Settinng up a mirrored raid with 2 80 gig HDs

This is my first time setting up an xServe. I know I need to set-up a mirrored raid with my 2 80 gig drives, but I also read that I should not place my other software on the same partition as the OS incase I need to ever perform a clean install. My question is do I need to purchase a 3rd drive module, or can I set-up a partition within the mirrored raid scenario? If so, how do I do this with the Disk Utility?

Dan Soderholm-
I don't think partitioning a RAID is bad in some situations as long as you are aware of the pitfalls.
First would be speed. If one partition held data and one held applications, the heads of the drive have to scramble between partitions in order to grab all of the data. This slows things down significantly in practice.
The second major problem is data loss. If something fails, you are losing more than one "drive" and must deal with the associated hassles of rebuilding everything. If you have a robust backup strategy you can mitigate the negative effects of this however.
Your theory bout getting into trouble and wiping the system partition can be another false sense of security. Nine times out of ten when something goes south you will be wiping the entire disk and starting from scratch, and usually after you have spent considerable time just trying to wipe the system partition. It always seems to be the partition information that gets wrecked.

  • Fan Speeds, and Mirror Raid with New Internal Hard Drive

    Regards,
I recently installed and formatted a new hard drive in my PowerMac dual 2.3 ghz computer and I have a few questions.
    1. Now that there are two hard drives do I need to do anything to ensure that the fan on my computer can keep them cool? I think the fans I have in the hard drive bay is enough, but I do not know if they will automatically set themselves to run properly. I can monitor the fan speeds and temp from iStat pro, but do not remember what level the temperature was before installing the new one.
    2. Given that my new drive is a SeaDisc hard drive and the older one is a Western Digital, will this cause any problems in creating a mirrored RAID. I believe that both are 7200rpm drives, and my second hard drive is a little larger (I will just have unused space after making the RAID). I am concerned with the fact that these two drives are from two different manufactures. Will this cause problems or drastically slow down the reading and writing of data? Has anyone else experienced problems in making a mirrored RAID from two hard drives that are not exact matches, and even come from different manufacturers?
    Any advice will help.
    Thanks
    earpshmael

    Hi earpshmael;
Generally when creating RAID arrays the more similar the drive the less problems you tend to have.
The real question is exactly why do you want or need RAID?
I think so many people seem to think that RAID will solve all of their problem. I hate to tell you the bad news but it will not.
Generally there are to varieties of RAID available using the software RAID built into OS X which are 0 and 1. RAID 0 or stripling is generally for moving large file rapidly for applications like HD video. It usually doesn't help the OS. RAID 1 or mirroring is for protection from drive failure. It is not a valid backup solution.

  • Maximum drive size for mirrored RAID

I'm want to set up a mirrored RAID with two 4TB drives that I have.  When I put the drives in the tower (Mac Pro, OS 10.8.5) and open Disk Utility, the RAID button at the top does not show up for these drives.  I only see First Aid, Erase, and Restore.  Is there a max size for a drive that I'm exceeding?  Or is it something else?

Hi - from the research I have done, there is a BUG in the OS. A solution is to boot with an older version of OS X and format the drive with the version of disk utlity on the older OS, or yank out the drive and put it in one of those 'drive toaster' type devices and format it EXTERNALLY.  The problem seems to be localized when it's formatted with the drive INSIDE the MacPro.
You would figure that this would be a high priority fix, but NO.  I went nuts for a few days trying to figure out WHY I could not see the RAID tab.
There is also third party software that has a more robust RAID solution. I have NOT tried it yet, but you should check it out.

  • Mirrored Raid on Startup Drive?

Can I set up a Mirrored RAID with my Startup Drive without loosing the data?
I have a G5 Dual 1.8 running the latest OSX. I want to add a second internal HD, then setup a Mirrored RAID from my Startup Disk to my newly installed second internal drive. How do I set up this RAID without loosing anything on my startup drive? The new Drive will be the same size as my startup drive. I want the second drive as a backup startup drive.

    Hi Kevin Hawkens;
What do you expact to gain by having a mirrored RAID?

  • Unable to rebuild in mirrored RAID after hard drive failure

I plan on getting a mirrored raid setup for my backups of all my work that I have done. I am currently testing out how the built in software RAID works in OSX.
I have setup a mirrored RAID with two flash drives and it works fine, i then tried to simulate if one of the disks were to fail by reformatting it, and then i tried to plug it back in to rebuild it, but it does not allow me to do so the rebuild button is greyed out. Could it be because i had the RAID setup as automatically rebuild? If someone could walk me through the process of rebuilding the raid setup that would be great, i would like to figure this out before purchasing the harddrives.

Awesome, this just saved my sanity, thank you!
I was about to go totally insane when I couldn't find the option to add a new drive to the existing RAID mirror and then rebuild the whole thing.
In the Apple help, it just says "go to RAID" "click rebuild" - but this is absolutely not how it works!
Adding the new, empty drive by drag and drop wasn't mentioned anywhere - in addition to that I have never seen a program that has certain functions which can only be accessed by drag and drop.
Also the hard disk utility doesn't look like drag and drop GUI at all.
It was really easy as soon as I read this thread, so thanks again, this totally saved my day!

  • Can I set up a single 1TB fantom drive as a 500GB mirror raid?

    Hi,
I just got a 1TB fantom gforce megadisk to use as a backup drive. I know it has two 500 GB drives in the enclosure. My question is: can I use this single enclosure as a 500GB mirror raid with each separate internal drive as one of the mirrors? I haven't found a way to see both drives in the enclosure as separate drives, so I'm not sure I can do this. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

    Michael,
You can create a RAID 1 Array, just make sure that the Drive with the Data is the Master and not the Mirror. You can have the RAID Controller build the image (Sync the Drives), and then you should be mirrored before you even boot back into Windows. The OS will not know the difference.

    Richard

  • Program with Mac Mirrored Raid

    Hi guys;
I'm new to the Raid thing so please be patient.
I can make a mirrored raid no problem.
I had a disk go bad and needed to replace it.
I can't seem to figure this out without destroying the raid itself.
I read online about a demote button and cant see one anywhere on Disk Utility's Raid section.
Any help would be great. I find the online sites that I have found to be vague at best, and they always mention
things that I can't seem to find on the GUI interface.
    Andrew

So I did more digging and found this
    http://cryptosmith.com/node/309
I'm not going to go into how much of a letdown this is.
I decided to experiment with two older drives before I chance losing everything.
So I dragged a 1 gig file on to a Raid.
Took out one drive of the Raid, replaced another drive.
Followed the directions on the link above and its working.
But its telling me it'll take 1 day, and 10 hours to rebuild.
I can't count the number of times I could drag and drop the file in that time.
I forsee the drives burning out before the rebuild is done.
Again, I'm not going to mention what a letdown this is.
Somewbody must have a better RAID or solution somewhere.

  • RAID configuration with 3 HDs

    Hi everyone,
I have a Mac Mini with Mac OS X Server. I am figuring out if it is possible to setup RAID with 3 hard disks.
In the Mac Mini there are 2 HDs of 500GB each. I have an external HD of 1TB connected through USB. I was thinking to make one striped disk of the two internal ones and then setup a mirrored one with the one striped and the external one.
So that I have for Mac OS X one hard drive of 1 TB (RAID).
Is this possible? I know I could just try it out, but my server is operational and if it doesn't work I have to setup it all over again without RAID.
    Thanks for the reply's.

    Hi
Yes this is entirely possible. Whether it's advisable is another question? If this was the main production server with all services enabled and a company's business depending on it I would not do it. Only my opinion though and seeing as it's your server, you do what you want. If this is going to be a lightly used server why not and give it a go?
Most of us who deal with servers regularly would not (a) use externally attached drives as part of a RAID Set because of latency and possible accidental disconnects and (b) not use USB. If you have to use an externally attached drive firewire would be better (preferable FW800).
If your server is currently operational you could target disk mode it to another mac (over fw800) use Disk Utility to create a .dmg of it. Or if you like CarbonCopyCloner, SuperDuper! or anything else you may have in your 'kitbag'. Once you've done that you can then save this .dmg to another externally attached drive. Set up the MacMini Server's internal drives as a RAID 0. Attach the external 1TB drive and configure the RAID 1. Restore the saved .dmg back to the newly set up RAID. When done disconnect from Target Disk Mode and reboot the server.
Hopefully you should be up and running with everything as it was before but with the desired RAID configuration you want.

  • Creating a mirrored raid set with a hard drive that already has data on it.

I have a hard drive that I keep my photos on, and want to create a mirrored raid set that includes this drive, with its data, and another drive.  How can I do this without erasing the drive with my photos on them?  I am running 10.7.5 if that matters.
    Thanks for any help.

Creating a Mirrored RAID reformats the drive and loads a substantial RAID driver and some tables onto it. When completed, the drive is inherently a member of a RAID set, and will continue to be so even if moved to another Mac.
because of this, you cannot create a RAID directly on a standard drive that contains data already in any reasonable, risk-free way.
To amplify what The Hatter has said above, Mirrored RAID is not Backup. Mirrored RAID only increases mean time to repair to keep a drive failure from becoming a Data Disaster. You still need a Backup. Mirrored RAID does not protect you from deletions from user error, crazy software, or "just because".
I run a mirrored RAID in my Home Server, which contains all the Users files for everyone in the Household. And I also recognize (after being burned by it) that Mirrored RAID is helpful, but not a sufficient Backup by itself. I back up the Users Drive automatically to an External drive using Time Machine. [So what I am advising is not just theoretical, I am living what I am advising.]
With WD Black 1TB  and other very good drives in the under US$100 range, there is really no reason NOT to invest in several drives for such an undertaking.

  • Mirro Raid can you use a single 4TB disk with 2 partitions for mirrored raid ?

    Hello,
    I have a new 4TB hardrive.
After lots of reading, i was thinking that i could partician the drive to 2 (2TB) Then create mirror raid.
Essentially thinking that i would have photos on one of the (2TB particions) and they would mirror on the other  ?? as a double copy storage.
I can partician okay and the try to drag the two particians onto the "mirror raid set" and ithe following message displays :
"Can't add Seagate expansion disk" to the raid set because another volume from this disk is already part of the RAID set"
I'm now thinking i need to purchase another 4tb hardrive for this to work ?
Or if you "mirror raid set" is it actually particioning the drive and creating a copy ?
Forgive me... i'm not really very up skilled with disk utility, and basically just don't understand.
Looking forward to some help and advise
    warm regards Tracy Gr

It doesn't make any sense to mirror on the same drive. The idea behind mirroring is that should one disk in the raid set fail your data is safe on the other disk. Mirroring to partitions, if it's even possible, would only bring you disaster when the drive fails because you would lose the complete raid set and all of your data. If you insist on mirroring buy another drive.

  • Workaround to use drives with 4096b block for mirrored RAID?

I have 2 Hitachi 2TB Drives. One is a few months old and uses 512b blocks, the other is the same model, but newer and uses 4096b blocks.
When I try to set up the RAID Set I get the error: MediaKit reports block size error, usually caused by not being a multiple of 512.
From reading the message board, it looks like this a known bug when trying to encrypt drives with 4K block sizes or add them to a RAID Array.
Is there any way to set these up as a mirrored RAID array other than waiting for apple to fix the problem? Are there third party apps that can be used to fix this problem?
    Thank you for your time.

I have the exact same problem, and until Apple solves this bug, I no longer have a hard drive large enoug for my Time Machine back-ups. I have submitted the bug, but I really need a solution. Please help!

  • Mirrored RAID taking too long for Data Rebuild

I have created a RAID 1 (Mirrored RAID) using Disk Utility in my Mac Pro. I have used 2 x 4TB WD Enterprise Grade HDDs. I copied 10 gb data on to this 4 TB RAID volume. Then removed one of the HDDs & installed in my other Mac Pro. It mounted as normal HDD & showed all the data that I had copied. To check if Disk Utility will rebuild the data, I deleted some part of this data (2 GBs out of 10 GBs) & installed this drive back in the system on which I had Created this RAID volume.
Initially I was surprised to find that Deleted data is now absent on this RAID volume. But on Launching Disk Utility it started rebuilding data on RAID volume.
BUT for Rebuilding 2 GB data estimated time shown by system was 9 hrs.
    Is this NORMAL?
I intend to fill this 4 TB RAID volume with approximately 3.5 TB Data. In case one of the drive fails, how long should it take for Disk Utility to rebuild this amount of Data?
Is there any alternative way of speeding up this process?
    Will Apple's RAID card help?
All your suggestions will be appreciated.
    Thanks

I know this is an old thread but I'd be interested in what you came up with for a solution.

  • Mirrored RAID not mounting/not showing as RAID (Disk Utility)

I have 2 Lacie Firewire Disks set up as a mirrored RAID (created by Disk Utility). I've been using this setup for about a year with no issues. But today I tried mounting the RAID and I got this msg twice (one for each drive)...
"Disk Insertion - The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer."
It then asks if I want to Initialize, Ignore or Eject. If I leave this msg up for a bit it eventually just goes away. But the disks never load.
I opened up Disk Utilities to check and see if the drives were listed and they are, but the RAID is NOT listed. All of the first aid options are greyed out. I tried to mount each disk but they will not mount, I assume because the RAID info has been lost?
Is there a way for me restore the RAID or at least get my info off of the drives? They contain a large photo library that cannot be replaced.
    Powerbook G4 Aluminium 1.33gthz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I never technically fixed the RAID. I used the program Data Rescue mentioned above to look at the drives and pull my data off of them. What I found was one of the drives was in perfect order, and the other drive had stopped recording data MONTHS ago. Basically the RAID became un-paired and stopped working correctly, and only one of the drives was saving the data. It freaked me out at first because the drive I decided to recover first was the one that was missing data. But I then looked at the 2nd drive and it had all my data on it, and I was able to recover it.
Anyway, Data Rescue worked perfectly. Now I just have the drives running independently. But I am staying away from the apple software RAIDs for now, as I did some reading and they seem to not be so trustworthy.
Also, Data Rescue takes quite a bit of time to pull all your data off, especially when you have a couple hundred gigs of data. Hopefully this helps.

  • Degraded mirrored raid- won't rebuild

I've had 2 500 gig drives mirrored. When I set up the drives I did not check "automatically rebuild".
I just discovered ( not too long after installing Leopard) that one slice was "damaged" and the raid was degraded. I tried to rebuild, but got an error message that said disk utility was unable to recognize the filesystem. I finally erased the "damaged" drive, verified it and am ready to try rebuilding the set, but don't want to lose data from the remaining drive from the original raid.
    How should I proceed?
    Thanks-
    Ford

Well I'm sure VERY few people have multiples of EVERYTHING. I still have my data.
All I want to do is mirror a fresh drive with the other drive that was part of a mirrored raid set. That should be possible... it seems...
Please don't admonish me for not having more backups. I have a total of 1.25 terabytes of HD space with a lot of redundancy.

  • Possible to convert a mirrored RAID boot drive to a single disc boot drive

hi ... i made the mistake of installing my Macpro with a RAID on the first two drive bays as a startup disc. Although this doesn't pose any problems per se i would like to have a single disc startup drive now but i do not have the time or courage to re-install and re-configure everything (installation&config with all software takes 3 days due to the huge number of software i have on this machine).
is it possible (and how) to get rid of the RAID and convert one of the discs to a normal startup volume so i can reformat the second disc and use it as a work drive ? Since the 'mirrored' drives both contaion a full startup drive this should be possible i think but could not find any info on this.
thx for any help with this ...

hey .. funny how expert opinions vary ... i have a handfull of IT and software RAID experts who disagree with you ... in my case, i'd rather get rid of it ... ( however i still have to find a solution to clone my boot drive that works flawlessly with all my software ... )
anyways ... how exactly do i go about splitting the RAID, to make sure i don't mess it up ....
    1. restart from CD
    2. Delete the mirrored RAID set
    3. remove one of the HDs with the raid slice on it (i'll keep it as a backup 4 the moment just in case)
    4. restart from the remaining slice disc
    5. ... ?
do i need to do anything specific ... ? what about the name of the Volume .. for the moment my startup disk (the RAID) is called 'BootRAID' ... the slices are called 'RAID Slice (disk0s2)' and 'RAID Slice (disk1s2)' .. in order for everything to work properly, don't i have to rename the new startup disk ?
    i'm scared ...
