Settings to choose for encoding discrete 5.1 aiff files to AC3

I've received discrete 5.1 Aiff files (L.aif, R.aif, C.aif, LFE.aif, Ls.aif, Rs.aif) that I want to encode AC3.
Now I know to choose Add Surround Sound in the batch window and assign each track it's respective position, but what isn't clear is the setting I choose to encode to AC3. I would assume that I choose AC3 5.1 under the audio presets, but the audio config looks odd to me, so instead of waiting for the encode to complete only to find out I was wrong, I thought I would ask beforehand.

The correct setting to use is Apple > Formats > Audio > Dolby Digital Professional 5.1.
The Audio Coding Mode defaults to L, C, R, Ls, Rs, which is what you should have set
in the Add Surround Sound interface.
Since you have a discrete LFE channel, you'll also need to check "Enable Low Frequency Effects".
If you don't have a surround audio system connected to your computer,
Compressor's Preview will downmix to stereo.
If you have any doubts about your workflow, make six short test files, with a recording
of your voice saying "Left Front", "Center", etc.

I have the new iPhone 6 Plus. I have all the new operating systems. Since I received the phone I have been having problems syncing. I have it set to sync over WiFi. After days of getting frustrated I finally found a solution: Don't use itunes to sync music. After going through pages of possible solutions (restores, syncing albums one at a time, removing all music, deactivating accounts, making a call while syncing and various other things) as well as trying to contact apple support (Which was a joke--They wanted to charge me $19.00 to get help for a problem with their software), I change my Google search terms to "how to sync music without itunes" and I found a program called CopyTrans Manager for free. It only took me a few minutes to add the new tracks to my iphone. It automatically organizes it the same way itunes would and you have the option to make your own playlists. Best of all it synced the first try! Itunes is now dead to me. Now I just have to figure out what I'm going to do with all the free time I have since I'm not going to be spending hours banging my head at my computer ready to throw my phone out the window.

I have tried sorenson spark, it did it's job. As far as I
remember there were 3 quality settings, the low and medium seem to
be most appropriate. Testing will give you the best option for your
individual case.

Which processor to choose for Final Cut Pro working with files from DSLR?

I am shooting in hd with Canon Eos 5d MK II and another camera the Panasonic HDC sd700.
I am considering upgrading my Mac to either a stationary Mac Pro or an Imac 27 inch (which is a bit more flexible).
1.) How much difference in performance of FCP between the 2,8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon "Nehalem" and the 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5 (the latter installed in the Imac)??????
2.) How much need is there for external esata drives which I can get with the Mac Pro option in regard to performance needs in comparison with the slower FW800 I get with the Imac? Is this crucial? Will FW 800 external drives be to slow?
I am thinking of installing 8GB of ram if I go for the Imac and 6GB of ram if I go for the Mac Pro.

A point to remember Motion uses the RAM on the graphics card for rendering not the machine RAM .. I have also read that while FCP is still 32bit it can only access something like 4 / 6Gb RAM at a time .. so as a previous post says you can always add more RAM and more HDDs in a MAC Pro .. indeed it is a breeze to upgrade a graphics card too .. I have both a MAC Pro and an i7 iMAC I never use the iMAC for FCS work .. it is powerful enough but Geekbench (free benchmark tool http://www.primatelabs.ca/geekbench/) puts my MAC Pro way ahead of the iMAC .. my Pro is a 2 X Quad Core 2.26 with 12Gb RAM

The CompressHD / Matrox MAX solution is currently purposed for encoding BluRay compliant H.264 files for personal or otherwise low volume Blu Ray authoring (ie either one by one or via duplication) ... high volume authoring / replication is indeed a whole other ball game and with it come some not insubstantial costs over and above what you may be used to with standard DVD replication:
$500/yr (or a $3000 one time payment) for the license (ie to be allowed in the BD replication club)
$500 per master (so if anything's wrong with your master then making another costs another $500)
+ a 4c royalty fee per disc
Bear in mind that these costs exist despite how you premaster the BD CMF (BluRay Disc Cutting Master Format) ie the replication compliant master volume.
If you are a Mac stalwart, Rivergate Software's very reasonably priced BluStreak Premaster software looks to be where its at for premastering the MD CMF volume.

Go to Compressor inspector window>Encoder tab>Click Video: Settings button>In the window that comes up go to Data Rate and change the default 220 Kbits/sec to 150.
The resulting file (if DV, under a minute) will definiteltly be under 2MB and quality good enough. Remember that quality always depends on the source, the greater your original footage looks the better the compression result.

I have a problem understanding the bitrate settings when trying to encode an FLV for Flash 8 or higher, using two passes. When you choose to use two passes, you are presented with a bunch of different options, including "Minimum Bitrate [%target]", "Maximum Bitrate [%target]", and "Bitrate Variability [%target]". These are not really explained properly in the online manuals I've seen out there. Let's say you want to have a Costant bitrate (CBR) of 900 kbps, and you want to have two encoding passes, what do you set the other sliders to? I can't make heads or tails out of them. The defaults are
Minimum Bitrate [%target] 80
Maximum Bitrate [%target] 120
Bitrate Variability [%target] 80

Here is a little more background info concerning selecting a bitrate for video delivered over the Web:
Video bit rate
One of the principle of goal setting is to "Begin with the end in mind". In this case it'll be very hard to give good recommendations because the end is not defined. So I'll just make a few assumptions and you can correct me as needed.
First, I'll assume that since you are converting to Flash, you want to deliver this video over the Internet. If that's true, then we'll have to make some assumptions on the Internet connection download speeds of your potential viewers. Let's just say that most have at least a 1.5Mb connection or faster.
OK, that would mean that a video bitrate of half that should usually provide a video download that is not interupped by buffering (most of the time anyway). So assuming a video bitrate of 750kbps, what would the optimum display dimensions be?
Before we decide, here's a little info about bitrate. For highest quality playback, the video bitrate is tied directly to the display dimensions. That is, the larger the display, the more incoming data is required to properly display the video. Think of bitrate in terms of a can of paint. If you have 1 quart of paint, you might be able to do a very nice job on a 32 X 24 foot area. But if you try to stretch that same amount of paint out over a 64 X 48 foot area, the coverage will not be nearly as good and you get poor results.
In the same way, a video displayed at 640 X 480 pixels will require 4 times the bitrate as a video displayed at 320 X 240 pixels to produce the same quality. So for example a video with a bitrate of 100kbps, displayed at 160 X 120 will produce the same quality results as a video with a bitrate of 1600kbps if displayed at 640 X 480.
So to boil it all down, video bitrates of 750kbps, even up to 1000kbps can usually get delivered of the Internet on most high speed connections. Higher bit rates may work for really fast connections but will cause problems for viewers with slower connections. Video display size has a direct bearing on the final quality. In the 750 to 1000kbps range, display size should be kept around 450 or 500 width max (and whatever height the aspect ratio calls for). Yes it can be displayed larger, but the quality will suffer.
Sound like your audio settings are fine, especially for Internet delivery.
As for framerate, maintain the original raw video framerate for best results. So if the video was shot at 24fps, leave it.
As for video converters, do you have the Flash 8 Video Converter? It works just fine for video to be delivered over the Internet. Remember, you are taking a Cadillac version of video (h.264 HD) and stuffing it into a Chevy body to get it to work over the Internet.

Milo: "The settings you choose in Save Adobe PDF dialog...

Something has changed in CS4 for me on my XP based PC.
When I try to save a PSD as a PDF now, I get a box that pops up with the message
"The settings you choose in Save Adobe PDF dialog can override your current settings in the Save As dialog box".
"OK" is the only option.
But beyond the fact that I don't know why this comes up and that I'm taken to another screen with the title "Save Adobe PDF"
where I have to click "Save PDF", one of two things then happens:
1) I click Save PDF and no PDF is created in the folder OR
2) I click Save PDF, the PDF IS created, but my PSD goes away and I'm being show the .pdf file in Photoshop.
Hoping someone recognizes what could be behind all this.

I've pasted a number of screen prints at http://www.improventures.com/temp/temp2.htm including one showing
that my version (11.0) of CS4 does not have a Save Copy option. But I've been using Photoshop CS2 and CS4 for years
and I don't think I've ever had to do more than say "Save As..." and choose PDF to make a copy of the current
PSD as a PDF without leaving the PSD. It certainly works that way for .jpg, making a copy without leaving the
original PSD! But I guess it's possible that I've done this infrequently enough that I have that wrong...but it still doesn't
explain why I'm being taken to the "Save Adobe PDF" screen instead of the "Save As..." like I had been.
Or why I'm missing the Save Copy option you mention.

I've pasted a BUNCH of those setting on the webpage above, hoping to help diagnose this because I'm sure stumped. Though I may have found it...I have a feeling one cannot create a PDF from a multi-layered PSD. When I saved a copy and flattened it, that version created the PDF correctly!

First of all, I do have to say, that getting in contact with Adobe System Support, is far from what I do call service :-(
I have this problem in Illustrator CS6. When I try to choose stroke weight, for example 1 pt.., the weight indicator jumps up to 100 000 pt.. and the stroke too!!!
I really do need help soon, because this have been a problem for a several months now, and I'm not able to work.
This is what I have tried already, that doesn't work:
Reinstalling the Illustrator hard wear.
Trashed the Illustrator Settings map.

Can we discuss MP3 settings in Audition for a moment?

Hello All.
First, I Have just starting using Auditions MP3 creation function, and would like to say that in my mind there's not a shadow of a doubt that Audition has the best MP3 creator of just about any program out there (I've tried many but not all). This piece of software creates MP3 files that rival cd quality and are better then anything I've ever created with any other program or that I've heard distributed anywhere on the net.
But, I would still like to know from Audition users who mixdown to MP3 for net distribution, what they're favorite settings are.
Could you list the specifications (including advanced specs IF possible) of your favorite MP3 and/or MP3PRO settings?
Do you use different MP3 settings for different types of music, and if so: which do you choose for which and why?
I realize that sometimes you use different settings for different types of music, I'm still not sure when to use what type of settings, though I have found some very good ones.
Finally, I have a problem. I Have this great sounding MP3, sounds better then all my others, but I can't figure out what settings I have used to achieve this quality. I have tried all the highest settings (that's all I use because storage space is not a problem).
0ne of my MP3's is has a bit rate of "467 kbps" ... I have tried to re-achieve a similar bit rate, with this same exact mixdown but I haven't yet found the specs and I've done 5 mixdowns... The closest I came was with MP3, CBR, 320kbps, 44.1khz, best quality.
^BUT that takes up twice as much disk space (10.5MB on the 320kbps file, as oppoased to 5.8MB on the file that is 467kbps) AND doesn't sound quite as good to my ears.

you were better off ignoring this pertinent question as you have done for the past few days, continue on, you're help is not needed here. I was talking to people who are actually willing to help, who are few and far between when it comes to Audition forums on the internet.
Don't get insulted, it's just the truth. Have you visited ableton, cubase, pro-tools etc... forums lately? It's a lot different, there's alot more helpful people and active discussions.
People on Audition forums either want to guard what they think is there "sacred knowledge" on the product, or they simply don't want to discuss something in a way that might make it appear that they're not complete experts, they're worried about their net rep. It's truly pitiful how insecure the internet audition experts are. They help only when they can appear as an all knowing audition entity and will not participate if they think their lack of complete knowledge in a specific area will be exposed. Too many Audition users are uptight and/or snooty when there's no reason to be, they're not that knowledgable, I'm sure as a beginner I've taught some of the experts a thing or two. The reason there's such a lack new users on the forums is because they're turned off by the attitude and uptight atmosphere of the "experts" here and at audiomasters.
It seems there's not much middle ground when it comes to Audition users, there's the uptight snooty crowd who want to think they know more then they actually do and therefore only participate when they can appear as expert who speaks above peoples heads, and then there's the beginners on forums like homerecording where the users are asking questions so basic they don't really warrant an answer. This leads to a void in actual discussion about the program, it's features and it's different uses.
This program should be competing with pro-tools, how can a program that takes so long to do a mixdown which sounds inferior be so much less popular, especially when it comes with features and effects that you have to pay thousands of dollars extra for with pro-fools?
I'm obviously touching on key issues here regarding it's failure to gain market share, if I had the time I truly should be hired as a marketing executive by Adobe, I could really help it make an impact with Audition instead of just relying solely on radio stations for any type of real profit, which could in turn hinder it's development if that market wants to keep it relatively unchanged.
Hell, I think even remember reading a thread where you said you didn't want to have upgraded midi-faculties and that you were partly responsible for this, midi is a powerful tool and while I don't mind it being hidden somewhat, an upgrade in this area would make a huge difference in helping the company sell the product as well as an upgrade in dealing with loop matching (which is possible but takes a bit more time then other programs).
I think many of the so-called "experts" with audition are, unfortunately, these conservative types who are opposed to any type of change even if for the better.

Compressor vs. DVDSP for encoding

I've been searching some older posts comparing Compressor with DVDSP for encoding. I'm using DVDSP4. I have always used Compressor for encoding Mpeg-2 and AC3 files. I started looking at the encoder settings in preferences. It seems that I should absolutely ignore these? The encoder simply isn't doing any work at this point? If circumstances were different and the DVDSP encoder were the way to go, what exactly - what kind of video would I be laying out on the tracks of DVDSP if they hadn't been encoded yet?

there's no reason to stop using Compressor, it gives you more control and generally somewhat better quality.
You'd use MOV files which it would then encode on its own.

What quality to choose for exporting .avi to .m4v

More and more I want to be able to convert .avi files to .m4v so I can view them on my iPhone or iPod Touch.
For DVD conversion and subtitled .avi files I am using Handbrake.
For the .avi conversion, with separate subtitle file, I am using QuickTime Pro and have Perian (the swiss-army knife for QuickTime) installed.
Handbrake works easy on DVD conversion and lets you choose from presets, like iPhone. This results in a .m4v file, about 700Mb that I can put on my iPhone.
The quality is very good, even so when I connect the iPhone to a TV set.
For the .avi export option in QuickTime however, the settings are less straightforward. I tried to convert to an mpeg-4 format, but then the resulting file was only 270Mb big with poor quality.
Does anyone has suggestions for optimum settings in the export?

The solution is actually easy.
Just choose in the export for "Film to iPhone" and you will get an as big .m4v file as the .avi with good quality and hardcoded subtitles.

Hey rbrylawski, just wanted to let you know that my ipad email problems have been solved. Called Apple Sup in OZ, I'm in NZ. Daniel Barber was the support tech from heaven!! I was about to return the ipad but solving this issue reset my faith in phone support.....perhaps until I call a differnet companys phone support eh? Anyhow, for reference the fix is below. My accounts are all POP not IMAP, and the primary smtp server setting had defaulted to have SSL switched on and the port was set to 5XX (something, cant remember). Anyhow, SSL was switched off and the port was swithced to 25. VOILÀ!! Settings/Mail, contacts, calendars/My POP mail account/smtp/primary server/ >>> server on, no username and password, use SSL off, no authentication, Server Port 25 Thanks for having a crack at it.
