Settings for Television

What is the best preset to use in Premier 5.5 for converting TV commercials in HD for broadcast?  Is it H.264 HDTV? Also, if I am editing using various files such as RED, DVCPRO and other HD files which initial project settings should I use?  This is with the end use to be for broadcast HD TV commercials.

Your broadcaster will have a published spec and requirements sheet with all the info required for deliverables.
Broadcaster specs vary from one to the other.
As Jim said match your footage to your edit sequence.....to which I would add..the lowest common denominator ( rez) of your source footages.

  • Best export settings for HD video to DVD

hello, I now use premier pro cs5, from cs4 on my mac, love it, but I shoot with a cannon XL H1s HD video, my questiion is when viewing video from camera or on the screen in cs5, perfect hd picture, but when I export to DVD, i see in the media encoder if I choose mpeg2-DVD it goes output to 720x480, how do I export to dvd for the best HD seetings for DVD to get a HD playback on the DVD, now I see an OK video on the TV playback, but not the same as the original recording, can anyone help,, thanks in advance for any help.....

I found (via a friend who is experienced in Pr & En) that it all comes down to the export/authoring settings.
In Pr, my export settings needed to be adjusted as follows:
    Format: MPEG2-DVD
Preset: PAL Progressive Widescreen High Quality
Selected 'DVD' in the Basic Settings section of the
Multiplexer tab (this creates a single mpeg file rather than a m2v file which has a separate video and audio file)
Selected the highest possible quality (5) in the Basic Video Settings section of the Video tab, changed the TV Standard to PAL (to suit Australian TVs) and then
Set the minimum/target/maximum bitrate settings to 8Mbps (when I set it at 9Mbps, the final file had too high a bitrate for DVD)
In the Audio tab, I selected PCM as the audio type.
I also ensured that the Use Maximum Render Quality checkbox was ticked at the bottom of the export settings window.
    Then I exported.
    Once encoding was complete I opened Encore, started a new project, selected DVD as the authoring mode and PAL as the Television Standard within the Basic settings for the new project. I then imported the final mpeg file as a timeline into Encore, set all the appropriate first play/title button/end play functions as necessary, then I opened the Edit Quality Presets window from the File menu and made the following settings;
    Format: MPEG2-DVD
Presets: PAL DV High quality 8Mb CBR 1 Pass
Basic Video Settings - Quality: set to maximum (5)
Basic Video Settings - Field Order: None (Progressive)
Basic Video Settings - Pixel Aspect Ratio: Widescreen 16:9
Basic Video Settings - Bitrate Settings - Bitrate [Mbps]: set to maximum (9)
Basic Audio Settings - Audio Format Settings: Audio Format: PCM
    click OK
Then I authored the DVD and was quite pleased with the result. Still not quite to the quality I was hoping for (i.e. the quality of a DVD movie), but still a significant improvement on my initial attempts using default Pr & En settings.
    Hope it helps

  • ?Optimal Photoshop settings for slideshow-iMovie then iDVD

I know that there are many posts about file size and pixel size for optimizing photos prior to importing into iMovie or iDVD. I have read many of them, including many of them by Karl Petersen, but have been disappointed by the quality of the photos when viewed on the final DVD on my television. The problem I have it that almost ALL of my photos are portrait style and not landscape. A lot of the discussions center around avoiding pillarboxes, which I cannot avoid with vertical pictures
All of the photos are shot RAW on a Nikon D70 and imported into Photoshop.
Can anyone make recommendations on the optimal photoshop settings for creating the files to import for a slideshow in iDVD.
Specifically, in Photoshop, for vertically oriented pictures, what would be the recommendation for:
    1) File size and best way to control that in Photoshop. Should I increase the file size on the original RAW image import? (I currently use the 2000x3008 6MP default)
    2) Should each photo be cropped to an exact size or can I keep a specific aspect ratio instead?
    3) Should I use a pixel aspect ratio other than normal? (These will all be viewed in the US )
    4) Should the photos be imported into iMovie first and go through KB (even with no zooming) or can they go into iDVD?
    Many Thanks!!!
    Dual 1.42 MHz G4, 2 GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   iMovieHD 6.0.2, iDVD 6.0.2

Since posting the test I suggested you run, Alesse, I've done some testing of my own, with some interesting results. They aren't going to help you much, I'm afraid, but they might shed some light on the whole process of making slideshows.
I do everything I can to maximize image quality in iMovie slideshows. Then I've wondered what affect iDVD has on the result.
So today I played the same slideshow from three sources. One version from the camera, one version from iDVD and one version from a Digital Video Recorder (DVR).
First I created a slideshow where the same photos were imported four different ways, each as a four 4-second clip. The test used rather simple photos, 1600x1200 jpegs, about 500k each, from an old Nikon Coolpix 950.
The images were delivered to the iMovie four ways:
    1) I imported the sequence of images into QuickTime Player, then saved that as two DV streams, one Progressive and one Interlaced. These were dropped into the Media folder as described above. iMovie "adopted" them when I re-opened the project. (They were NOT imported by iMovie.)
    2) I imported the same images with Ken Burns ON (but with no animation); and
    3) I imported the same images with Ken Burns OFF.
The four clips of each image were arranged side-by-side on the Timeline, so I could easily compare their quality while played on the TV.
(The images were selected to include those that are easy to encode by iDVD and images difficult to encode — having lots of high-contrast lines like roof lines, lap-siding on buildings, telephone lines, the kind of content that tends to acquire the "jaggies". I avoided the bug where iMovie adds jaggies if you grant it permission to render UNrendered images as you export the project to iDVD or to the camera.)
I wanted to compare the quality of three kinds of slideshows:
    1) the slideshow played from the camera;
    2) the slideshow burned by iDVD and
    3) the slideshow burned by a standalone DVR.
To make the three slideshows, I did this:
    1) used iDVD to burn a DVD of the iMovie project;
    2) exported the iMovie slideshow project back to the camera; and
    3) connected the camera to a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) and burned a DVD on the DVR. This was so I could compare the quality of iDVD to a DVR recording.
Then I connected the camera to the TV so I could compare it, in turn, to each of the DVDs. Because each image played for a total of 16 seconds, I was able to play both the DVD and the camera simultaneously and switch the TV back and forth between the two inputs to compare the image quality of the camera to a DVD.
    RESULT
    • The camera image was superior in all respects to both the DVDs, as one would expect. Considerably better. There were virtually no jaggies. Subtler colors. Less contrast. iMovie 6 was obviously delivering the goods. Great quality, on every clip.
    • At first I thought the DVR image was better than the iDVD image, but reconsidered that later. Each had its own positive qualities. There was little difference. Each was slightly better in some respects than the other, worse in others. It was basically a wash. Both had about the same amount of jaggies, sometimes in different places.
    • Another interesting result was that all the clips — from all four sources — played basically the same on the camera and on the two DVDs. There was very little difference among the four import methods. (I expected more difference.)
    • There WAS an obvious difference among clips played in iMovie, however. The DV stream exported as a DV Progressive movie displayed with better quality in iMovie itself. The difference wasn't huge, but it was sharper, more "life-like".
    • It is obvious that encoding an iMovie project to the MPEG-2 format used by a DVD — whether by iDVD or by a DVR — sacrifices quality. You won't notice it much on some images — flowers, faces, landscapes — but you will see jaggies on others.
    • When the test was over, I watched a DVD slideshow of the same images I had burned a few weeks ago containing three iMovie widescreen formats: DV Widescreen, 720p, and 1080i. It was a close call, but I think they were all slightly better than the DV slideshow. Some images, especially, were better.
    CONCLUSIONS
If you want the best playback quality possible, use the camcorder to play the slideshow on the TV, not a DVD.
To avoid the jaggies, it may be necessary to avoid certain photos. It's hard to tell which those are until you play the DVD on a TV. Plan to burn a DVD, then purge the images that acquire bad jaggies and burn it again.
Softening the TV picture can help. My TV offers a tremendous range of sharpness, a feature common to new TVs.
    • My guess is that until we can burn Hi-Def DVDs, our huger and huger TVs are going to make the problem of DVD quality worser and worser. My slideshows would probably all look great on yesterday's "huge" 20" TV.
    • I don't have DVD Studio Pro to test. Perhaps someone can compare that too?
Anyway, I hope something here helps.

  • Best FCP QT export settings for HD video to Keynote?

I am exporting 3-5 minute long HD video clips shot at 1080i and then deinterlaced in FCP. These short vids will be embedded within Keynote, which is starting to have a problem with these 1gb to 2gb files (when exported at h264.)
HDV already reduces image sharpness it is. I want to keep the quality/footage sharpness up as high as possible. The selected video size ends up being about 1065 x 569, but that is a size, not a sharpness, one of the things I always found confusing when referring to it as "resolution".
So what settings would you suggest when outputting via FCP?

I found (via a friend who is experienced in Pr & En) that it all comes down to the export/authoring settings.
In Pr, my export settings needed to be adjusted as follows:

Preset: PAL Progressive Widescreen High Quality

I then imported the final mpeg file as a timeline into Encore, set all the appropriate first play/title button/end play functions as necessary, then I opened the Edit Quality Presets window from the File menu and made the following settings;
    Format: MPEG2-DVD
Presets: PAL DV High quality 8Mb CBR 1 Pass
Basic Video Settings - Quality: set to maximum (5)
Basic Video Settings - Field Order: None (Progressive)

Basic Video Settings - Bitrate Settings - Bitrate [Mbps]: set to maximum (9)
Basic Audio Settings - Audio Format Settings: Audio Format: PCM
    click OK
Then I authored the DVD and was quite pleased with the result. Still not quite to the quality I was hoping for (i.e. the quality of a DVD movie), but still a significant improvement on my initial attempts using default Pr & En settings.

  • ...best compression settings for a 12minute dvd

...other than 90 minute preset... and would it yield a better video? And what are the best settings for large screen television? The video is standard definition but anamorphic 720x480. Thanks

You can raise the average bit rate to 6.8 and max bit rate to 8. I use this setting a lot. Below is the bit budget worksheet I use. Though it tops out at 7.8 for max bit rate, it's ok to go to 8 in Compressor.
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/bitbudget.html
As far as the large screen question, I believe you are stuck at 720 x 480 because that is what standard def allows.

    Hello All...
Back after a brief absence, things look a little bit different.
I'm trying to take a 16 minute mini dv video and compress it for use on the web. I'm interested in any suggestions you may have on settings for the video and audio tracks. I've tried using Sorenson 3 (15 frames, key frames set to automatic, 320 x 240) for video and IMA 4:1 (mono) for audio. The resulting video looked great but the file size came in at about 255 Mb.

Thank you for the replies.  Everyone was correct about the jack, interface, and phasing problems.  I have been unplugging my motu audio interface and then using headphones at work.  I have not changed any detailed audio output settings in logic.  When I read that the jack might be a problem I tried switching headphones.  This actually helped.  I am using dre-beats headphones and they seem to be having issues with the mac/jack-(the phasing/panning problems.  I can use these headphones with other devices but not the mac.  I have to use ipod ear buds and the phasing seems fixed.  Hopefully this information is helpful to someone else.
If anyone knows how to correct this issue please let me know its difficult to know what my final mixes are going to sound like and I have had to keep bouncing everything into i-tunes- sync to ipod and then listen in my car radio.

  • ITunes looses photo sync settings for Apple TV (1st gen.)

Since the update to the new Photo app on my Mac, iTunes forgets the photo sync settings for my Apple TV (1st. generation, 160 GB HDD).
Every time I open the photo section of the Apple TV sync settings, all the options are turned off. Then I mark a couple of albums and sync the Apple TV >> all album appear on the Apple TV.
But after closing and re-opening iTunes in the photo settings everything is unmarked again. So on every following sync the photos on the Apple TV are easily erased :-( Resync them to the Apple TV takes hours (>30'000 photos!).
All the other sync settings in iTunes remain intact.
    Environment:
    - MacBook Pro Retina 15" with the latest SW (Mac OS, iTunes, Photo App, etc.)
    - Apple TV 1st gen 160 GB HDD

Restarting iTunes resolves the issue in the majority of cases, if it doesn't my second guess would be your security software.
What really seems strange here is that there have been no updates since well before Xmas, so after initially setting it up, the first update would have brought you right up to the most recent (and indeed the very last) .
Agh, how silly of me, I see it's iTunes you have updated.
If that's about all you've changed, you might want to try reinstalling iTunes and bonjour.

  • Different rich text/plain text settings for different accounts?

I use Mail for both my work email (MS Exchange) and my personal email (webmail/IMAP). Many of my coworkers use Outlook's rich text formatting options, so I need to have my work emails go out as rich text. However I'd like to have my personal emails go out as plain text.
I can set Mail to create new messages in plain text, but to reply in the same format of the original message. That takes care of everything EXCEPT when I compose a new message using my work address... in that case it goes out as plain text, and my coworkers complain that they can't use formatting, because their copies of Outlook are in turn configured to reply in the same format as the original message.
So ideally what I'd like is to have two different formatting settings for my two different accounts. Anyone know how this might be done? Any plugins, etc., that might accomplish this?

Since you are running Jaguar, Jaguar and Panther Mail do not support composing in HTML and this includes when forwarding a message received that was composed in HTML.
Since Jaguar and Panther Mail do not support composing or forwarding HTML, you can't embed images or photos in the message body anyway.
RTF with Tiger Mail is really HTML and although Tiger Mail does not include an HTML composer/editor, you can copy/paste HTML format from a web page and forward HTML received.
Images/photos and single page PDF attachments are revealed as inline or viewed in place within the body of the message by default which cannot be turned off. This applies to received and sent messages which is not the same as being embedded. Embedded requires HTML and an embedded attachment is not a true attachment. All Mail.app versions render HTML received but you cannot attach a photo or image as embedded with Jaguar or Panther Mail so it doesn't matter if you use RTF or Plain Text in regards to photo/image or single page PDF attachments which appear as inline or viewed in place within the body of the message by default regardless.
When you use Plain Text for message composition, the receiving mail client renders the text in whatever font the reader chooses.
IMO, everyone should use Plain Text for message composition. Messages would be boring to some but the majority if not all problems experienced with email would be eliminated if HTML was banned from message composition.

  • When I try to disable cellular data in the settings for my apps it will toggle fine, but once I exit and go back in to the cellular settings its back on again all by itself.

I have had a problem with my iphone 4s for some time now but I have just been so busy to try and fix it. When I try to disable cellular data in the settings for my apps it will toggle fine, but once I exit and go back in to the cellular settings its back on again all by itself. However, even though it says the data is on, I can’t use the data when I don’t have wifi. I tried restoring my phone a few times and the last time I did that, it wouldn’t turn my service on so I had to talk with a Verizon agent for a long time trying to fix it and finally they simply sent me another phone. I thought hey new phone, this part will be fixed. However, I got my service to work but it’s still the same problem with the cellular data. I have just left it alone and not worried about it, but it’s still not fixed and thought I could ask on here if anyone had any ideas. It has something to do with the apps actually installed on the iphone. Apps like the mail, safari, settings, itunes apps, etc. All my other apps turn on and off just fine. Does anyone have any ideas?

Read the User's Guide... it covers how to backup and sync the device as designed.

    HI
I created a web application and configured  rbs storage ,
I uploaded documents (for ex: 18 number)
after uploaded  documents ,  and observed the RBS storage folder, number of files are increasing (39 number) , its working fine

    Select count(*) from AllDocstreams
but when I delete some docs from document library ,
1)the doc itself deleted from document library
2)when I check the rbs storage  there is no number of files are decreased(its still 39 files ), its same as  before doc deleted from doc library
after some time I found the number of files are decreasing from RBS storage folder in sql server,

    1. WHen you delete the file from Sharepoint, it is still present in Recycle bin. This is a default setting in sharepoint for 30 days. Once files are deleted fro Recycle bin, it can also be delete from RBS
    2. There is a RBS cleanup job which deletes files from RBS. for more info check

  • How to change default settings for a video generator?

I'm using a video generator (Lyric Media's Pan Zoom Pro) many times in the same project, and have to change the default settings for each new instance of the generator that I create. I'm wondering if there's any way to change the default settings for a generator (i.e., length of clip, individual slider and checkbox settings in the "controls" tab) so that each new instance automatically has my customized settings when I first open it.
    Thanks.

That works for the all the controls/filter settings. The clip length still defaults to 10 seconds, but that's OK, since the main thing I was looking for was to change the clip's internal settings. Thanks for your help
