Settings for .aiff to .ac3 conversion

I just need to reduce the bit rate of mastered .aiff stereo files. My sound engineer will kill me if the DVDs don't sound as good as the mastered files. This is a 9 DVD project with more than 300 audio/video tracks.
What settings do I need to use with compressor for the audio?

The whole point of AIFF is that it is an uncompressed format.
ac3 sounds very good considering it's relative file size. Your sound engineer should realize that in order to fit the audio onto the disc, some compromizing will probably have to happen.
Bear in mind that the majority of viewers will use the built in audio system on their TV with its tiny speakers that are by no means anywhere near hifi quality.

Saving Settings for use with Export using Quicktime Conversion

Dear All,
Is it possible to save a set of settings for use with the Export using Quicktime Conversion feature? The reason I ask is that we have to export a quicktime of every tv commercial we make (using the same settings) and it would be great if "one click" could deliver the export settings we need.

Well, you can create a droplet from Compressor that would do what you'd like...
Open compressor and in the Help menu, Select the user manual. Navigate to page 315.

How do I set the conversion settings for Word to ignore outline autonumbering for headings?

I have a user manual in Word that uses outline autonumbering for Heading 1, Heading 2, etc. For example, "1.0 Introduction," "1.1 System Settings" and so on).
I know when setting the conversion settings for FrameMaker, you can select the Ignore Autonumber option in the Conversion Settings dialog to keep only the paragraph content. I don't see anything like this for the Word Conversion Settings. Does this capability exist?

To clarify:
I have my paragraphs in Word set up with the required numbering properties using Word's Style settings. In Word, I want the headings to be numbered 1.0, 1.1, 1.1.1, etc. because the intent is for the reader to read through the manual like a book - from start to finish.
I'm single-sourcing my manual from Word into RoboHelp to generate an online help package. However, I do not want my RoboHelp headings to be numbered because the user may or may not read each topic in order (in other words, they may only need to read what's in section 3.2, but won't get there by reading sections 1.0 through 3.1 first). I might also clarify that each heading is its own topic - so Section 3.2 would be a separate topic from 3.0 and 3.1.
So for example, in Word, it reads like this:
     "1.0 Introduction
     [content goes here]
     1.1 System Requirements
     [content goes here]
     1.2 References
     [content goes here]"
And in RoboHelp, I want it like this
     "Introduction
     [content goes here]"

So how do I keep the numbering in my Word document, but set up the Conversion Settings in RoboHelp to ignore those numbers and only include the text following the autonumber? I have been able to do this when single-sourcing a FrameMaker book into RoboHelp.

Best Quicktime Conversion Settings for YouTube Posting

Hey there,
I'm using Final Cut HD with a Powermac G5 and osx 10.4.
I'm outputting a couple of sequences for youtube (not of my own volition!) - is there someone who can let me know what they think are the best output settings for posting to Youtube? The video is NTSC with soundtrack, and it should stream down regular dsl/cable.
Youtube says on the website to upload mpeg4 video as a recommended format, but in the menu system for FCPHD there is mpeg4 as a file format and as a video format? Which do they mean?
Any advice from youtube posters would be much appreciated, I know this is a generla question but I don't have that much time to research all the options in detail!

No settings for Apple Lossless Audio Codec found in Compressor

For archiving reasons I have to convert many audio files to Apple Lossless (ALAC). So I thought it would be easy using Compressor 4 and and a suitable droplet. I was astonished that here are only settings for the following audio formats: AAC, AC3, AIFF, CAF, MP3 and WAV.
No Apple Lossless Codec in the settings?
Does anyone know how to create ALAC files

There is no "ALAC" file format specification. What are you going to use the files for?
ALAC isn't specified at all. The audio codec is called "Apple Lossless", and it is a set of algorithms to encode audio data, and a specification for a bitstream of audio data encoded such. It can be put in various containers, the most common being MPEG-4 and Apple Quicktime, but nothing will stop you from using AVI, .mkv, .ogg or anything else as the container format.
If you're unhappy with Compressor, which only seems to offer the QuickTime container format for Apple Lossless-encoded audio, there might be other tools that will transfer it into another container while leaving the actual encoded data untouched.
Since the Apple Lossless codec is now free, mencoder might work, even for the encoding itself. I haven't checked MPEG Streamclip, Handbrake, VLC or others, which might also offer such options.
Quick tests didn't yield any success, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't work.
An alternative for lessless encoding is the "FLAC" (free lossless audio codec), which is usually stored in an ogg container file. I don't think Compressor offers that, although VLC does.
It seems that the exact thing you want is not readily available (i. e. mpeg-4 audio-only with Apple Lossless audio codec.)

Hi,
You will not get a production order out of MD50. That would have to be set up in the SD customizing for the sales order item, but I am not sure that would work with your two-plant setup.
After MD50 you need to run CO41 for the collective conversion (and I also recommend the mentioned production scheduling profile customizing and then maintain this profile in the material master work scheduling view)

PDF Output Settings for Word Email Merge?

Hi all,
I'm using Acrobat X's integration in Word to do an email merge of PDFs. There are images in my template that need their quality maintained. So far, I've been unable to find a setting that affects the "Merge to Adobe PDF" script.
I've created a new PDFMaker Settings > Conversion Setting that uses all the highest image-preserving settings I've found to change from my research. This includes turning off downsampling and compression. When I simply print to PDF or Save As PDF, the image comes out perfectly. When I Mail Merge to PDF, the image quality is lost again.
Where can I adjust the settings for the script that merges to PDF to preserve the image quality?

Found a workaround, but it does not answer my original question.
My images were in PNG format (which I had intended to use for its transparency). PNGs appear to not handle well in the PDF mail merge. Testing with JPGs, I found they retained much more quality, so I ended up using my Snipping Tool to save the images (with the background seen through the transparent parts) as a JPG, then swapped those images into the document.
Very sloppy workaround, but it got the job done!

What target settings for LCD monitor calibration?

I have recently installed Spectraview II to calibrate my NEC LCD 2180WG monitor but have some doubts on which target settings to use as there are different opinions on color temp, gamma and intensity choices.
I use my system purely for photo post-processing and printing on color calibrated printers. I use AdobeRGB color space and have no interest for processing images for web.
- What color temp do you use/recommend? D50, D65 or something in between? I see that some folks use D65 and others swear by D50.
- What about Gamma choice 1.8, 2.2 or L* ? Same here, no common choice here too.
- Lastly what about intensity (brightness in terms of cd/mm2)?
NEC recommends Target Settings for Printing, which are D50, 1.8 gamma and Max. Intensity, but I'm not sure.
I'd appreciate if you could recommend correct settings for my type of work.

I arrived at 5100K by measuring a few of my favorite printing papers with my spectrophotometer. This was a good compromise (most measured between about 4800K and 5300K). I confirmed the results by trying various calibrations them comparing the monitor to prints (using custom printer profiles). Anywhere near 5000K looked great, but 5100K was the best match of the bunch. I used 5000K lighting for viewing (Solux and Philips light sources).
Luminance settings were done in a similar fashion. First I compared a ppure white Photoshop document (on the monitor) to the intensity of a sheet of white printing paper displayed under my viewing light. With the monitor luminance set to the 85 cd/m2 range, the two documents look about the same brightness of white. I try to view my prints under "moderate" light levels rahter than ultra bright levels, since I know they won't be lit by spot or flood lights when placed on a wall. If you do have spots on your hung prints, there is a case to use a higher luminance level on your monitor. Anyway, on many LCDs, if you set the luminance too high, your blacks can start to look a little washed out. When set to about 85 cd, my tonal range in the print is a great match to my monitor. If I have the monitor luminance set to 100 or higher, I find that my prints look dark and muddy in comparison (unless viewed under unrealistically bright lights). So, a lot of trial and error, plus some initial brightness comparisons.
Gamma is a tougher one. I have a special viewing target that I bring up in Photoshop (Lab based to prevent any possible conversions). When viewed in Photoshop at full magnification, it helps me to set the gamma, which affects mostly the midtone density. On my LCD, I found )again by trial and error) that 2.0 gave me the best tonal distribution. My old CRT worked best at 1.8 gamma, and other LCDs sometimes work best at other gamma settings, such as 2.2.
The above settings work beautifully given my equipment, my viewing levels, ambient working conditions, etc. My monitor to print match is excellent from both a color and tonal range standpoint. Hope that helps clarify my thinking and approach.

I have some files I am working with. Details and what happened:
Had some music files where I was doing some trimming/splitting. Files worked fine in itunes.
Open the files in Quicktime Pro 7 to trim them. Exported to aif.
Opened the files with itunes. They open and play just fine.
In Itunes I click"create AAC version" to convert them.
I receive the message "An error occurred while trying to import the file. The current encoder settings for bit rate and sample rate are not valid for this file."
I don't know what to do from here. Suggestions?

Make sure that the AIFFs that you export are set for 16 bit PCM.
Also, assuming that you are using 44.1 kHZ sampling in your AIFFs, make sure that you are not trying to use 48 kHz in the AAC.

No custom settings for AAC?

I am unable to change the custom settings when using AAC encoder.
I'm fairly sure that there used to be an option to change the bit rate and VBR under the Custom setting (and the Apple website describes this), but now when I select custom it just shows 256kb and does not give any options for custom settings.
A small thing ... there used to be a little line between Spoken Podcast and Custom. That little line is not there anymore.
There are still custom settings for MP3 and AIFF and WAV.
Any ideas how to fix this?

Aiff or .AC3 on DVD disc?

Hi, I am finishing my band's DVD and I have the final mix in 2 formats. 1 is stereo aiff and the other is a 5.1 .ac3.
My question is, is there any advantage to me converting my stereo file to a 2.0 channel .ac3? Will it play back better in more players because of the lower bit rate required for the stereo .ac3?
It fits on the disk either way and the .aiff sounds good to me so I am inclined to keep it but I would encode it if there are any good reasons to.

Just to get the thread back on topic, you can use either AC3 or PCM audio on a DVD, and both should be able to be played back in players around the world (with older PAL systems more likely to struggle with AC3)
AC3 allows for a lower bandwidth, as you point out, and this is only important in two situations. Firstly, if you have a lot of video to fit onto a disc it is wise to reduce the audio file size for the relatively tiny loss of quality (I'd bet most people wouldn't hear it on a standard player set up) because audio is easier to compress and get right than video. Secondly, if you are burning a disc yourself rather than going to replication.
When you burn a disc you are not creating a true DVD-Video disc, but a DVD-R (or +R). These have different compatibility in players, and since they use an entirely different technology for the reflective layer (it is a vegetable based dye rather than aluminium film) you get different responses from set top boxes.
The DVD specification allows for a total bandwidth of 10.08Mbps on a DVD. However, up to 9.8Mbps of this can be used for video, leaving not much for audio. You can, of course, use more for audio and less for video if you wish.
There is a bit of a 'gotcha' though. With a DVD-R or DVD+R you would be very unwise to use these high bandwidths. In fact, since the reflectivity of the surface is so much less you need to reduce the bandwidth. Anecdotal tests from authors all around the world have revealed a reasonable upper limit of around 7.4Mbps produces the most compatible discs in the widest range of players. Going higher introduces an ever diminishing return, in that you gain file size with no appreciable improvement in quality, and you increase the chances of your disc 'choking' the player as it struggles to get the data off at the higher rates.
My advice would be to reduce the audio to AC3 wherever you can, but try it and listen to the result to see if it is acceptable. If you can't tell much of a difference, and you are well attuned to how it should sound, then it's very unlikely anyone else will notice.
So - got lots of room on the disc? Want to have the better sound and the widest compatibility? Use PCM... but remember the upper limits for the bandwidth if burning it yourself.
Got lots of video? Can't hear the difference between the two audio types really anyway? Reduce the file size of the audio by creating AC3 files, and encode the video to get a better visual quality.

Data Creation in Idoc
IDocs are text encoded documents with a rigid structure that are used to exchange data between R/3 and a foreign system. Instead of calling a program in the destination system directly, the data is first packed into an IDoc and then sent to the receiving system, where it is analyzed and properly processed. Therefore an IDoc data exchange is always an
asynchronous process. The significant difference between simple RFC-calls and IDoc data exchange is the fact, that every action performed on IDocs are protocolled by R/3 and IDocs can be reprocessed if an error occurred in one of the message steps.
While IDocs have to be understood as a data exchange protocol, EDI and ALE are typical use cases for IDocs. R/3 uses IDocs for both EDI and ALE to deliver data to the receiving system. ALE is basically the scheduling mechanism that defines when and between which partners and what kind of data will be exchanged on a regular or event triggered basis. Such a set-up is called an ALE-scenario.

1.IDOCs are stored in the database. In the SAP system, IDOCs are stored in database tables.
2.IDOCs are independent of the sending and receiving systems.
3.IDOCs are independent of the direction of data exchange.
The two available process for IDOCs are
Outbound Process
Inbound Process
AND There are basically two types of IDOCs.
Basic IDOCs
Basic IDOC type defines the structure and format of the business document that is to be exchanged between two systems.
Extended IDOCs
Extending the functionality by adding more segments to existing Basic IDOCs.
To Create Idoc we need to follow these steps:
Create Segment ( WE31)
Create Idoc Type ( WE30)
Create Message Type ( WE81)
Assign Idoc Type to Message Type ( WE82)

WE30 - you can create a IDOC type.
An IDOC with data, will have to be triggered by the application that is trying to send out the data.

Steps to configuration(Basis) >>
1. Create Logical System (LS) for each applicable ALE-enabled client
2. Link client to Logical System on the respective servers
3. Create background user, to be used by ALE(with authorizaton for ALE postings)
4. Create RFC Destinations(SM59)
5. Ports in Idoc processing(WE21)
6. Generate partner profiles for sending system
The functional configuration(Tcode: SALE)
Create a Customer Distribution Model (CDM);
Add appropriate message types and filters to the CDM;
Generate outbound partner profiles;
Distribute the CDM to the receiving systems; and
Generate inbound partner profiles on each of the clients.

To Create Idoc we need to follow these steps:

Creating a Segment
Go to transaction code WE31
Enter the name for your segment type and click on the Create icon
Type the short text
Enter the variable names and data elements
Save it and go back
Go to Edit -> Set Release
Follow steps to create more number of segments
Create IDOC Type
Go to transaction code WE30
Enter the Object Name, select Basic type and click Create icon
Select the create new option and enter a description for your basic IDOC type and press enter
Select the IDOC Name and click Create icon
The system prompts us to enter a segment type and its attributes
Choose the appropriate values and press Enter
The system transfers the name of the segment type to the IDOC editor.
Create IDOC Type
Follow these steps to add more number of segments to Parent or as Parent-child relation
Save it and go back
Go to Edit -> Set release
Create Message Type
Go to transaction code WE81
Change the details from Display mode to Change mode
After selection, the system will give this message The table is cross-client (see Help for further info). Press Enter
Click New Entries to create new Message Type
Fill details
Save it and go back
Assign Message Type to IDoc Type
Go to transaction code WE82
Change the details from Display mode to Change mode
After selection, the system will give this message The table is cross-client (see Help for further info). Press Enter.
Click New Entries to create new Message Type.
Fill details
Save it and go back
