Settings change on email without my doing anything...can't send

I have been using Mac mail for about six months. A couple of days ago I suddenly was unable to send emails. i did not change any settings in Preferences, and checked with my company regarding outgoing server settings, and nothing changed. This happened one time before and I was still under contract for support...the guy helped me fix it but I can't recreate what he did. Two questions: 1) is anyone else finding that the settings in their Account Preferences change for no reason? 2) and is there a fix for this? I have re-entered all server data over and over but will not work. Friends tell me I should give up and use Thunderbird but have so much data in Mac system. Hate to do that...but worry this will keep happening!

I "feel your pain", having had this issue on average every 3 months or so. Sometimes it will spontaneously fix itself. I tried deleting the Home/Library/Mail/Mailboxes Outbox.mbox folder followed by closing and reopening Mail which worked for a very brief time only, then became an issue once more. I have 2 accounts in gmail.com which are the current outgoing server issues. One of them works and the other doesn't. Now when I create a new note there are 2 text boxes in the from area of the note all of a sudden.
This is a real problem because if I send mail using the other server, my business accounts will not recognize the incorrect server now being used by Mail to send all my outgoing as the address is not the one associated with my accounts.

    I run an iMac. Today for some reason when I run the cursor across the screen applications and files are highlighted and then opened without me doing anything (no clicking etc) In fact print at times opens. As far as I can tell I have not changed any settings except to open firewall.
    I run MacKeeper and when I run a scan only a few cleaning items open. Safe and fast are as they should be. I run fix. If I again run the scan I get a few more but different claeing items to fix.
    I have rung MacKeeper several times without getting through. The occasion I did get through the bloke said he could not help and passed me to a higher authority. Needless to say the line dropped out after 30 minutes waiting.
    As it is the weekend and I do not live near an Apple store I am quite keen to get the problem identified and fixed so I can continue working.

    Remove the "MacKeeper" scam product as follows. First, back up all data.
    "MacKeeper" has only one useful feature: it deletes itself.
    Note: These instructions apply to the version of the product that I downloaded and tested in early 2012. I can't be sure that they apply to other versions.
    IMPORTANT: "MacKeeper" has what the developer calls an “encryption” feature. In my tests, I didn't try to verify what this feature really does. If you used it to “encrypt” any of your files, “decrypt” them before you uninstall, or (preferably) restore the files from backups made before they were “encrypted.” As the developer is not trustworthy, you should assume that the "decrypted" files are corrupt unless proven otherwise.
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Applications
    from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-A. The "MacKeeper" application is in the folder that opens. Quit it if it's running, then drag it to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your login password. Click the Uninstall MacKeeper button in the dialog that appears. All the functional components of the software will be deleted. Reboot.
    ☞ Quit MacKeeper before dragging it to the Trash.
    ☞ Don't empty the Trash. Let MacKeeper delete itself.
    ☞ Don't try to drag the MacKeeper Dock icon to the Trash.

    If you're not fluent in syncing and restoring I'd stop by the Apple Store and let them have a look at it. Just an idea, if you haven't turned off the noise cancellation turn that off,  might as well make sure.

    My HP Officejet Pro 8600 has dialed 911 twice in the past 6 months without me doing anything other than leaving it plugged into the phone line for faxes. What might be causing this? I did not even use the machine for faxes during that time and the police have knocked on my door stating they received a 911 call from my phone number which is only being used for this fax machine.

    This is very unusual. Have you printed out a fax confirmation report to verify that the call was indeed made from the fax machine? Is it possible that a speed dial was setup and accidentially initiated? 
    You can reset the fax machine to factory defaults which will erase any stored information by touching Settings - Tools - Restore Factory Defaults

    If it is jailbroken, we are not allowed to help you with that here.  You'll need to seek out other sources of help.  The jailbreaking could potentially be part of the problem, for all I know.
    BTW, just a pointer...  punctuation is your friend!  Your post was very difficult to read without any.  Many people will simply stop reading and click the "back" button when encountering something like that, which limits availability of help to you.

    Sounds like the Time Machine Local Backup.  Try turning Time Machine Off in System Preferences to verify.

    But, your real problem is
    I forgot to mention that I tried to use Disk Utility to Verify Disk, but it cannot. I get red errors that say the MacHD is corrupt and needs to be repaired. It says that in order to do this I need to use the Disk Utility on the install disk, but Lion doesn't have one!
    Boot into Lion's Recovery (Hold ⌘R on Boot), select Disk Utility and then select Macintosh HD and click [Repair Disk]

    You won't be able to change your rescue email address until you can answer your questions, if you don't have access to your current rescue account then you will need to contact Support in your country to get the questions reset.

    in the iPhoto preferences ==> accounts delete your e-mail account and reenter it
    OR
    IMHO the better solution is to set Apple mail as the email client in the iPhoto preferences

    Did you check the outgoing mail server setting? Make sure that your username and password are in there.
    Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Your email account>Account>Outgoing mail server - tap the server name next to SMTP and check in the primary server and make sure your username and password are entered and correct - even if it says that the password is optional.
