Setup DNS in Snow Leopard HELP!!!!!!!

I would like to have step by step instructions on setting up DNS in Snow Leopard.
Now I can setup DNS in Leopard Server with my eye's closed, but SLS is giving me
trouble.
The only service I have running at present is DNS.
The problem is SLS what to enter in the nameservers zone field.
I am using readsrv for the server name, when setup asks for a dns name I entered macbook.com
So the final FQDNS should read readsrv.macbook.com.
Also how does the Reverse DNS setup in SLS ???
Leopard Server would automatically create this field, but I do not see this in SLS DNS Settings.
I get this error in terminal.
macbook:~ sls$ sudo changeip -checkhostname
Primary address = 192.168.1.30
Current HostName = macbook.com
The DNS hostname is not available, please repair DNS and re-run this tool.
Thank you all in advance, please help me out.

Here, you'll want to get a registered domain or use something severely unlikely to get issued as a real domain (host.mikedarland or some other such domain), unless you're tied in with the folks that have the macbook.com domain registered. Folks are activating new top-level domains (TLDs) like .travel. I'll refer to the domain and the zone example.com here, as this is an RFC-preferred domain name for (duh) an example domain.
Get a good and restorable backup of your disk before you start.
Launch Server Admin.
Select the target server, select DNS, stop DNS.
Select Settings.
Select the forwarding server(s) as your upstream ISP DNS server(s).
Select Zones.
Clean out all of the zones you see there.
Add a forward primary zone for example.com. (note that trailing dot), and select the DNS server for that zone as 192.168.1.30 or whatever the address of your host. (And as an aside, I'd get out of 192.168.0.0/16 just as soon as I could manage it, as that messes up VPN routing if/when you get there.)
You'll get a reverse zone created gratis.
Add an A record for hostnames; here using "hostname".
For testing: aim one of your clients at the DNS server at 192.168.1.30 (or whatever the IP address) via explicit selection in Network Preferences or such. Aim dig hostname.example.com, and (presuming that kicks back an address), aim a dig -x w.y.y.z query to test the reverse translation.
After you have it all working, aim your clients at the box via explicit specification for via DHCP setting. Do not reference the ISP settings directly.

  • Configure DNS on Snow Leopard Server for Web Hosting

    Hi Everyone,
    I put together an article on my blog about Snow Leopard DNS setup for web hosting. http://www.mkahn.com/?p=279
    I'll be revising it over the next few weeks to make it more informative based around feedback. Let me know if you have any questions or trouble setting up DNS on Snow Leopard Server for web hosting.

    Thanks for your replies. I realize I'm not making clear the way this network is configured . Also, the only services running on the Snow Leopard server are (at this time):
    dhcpd - in the 10.136.31.x range;
    dns - same as before;
    planned to add are:
    Open Directory (for network logins)
    Software update;
    Web (only on the 10.136.31.x Ethernet);
    mySQL (localhost only - for moodle);
    NAT is not set up on the Snow Leopard server itself. We have an outside router, a Cisco 2811. This router provides routing for both the public IP range, and the NAT range is configured in this router. The forwarding dns is located in LR and Fayetteville. So what I need is dns on Snow Leopard to forward outside queries to the state DNS servers, and resolve the local NAT IP only for Open Directory and a set of Snow Leopard clients.
    Is this going to be possible?

  • Configure DNS on Snow Leopard for private NAT with Open Directory

    I am needing to set up DNS on Snow Leopard server 10.6.4 for use with Snow Leopard clients only. On the server, I have two IPs, one public connections outside the network, and one private within the NAT range. DNS was not originally set up on the server, but Open Directory was (sort of). I've demoted the server from OD master to stand alone, but still can't get this to work.
    This server is only for setting up and using Open Directory + NetInstall services inside the network. In effect, it isn't serving web pages and isn't registered with our upstream DNS. What I am assigned to do is get Open Directory to set up user profiles and network shares and home directories. So, what I need is this -
    a basic DNS config I can do in Server Admin that will set up DNS to resolve to the local server NAT IP for Open Directory purposes;
    and provide DNS for outside the OS X server for the specified Snow Leopard clients.
    DHCP is running (but the clients were configured with static IPs in the NAT range). This serves as the DHCP server for the entire network (Windows + Mac clients that aren't in the static NAT range).

    Thanks for your replies. I realize I'm not making clear the way this network is configured . Also, the only services running on the Snow Leopard server are (at this time):

  • Audio Midi Setup, multichannel speakers, Snow Leopard & possible bug

    I scoured this forum as well as the usual places across the net and haven't seen any mention of this issue, thought I'd post it here and see if anyone else has had this issue. I'm having a problem with a fresh install of 10.6.2 that I detailed in a bug report to Apple. Here's what I sent them:
    "I have a firewire audio interface I use successfully with Logic Pro/Quicktime Pro 7/Finder in a multichannel (5.1) configuration for scoring and post, which works fine in 10.5.8. I can play multichannel (interleaved) 5.1 files bounced out of Logic Pro in Quicktime Pro and from within the Finder using QuickLook, and all channels play out of the speakers (which is of course configured properly in both Audio Midi Setup and Logic Pro).
    In the latest version of Snow Leopard however, even though multichannel audio works fine in Logic Pro (probably because it has its own multichannel speaker config in Logic's audio preferences), this same hardware setup does not work outside of Logic. Multichannel audio files only play out of the left & right channels (C/LFE/Ls/Rs are summed). I believe the problem is Audio Midi Setup. Even though I enable the correct stream and choose the correct speakers from with "speaker configuration," and even though the test tone buttons work over the appropriate speakers in that window, after I hit "apply," when playing multichannel audio files in QT7 or via Quicklook in the Finder, the problem persists (summing all channels to L & R speakers).
    Furthermore, when I click "Done" in the speaker config window and quit Audio Midi Setup and re-open it, the speaker configuration window reveals that my multichannel setup has reverted to Audio Midi Setup's intial state: a 2 channel (stereo) setup. I've done this at least ten times, as well as having deleted the AMS prefs and launched the utility in 32-bit mode with no success."
    Has anyone else with a multi-speaker setup had any problems with AMS initializing their speaker configuration, and just plain not working?

    I don't know if this will help you, but I once had a problem with Audio Midi Setup forgetting its settings - I found that the settings were only securely stored if I made the changes while logged on as an administrator.

  • How do I change my server name (DNS) in Snow Leopard 10.6. ?

    I stupidly set my server name to yahoo.com when installing Snow Leopard, and now I cannot get into the real Yahoo. When I try to go to yahoo's site from any browser (Safari/Firefox/Chrome) it cannot find the site (I think it is resolving to my server name). Thanks in advance for any help.

    Thank you. I solved my problem by using OPEN DNS, which gave me instructions as follows:
    Apple menu;
    System Preferences;
    Click Network;
    Select 1st connection (that I simply deleted--127.something);
    Click Advanced;
    Select DNS tab;
    Add the OPENDNS IP addresses using the + sign at bottom (208.67.220.220 and 208.67.222.222);
    Click Apply.

  • Will reinstall of Snow Leopard help iMac stop freezing?

    Hello,
    I've been having problems with my Mac freezing.  I've tried all kinds of things (verify and repair permissions and disk etc, make sure enough free space, as well as checking fans, disk utility etc) and the problem persists.  It's a 24inch iMac that I bought in late 2008 and the problems have been  ongoing intermittently for  months now.  Basically what will happen is  that I’ll be using it when it will suddenly freeze and the screen goes  blank.  The only thing that works then is to restart by holding down the  power button on the back to turn it off and then on again.  I use it  most often for internet (I use firefox) but the issue has happened when  doing other things too, so I don’t think it’s related to any particular  programme.
    I took it into the genius bar and after checking the disks and finding no problem their advice was to reinstall snow leopard.  I was the last appointment of the day before a long weekend and the guy was helpful but fairly rushed.  The thing is that I had this problem with leopard as well before upgrading to snow leopard, so I can't see how it's related to snow leopard.  So, is reinstalling snow leopard likely to help?  Would it be easier to upgrade now to Mountain Lion instead and see if that helps?
    Any suggestions gratefully accepted and please let me know if there's other information that you would need to know in order to provide any suggestions.
    Thanks so much in advance
    Model Name: iMac
    Model Identifier: iMac8,1
    L2 Cache: 6

    I have the same model. What I suggest you try next for this problem:
    1. Run the Apple Hardware Test. It can't detect all hardware problems, especially intermittent ones like you might be having, but it is still a good first step.
    2. Reset the SMC. I'm not sure why but this has fixed some odd problems I have had in the past with my 2008 iMac.
    3. If this doesn't help, try running for a while without any peripherals attached to your iMac besides the keyboard & mouse. If you don't see any freezing problems, try reattaching your other peripherals one by one & running that configuration long enough to see if one of them is causing your problems.
    4. If none of this helps, go ahead & reinstall Snow Leopard, making sure you run Software Update afterwards to update it to the latest version. The Snow Leopard installer isn't like earlier OS installers. To reinstall the system just run it & accept the defaults. It won't write over or alter your user data or create any "Previous System" folder stuff, so it is a fairly painless procedure. It even performs the equivalent of Disk Utility's verify disk step, so you don't have to do that beforehand.
    5. If none of this helps, reply to this topic & we can suggest other things to try.

  • Re-Installing Leopard from Snow Leopard HELP!!!

    Hey guys, I'm sure this is a duplicate post, but i have looked for ages.
    Basically, i need to re-insall Leopard from Snow Leopard on my new 17 MBP.
    I have the 10.5 DVD, but when i try to run it, the computer restarts and then just sticks in a loop of restarting pretty much straight after the startup chime. I really need to go back to leopard due to software reasons until 10.6 is fixed. I also dont have a time machine backup
    Please help!
    Thanks a lot.
    Alex

    I assume that you are trying to start from the DVD, right. Does the disk show up and run if you start up to your internal? If so, then you could at least do and Archive and Install (A&I) back to Leo.
    A&I is a good play, under your current circumstances, given that you are not currently able to do an erase and install. Note that Apple doesn't recommend going backwards this far (i.e., going back beyond the current major version, say, 10.6.2.x back to 10.6.1.x) via A&I. But, regardless it is a way to get back to Leo and to pave the way for doing an E&I of Leo in the future assuming your E&I fails to produce an acceptable installation.
    Note that if you go backwards, then you will not be able to preserve user and network settings--which may be a good thing. Fortunately, there is a way to extract anything needed from a prior user home folder. [Here is the explanation|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2196].
    Even though you don't want Sno any more, you need to have a bootable clone of your Sno installation on an external for fail save purposes and data backup. Also, I would repair disk and permissions before archiving and installing and unplug all peripherals during installation, but not your Ethernet connection if you have one.

  • Re-Installing Snow leopard - help please

    I bought my MacBook Pro with leopard and later upgraded to SnowLeopard. So I have a Leopard disk and a Snow Leopard disk. I want to completely re-install the system to start fresh, with a time machine backup, so I figured the best way was to erase the drive with disk utility on the startup disk and re-install OSX(unless anyone has a better idea)
    But the question I have is, do I have to install Leopard again and then upgrade to snow leopard, or can I start straight from the leopard upgrade disk?
    Thank you so much for any help!

    just what do you mean by "system to start fresh, with a time machine backup"?

    you haven't explained why you want to do this. a better idea might be not to reinstall at all.
    But the question I have is, do I have to install Leopard again and then upgrade to snow leopard, or can I start straight from the leopard upgrade disk?
    you don't have to install leopard first. but it's far from clear that you need to reinstall at all.

  • ITunes 9 on Snow Leopard, HELP!

    I have a brand spanking new MacBook (delivered about 3 days ago). A fresh install of Snow Leopard, iTunes 8.2 was working perfectly. Since updating to iTunes 9 I cannot use iTunes at all. I start the program and the dock icon bounces for what feels like an eternity, the activity monitor shows that iTunes is using approx. 90% CPU and around 800-900mb of real memory. It also frequently switches between not responding and showing the itunes instance as normal in the activity monitor. I am extremely displeased with this, as no solution seems to work so far. I've used a mac for a while now and made sure to repair disk permissions and restart etc, the usual suspects didn't help me. I finally had enough and tried to downgrade to iTunes 8.2 (following the instructions in the apple KB) but now that follows the same pattern as iTunes 9 regarding memory and CPU usage and finally about 10 minutes after clicking the dock icon the message "Unable to use iTunes library because it was created by a newer version of iTunes" appears.
    Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

    You can try following these instructions to remove version 9:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1224
    The install of 9 seemed to go fine for me, but the program crashes every time I connect my phone. I followed those instructions to remove iTunes. I reinstalled 8 from my Snow Leopard CD, but it won't even open. 8 worked fine before the upgrade to 9.

  • Flash CS4 crashing with Snow Leopard - help!!

    I just installed Snow Leopard and now my Flash CS4 will not stay open. It crashes. All software updates are up to date. Any suggestions. please help. I have Flash work to do

    I found the fix.
    It's a pain. It's a font thing issue. Move all your fonts to your desktop or some external drive. Launch Flash and it should work. Now, if you want your fonts put them back but do only a little at a time, quiting and relaunching Flash every time you put fonts back to find the font that's causing the problem.
    When you find the font that causes the issue, trash it.

  • Macbook Pro - Lion - Snow Leopard - help please!

    Hi there.
    I've just bought a second-hand Macbook Pro through ebay which has come with Lion pre-installed. I keep being prompted to do a software update but can't do this as (my understanding is) the Lion software belongs to the previous owner and not the computer itself. The apple ID associated with lion is not mine, and I do not know the previous owners password.
    I would like to do a clean install anyway to make sure I erase all the previous owners data and assumed I could do this by inserting my RETAIL copy of snow leopard (which I used to upgrade my original Macbook) into the new macbook pro, pressing C on start-up and then doing erase and install. This would then allow me to upgrade my Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion via the app store and everything would properly assign over to me, I would legitimately own the software etc etc and all would be fine.
    However, the Macbook seems to not like the Snow Leopard disc and on some further investigation it seems I can't 'downgrade' the software (even though I want to put it straight back up again). So my question is, what do I do now?! I'm assuming there is a way around this and someone helpful and clever will know what to do :-)
    Thanks in advance :-)

    As the MacBook Pro you have bought came with OS X Lion, you can't install any older operating system because its hardware is not supported. That's the reason why you can't install Mac OS X Snow Leopard.
    What you have to do is to contact with Apple in order to deauthorize the Mac and all its software (OS X, iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand) from the old owner's Apple ID > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57 First try to do it, and if Apple tells you that the old owner has to do it, contact with him/her.
    Near all people who sell their old Mac with OS X Lion or Mountain Lion preinstalled do the same error, and it's serious: if the hard drive gets damaged, for example, you won't be able to reinstall OS X, so you can't do anything

  • Yahoo Finance - Interactive Charts problems with Snow Leopard - help?

    Hi,
    I'm used to using Yahoo Finance and chart tracking of multiple stocks with their interactive chart. Now it seems stuck: thus, I can't add multipe indexes or other stocks to compare it too. (firefox and safari)
    Less of an issue, the cursor when the "Compare to:" box pops up is under each stock/index you want to compare to; say appl to palm or rimm (no comparison of course though!!) (firefox and safari same problem)
    any ideas? I feel like the top issue was only one when I installed snow leopard
    many thanks

    I have the same problem. I thought upgrading to Snow Leopard might help, but no. I've now seen the problem on various Macs, with Firefox and Safari. Several months ago, or longer, it stopped working. Once in a while it works once or twice. I had used it extensively for several years. Some sort of change was made, at Yahoo and/or Apple, and now it's broken. I also have the issue with the cursor hidden underneath the box.

  • Boot Camp Snow leopard Help! Please answer!

    I want to run Win 7 through Boot camp. I have to back up my drive and reformat my hard drive. I have Snow Leopard installed. But the installation disk for my mac is Leopard. Will I lose Snow Leopard when i reformat?

    HI Michael,
    If you reformat the drive before using BootCamp you will have to reinstall Snow Leopard on the Mac OS X partition.
    Reformatting completely erases the hard disk.
    I highly recommend you read the BootCamp Setup and Installation Guide before you do anything.
    *Make sure and back up all important data first before reformatting the hard drive.*

  • CC and Snow Leopard (help)

    Hello,
    I have an older MacBook and the newest OS it can run is Snow Leopard (installed). I've subscribed to Creative Cloud, but I cannot install several of the applications (ex: Lightroom, After Effects). Is there a way I can download older versions that will run on 10.6.8? I've downloaded the trial of Lightroom 4, but don't have a serial # for it. Since I'm paying for CC is there a way around that?
    Thanks for your help~

    All apps that were included in the Master Collection of CS6 should work on OSX 10.6.8.
    And you should have access to them as part of your CC subscription.
    Alternatively buy a new computer with OSX 10.7 or above.
    Or switch to a computer with Windows 7.
    Ah. You could use Bootcamp on your machine and buy MS Windows 7 and install it there.
    Run the CC software from that partition…
    But maybe the performance will be not what you want.
