Settingup Classic envirnment on OS X (10.4.9) without CDs/DVDs

Hi all,
Please forgive my ignorance... I am new to Mac. I purchased a used G3 333 Lombard and it did not come with any install cds/dvds and I am trying to configure the Classic envirnment in order to run some software... But I do not have a OS 9 folder on my hard drive... What is necessary to install the OS 9 folder? Do I need to buy a OS 9 install cd? If so, where can I purchase one? Thanks for any help...
Joey

You need to purchase a Mac OS 9 installation CD from a source such as this one. If you choose to purchase the 9.0 package, it needs to be updated to 9.1, and should be updated to 9.22 for Classic usage.

Have you verified the disk & permissions with Disk Utility? Can you start Classic with extensions off?

  • HT203242 I use ipod classic 120G. When I launch itunes I first of all see a message "The registry settings used by itunes drivers for importing and burning cds & DVDs are missing." I cannot sync my ipod. Any ideas?

I use an ipod classic 120G. When I try to launch itunes I first of all see a box stating "The registry settings used by itunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall itunes"   This I have done. obviously I cannot burn CDs but worse still is my ipod is not being recognised by itunes and will not sync. I have not installed any new burning softeware. Any suggestions please?

I'd start with the following document, with one modification. At step 12 after typing GEARAspiWDM press the Enter/Return key once prior to clicking OK. (Pressing Return adds a carriage return in the field and is important.)

  • HELP - How do you install classic without erasing OS 10.4.8

Please help....I just replaced my PowerBook G4 with a new MacBook and would like to pass the G4 down to my daughter. Most of the games that she uses are in classic from her old Imac. My G4 came with classic but I had to reinstall OSX a while ago and never put classic back in. I can't get it to boot from any OS CD that I have, please advise.
    Thanks,

    Hi FKTS,
The Classic files for your PowerBook G4 are on the original install DVD that came with it.
A Panther (10.3.x) install set of DVD/CDs most probably?
Anyway, insert this original install disc, and look for "Classic Support" installer, something like that.
    Double-click, follow the prompts.
Classic will get installed without changing anything to the existing Tiger installation, just like it would do with the original OS (Panther or Jaguar?).
If you don't find anything like "Classic Support Something":
Some original installations came through a first step of installing an additional software installer (example my iMac G4).
    - No problem: In that case, you'll have to double-click the Mac OS X installation icon first, then instead of reinstalling Mac OS X, you'll find your way to a Custom Installation of additional/bundled software.
    Proceed to install Classic.
Here too, it'll get installed without modifying your OS (whether it is the original one or your newly installed Tiger).
    Have fun!

  • Using iPod classic on two systems: OS X and Windows

I've bought my first iPod, a 160 gb classic. Now I would prefer to use this device on my Mac, but also on my pc. It works fine with OS X, but Windows (XP SP 2) can't use/enter it now. Do I need te reformat my iPod drive to use it on both systems. Are there any other solutions?
(I'v installed the latest updates for the iPod and iTunes as well)

*Do I need te reformat my iPod drive to use it on both systems.*
Yes that is one solution. Macs can read Windows drives so you could restore and format the iPod on a PC. iTunes will allow you to use an iPod formatted for Windows on a Mac. I've no experience of the iPhone or the Touch but Apple has until now only fully supported using the iPod shuffle in FAT32 format on Mac. in other words all future software updates for the iPod would have to be carried out in Windows to maintain the formatting. If your iPod is formatted for Mac it won't run natively on a PC because Windows operating systems don't recognize Mac OS-formatted disks (HFS or HFS Plus formats).
    *Are there any other solutions?*
Yes there are third party programs that will allow you to use a Mac formatted iPod on Windows though to be completely sure they will work with the latest iPods you need to check out their web pages. XPlay and MacDrive for instance get good reviews. XPlay is an iPod specific program and can be used as an iTunes alternative, MacDrive is more general and lets you access various types of Mac formatted drives on Windows such as CDs, DVDs, hard drives etc:

    Welcome To Discussions John-macOwner!
    Here is some additional info.
Review this page for functionality and capabilities of Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.x.
If you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased rather inexpensively, at some additional online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Unless purchased from AppleRescue the discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, or CPU Drop-in DVD on them.
    Explanation is in these links.

What's A Computer Specific Mac OS X Release
Software Update, Upgrade: What's The Difference?
Before upgrading to any OS X version, check to see if your Mac needs a Firmware Update.
If one is required, you must start the computer from a Mac OS 8 or Mac OS 9 System Folder on the computer's hard disk, not from a CD, in order to install it.
Once Tiger 10.4.x is installed, you can use the PPC 10.4.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.
Additionally, "Tiger ships on a DVD, but if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you’ll need CD media. When you buy Mac OS X Tiger, you qualify to purchase Tiger CDs for only $9.95."
Download the Media Exchange Program Order Form Here.
Orders must be mailed by June 22, 2007.
The Tiger installation set, sold at AppleRescue, are on CDs.

  • How to set release date in ipod classic

I use my iPod Classic just for video documentaries (mostly archaeology) downloaded from my DVDs. How can I either get rid of the phrase "unknown release date" or fill out that release date.

Got MetaX, which works! Use the original m4v-file from the computer. When entering date in MetaX, do it like 2013-04-28. Then enter the file in iTunes. Then when transferring from iTunes to the iPod, it changes to April 28, 2013. Perfect. Great product for only $9.95.

  • How do I install Classic?

I just hired an Apple Authorized Reseller to swap out my iMac's hard drive for a 300 GB model. They put in the new startup volume and installed Tiger, which I updated to 10.4.4.
Problem: I was accustomed to having access to MacOS 9 "Classic" mode before the install. Does the Tiger installation DVD offer a way to install "Classic" onto the hard drive? If so, how?
Also: will the new Intel-driven Macs allow Tiger to launch "Classic" mode at all?

Just out of curiousity I opened my Tiger Install disk 1 with Pacifist. I then used its Find function to search for "Classic Startup". There is a Classic Startup.app on the disk. It was in the Essentials.pkg. The only thing I can think is you don't have an OS 9 System Folder installed. I posted a link in a preceding post to a link referring to this. This is different from the OS X System folder, which says System & has a blue X on its icon. The OS 9 System Folder says "System Folder" with "Folder" capitalized. It has an orange 9 on it.
If I go to HD/System/Library/CoreServices there is a Classic Startup application there. Perhaps you could check & see if this is the same on yours. If this isn't here, something's wrong with your installation. I would contact the reseller.
About not saying anything about OS 9 during installation, I believe one of the screens say something about installing "Additional software". Can't remember now. Maybe the person who reinstalled your OS did not use this option.

  • Classic 9.2 uses?

    Hello,
I just installed Classic 9.2 onto my PB G4 from my install dvd, mainly because my kids have a few games that will run only on Windows or Classic. I've been using OS X now for about 8 months now and have no experience with OS 9 whatsoever and would like some help with a few questions.
How would do I check to see if Classic is up to date? Do I start up in Classic and check for updates via Software Update?
What are the steps, if any, to do when my kids want to play their games? When done playing?
What things can I do, run, while using Classic 9.2?
I'd appreciate it if somebody would educate me on the uses of Classic. Thank you.

    1. The first time you start up Classic, Mac OS X will tell you if there are any components which need to be updated.
    2. You can simply launch the games; when you're done using Classic, open the Classic pane of System Preferences and stop the Classic environment.
    3. Most Mac OS 9 applications which don't require direct access to hardware will run in Classic.

  • How do I install the Classic environment to existing OS 10.3.9

I bought a used 12" G4 Powerbook online which has system 10.3.9 installed, and does not have the classic environment folder installed. This computer came without system disks or the original install disks.
The reason I bought this computer is to run an old OS 9 application that will 'unlock' images that are on 'Konica' image disks.
What is the right way to have the Classic OS 9 installed? Also, if I need to reinstall the system, would it be better to upgrade to Tiger? as I understand that Tigeris the latest system that will run on the G4 Powerbook that will also run the Classic environment.
    TIA,
    Ken

Here's what I've collected off of eBay now:
    •  A fairly nice Apple Powerbook G4 12" 1.5 GHz Laptop with Super Drive and Airport Card. No disks came with this computer and it has a higher version of OSX on it which does not have OS9 emulation. I think now I am set to erase the hard drive on this computer and use one or more of these that I also accumulated on eBay:
    •  Apple Mac OS X ver. 10.4 PowerBook G4 install discs, this includes both disc 1 and disc 2.   2Z691-5517-A / 2Z691-5499-A includes Mac OS     9.2. These discs were from a 12 inch PowerBook G4.
    • Apple Mac OS X 10.3 Panther Full Retail Installation CD Set
    • Apple OS X 10.4 Tiger Install Disc Power Mac(Upgrade from 10.3) that needs Panther to upgrade from.
I figured I would need to have the Tiger install disks to bring the system up to 10.4.11 (the last that has OS9 emulator.)
I bought the Panther set to have the panther to upgrade from.
and, last but not least, I saw the original install disk set for a 12" G4 which may be all I need, so I got that too.
I'm checking back in because I have these materials ready and the computer and I wanted to ask if I should NOT partition my hard drive and just to a straight install of the original install set mentioned first which will give me OS X 10.4 and then I can get the upgrade to 10.4.11 online from Apple.
What do you think? What is the best approach for me?

  • Change memory for classic application from 10.3.9

    PowerBook G4 Sys 10.3.9
    Changing memory alloted to aplication...
Normally I'd quite the app, highlight it's icon, hit "command-i"
and change memory in the dialog box that pops up.
However this classic app give me the correct dialog box without my
being able to highlight minimum and preferred memory amounts.
The only change I've made since installing classic application
on this mac i bought used is to make myself "admin"
and deleted old admin after creating my own password.
Should I reinstall classic application? (Virtus Walkthru Pro2.0)
An oldie but a goodie very important to us.
Or is there some simple fix I'm overlooking?
    Thanks
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   512 MB SDRAM

Hi, Gregor, and welcome to Apple Discussions. Wow! I haven't heard anyone mention WalkThru Pro in at least five or six years. I used it to "pre-build" a total reconstruction of my house back in 1995, so my wife could see what it was going to look and feel like, inside and out. Darned if the house doesn't look and feel just like the model did (or better), so I'm still happily married. But WTP has been retired since then. It paid for itself dozens of times over, in a single use!
Are you certain that the icon on which you Got Info was the application itself, and not an alias? If that isn't the issue, then yes, it would be worth reinstalling WTP to make sure you have appropriate permissions to tinker with it.

  • Going from windows to a mac downloading books on my ipod classic

I got a new laptop and no longer have acces to the desktop that I used for my ipod classic. How do I download new books without losing the ones that are already on it?

You should be able to switch the iPod into manually managed mode. It should retain all the media currently on it and let you add media from a different computer. However if there is a warning that it will remove the current data then you should probably heed it and cancel.
If you can it would be best to extract the current content of the device to your new laptop.
    Recover media from iPod
See this post from forum regular Zevoneer for options on moving your iPod data back to your computer.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
By the sounds of it, you erase and installed Mac OS X:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607614
Typically erasing is not needed, and in the future to avoid this complication, Upgrade or Archive and install Mac OS X if your system otherwise functions normally. Your PowerMac G5 restore DVD that came with your PowerMac has the Classic environment installer.
One of these three sets of instructions matches up with that installer:
