Setup Airport Express for printing with Samsung CLX-3185FW

I have bought an Airport Express which I was told I could connect my printer to so we can print from our iPad, iPhones and iPods.
Does anybody have any instructions on how to do this so I can access the printer on my ios devices to print?  It might be best for me to start from the beginning.
(I have already tried to connect the AX by extending the network but there is an error message coming up saying it was unable to extend the wireless network.  I also tried to join an existing network but I didn't have any luck there either.  I installed Airport Utility on my PC and I could see the printer under the printers options but now when I open the Aiport Utility, it doesn't even find that I have an AX!).  I'm not havin much luck with it.  Any assistance on how to start fresh and set it all up would be appreciated. Thanks, Jason

Unfortunately, the information that you received is not correct.
In order to print from iOS devices, you need to have an AirPrint compatible printer.  Your Samsung model is not on the list of AirPrint compatible devices.  See this Apple support document for more details:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4356
Adding or ssing an AirPort Express will not make your printer AirPrint compatible
As a possible workaround, Installing an App like Print Central on each of your iOS devices might allow you to print from the iOS devices to the printer.

You can configure the AirPort Expess to "Join a wireless network" and enable the Ethernet port so that Ethernet devices will be able to connect.
In order to print from the iOS devices, you will need to have an application like Printopia installed on your Mac. The Mac must be active when you want to print.

There is a free trial available for Printopia, so make sure that it will work before you buy the AirPort Express.

  • Can I use Airport Express for printing and Ethernet printing at same time?

I've been trying to set up a couple of laser printers that were given to me recently. The printers are Apple LaserWriter 16/600 PS and Samsung CLP-510. The reason I'd like to have both up and running is because the black toner for the Samsung costs twice as much as the toner for the LaserWriter. I have two questions that I am hoping someone will be able to answer.
    1) The CLP prints a test page just fine. I was finally able to get the Samsung printing while directly connected to my PowerBook G4 via usb (I had to install a Xerox Phaser 6100 driver to do so!). Today I tried putting the usb into my Airport Express (which I use for my portable internet and airtunes) and now the printer does not respond. When I try to add the CLP as a bonjour printer, I get an error adding the printer and the printer does not respond. Can someone offer some advice as to how and if the CLP may work via the Airport Express?
    2) The LaserWriter prints a test page just fine. I purchased a transceiver (albeit not an Apple transceiver - this one says Asante Friendlynet, the guy I bought it from said it would work though). The transceiver is connected to the Ethernet port on the printer - and I have a yellow ethernet cable (?) running from the transceiver to the ethernet port on my computer. I read somewhere on the internet that I need to turn on Appletalk in order to use the printer via ethernet but when I went into my network settings to do that, there was a warning that I could not turn on appletalk for ethernet without forsaking my airport. Can someone offer some advice as to how and if the 16/600 PS may work via ethernet without disrupting my (working) airport express? Also - I did not receive any software or drivers with this printer but I read that I may not need to (they come with Tiger - ?) Is anyone able to confirm this?
Any help would be TOTALLY appreciated!

Hello Kappy! Thank you for taking the time to reply to my question.
I should update you at this point to say that I can add the 16/600 PS printer through a process that I found called 'Direct IP printing over ethernet'. (I think I've done this correctly - but I honestly have no idea about network stuff). Here's what I did:
-went into system prefs and looked at the network settings under built-in ethernet tab. Under TCP-IP I found the IP address of my network host.
-In the Printer Setup Utility I tried to manually add the 16/600 PS printer. In the Printer Browser window, I selected IP Printer.
-Under IP printer, I selected LPD Protocol. I inserted the IP address copied from my network settings (above) in the address bar. In the Queue bar I typed in the name of the printer 'Apple LaserWriter 16/600 PS'.
-Again in the Printer Browser box I gave the printer a name and location. Finally, in the 'print using' box I selected Apple and then chose the model from the drop down list. 'Apple LaserWriter 16/600 PS fax v.2014.016'
-I got a dialogue box that asked about other installable features - clicked ok.
-when I tried to print a Word document, the Apple LaserWriter driver opened up and appeared in my dock and then I got an immediate error saying "network host ---.---.--.--- is busy, down, or unreachable..."
-I tried to repair permissions, but it did not resolve my issue.
-I noticed that even after adding the 16/600, it did not show up as a bonjour printer, but remained visible as a printer in my list (although grayed out).
I did some troubleshooting and the best I could find as a close match for my problem was that perhaps I had entered the name incorrectly in the Queue box...? If anyone knows how to find the appropriate name to insert I would sure appreciate knowing.
Finally - you should probably know that I received this printer from someone else. I guess I'm wondering if I need to be resetting network settings on the printer somehow? The test page lists the following:
    Ethernet (Address: 08:00:07:84:78:e9)
    EtherTalk: PostScript
    NetWare: AutoSelect
    TCP/IP: AutoSelect
    IP address: 0.0.0.0
And - now finally, to answer your questions (the best I can, that is)
I did connect the yellow network cable directly into my laptop (right side, 4th input, counting away from me). I have a portable internet modem that plugs into my wall (for power) and then has a cable (Ethernet?) that goes into my Airport Express (LAN port?). I have no other router and there are no other inputs or outputs on my modem. My Airport Express has only one input for the modem, one mini input for airtunes, and one usb input (in which I have a cable connecting to my other laser printer (now working wirelessly via Airport Express!!)
Should I have these cables hooked up differently?
What is a Phonenet adaptor? My internet is provided via a cable service (not DSL). It is wireless and portable - I can take it to any major city in Canada and it works as long as it is plugged into a power source and near a window.
I really appreciate any help you can offer. At this point I must have spent the better part of almost two weeks trying to get these older laser printers up and running.
    Thank you again.

  • Use airport express wireless printing with time capsule

I want to add airport express to my time capsule network to take advantage of wireless printing. I have set my AE to join my existing wireless network and connected my printer to the USB port. I logged into AE through Airport Utility and clicked on the printer pane. It shows my usb printer is connected to the AE. Then I went to system preferences to set my print and fax settings to share over network.
I thought this is correct, but when I click print it tells me the printer is offline. Am I missing a step? I would connect the printer to my time capsule but I need my printer in a different part of the house. Thanks for you help!!

You have your printer installed at two different locations. To confirm, open System Preferences and then click Print & Fax.
You should see your printer listed twice in the printer list on the left.
One is your printing installed at your computer and the other is your printer installed at the AirPort Express.
When you open a document to print, you have to choose the printer that you want to use. You may still be choosing the printer at your computer. Look for the printer at the Express. If you intend to use the printer at the Express most of the time, you might want to make that your default printer so you don't have to select a device each time you print.
For more info on printing issues, see the Apple Printer Troubleshooting Guide.
Keep in mind that not all printers are compatible, even though they may appear connected to your device. If you work your way through the guide and still cannot print, then that's likely the explanation.

  • Can I use Ethernet for Internet connection and Airport express for printer

How / can I use Ethernet for Internet connection and use an airport express to set up wifi for printer and Apple TV?
    Macbook Pro. OS X 10.9.4

I've never tried it, so I don't know what the results will be.
However, you can move Ethernet to the top of the Services list in Network System Prefs which will cause it to be the Internet source. There is a command in the gear menu to set the Service order.  However, after thinking about it, if there isn't an internet connection via Wi-Fi, it might automatically drop down to the Ethernet connection.
Then, you can set up your Wi-Fi so that it doesn't connect to the Internet, as Linc stated. How to do that would be dependent on the Router.

  • Setup airport express for radio

Is it possible to listen to the internet radio by using airport express and some airply speakers? So, not listen through Itunes but a radiostream send by the internet.
If not, how can I hear internetradio to external speakers and using my Imac. I'm very new with Apple and I want to use the Imac also as a radio.

  • Airport Express USB Printer Visible, but Not Printing

I've connected my printer (HPc7260) to my Airport Express. It is visible on the network. But print jobs get stopped and the print utility says the printer is offline.
    Any thoughts?
+This question is also posted in follow up to a thread I started earlier, which was answered helpfully by Duane (thread: How Setup Airport Express for Wireless Printing to HP Photosmart C7280) Sorry for redundancy and clutter. I hadn't followed up on the old thread for a few days. Thought it might not get another response.+

    Solved.
A restart, followed by reselecting the printer in the print dialog got the job done.

I have restarted all units, disconnected and reconnected

    Hi ryanfromstockbridge,
I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on exactly what you are seeing when you try to add the printer or print to the printer. If you continue to have issues printing to this wireless printer, you may find the information and troubleshooting steps outlined in the following articles helpful:

  • Using an aiport express + airport extreme for printing.

I have an airport extreme to which I connect a lexmark color laser printer. Everything works well. I just moved and am now using DSL. There is no phone jack in the room where I want to put my printer. Can I use the airport extreme for my wireless internet through my dsl phone line and then use an airport express to hook up my printer and print wirelessly? Can I use a second airport express for a second printer which will go in yet a different place?

Another option would be to setup the Express units as clients on your Airport network especially if you don't need to extend your network.
You will still be able to print, but avoid the bandwidth hit that using WDS (extending the network) has.

  • Using Airport Express for a printer

I have placed my laser printer on our main floor since that is where I am most and I was unable to connect wirelessly using my desktop PC (not Mac) through the network in our basement. I was told I could do it by getting the Airport Express. However, it appears that I need to have the ethernet of the network plugged into the Airport Express to print to it. I do not have internet on the main floor. I was hoping to basically use the Airport Express directly to the printer.
ie. Mac Laptop anywhere in house. Airport Express plugged into power supply with usb from printer to Airport Express. Print from my Mac Laptop or my PC laptop or even my PC desktop in the basement.
Is there a way to extend the network, maybe?
    Does this not work???

Okay.... so, I got my MacBook to connect to the printer no problem once I figured out one thing.
But, I have installed Airport Utility on my Dell PC. I installed Bonjour, but, through all the "Help" items, it isn't real clear how I am supposed to add the printer. I say "search for printer", but it doesn't show. The help just indicates install Bonjour and follow the instructions on how to connect to the computer, but after Bonjour was installed, all it said as far as I knew was it was installed. I tried accessing the install again to go through the process but was unable to ... I think the install file was deleted and now, when I try to reinstall the whole airport utility, it is denied since I have a newer version of airport utility installed (I updated).
Please help.... I even checked to see if Port 5353 was open, and Bonjour already did it for me.
Airport Utility sees the airport from my PC, and it lists the printer I had "installed" while on my Mac, but, I can't seem to "find" it when I browse for the printer under the add printers.

  • Airport Express not working with printer on Windows, works fine on Macbook

I have an airport express that is connected to my Brother laser printer. I installed the software and it works and prints fine on my macbook pro.
I tried to also set it up using my Dell running Windows XP SP2, but after using the instructions, it looked like it set up fine and the printer is recognized, but when I try and print, it just gives me an error message that that printer is "busy or unable to print".
    Any ideas?

Is there another solution to this problem? I have two PCs running WinXP and can not print with either one of them through Airport Express. Printing works fine with MacBook. I have Bonjour on both PCs and have run the setup wizard. The printer seems to be connecting and then hangs up on "communicating with printer."
