Settings for fios actiontec router using coax when adding time capsule as ac router
I would like to set up my new time capsule as my main wireless router on a fios coax-wan internet that is currently using the m1424wr revisiion I router.
What are the settings i should use for the actiontec versus the time capsule and what is the best way to set it up to take advantage of the AC wireless on the TC without losing set top box features providing by the actiontec router over coax?
I got the TC to conenct via WAN to LAN on actiontec but i think that may limit my ability to take advantage of the capabilities of the time capsule.
Any suggestions ont the best set up given I have multiple devices both iOS, OSX and need relaiable coverage of a 3 story town house.
Thanks!
Tim
Best setup is to bridge the TC.. which I think is how you set it up.
I got the TC to conenct via WAN to LAN on actiontec but i think that may limit my ability to take advantage of the capabilities of the time capsule.
You do miss the guest wireless network and BTMM on the TC itself... but otherwise it is the best for everything else.
Tell us if you need these functions.
To cover a 3 storey town house a single wireless router is not going to be adequate.. if you can place the TC on a different floor to the modem that could be very helpful, with ethernet to link the two.
Otherwise you need an Express or two so the coverage can be extended.

My problem is my Macbookpro mid 2010 with OSX 10.7.5 seems to turn off or logs off before timemachine is finished with the backup even though I have changed settings for energy management to "never" shutdown when plugged in to an outlet?
I had this problem on an IMac and I finally found a solution in an unlikely place. The problem was a security setting. I don't remember right this moment the exact setting and I am not on that machine right now but when I am I will try to retrace my steps to the fix. In the meantime check your security settings and any browser or browser extensions for computer log off settings. These settings are intended to prevent unauthorized use and incidentally screw up your backups. Hope this helps.

Want to us my time capsule model A1409 as only backup. 2 TB hard drive.
Already have Verizon wireless router. Do not want to use Time capsule as router, only back up for iMac.
Do not know which cable port to use in back of time capsule to Ethernet port back of my iMac.
And also it is asking for password for the server John Garland's Time Capsule so Time machine can access it..
Have tried all of passwords can think of and none work.
Held the reset button for one second on back of capsule and do not see if anything happened.
What a conundrum.
Appreciate any help to get this working.
Thanks,
John RI have a 2TB Timecapsule and really only use it for Time Machine backups. But the Wi-Fi side is used to sync my iPad at times.
Mine is wiredup thus;
Eth cable from iMac to modem (not the WAN port should you have one), then eth cable from modem to T/Cap in the WAN port (bottom port with an O sign above it)
I believe when its connected up you may have to set up a wireless network. Follow the instructions to set up Wi-Fi and Network
and then give it a password. The WiFi icon should appear in the menu bar where you can switch it on or off.
Its been sometime since I set it with the help of Apple Techs so I might be a bit rusty.

I have used Airport Time Capsule with my iMac for a couple years. I recently purchased a MacBook Air and when it tried to backup to Time Capsule it couldn't because Time Capsule is full. How can I now use the 3TB Airport Time Capsule to back up both the iMac and MacBook Air? I don't mind losing earlier backups. I have excluded some items from backing up, but since the Airport Time Capsule is full, I can't even begin to back up the MacBook Air.
On your Mac.......
Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click on the Disks tab at the top of the window
Click Erase Disk
On the next window that appears, select the Quick Erase option, then click Erase
The operation will only take a few minutes.
Now you are ready to start new backups of both Macs. Back up one Mac first, then back up the other. Do not try to back up both Macs as the same time. -
I am using SURPLUSMETER I am also using Apple Airport Time Capsule as my Router that is connected to my Satellite dish Internet Modem ... Now on the Surplusmeter I have the option for PPP Modem . Ethernet Port , Airport , Network Card , & Adaptor .
Which one can I use properly to monitor all the wireless Devices in my housActually, none of the options will do what you are looking for it to do. That is because, this application only monitors the traffic from the device it is hosted on. That would also mean that you would have to run a copy on each computer that will access the Internet on your network; note their individual usages, and then, combine them to get an idea of the total usage.
However, if you are only interested in the amount of Wi-Fi traffic that only your computer is seeing, then the "AirPort Network Card" option would be the correct choice. -
Hi,
I just moved to a new place. I used to have my own internet setup and used my Airport Time Capsule as my router. Now that I don't need to use it as a router I would still like to use it as a storage device for my pictures. Can I still do that wirelessly or do I have to plug it into my computer? And if I do (which would really be crumby) do I just use a USB cable?
Please help. I have a lot of work stored on it and I am feeling pretty stuck at the moment.
Thank you,
CharlieYou can use your Time Capsule in your new network in a number of ways. One would be as a NAS device which I believe you are looking to do.
To do so, you would connect the TC to the new router by Ethernet. You would also want to reconfigure the TC as a bridge and disable its wireless radios.
You can do both of these using the AirPort Utility, as follows:
Run the AirPort Utility.
Select the TC, and then, select Edit.
Select the Network tab.
Change Router Mode to: Off (Bridge Mode)
Select the Wireless tab.
Change Network Mode to: Off
Select Update and allow the TC to restart. -
I changed the ethernet proxy settings for Safari on my Mac Pro, when I was in a particular place that required extra security. Now I cannot get the ethernet connection to work when back home. The wireless connection works fine. What are the original ethernet proxy settings. How do I make the changes?
ThanksFrom your Safari menu bar click Safari / Preferences then select the Advanced tab. Click Change Settings next to Proxies. Select Automatically from the Configure pop up menu.
You may also have to select the Proxies tab. If any of the boxes are selected, deselect then click OK. -
How to use my Time Capsule with my Router?
My Time Warner Cable HS connection uses a specific modem, the Motorola Surfband SBG6580.
I was currently using my Tiem Capsule as my router and just a Cable Modem from Time warner, but this particular service uses this wireless router. I need to get my Apple Time Capsule back into my netowrk.
I would either like to understand how to use the Motorola as a switch or just as a modem so I can use the Time Capsule as my router or vica versa, use my Time Capsule as just a back up drive and leave the Motorola as my rwireless router. The onyly thing about this second configuration is that I need to connect to the Time Capsule wirelessly with one of my computers for back up, the other two are both on an ethernet port hard wired.
So this is what I have to put in place:
Motorola Wireless Cable Modem
Time Capsule
5 Port EasyNet Switch
iMac Desktop (Ethernet hardwired)
Macbook (Ethernet hardwired)
MacBook (wirelessly connected to the network)
Any thoughts great appreciated.
HenryIt's likely that your ISP will require that the Cable Modem is the first device in the chain. You do need to set the Time Capsule to Bridge mode, disabling the DHCP. Now, the Cable Modem is providing DHCP to devices that connect to it, and devices that connect to the Time Capsule.
You will be able to wirelessly connect to the Time Capsule and network.
Here is a simple article explaining:

Using time capsule with separate router
Hi
at the moment I have a Macbook Pro and get online through a 1TB Time Capsule connected to an old router with a printer connected into the back of the Time Capsule to print wirelessly.
If I switch broadband providers and get a new modem/router would I be able to use the new wireless router as the main internet hub (in a different room) whilst still connecting wirelessly to the time capsule to back up only (essentially using the time capsule as a wireless backup device only rather than an internet router)?
And, if I were to do this could I still print wirelessly?
thanksYou cannot use two different wireless connections at the same time.. that means you have to use either internet or time capsule.. it would be better to hook up the TC to the network in bridge so you can still access it whilst doing internet at the same time. So the best way is run ethernet between the two routers.. but if you cannot do that, then EOP adapters have become very popular and will generally work better than wireless bridging. Unfortunately the options for wireless bridging with non-Apple routers are poor.

I presently have a linksys wifi router, can i connect a time capsule through cat 5 cable for my apple products and to boost my signal .i live in a three story home and my linksys is in the basement. I have one cable on the top floor where most of my computers/ipads are.
can i connect a time capsule through cat 5 cable for my apple products and to boost my signal
Yes, configure the Time Capsule to create a wireless network using the exact same wireless network name and password as the Linksys wireless network. -
Can i use time capsule as the router with sky broadband
how do i use time capsule as the router. I contacted my internet provider which is Sky who had no info other than to suggest trying a sky forum.
It depends on the type of modem they gave you.. and if you can bridge it.
I suspect you cannot use the TC in router mode with sky.. but tell us more.. if it is adsl and they accept pppoe then you can get it to work.. otherwise no.. just use the TC in bridge. -
Can I use my new airport time capsule 3TB for my personal cloud
I am trying to get my own personal cloud. Can I use my new airport time capsule to accomplish this?
The Time Capsule stores data on its internal drive and not in the cloud. If you want it actually put in the cloud, it needs to be separately set up with a hosting or storage service.

Airport express very slow when extending Time Capsule
I'm trying to help my father solve a networking problem.
For the past several years, I had him using an airport base station and (2) Airport Express units as extenders.
He was using a circa 2004 Powerbook G4 17" and a MacPro Dual Core tower unit.
I finally got him to upgrade the Powerbook to a the new Macbook Pro i7. With the older computer out of the loop, I also upgraded him to Time Capsule.
Everything is installed and running now. However, the network speed in portions of the house where the Express is supplying the signal is very slow. A test on the laptop with DSL Reports gave an average upload speed of about 200.
When I move the laptop right next to the Time Capsule, I got a DSL Report speed of 22,000!
This issue is not laptop specific (it shows up more on the MacPro because it's in a back room), but seems directly related to the speed passing through the Airport Express.
What did I do wrong or do the Express units need to be upgraded (they are on firmware 6.3)?
Thanks!Bob -
Was wondering if you can elaborate on your response and perhaps help me? I apologize if I have missed this topic covered elsewhere.
I am using a N-capable Time Capsule and an older model G-speed airport express. My biggest issue is that my wireless speeds are 1.5 download and 1.9 upload when in fact my cable modem pumps out 15! In reading your posts I see that my network is likely dropped down to G due to my old express, and in fact my computer may be running of a spliced version of that if using WDS settings?
I think i'll end up calling apple support at some point but was curious if you can go over the facts of using N and G together, and if i can have my macbook pro speak to my N network only and my iphone 3G speak to G airport express only?
Last piece of info is I use the airport express for my music.... not sure if this means they must be WDS or not? I'm just looking to get my N devices as fast as possible while continuing to use my G express. If you tell me i need to upgrade to a N express I can live with it.... but if i can avoid the $100 and work with what i have...all the better!
Thanks in advance,

Acces time capsule from different router
Every time I try to connect from my devices. (Macbook pro, iPhone, iPad and W7) from another router in my house, the time capsule goes offline. I can't access through file sharing or airport utility.
As soon as I connect to my time capsule Wi-Fi, there is no problem. Is there a way to connect to the time capsule without having to connect my time capsule.
I live in a big house, when some old isolating which interrupts the signal.
My time capsule have the 7.7.3 version installed on it.
Can anybody help me? Thank you.I have the Zyxel VMG8924-B10A, which is functioning as our Router. Which goes through a switch and then up to my TC.
The TC is in router mode.
Looking at your pictures.. thanks for posting them.. I can figure out what I need from most of the shots.. you are not routing on the TC.. you have it correctly set to bridge mode.
So your issue of the TC actually failing at the point of access is harder to follow.
I do want you to do a clean up of the names.
At the moment you have names with spaces.. this is not going to help windows and nowadays it won't help the Mac to work reliably either.
You can even changed the disk name to Time Capsule which won't work in windows.
So please factory reset the TC and start over.
Rename the base station to TCgen5, wireless to TCwifi and hard disk name to say TCdata (your USB drive you can ignore for now).
It should still be in bridge mode and otherwise the same.
Once you get it going again.. if you still have issues try plugging the ethernet from the switch.. into a LAN port instead of WAN.. it doesn't matter which you use actually once bridged. Do the connectivity lights on the switch show everything is working ok?
Once you do the above in windows.. it is well worth while loading the airport utility for windows if you have not already done so.. it may not work well with the later Airport routers but it does provide bonjour for windows and some other utilities.
Tell me then how it goes. There is also a domain issue which can cause problems so I might get you to post a netstat scan from the airport utility in one of the main computers. -
Airport Time capsule behind cisco router download speed
My airport time capsule is connected to the internet in bridge mode via a cisco router.
The cisco router provides a 99Mbps download speed. However, when I " bridge" my time capsule in between (wired) the speed slows down to 9 Mbps.
I have already tried to assign a static DHCP IP to my time capsules MAC address and disabled DMZ for that specific IP address, but am failing to get the speed up to par.
Any suggestions?I have used Time capsule 1.5 year behind a copperjet modem on ADSL, no problems.
Changed provider and am connected by cable with new cisco modem including router.
So the set up looks like:
internet>cisco modem/router>airport time capsule>macbook pro
The cisco modem without airport time capsule is working ok: when logged in speed is 99 Mbps as it should be (wired and wireless)
Connecting cisco router with UTP cable to time capsule and time capsule with UTP to macbook slows down speed to 9 Mbps
(time capsule in bridgemode)
Specs:
Macbook pro OSX yosemite
Airport Time capsule 2TB 2013 (v 7.7.3)
Cisco modem/router:EPC3928
