Setting version name when relocating masters

During the initial phase of moving to Aperture, I have changed my image library structure a bit as I learn how to manage it.
I made one more change and went to relocate the masters, which worked great except for one thing: it relocated the masters, but did not update the version names to reflect the new location.
I like my version name base and file name to be the same, at least to start out.
Is there any way from the relocate operation to do this?
Or do I have to export and re-import to get version names reset?

  • Set version name from IPTC Title field?

I'm no AppleScript genius but I am sure there shouldn't be a whole lot of lines of code needed for me to grab a selection of images and change their version name to whatever the IPTC title field is.
basically right now the version names are messed up due to tampering but the IPTC metadata is fine, so i want the metadata to prevail over whatever aperture has as name & keywords.
Anyone got an idea of how to do this simply and quickly? I know I have a batch file renaming utility but I don't think that will help me in this case as aperture doesn't 'care' about file name does it?
This is on Aperture 3.5 (latest version)

Lightroom stores metadata in its own database, located:
    [Username]/Pictures/Lightroom/Lightroom Database.lrdb (Mac OS) file.
    [Username]/My Documents/My Pictures/Lightroom/Lightroom Database.lrdb (Windows) file.
This is different to CS5/Bridge where XMP sidecars contain the metadata for proprietary raw files and in others (DNG, Tiff, jpeg, PSD) it's contained in the XMP headroom within the image file.

hello i am using JTable constructer as

can i set column names for the columns .How?

    hi,
sure you can: Create a subclass of DefaultTableModel and overwrite the method public String getColumnName(int) which returns the column name of a specific column. Then use this subclass as the data model for the table.

  • HELP! Aperture corrupting my library when relocating masters

I keep my aperture library on my system disk, and I use referenced masters on a NAS.  Everything seems to have been working fine until now.  I had a rather large project that I was cleaning up, wanting to delete my no longer needed masters (about 2200 out of 3500 files).  Unfortunately, I forgot to check the box to delete referenced masters - I didn't even realize it was there until I went searching when it didn't delete them.  Anyway, what I thought I would do is simply relocate the masters from by project to a new project, then I could delete the masters left behind.
What happened was that Aperture started moving masters from other projects into the new project - Files that were not selected in Aperture when I executed the relocate masters command.  Now these other projects have lots of images with "unsupported image format", I'm assuming for the masters that got moved into this new project.  What happened?

I've attempted to fix this by restoring the JPEG files that I had originally "removed".  This did not seem to  resolve the problem as when exporting the masters I still find many, many files from other projects being exported as part of this project.
Granted, I brought this problem on myself by deleting the JPEGs, however this seems like a pretty serious defect in Aperture.  I could understand if after deleting a JPEG Aperture could not locate the JPEG master and displayed some sort of indicator of such.  However there is no indication that anything is wrong, it's just picking up random files in place of the JPEGs, and in those other projects, the images are "unsupported file format" with the filename showing some sort of metadata in an iPhoto library on the same disk.
I have a vault that probably has the database from these other projects intact.  Is there a way to restore that information?  (remember that all the masters are relocated).
Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer to help fix this.

  • Import iPhoto Title as Aperture Version Name?

QUESTION: How do you import your iPhoto library such that the Titles you've applied in iPhoto become the Version Names in Aperture?
DETAILS: Upon import, Aperture ignores my custom iPhoto Titles ("Lunch at Summit", for example) and replaces them with the original file name (DSCF2966, for example). I hate looking at a screen full of DSCxxxxx names. Worse, I've spent a lot of time titling my pictures in iPhoto. I don't want to lose that work.
BACKGROUND: In iPhoto, I typically Batch Change a just-imported set of photos, setting the Title to nothing. Then I give meaningful names to pictures that I care about titling. This way, I reduce visual clutter on the photo display; any title text I see is there because I typed it in. When I try this trick in Aperture, it displays "<untitled>" for any pictures I remove the camera's DSCxxxxx from.
QUESTION 2: Is it a bad idea to get rid of the camera DSCxxxx Version Names?
I've experimented with the Import settings, searched these forums, the web, and the Aperture help files, to no avail.
    Thanks!
    David Long

Kirby, thanks for your helpful response. I just experimented with the Version Name field in the iPhoto import dialog and found that setting Version Name to Version Name in the
    File-->Import-->iPhoto Library...
import dialog still does not preserve the Titles from iPhoto.
    However, using
    File-->Import-->Show iPhoto Browser...
DOES preserve the iPhoto Titles. Unfortunately, this method loses much of the Places information in the iPhoto library. I describe which Places info gets lost in this forum post:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11229662#11229662
So, this leaves us with a conundrum:
-If we use the "Show iPhoto Browser..." method to import, we retain our Titles but lose our Faces and Places data.
-If we use the "Import-->iPhoto Library..." method, we retain [most of] our Places and Faces data, but completely lose our Titles from iPhoto.
Either way, we lose some of the metadata work we put into our iPhoto library.
Anybody know a solution to this problem?

  • Version names ignored when relocating a library

I've run into some odd behavior when trying to relocate a library (to a set of folders on disk, rather than the managed library location) using the "Relocate Originals for Library" feature.  I'm hoping maybe somebody here has seen this and can either let me know if I'm doing something wrong, or perhaps if this does in fact look like a bug in Aperture.
The relocation dialog provides a variety of options for automatically creating a folder structure (which works brilliantly) as well as naming the relocated original images.  The issue I'm seeing is that when I tell Aperture to use "version names" as the naming method for the files, *some* of the relocated images ignore their version name and show up with their original file names.  I have pored over the images and cannot figure out what the difference is between the images that would cause some to seemingly randomly ignore their file names.  This happens even within a set of images shot with the same camera within minutes of each other, with similar adjustments applied.  All are RAW images, but I'm not sure if that matters.  But some are correctly named as their version name, and some have the original filename out of the camera.
    Any ideas?

But some are correctly named as their version name, and some have the original filename out of the camera.
I am seeing this happen, when two or more selected images have the same version names. Then the second  relocated image will be relocated with the original filename to avoid overwriting originals by a different file with the same name. Do you have image versions with the same name? Perhaps due to batch renaming them?

  • Good evening. When I try to rename a master file or export a master file, it only allows 9 spaces for my new name, even though Aperature 3 allows many more spaces than that for version names. This creates a lot of problems and headaches for me.

Good evening. When I try to rename a master file or export a master file, Aperature 3 only recognizes the first 9 spaces for raw .NEF files, even though it easily uses twice that many spaces for version names. I have a system in place that works really well for me, wherein by changing the file name I can recognize what's important to me just by glancing at the file name, no matter what system it is in, I do not have to open or mouse over anything to know what the file is. My files also arrange themselves in order no matter what file system they are in. Can someone please tell me if there is a setting, or something I am doing wrong, that prevents me from using a longer Master file name. I can't be the only person who would like to have his Master File names correspond to the name that appears in the Aperature library, and would like to use at least 16 spaces (numbers, letters, etc.)
    Thanks,
    Photo Al

    Hi Frank,
As you suggested, I am attaching several screen shots. In the first one you can see how I set up my preset. I used "Custom Name" and "Counter" with a dot between the two drag ins, followed by "D90". I also have a dot to seperate the 8 digits in the Custom Name and make it easier to read.
I then click "OK" which takes us to the second screen shot. Here you can see that in the Example File Name everything looks perfect, and you can see I have clicked on "Apply to Master Files".
In the third screen shot you can see that the version in my library did in fact change correctly. With the "mouse over" pop up screen you can see, however, that the Master File name was changed  to "1933.1017.NEF". It failed to carry the "12D90" and if I go to where my masters are stored that is exactly what the name was changed to.
In the fourth screen shot I attempt to export the master. You can see how my "Version Name" is set up.
And finally on the 5th screen shot you see in the File Name Example the name "1933.1017.NEF" once again, which when I export the master is exactly how the name will appear. Since I will export more than one file at a time , a (1) and  a (2)  etc., will appear at the end of the names because all the files are being given the same "1933.1017.NEF" name.
I hope this reply does a better job of clarifying my problem. I am anxious to see if this is something I simply misunderstood, or if I am simply doing something wrong.
    Thanks,

For example, if I have 4 word documents open, and go to mission control so they are all displayed, can I turn a feature on that displays the document name when my mouse is over each document?
Like in the picture, if I have my mouse over a document, the name of the document isn't displayed.  Can I change this?

    Hey!
I just got a new mac and was trying to figure out the same thing today!! I went from an older version to this 10.9.  I called apple support, the tech had no idea what I was talking about.  I was transferred to a manager who told me that it is not feature available on the new models.  After a 40 minute conversation I was about to let it go and then I saw this post and became determined LOL ... and I figured it out (SMH apple support).  So here is how you do you it:

I am not able to upload a 2 photos so I will post a second screenshot of what it looks like once the preferences are set.

  • File name issues with Relocated Masters

I am relocating Master Images from my Managed Aperture Library on my internal disk to a Referenced Library on an external hard drive. Everything in my efforts has run smoothly, except the names of the files that are showing up in my referenced folders on the external drive.
I am setting a folder hierarchy, and this is working fine. For the file names, I am choosing the Version Name. This is where I am having a problem. Only some of the images are relocating with the Version Name. The others are relocating with the Master File Name instead.
Why won't my images transfer over with the names that I am instructing Aperture to transfer them as?

How are you connecting to the server? Using Windows file sharing with an "smb" connection? Or does the server have file services for Macintosh enabled so you're connecting with an "afp" address? Do you see these file names in the Finder? Or are you seeing it the open/save dialog boxes in your Adobe programs?
We have lots of Macs at the office (most have 10.4.x but we're moving to 10.5.x) and we share Adobe files from Windows 2003 servers without a problem seeing the correct file names. So, I don't think you should have a problem like that.

Can someone tell me how to set my name so when I send a text it shows up instead of my phone number

You can't do that. Only the sending number is transmitted by the carrier with an SMS message. If the recipient has you in their address book, with most smart phones and some others, the name will display, but that's a function of the phone on the receiving end.

  • Set the name of cell or cells' range for a report and when export it to excel the names will be defined.

    Hello,
I have an C# application that exports report from Reporting Services to Excel files.
I would like to know if there is a possibility to set the name of the cell or range of cells in the report (via Report Builder or somewhere else) and when open the Excel the names are set. Similar functinality when you open the Excel and go Formulas/Define
Name and set the name for a unique cell or range.
    Regards,

    Hi there,
I don't believe this is possible in Reporting Services.  One workaround, if you don't know the exact range at runtime, might be to put hidden characters (white?) in your sheet at start and end of range, then do some postprocessing on the file using
VSTO or perhaps a 3rd-party tool like this one.
    http://www.aspose.com/reporting-services/excel-component.aspx
If you do know the range it should be much easier.
    cheers,

  • Cannot select name when creating new DC

    Hi all,
It seems I encounter this kind of problems over and over again when dealing with NWDI )-:
In this thread Cannot select vendor when creating new DC I couldn't select vendor.
I installed a new NWDI system (version is 7.18), did all the post installation steps including the configuration of a name server on the SLD but I cannot select "name" and the vendor I entered is not shown (even if enter it manually I cannot select name so it doesn't help - see snapshot).
    [snapshot|http://img134.imageshack.us/i/nwdi.jpg/]
    Snapshot: http://img134.imageshack.us/i/nwdi.jpg/
I did name server config on : http://server:port/dtr/system-tools/administration/NameServerConfiguration
Name prefixes are defined under 'Name Reservation -> Development Component Name' - I used <x.y>/* and <x.y>/tst (x.y is namespace like com.omri).
I updated CMS after setting the name server, restart J2EE and did all kind of voodoo without success.
I use local SLD which is part of the J2EE.
I don't get any error messages (from NWDI/SLD/NWDS).
I don't remember this kind of problem with NWDI on 6.40 versions.
Moreover I installed and configured several systems on 7.12 & 7.13 versions without any problems but with 7.14 & 7.18 I've problem with setting the name server...
    Please help,
    Thanks,
    Omri

Solved it on my own by deleting and creating the track again (with the same settings!!!)
