Settling Time Measurements of a PLL Chip

Hi NI RFSA Guys,
I was searching for testing PLLs using NI RFSA.
Fortunately,I came across this link from the Developer Zone,
http://zone.ni.com/devzone/conceptd.nsf/webmain/9BEA73B7DACD6C2086256CE5006CC900?opendocument
I am interested in using this "5600 PLL Tuning Time.vi"
for testing PLLs using RFSA.
However, the link to download this VI is not given
Can anyone post it on the Forum...
Any similar VI would also suffice
Thanks,
Dharmendra

  • Settling Time Measurements of LO

    Dear all,
We are going to measure the "Frequency Settling Time" of the local oscillator.
The following are test procedure we followed to configure LO:
Initially LO is configured to some X MHz frequency
Then we are configuring the LO frequency with X + 200KHz or X - 200KHz
Here we are going to measure the time taken from the LO will get unlocked to the existing output frequency (X MHz) and will be locked to the frequency of 200 KHz +or - the existing frequency.
The requirement for the settling time is <500usec
Please adivice which instrument we can use to measure the settling time?

  • RE: Problem with settling time in DAQmx Assistant

    Good day.
I am a postgraduate student at the University of Pretoria. We are using a PCI 6229 ADC, SCXI 1001 chassis, SCXI 1102C amplifier and SCXI 1303 terminal block for experimental measurements. We want to take thermocouple measurements at high sampling frequencies but at the moment we cannot log data at more than 500 Hz before the MAX warns of possible inaccuracies due to problems with the settling time. MAX recommends reducing the sampling rate to address this issue.
However, it seems strange to be limited to 500 Hz sampling rate considering that all the aforementioned hardware specifies much greater sampling capabilities; less than half of the SCXI 1001 chassis ports are currently in use. I would like to know whether there are any software and/or background processes inhibiting the obtainable sampling rate? Also, is there any way to work around the settling time problem of the amplifiers to increase the sampling rate that can be accurately achieved?
All help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.
    Regards,
    TUKS_student

    Hello TUKS,
Are you currently using a Thermocouple task? Does this problem occur if you were to just get raw voltage from those channels? This may be a limitation of the task in software itself, thermocouple measurements are meant to be slow since temperature does not change quickly. If you want to go faster you may have to acquire raw voltage along with the voltage from the cold junction channel and calculate temperature by hand. I would like to note that if you were to sample faster that you would have a considerable amount of data that does not change much at all, is there a reason why you have to go so fast?

  • Settling time on SCXI-1102C modules

Here's my latest problem in my NI-DAQ saga:
I can't acquire accurate measurements from any of my 1102C modules, with a settling time less than 5us. The documentation on the 1102C indicates that a 3us settling time gives you 0.012% error - which would be more than enough for my application.
What other conditions must be met to acheive the 0.012% error?
The problem is worse when reading channels next to open ones - the open channels float to full-scale, and the channel that actually has a tranducer plugged in is very noisy if it registers any change in voltage at all.
At a 3.125us settling time, the transducer doesn't register, at 4us it's noisy, and at 5us the signal is clean.
    Other than providing appro.
termination for all the open channels, is there anything that can be done to improve the settling time?
The 1102 modules are even worse, but since they're thermocouple modules, I can scan them at a slow rate and no one will care.

You can find some good resources at the http://www.ni.com/support pages when you search "settling time and scxi scan". You are correct that you want to ground out the open channels, since floating channels don't have any meaningful data anyway. The KnowledgeBase entries give more description on that. Also, the Developer Zone tutorial shows some tests you can apply to your DAQ board to determine its settling time. Also, I don't know if it will make a significant difference in your situation, but for accuracy in general, you want to make sure your board has been calibrated within the past year. You can look at the http://www.ni.com/calibration pages for more information. If you have an extremely high precision voltage source and DMM, you can even manually calibra
te the 1102 module, as it has an EEPROM.

  • How to change Switch Settling Time in TestStand

    I am using a PXI-4072 with a PXI-2533 and teststand's integrated switching.
I am switching and measuring a lot of voltages and I find that the switch is ocassionally shorting some test points together, even though I have ticked 'Wait for Debounce before executing Step'.
This is bad because some of the test points are connected to the UUT's supply rail and causing it to reset in the middle of a test.(I also think this is how I one of the SSR's were damaged as well but I can't be sure.)
The problem looks like the default switch settling time may be marginal because if I put a wait between the switching the problems go away.
Apart from saturating my test with waits, is there a way to increase NI Switch's settling time?
    Thankyou
    Tim

    Hello Tim,
You can change the default settling time of a switch by using the niSwitch Property Node in your module.
Left-click the property node and select the property Settling Time, which can be found under Module Characteristics.
Set the constant to the amount of time (in seconds) to wait for settling.
For more information on adding additional settling time, the above information is given in detail in the NI-SWITCH help>>Programming with NI-SWITCH>>Features>>Adding Additional Settling Time
    Hope that helps.

  • Keithley 2400 Configure Settling Time Delay vi

I am trying to use the Configure Settling Time Delay.vi yet it is not clear where it has to be placed to work. Where should it go in relation to a Configure Measurement.vi or Read.vi
    Thank you very much,
    Andrew

    Hello Andrew,
It may take some trial and error but looking at the library of VI's in the project, they should still follow the initialize->configure->read->close data flow. I would first Configure Measurement(one or mulitple), then Configure Settling Delay, and then Read. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

  • USBRIO-7845R. Analog Output settling time

    hi.
    i am using USBRIO-7845.
i have confussion about it ANALOG OUTPUT SETTLING TIME. According to data sheet, changing of LSB, its settling time cab be vary from 7us to 1.5us for 20V step.
in software, how i can change this LSB stuff. the settling time which i am achiveing is nearly 10us. i can compromise on accouracy but cant on Settling time
    Regards

    Hey Naveed,
So those settling time numbers can be a little confusing to read from that table, but I'll do the best I can to see if I can explain them. The LSB isn't actually a property of the 7845R that can be changed, but it's a measure of how close the output is to the desired value.
For example, in the +- 10V range with the +- 20V step:
It will take 1.5uS to get within 16bits of the desired output
or 4 uS to get within 4bits of the desired output
or 7 us to get within 2bits of the desired output.
So it's more of a measure of how long it takes to get to a certain accuracy instead of a property that you can change. Does that make sense?

  • Settling time

hello,i have a code in labview which is generating a signal like this:
and i would like to stop the execution of the code when the execution time is equal to the settling time of the signal, is there a way to do this??
i need a command which calculate this settling time of the signal that i am generating
    thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Personally, I would use a shift register to hold the previous value.  You can then do a comparison between the current and previous values.  If the slope goes to 0 or changes sign (will need another shift register to hold slope), then you hit your peak.  I'll see if I can get together something really quick to show.

  • CD settling time .vi

    hi,
I need to use the "CD settling time.vi " but i dont know threshold , limit  to  what refer , is threshold represent the (0.1% ,  0.2%) from final value , and limit represent final value

Are you using the LabVIEW PID Control Toolkit to measure this settling time?  You might want to take a look at the following DevZone article.

    Hi Michael,
It would be really good to understand your application a little more so that any specific needs that you have may be met. In the meantime, I would also suggest searching on ni.com for "pwm" or other keywords that relate to your application. You will see a faceted navigation on the left side that allows you to narrow your search for example code, tutorials, etc.
Please post back with more information and the community will be able to help out with suggestions.

  • Forms6i run-time crahses as I change pll

I am sharing some data between forms (6i) using pll. Variables are declared in a package spec inside pll.
As soon as I change the package spec (to add a new varibale, all the forms start to crash).
The only way to resolve it to recomiple all the forms (which are referring to these pll variables). Sometimes I had to put some messages in all program units for form to work (as it seems even copile all doesn't compile it)
Why is it? Is there a bug in forms6i
I though changing pll should requires recompiling all forms!
    Please help.

    > Sometimes I had to put some messages in all program units for form to
work (as it seems even compile all doesn't compile it)
That's the problem with Forms storing old compiled code inside the fmb.
Clean out all the old compiled code using the semicolon - semicolon replace all, then save the fmb, then close it. Then open it, compile, and close again withOUT saving.
We go to great lengths here to keep the PLL libraries UNcompiled, too. It keeps the source code files (.pll and .fmb) much smaller.
Here are the links explaining the fmb size issue and the semicolon replace procedure:

  • NI-6014 time measurement

    Hello,
I'm using NI-6014 card to measure and process three analog inputs and that is working fine.
    But
now i have two additional devices giving me two pulses. Time between
this two pulses is cca 0.0001 sec. and i need to measure this time with
accuracy about 0.000001 to satisfy my needs. i use first digital input
as trigger start on PFI0. i knew that i need to use counter....... but
some how i get stacked. i tried with some examples from labVIEW but
    results are stochastic.
i will graceful for any help or idea
    regards
    Mario

    Hi Mario,
I took a second look at that developer zone article, and I can see that it doesn't measure the time between rising edges.  I also searched for an example program that does count the time between rising edges, and I believe I found one. Please refer to the linked knowledgebase article which contains the example code.  The knowledgebase article specifies the NI counter/timer boards, but it will work with your 6014 multifunction DAQ board as well.  All you should need to do is specify the following parameters:
    1. Physical Counter
    2. Start Trigger Terminal
    3. Stop Trigger Terminal
    4. Timebase Terminal
To convert the results to time, you will need to divide the number of ticks between start and stop triggers by the frequency of the timebase. I hope this works better for you
    than the last one.

  • First Time Here... iMac Dual Chip is My New Child

Hi guys.. first post even though I've had an iBook G4 for over a year.. no problems which led me to the new iMac.. Tired of shutting down windows and having devdlr files hang, loud fans, hot power adapters all over the floor, and have been having a great time unplugging it to sell on eBay.. haven't had any problems yet (knock on my head) but if I do, I know where to come.
Been using Lightroom (beta), Office X, Photoshop CS2, and all have been running real smooth.. Haven't gotten into iPhoto yet, but my wife will dig it.
    Quick question...
If I set up my iPhoto library, log out, and log in as my wife, will she have the same setup or will I have to set it up twice. I have all my pics on a 250GB WD Firewire. Thanks in advance.

To your question, I believe you'd have to keep updating the iPhoto Library data. It would reference back to the external files (as long as you don't select copy into iphoto library), but you'd still have to keep the files in the iPhoto Library folder updated on the second account, so it would know about the new pictures and whanot.
Saw your signature said 512MB of memory. You'll notice so much speed improvement, if you add just a little bit. I bought my memory from Other World Computing, and it works great. I normally get crucial, but it was a lot cheaper.
