Settings for ripping an audio book cd

I recently started ripping an audio book cd.  I wanted to set it up like other iTunes store audio books are recognized on my ipod.  I changed the genre to Audio Book CD, and changed in the Options tab to "Audiobook".  It went from being an album in my library to disappearing altogether, although I can still find it on my hard drive and can't figure out why its gone from my iTunes interface.

I know this is over a month old, but thought that I would answer you, since no one else has. The Audiobook has not disappeared. You are looking in your MUSIC library. You need to switch to the BOOKS library and choose AUDIOBOOKS from the tabs at the top (provided you have the latest version of iTunes).
I hope this helps!

  • What are the best settings for ripping cd's in the AAC format?

I have researched and found out that the AAC format rules over the MP3 format as fas as sound quality goes with lossy formats. Example: AAC at 128 is better than MP3 at 160 as so forth. My questions are: What are the best settings for ripping cd's in the AAC format? Will I be able to burn cd mixes with the tracks I import into itunes after importing using the AAC format? Does the AAC format have VBR like the MP3 format? Is there other ripping software such as dbPoweramp and Exact Audio Copy that does a better job ripping cd's in the AAC format? Please help!

It is a matter of opinion, but I suggest 256 kb/s, CBR, and leave all other settings on automatic.
Will I be able to burn cd mixes with the tracks I import into itunes after importing using the AAC format?
Yes. Just put them in a playlist and burn.
Does the AAC format have VBR like the MP3 format?
Yes. You will see it as an option in the Import Settings.

EAC does a better job of correcting errors in damaged CDs, but for normal CDs iTunes does a fine job of ripping to AAC.

  • No settings for Apple Lossless Audio Codec found in Compressor

For archiving reasons I have to convert many audio files to Apple Lossless (ALAC). So I thought it would be easy using Compressor 4 and and a suitable droplet. I was astonished that here are only settings for the following audio formats: AAC, AC3, AIFF, CAF, MP3 and WAV.
No Apple Lossless Codec in the settings?
Does anyone know how to create ALAC files

This setting generates a QuickTime file with the extension .mov
Of course it does. Why would that be a problem? "Apple Lossless" is not a file format, it's a codec.
OK, if I change the extension manually to m4a it seems to be an ALAC file, but I am not sure if it a "correct" one in regard to the specifications.
There is no "ALAC" file format specification. What are you going to use the files for?
ALAC isn't specified at all. The audio codec is called "Apple Lossless", and it is a set of algorithms to encode audio data, and a specification for a bitstream of audio data encoded such. It can be put in various containers, the most common being MPEG-4 and Apple Quicktime, but nothing will stop you from using AVI, .mkv, .ogg or anything else as the container format.
If you're unhappy with Compressor, which only seems to offer the QuickTime container format for Apple Lossless-encoded audio, there might be other tools that will transfer it into another container while leaving the actual encoded data untouched.
Since the Apple Lossless codec is now free, mencoder might work, even for the encoding itself. I haven't checked MPEG Streamclip, Handbrake, VLC or others, which might also offer such options.
Quick tests didn't yield any success, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't work.
An alternative for lessless encoding is the "FLAC" (free lossless audio codec), which is usually stored in an ogg container file. I don't think Compressor offers that, although VLC does.
It seems that the exact thing you want is not readily available (i. e. mpeg-4 audio-only with Apple Lossless audio codec.)

  • I no longer have sound for either my audio books or my music on itunes.  I've tried everything--restarting, updating, re-installing audible app, and restoring the iphone to its factory settings--nothing helps.  How do I get the sound back?

How do I get the sound back on my iPhone 4?  I've tried all the fixes such as restarting iPhone, reinstalling the audible app, and finally yesterday, I restored the phone to its factory settings.  I still get no sound from music on iTunes or from my audible books.  The phone still rings (I have sound for that) and the voice control speaks to me, and when I'm typing, the automatic text voice speaks so I can hear it but nothing else works.

Since it has always been very basic to backup your computer and all it's data, Apple provides no way for you to transfer music from your iPhone back to your computer.  As you know, you can re-download all iTunes purchases, but music that you ripped yourself you'll have to just re-rip again.
You can try and find 3rd party applications that might help you.  I'm sure you'll pay, however.
Let this be a very important lesson learned.
    Best.

  • Settings for ripping my CDs to future proof my digital collection?

I ripped my CD collection about 10-yrs ago at whatever the standard bit rate and quality settings that were average at the time. I spent weeks going through all of my discs doing this and I can't help but feel that all of that work is obsolete by today's standards. I'm considering re-doing a percentage of my discs at higher quality settings.
    1. What is considered good settings by today's standards?
    2. What settings might I consider using to futureproof my digital collection for the next 5-10 years?
    Thanks!

That wasn't very good quality even at the time.
Re-rip as Apple Lossless (ALE).  That will be the equivalent quality of the original CD but at about 60% the size.  Except for staying on top of whether or not ALE is still a major standard in a decade or so you should never need to re-rip because it won't get any better than the original quality.

  • Best AAC settings for best possible audio?

I couldn't find anything in the discussions or I missed it.
I have AAC set to 356kps/44.1 VBR is unchecked as is voice. It says its optimized for the velocity engine?

I use AAC @256 VBR as I find that it comes pretty darn close to CD quality sound. I was using 192 for awhile, but also found the overall audio quality to be somewhat tinny & thin sounding. The following link will explain VBR better than I can.

  • Settings for burning iTunes audio files to play on commercial CD players

    Hello All:
Requesting your help in setting correct preferences in iTunes in order to play my burned files onto a regular CD player. When I burn mp3s they are only audible on computer. I have a number of voiceover files recorded in AIFF and mp3 from Garage Band. When I burn them onto CD I can only play them on my computer. Your help is appreciated.
What setting can I use to resolve this? Thanks!

Some really old CD players do not like CD-R disks (which you have to use to burn a disk!). If this is the problem then there is not much you can do however consider the following options.
    1. Try burning at a slower speed 4x or 2x or even 1x
    2. Try a different brand of CD-R disk
    3. Get a different (newer) CD player
Certainly from what you describe you definitely want to choose burning as Audio CD.

  • Best ATV-2 settings for ripping DVDs using Handbrake

I have a large dvd library that I want to get into itunes for the ATV-2 as well as the ability to use on my iOS4 devices. Can anyone share their experiences?

If you're talking about commercial, encrypted DVDs, the terms of use of these forums prohibit discussion of software or methods of breaking the encryption/copying them.
For unencrypted DVDs, Handbrake is one of the most recommended applications.
    Best of luck.

  • Why doesn't itunes have 320 kbps listed for ripping audio tracks from CD as one of the default options?

Now I know you can ignore the defaults and create custom settings for ripping audio from CD's, but I'm curious why the good folks at apple didn't add 320kbps as a default. I figured it would be a default option since 320 kbps seems to be the standard for good quality when it comes to CD rips.
Am I wrong here? Anyone have any ideas?

Apple hasn't stated why it's not a default option.

  • Error while downloading audio book

*So I downloaded an audio book this morning and my internet server went offline in the middle of it for about a minute. When the internet came back up again, Part 2 of the audio book downloaded fine but Part 1 didn't. It says Error 8007 and then "Could not connect to server to download. Please check the status of your internet connection in your web browser." Then it gives me the option to either "save" or press "okay". The "Okay" button just sends me right back to the download that's not downloading and I don't want to save a faulty and incomplete download.*
*Can I just delete it without iTunes charging my account for it? I really don't want to pay for half an audio book.*
*Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!*

  • HT201272 how do i re-download a alreadypurchased audio book?

Support instructions lookk good for everyhhing except Audio books..... does not work for Previously purchased Audio books to re-download.

Audiobooks are currently a one-time only download from the store, so they won't appear in the Purchased link for re-downloading. If you haven't got copies of them in the Books section of your computer's iTunes library, nor on your backup of your downloads, then if they are still in the store you could try contacting iTunes Support and see if they will grant you are re-download : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purchases, Billing & Redemption

  • Audio books wont move from music libary

if i rip a audio book from cd and import into itunes. there seems to be no way to move it into the audio book libary. can anyone help

I have the same issue, although I am on a Mac. The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane is in my music library even though I set its 'info' to Audiobook. I have 3 audiobooks in the Audiobook section of iTunes that do not show up in my music library, but their info is set the same way as the Tulane files.

  • Audio Book bookmarks

I am considering purchasing this phone and have not been able to get an answer to this.  I now use a Zen MP3 player to listen to audio books. I am able to set bookmarks along the way as I read so I will always be able to get back to the place I left off in the book after turning off the device.  Can you do this on the Blackberry and will it remember where on the book you were at when you restart it?  This will be the determining factor for me as to whether to purchase a Blackberry since I'm trying to combine a phone and MP3 into one.  I don't use the MP3 for music, only audio books and bookmarking my place is critical.  Thank you.

I found the solution that works great for me on the 9780.
I had the requirement that when playing long MP3s (audiobook/podcast) I don't loose my place within the MP3.  I am able to update the list of MP3s without loosing my place in the currently playing one.  I don't loose my place when connecting the BB to a PC with the USB cable and using USB synch to copy files to the SDCard.
All of these are accomplished by playing MP3s via File Manager/Play Folder feature.
If you use play lists or other methods directly through the BB media player, you will loose your place as soon as you switch off the BB, escape the player, or connect the USB cable.
If instead you use the file browser to go to the folder with the MP3s you wish to play (I have all my podcasts in one folder that I update manually) and select "Play Folder" from the context menu, the media player will open.
If you escape the media player that is opened as per above, the last point in the played MP3 is remembered.  This even survives any synchronization I do to the folder via USB or a soft power reset (ALT CAPS DEL).  It remembers the spot in multiple MP3s to boot.
This is a great handy feature.  I'm glad it works with the 9780/OS6.

  • Free Audio Book Trial with New

    Hi,
I bought the zen 8gb the other week and I notice that you got a free 4 day unlimited trial for an online audio book website. I can't for the life of me remember where I saw it or find the site. Does anyone know what site it is that offers the free trial as you get to keep anything that you download in the 4 days. I'm in the UK?Thanks
