Modem first
Wait for all the leds to get stable
    Then switch on the Router
If power light is steady, try to access the internet

  • Comcast with vonage and airport basestation

I have a question I am moving in with my friend he has a PC and uses comcast internet and vonage for phone service. My question is I have a powerbook G4 and airport basestation. Is it going to be hard for us to use both a PC and a mac with comcast and vonage? Or is it going to be pretty easy to setup? I was told my one person at comcast I have to buy a router and one person told me the airport basestation is the router. I'm a bit confused.

Your friend is probably already using a router with the Vonage service. If he is using the Linksys WRTP54G you can put your AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) in the closet and save it for later.
Your Mac will be able to connect wirelessly to the WRTP54G. I am using that router and it works great.

  • Trouble with Mac and Cable Modem

Every time I turn on my Mac I have to reboot my modem. I have to unplug every cable and leave for a few minutes before I can hook everything back up. Sometimes I even have to plug my modem into a different cable outlet to reset it. Is this an issue with my internet cable provider or do I need to adjust a setting on my Mac. This is has become very aggravating and any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Ben.

I am having the same issue I think. I have a Motorola hooked up to my Airport Extreme. The last 5 mornings I haven't been able to access the internet. Yesterday I went and checked the lights on the front of the modem and noticed that only the top 2 were lit- the third one blinked. So I reset the modem. Worked fine the rest of the day. This morning I booted up my MBP and same thing. Looked at the lights- the third light is just blinking. Called Comcast and they checked. Said my modem was 'offline' and not connecting. Said that it had gone bad- I suspected so. Not too long ago we had to replace the old Apple router with a new one so I was guessing that the modem was bad and they confirmed it. So I will be shopping for a new one. FYI- reset the modem again this morning after talking to Comcast and it's working fine. Just thought I'd chime in. Judy

  • Setting up Airport Extreme and Comcast

    Hi!
I recently purchased and Airport Extreme for my G4 iBook. I already have Comcast for my regular HP computer. I cannot sucessfully set up the Airport to work with my Mac. I don't have Apple care and my husband uses windows and has not been able to do it either. I have heard that the it's difficult to hook up the Airport w/Comcast...is this true? I called comcast and they said they didn't know how to do it...I would have to call Apple.
Anyone out there that can offer a step by step on how to get this working? Or does anyone know if I can hire someone to come my house to hook it up? I'm getting a little frustrated. Thanks for any advice!

  • Setting up the extreme and DSL modem

    Hi guys,
just bought and upgraded to the new extreme base station and hooked up to the DSL modem, but couldn't get them to work.
Before, I had the 1st generation airport base station (snow) hooked up to the router and the router to the DSL modem. And now i just want to connect the new extreme base station to the SDL modem (SBC Yahoo)and no router involved. What changes do I have to make? PPoe or DHCP it seems that the extreme base cannnot establish coonection with the modem.
I've tried setting ppoe under system preference, put in my account name and password but it doesn't receive any IP address. Next to the airport signal on top of the screen, it shows a message" negotiate ppoe"
Anyway, I would appreciate if anyone canould point me the right direction before I call apple.
    thanks!

What changes do I have to make? PPoe or DHCP...
What settings does your ISP use? What settings did you use on the router you were previously using? Those are the settings you need for the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS).
I've tried setting ppoe under system preference...
If your ISP requires PPPoE you should enable it on the AEBS but disable it on all of your computers.

When I try and send a fax I get the message "preparing to fax" and that is it. The process stall there. Is there any advice on how I could get this to work other than using a fax service like efax.

    Atom2,
Have a look at this article for instructions on sending a fax. I have Comcast digital service also, but I've never tried to send a fax. You may have to check with Comcast to see if additional steps are necessary.

  • WRT54g2 and comcast modem, internet dropouts, losing my mind.

Title of the post sums it up. I've literally spent hours and hours on the phone with linksys tech support. I've replaced the modem once and the problem is identical.
Basically, I get everything setup and it works fine for a period of time, usually a few days. Then, internet gets really slow before it stops working altogether.
When I lose internet connection however my home network is still functioning. My computers still talk to each other and I can usually still stream content to my PS3. Even my utorrent downloads will continue seeding and downloading.
When it internet stops working I power cycle the router and it works again. But every time I do that the period of time that it functions properly gets shorter and shorter, to the point where I will power cycle it and within 5 minutes I lose internet.
Firmware is up to date, 1.5.01. Wireless network is secured. I do not experience any dropouts when the either computer is wired directly to the modem.
I have a W7 laptop on wireless, wired W7 desktop, and a wireless PS3 on the network. And recently I began sharing my wireless with my neighbor. But I've had issues long before that.
After some research, I came across this thread.
    http://homecommunity.cisco.com/t5/Wireless-Routers/I-need-to-reconfigure-my-WRT54G2-to-work-with-Com...
Basically setting the the router ip to 192.168.2.1 instead of 1.1 and enabling mac address clone.
This actually helped and I thought my internet woes were over. But at the time I was in between desktop PCs (building one to replace my old Dell).
After a couple days of my new desktop on the network my old problems began again. Could utorrent be causing any issue because I notice it seems to get worse when my desktop is downloading, or maybe not it just seems that way.
There have been times where the computer gave an ip address conflict message. I've tried static ip but have not been able to get that to work probably due to something I've been missing in the process. I'd prefer not to have to resort to static ip because I take my laptop to work and for travel and would prefer not to have be going back and forth on my settings. And I would like guests to be able to come over with their laptop and just quickly log on and not have to change their ip.
So I'm at a loss, not sure what else to try. This is also the 2nd brand of modem I tried, the first was a dlink that I just returned right away because I thought it was faulty.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks.

MTU is the Maximum Transmission Unit. It specifies the largest packet size permitted for Internet transmission. Keep the default setting, Auto, to have the Router select the best MTU for your Internet connection. To specify a MTU size, select Manual, and enter the value desired (default is 1400).  You should leave this value in the 1200 to 1500 range.
The default value is 100. Enter a value between 1 and 65,535 milliseconds. The Beacon Interval value indicates the frequency interval of the beacon. A beacon is a packet broadcast by the Router to synchronize the wireless network.
This value should remain at its default setting of 2347. The range is 0-2347 bytes.
<script type="text/javascript">// Capture(hwireless.phase11) // </script> Should you encounter inconsistent data flow, only minor modifications are recommended. If a network packet is smaller than the preset RTS threshold size, the RTS/CTS mechanism will not be enabled. The Router sends Request to Send (RTS) frames to a particular receiving station and negotiates the sending of a data frame. After receiving an RTS, the wireless station responds with a Clear to Send (CTS) frame to acknowledge the right to begin transmission.
This value should remain at its default setting of 2346. The range is 256-2346 bytes. It specifies the maximum size for a packet before data is fragmented into multiple packets. If you experience a high packet error rate, you may slightly increase the Fragmentation Threshold. Setting the Fragmentation Threshold too low may result in poor network performance. Only minor modifications of this value are recommended.

    element,
As what skynet suggest, you could get the Creative DDTS-100 decoder. From what you described, the decoder will be the best option around. You can check them out at

  • What's the best set up with AppleTV and Mac Mini with 2TB external HD?

    Hi
I have an Apple TV and 2TB external HD connected to my Mac Mini.
I want to stream through my Mac Mini and I want all my media stored in my external HD.
What's the best setting so that I sync only one way to my external HD the contents of my Apple TV? I don't want anything except unwatched media on my Apple TV.
I'm fairly new to Mac world and Apple TV, as far as I read iTunes and Apple TV sync both ways, how do I achieve a one way sync to my Mac Mini with external HD?
    Many thanks

Ok that makes it clear, sorry I used wrong terminology,it should have been transfer rather than sync.
You don't want to stop transfers of purchased content. See This User Tip
While on the subject a friend of mine told me that the streaming videos doesn't work well,it kinda freezes and stops but the music stream is fine. Is that true or his set up is wrong?
It's not necessarily his configuration set up that's wrong, it's probably that he has a poor network by virtue of too great a distance or interference from other networks or other household equipment.

  • Airport capsule and Comcast modem

I just bought the airport and time capsule and have it installed and working perfectly.  Now Comcast sent me a new modem to "take advantage of all Xfinity has to offer."  Should I install that modem or not.  Does the Airport have it own modem and router?  That was my understanding.

The apple routers do not have a modem.. you must use a modem.. either supplied by your ISP or purchased by you.. and unfortunately this is almost never successful unless you reset the apple router back to factory settings and start over.
If you want the higher speed you will probably need to install the new modem.. then the fun begins.. is it a pure modem or also a router?? There should be just one router in the network.. but if the supplied modem is also a router it is better to bridge the TC.

  • Set Screensaver with ARD and activate it.

So, i have a great April 1st prank for the agency.
I used ARD to install the Broken Display Screensaver to everyone here, but I want to use a Unix Command to set the screensaver and activate it...
Everyone here is on 10.5 or 10.6
Is it easy to just use ARD to send a command to the current user that sets their screensaver and activates it?
It's a good harmless IT prank that stops as soon as they move the mouse, but freaks them out for a couple seconds..
    Thanks!

  • MacBookPro with Tiger and USR Modem Update

                    Good Day,
The latest news on this issue is that I now have internet connection via the USR-5637.  The last hangup before loading all my files is that I cannot send mail: I can receive, but not send.  I talked to ATTglobal-Help and they confirmed the Modem is connecting to their servers and the Apple-Mail settings are correct (I tried Outlook too).  Their last comment  was for me to find an Apple Store and talk to the Genius’.  If anyone has had a similar experience and solved it, advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
