Setup 3.1.2 clean, then move dovecot 10.6.8

Hi All,
Information appears to be sparse but I'm still hunting so any help or references on how to achieve my goals here will be helpful.
History: I have been use OSX Server since 10.3 and have migrated each time up to my current install of 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. Main services are AFP, OpenD, Mail, DNS (local only on this setup, separate DNS on LAN has IRW hostnames), Web (Webmail, User Portal only, and test bed), VPN, Software Update.
As some of you may take note this has not been without issue because my User (OpenDir) & email has always been a migration and not a clean setup. With the exception on my OpenDir having some failed schema issues all is well under 10.6.8.
Goal: Perform a Clean setup of all Users and Email Accounts from scratch. After some testing find a way to match the GUID Dovecot Mailboxes to the new Users and build what else needs to be done as I have done before.
1. How can I do the Users & Groups data entry without deploying the Server onto my local network? (plan to do an Archive of Open Dir) DNS is the Issue here.
Can I just edit the host file and add a static entry to fool it while I setup?
Also when Server is moved to production it will need get a Link Aggregation setup of the 2 Ethernet ports on the Mac Pro, not just the Temp EN0 with the correct IP it has now.
2. Any Ideas on how to move the Dovecot setup after new GUIDs are made would be helpful?

Sounds like a solid way to go. Just curious with the "Export your users and groups from Snow Leopard Server" and import into Mavericks server will I still have the Schema errors I have under 10.6.8?
Since I migrated each server update starting 10.3 to 10.4 then jump to 10.6.8 I noticed some fields give me errors when I try to enter them. I was informed this was a Schema issues but I should not worry to much. (i.e. Under WGM fill user "info" fields in like "Company, JobTitle, Department") These field where added later in the server builds but even when I create brand new users under 10.6.8 I can not add to these fields since to the best of my understanding the migration imported the old Schema as well as other related Open directory data.
I will try the move and CLI perm on the Mail and post back my results.

My goal is to create a new sub-interface on the router and then move all the existing switches (all Layer 2) into the new VLAN, without disrupting the network (and remotely). I wanted to shed a little more light on the situation. The "new" VLAN has actually been in existence since the network was initially setup. The network runs VTP and the new VLAN already has an interface on the router and already shows up on all the switches when you do a "sh vlan" command. We have about 10 VLANs in all. In reality, I am simply trying to migrate about 8 switches from VLAN1 (which they never should have been on) to the new VLAN. I know that I need to create an interface for the new VLAN on each of the switches and then swap the management IP to that interface. If I could connectly directly into each switch via the console port, this would be a simple task. However, the switches are in extremely remote locations with special circumstances, thus I have no physical access to them. This fact has me a little reluctant to making the changes, as we can't afford any mistakes that would potentially cause network downtime. I am looking for some guidance on exactly the steps to take to achieve my goal. Let's call the new vlan, VLAN2. During testing, I logged into a local switch that was on VLAN1 (that's where it had it's management address). It did have VLAN2-VLAN10 as well, via VTP. I created an interface for VLAN3 on the switch and then accessed it via VLAN3 to swap the main management interface from VLAN1 to VLAN2. The changes took, but I couldn't access it via VLAN2. I am assuming this is because the router still has VLAN1 listed as the native vlan and the VLAN2 IP address is still assigned to VLAN1 on the router. What would be the best way for me to make the required changes on the 8 switches that need swapped, without losing remote access? It wouldn't hurt if the network went down for 5 minutes or less, but we can't have a big outage. Thanks.

If your country's iTunes Store allows you to redownload purchased tracks, I'd delete your current copy of the track and try redownloading a fresh one. See the following document for instructions:

When I go into itunes I get the message - itunes has detected an ipod in recovery mode. You must restore this ipod before it can be used with itunes,
how am I supposed to do this ?
I would rather take the ipod to someone to do the restoration - I still have itunes with all of my downloads on my computer, I dont want to risk losing this as I can re-install onto my ipod when it is sorted.

Connect the external drive to your Mac and drag the files from it to your Mac's internal drive. Then dismount and disconnect the external drive, connect the 1TB external drive, and drag the files from the internal drive onto the external. Nothing will have been deleted from any of the drives up to this point; the files will only have been copied. Verify that the files are readable. There's no reason they shouldn't be; this is just a precaution.
Now if you wish to delete the files from any of the drives, drag them to the Trash, and Empty the Trash while the drive from which they came is still connected. If you disconnect the drive before emptying the Trash, the files you were trying to remove from it won't be deleted. They'll remain in the Trash and continue to take up space on the drive.
Note that if your external drives are in NTFS format, you won't be able to write anything to them or delete anything from them, though you will be able to read and copy the files they contain. The NTFS disk format is read-only to the Mac OS, unless you have a third-party NTFS driver installed. To make your drives cross-platform readable and writable, you must reformat them in the FAT32 or ExFAT format.

Firefox4 on ubuntu, after awhile when I click on bookmarks and then move the cursor down to a bookmark, the list of bookmarks disappears. A stop and start of firefox4 fixes the problem but what is the long term fix?

I upgraded to 4 and I noticed that after 4 has been up for an hour or so I click on the bookmarks. I see my list of bookmarks below but when I move the cursor down to select one, the list disappears.
The only way I have found to fix this is to stop and start 4. I can then move the cursor down to select a bookmark. This problem has not occurred in previous versions.

No, I see the three areas at the bottom of the Bookmark area that you refer to, but that also highlights an issue. When I want to save a story to my Reading List and click on Share then "Add to Reading List" then go back to look at what is stored in the Reading List, my recently-saved item is not there.
I looked thru the History tab and the Reading List tab and have been in the Bookmark tab. But even when I Save a Bookmark, that newly-saved Bookmark does not show up in the Bookmark area.
But then again, the next day (and actually just in the last half-hour) all of the functionality came back. When I look at the Bookmarks, suddenly, again, all of the Bookmarks that are on my Safari browser on my iMac are now there, and I can now Save a Bookmark.
It keeps coming in and out and that is what is driving me a little nuts.

I see. but if I setup profit center hierachy first, then I got to redo the same for Cost Center. I thought I could do the Cost center first, then copy them to profit center since there's a "copy cost center group" function in profit center accounting.
Can I deactivate the profit center accounting since each time I skip the profit center entry during cost center creation, the following message pop up?
"Profit Center Accounting active but no profit center specified (CCtr 1110)"

You can directly install Mountain Lion 10.8.0 to 10.6.8, and then apply the 10.8.2 Update.

It's a Finder feature, related to Quick Look. You can hit the space bar in the file list to get a preview.
If that doesn't work, you may have an issue witha preference file or similar. I find rebuilding the launch databse works quite well resilving tis kind of thing, as does trashing Finder preferences

Using mavericks, mail, gmail. Moved messages reappear in inbox, then move.

Using mavericks, mail, and gmail and have been through the latest configuration recommendations (all mail is shown, etc.. When I drag a message from the inbox to a folder/label in mail it will reappear in the inbox briefly, then move to the destination folder. That odd bounce back to the inbox is amazingly annoying.
Ideas?

Whenever I dragged messages from my Apple Mail Inbox to the Apple Mail Archive Gmail All Mail folder, they were returned to my Apple Mail Inbox within a few minutes. I read a number of posts here, and fiddled with settings in Apple Mail and Gmail, and made a host of other changes until I was red in the face, but no luck.
Then I reasoned that DRAGGING the mail items might be the problem, so I conducted an experiment which showed that whenever I dragged items to new folders, Gmail was not updated with the new label, and so the mail ended up back in my inbox. Whenever I MOVED mail items by means of the menu system, the mail moved successfully. Therefore it appears that Apple Mail does not change the mail labels if the mail is dragged, hence the original problem.
With this information, I opened Apple Mail and Gmail (in a web browser) and manually reconciled the Inboxes with each other. Once they were identical, I then customized the Toolbar in Apple Mail to include the Archive Icon, to make moving mail from the Inbox to the Gmail Archive All Mail, easy.
This solved the problem for me.
