Settings for converstion of Flash movies

Hi,
I have to convert movie clips of all formats (.mov, .dv, .wmv
or DVD VOD) to Flash to put online.
Can anyone help me to set best audio (bitrate, Hz) and video
(width 320 px, bitrate, framerate...etc.) to get the smallest .SWF
Flash movie file with the best/cleanest movie clips? Is there a
standard somewhere that people follow to do such conversions?
Thanks.

Have a look at Robert's Bandwidth calculator, when clicking
on the "grid size" you'll get a list of recommended frame sizes and
settings.

  • Best settings for optimum resolution Quicktime movie

Could someone please let me know what settings will give me the best possible picture resolution and sound quality to make the final Quicktime master from my edit before putting it onto DVD. The capture setting was HDV 720p25.
    Thanks.

    Terry,
I am assuming that you are going to be making a Video DVD (not just a Data DVD). If this is a correct assumption then you can do this very simply:
Thanks to Shane Ross and his stock answers...
#42 - Quick and dirty way to author a DVD
Shane's Stock Answer #42 - David Roth Weiss' Secret Quick and Dirty Way to Author a DVD:
The absolute simplest way to make a DVD using FCP and DVDSP is as follows:
    1. Export a QT movie, either a reference file or self contained using current settings.
    2. Open DVDSP, select the "graphical" tab and you will see two little monitors, one blue, one green.
    3. Select the left blue one and hit delete.
    4. Now, select the green one, right click on it amd select the top option "first play".
    5. Now drag your QT from the broswer and drop it on top of the green monitor.
    6. Now, for a DVD from an HD source, look to the right side and select the "general tab" in the track editor, and see the Display Mode, and select "16:9 pan-scan."
    7. Hit the little black and yellow burn icon at the top of the page and put a a DVD in when prompted. DVDSP will encode and burn your new DVD.
    THATS ALL!!!

  • Optimal Settings for Exporting to QT Movie

Hopefully this'll be a slam dunk for you seasoned techies.
What I need is to export my 5min music/movie into a standard QT mov. to share online. After reading through several posts I understand that mpg4 is a compatible format for those not having updated QT software? This opposed to the n264 settings. Its in letterbox format and I really would like to have it at a larger size and a better picture than what default QTmov. settings are taking it to.
    What Im running into:
I've tried exporting a few times with the QTmov custome settings at n264, but ran into issues with choppy playback. Apparently a still frame issue (used as a logo page) at the beginning of the feature. I've read posts addressing this issue, and will attempt to apply the recommended solutions (involves converting the still frame into an actual movie clip. When iMovie asked to do this for me as I was applying some vid effects, the result was an extremely grainy clip). I'm yet to see what deinterlacing yeilds when exporting the project. But I have yet to find out how to increase the overall size of the exported movie and still retain a clean and crisp quality movie.
I expect this to play on another persons PC once I transfer the movie via FTP site, and need to know format settings to accomplish this? The default settings put it at around 25mgs. I'm alright with taking it up to at least a few hundred.
Again, I've tried exporting using the QTmov settings at full quality. With choppy playback and a small grainy picture when played back on 2 diff Macs. let me know if you need more info, I'll do my best!
Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.
    Thanks all!

    Kirk,
Really appreciate the response. Im running a newer iMac (first generation of the self contained flat screens) with 264ram and OS10.4. I know it's not a load of RAM but it doesnt seem to be a problem. I've got at least 45gigs freespace. It's a pretty up to date system, and all my software is updated as well including my QTpro.
I don't plan to link or post my movie onto a web page at all. I just need to transfer the file via FTP. So I don't see why a QTmovie or MPEG-4 shouldnt work?
I've tried just about EVERY MPEG-4 setting available and although it's fixed the sputtering playback it has compromised it with a very pixilated, lo-quality picture. Like I said, I'm letterboxing it with the larger HD aspect ratio. Not the 1200 (sorry, can't remember off the bat the exact ratios). I've tried both CD-ROM optimized and DOWNLOAD optimized. Perhaps MPEG-4 just has lo-res results? But the QT Movie sputters horribly, with resolution I actually want!?
I wouldn't think this should be such a mystery? Im just needing a non pixilated, not jittery QT movie from my feature at a rather decent size.
Am I needing to actually burn a DVD in iDVD, then take it back into my Handbrake video converter and re-convert it? Or do I need to export in a completely differnt format, then re-format it with Handbrake? Grasping at straws??
    Thanks again, for ANY help!

  • Codec settings for Mpeg-2 to Mov ?

Hi, I have a few music videos that I want to import to my iTunes library. They're all in Mpeg2 format. My question is what codec should I use for best quality of the output file and what settings should I use for that. Qtime is 7.03. version.
One more thing - as the resolution is 480x576(4:3 aspect ratio), what size do I give to the output to look normal as it won't be dv played anymore?
    10x
      Windows XP

QuickTime 7 has some "flaws". I hope they are addressed in updates.
You are smart enough to know the square versus rectangular pixel issue with DV formats. QuickTime 7 (and some of its presets) do not properly export DV sourced files. The preset "Movie to iPod" will turn an NTSC DV file to an unusually shape. I expect the PAL version does the same.
An export to square pixel dimensions, to maintain a 4:3 or 16:9 ratio, may help your export. Use a "loss-less" codec like animation first and then convert.
Your MPEG-2 files are designed for playback on a DVD player.
I don't understand why QT 7 Pro does this on some files and not on others. When I export from 720X480 (DV pixels) I nearly always get a 640X480 .mov file.

  • Best settings for creating a web mov. from a motion project

    Hi,
I have been trying to get a crisp image online, that doesn't take a age to load. I know it's possible as I have seen sites that seem to have their settings spot on.
I am using H264 codec, which greatly reduces the file size (although it's still about 4.5mb) and the once crisp looking motion project, now looks dull.
Can anyone help? I am very new to motion (and FCP). What codec should I set my sequence to before I import the motion project to FCP and then what settings should I use for compressor?
Your help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

    You could also try Squeeze.
I've read that for highly compressed H.264 (doesn't matter for files that aren't), Squeeze has better quality. (would certainly like to hear other's experience - Squeeze seems a lot slower to compress from the review)
    Here's one review ( there's a more detailed review around somewhere )

  • Best Settings For Video With Quick Movements?

The video project I'm working on contains a lot of quick movements. When I try exporting it into a Quicktime file, most of the video looks fine, but any of the quick motions have a strange choppiness to them that I've never seen before. The choppiness exists only in the isolated areas of the movement.
What settings would you recommend? I have tried numerous. Or has something gone wrong with my Final Cut Express HD?

Try the Deinterlace Filter on the dodgy bits. I can't promise it will work but it's worth trying.
    Effects>Video Filters>Video>De-interlace.

  • Settings for sharing as Quicktime movie

I'm doing a huge project - converting old analog Hi8 home movies to digital via a converter box. I'm pulling clips from the event and wanting to export (share) the small clips as QT movies AT THE BEST POSSIBLE QUALITY. The "Size" setting that comes up is "Compressor Native" 640-480.
Should I go with this setting, or change it to one of the many options? I have no idea! I want to be able to watch the movies on a stand-alone DVD player and both PC and Mac computers.
I have no idea what to do, and need to do it correctly from the beginning.
Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks...
I did search the forum and nothing addressed my specific issue. Sorry if I didn't phrase my question clearly.
Anyway, I suspect the problem is that the Brightcove software does not work well with the Apple Intermediate Codec. I had no problem with a .mov exported with H.264 compression. This adds extra time to my workflow, but I suspect it will be a necessary evil.

  • Export for flash-movie file conversion.

I want to prepare files for the highest quality possible for conversion to flash-movie files. I recorded in HDV- edited in HDV- send to Color in HDV- and now my question is if I should send it to FCP from Color in 10 bit-uncompressed to keep the highest quality?
Also at the end exporting from FCP- should I change my sequence settings? Again I need the very highest quality for later conversion to a flash-movie file, and was told that uncompressed is the way to go??
    Any thoughts on this?
    Thanks- Adam.

"Keeping" the quality isn't really the issue-- if you're working in HDV, there's nothing to gain by going to Uncompressed, because you weren't working in Uncompressed in the first place. The exception to this is color grading and graphics: ideally, you would be working in a higher quality sequence such as ProRes (Uncompressed is probably overkill) in both FCP and Color.
Of course, I can't honestly say that any of this will make a difference in a Flash movie-- Flash is for web delivery, and to bring it down to a bitrate suitable for the web, you'll likely lose anything you might have gained from this process.

I think I have all the necessary software thats needed...

damir: are you talking about the standalone player? if so, in
order to view online content from the player, you need to include
the very specific URL that leads to the swf file. so
    http://www.mydomain.com will not
    work but
    http://www.mydomain.com/flashcontent.swf
will work (of course you need an active internet connection as
    well).
also, make sure you have the latest version of the player,
because some older versions may not play the latest content
correctly. not sure where you can download the latest standalone
player, but do a search on the adobe site for "standalone flash
    player for mac" or something...

  • Flash movies won't play in document or browser

    Hi there,
I am having problems with putting flash movies onto my website. I know this is a common problem so apologies for any repetition.
I have trawled through a lot of forums trying to solve this issue and so far have not found a solution that works for me.
First of all I'm using dreamweaver v7, on a macbook OSX (intel)
On inserting flash movie, only the box with 'f' apears in the document, and in browser, nothing at all. It doesn't worry me so much that the movie doesn't appear in the doc, as with shockwave it's the same. However shockwaves play fine in browser.
I have tried the following so far:
    - moved the movie .flv file to the same folder as the html document that it relates to
    - made the file name really, really simple. 6 letters and no other characters.
    - tested in alternative browsers
    - tried inserting another flash object (flash button) to see whether the problem resides in inserting flash objects, or if the problem is with the movie file itself (the flash button worked, so I thought the movie file must be the problem) - so then ...
    - I tried compressing the movie in a different programme - I tried sorenson squeeze - still nothing
    - As inserting the movie as a quicktime works fine using 'insert shockwave', I even tried changing the file extension of the QT version from .mov to .swf as I read somewhere that it might work (!!!??) but it didn't though the movie still played without dreamweaver
So, I reach the conclusion that the movie is not after all the problem - but what is? since inserting other flash objects does work?
Very confused! Thank you for any help offered.... Laura

I am a bit confused though - is flash video not the same as flash movie?
No. Flash refers to its files as movie files. FLA (editable) and SWF (compressed for Web) are Flash movies - not to be confused with cinema. FLV files are Flash Video files.
Just to confuse matters some, just prior to the creation of the .flv format, it was not uncommon to import videos into Flash and save them as .swf movies (videos). But that was only good for very short, very small videos.
Additionally, since you brought it up, Shockwave files are also referred to as movies. But they are created by Director, not Flash. Director, like Flash, refers to its files as movie files. DIR is the editable file and DCR is the Shockwave-compressed file for the Web. The Shockwave plugin is not the same as the Shockwave Flash plugin. Shockwave Flash cannot play Shockwave movies, but Shockwave movies can play Flash .swf movies - neither of which are videos.
How's that for clear as mud?

  • Settings for exporting MPEG for Vista MCE

    Hi
I'm new to video editing and I am currently playing with the Premiere Elements trial before I decide to buy or not.
My video is imported from a Canon HF100 in AVCHD format.
Can someone please post the settings I should use on the first screen when I create my project. I'm just setting it to 1080i AVCHD which seems correct.
Also I'd like recommended settings for exporting my final movie. I'd like to export onto DVD and some file type that is suitable for viewing using Vista MCE (MPEG I assume)
I dont mind waiting for the rendering if that means better quality. Should I just whack everything up to max quality? Or are there better ways to export?
Vista MCE is viewed on a Pioneer 42" plasma if that makes any difference.
My PC seems powerful enough as I've rendered a couple short files already.
    Thanks
    Alan

    Alan,
I *believe* that you have the proper Project Preset. As I do not do AVCHD work, Paul_LS, or Steve will have to verify that 100%.
Now, for your Export/Delivery there are some considerations:
1.) If you edit your AVCHD footage in it's native state, the ultimate delivery would be BD for play on your 42" plasma TV. You would Burn the BD with the proper BD settings. Encoding will be handled there. (see below)
2.) If you deliver on DVD-Video, it will be down-converted to a DVD-compliant MPEG-2. One option that this gives you is having all of your editing done in HD, should you decide to later go to BD.
3.) Another possibility would be to choose a Preset for SD DVD-spec. material and let your camera do the down-converting to SD. This will speed up both the editing and the Burning to DVD. However, if you later decide to do an HD version of your Project, you'll be looking at starting pretty much from scratch and doing an HD Capture.
4.) In your particular delivery scheme, you will be using a software player, instead of a physical DVD, or BD. It is the file, and not a physical disc, that you will be using. That is about the only difference.
Unfortunately, I do not know which player/players come with Vista MCE. I would *assume* that it/they can easily handle a DVD-spec. MPEG-2 file (the same as Burned to a physical DVD disc, but without the pure DVD-Video structure - just the raw file, with no VOB, VIDEO_TS folder etc. That would allow the movie to play. However, the software player can *probably* also handle the full DVD-Video structure and allow for navigation, just like on a DVD hardware player.
I would *assume* that this OS might well have BD equivilent capabilities, as well. There, you would be Exporting to an MPEG-4 AVC or VC-1 format for HD playback. This would keep your delivery in HD (like your footage) and allow the best possible image in playback.
Those are just some rough thoughts. Others will have some very specific suggestions for your particular editing and playback schemes.

  • Compression settings for G3 playback

Greetings, I'm using EyeTV export to convert recorded clips to QT movies. Although I'm working on a G4, the QT movies will be played on a G3 iMac. I have discoverd altready that the default compression settings create a movie that the G3 can't handle (it jumps frame by frame). It is suggested that I try other compression settings. I would like to, but I don't know anything about this subject.
For reference, The default settings for export to QT movie:
type MPEG 4 video (there are a lot of other options)
    frame rate 29.97 fps
compressor quality high (on a slider from least to best)
data rate automatic (it can be restricted to some kbits/sec instead)
Please can someone suggest which settings I might change and in which direction to achieve G3 playback. Video quality does not need to be great, I accept that there is a tradeoff.

Thanks. After some experimenting, I found that export as Quicktime movie as H 263 seems to play on the G3 with good video quality.

I have rearranged settings for mouse, air-cleaned, tried different surfaces, however, it seems to be misinterpreting finger movements and randomly trying to open launchpad when enabled-flashing between the app I am in and launchpad.
