Setup instructions for airport extreme needed

Can anyone please suggest some good instruction sites or downloadable files for the airport extreme?
I tried to install one previously and it didn't work and I returned it, but I would like to try again.
I have a 2008 mac pro on ethernet, an xbox on ethernet and a 2007 mbp and two 2009 mbps plus a 3g iphone and a windows xp pc that I can currently use on my Belkin pre-N router with Virgin internet.
The pc has a Belkin usb N adapter for its connectivity.
The system works pretty well but I was wondering if I would get better speed or coverage from an airport extreme.
Two concerns that I have are that the airport extreme seems to be several years old now (2007?) and I am wondering if it is due for an update soon?
Also, to get faster speeds or less interference, will I be able to set the airport extreme to the 5 ghz band and still have connections to all my current hardware?
Thanks for any advice.

Try this:

That's hard to say. Sometimes speed and/or coverage on the 5 GHz band can be worse than on the 2.4 GHz band, depending on several factors.

According to Mactracker version 5.2.1 (not the latest version), the newest AirPort Extreme was released in October 2009.

The newest AirPort Extreme can use the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz bands at the same time.

Does the latest airport extreme need to have a static ip from my ISP in order to create the "guest account" separate from the private account?

You can reserve an IP address for any device you want.
Hard Drive > Applicatons > Utilities > AirPort Utility > Manual Setup.
Click the Internet Icon, then click the DHCP tab. Under DHCP Reservations, Click the + (Plus) button and type in the IP address of the device that you need and add a description of the device.

  • DNS settings for Airport Extreme Base Station

This month's MacWorld suggests that changing the DNS setting of the wireless device might increase the speed of the connection. What setting should my Airport Extreme Base Station use.
The Computer system says 10.0.1.1 and it works. When I entered the numbers they suggested I get no connection.
    Any suggestions?

To change DNS setup on the Airport you need to put in the DNS change on the Internet tab. The Airport will always place itself as the main DNS server to the network clients that connect by DHCP, unless you set the Airport to static IP.. and it will use your ISP DNS server by default.. you can change them if you want. Just type in the new DNS you want to use.

In most cases this is really so minimal as to be insignificant. The airport should cache the regularly used DNS addresses and you can test it by ping to your local DNS or the DNS recommended by MacWorld??.. but honestly a few ms is not going to change the world. To the clients the local network addressing should be still using the Airport as the main DNS.. you can setup manually in each device a different DNS but that can give local network issues as it then has to find local clients by broadcast.
I have a complex dns setup for other reasons.. getting past geolocks..
If I ping my local ISP dns I get

It is very obvious the best ping is the ISP dns because the route path is shorter..
Google is very good but still takes longer and of course dns in another country is much worse.

  • Stand for AirPort Extreme

I plan to use an AirPort Extreme to run a wireless setup at a few small traveling trade shows.  I need to find a stand to elevate the AP maybe 10-20 feet off the ground to help signal stregth across the room.  Does anyone have suggestions on what would work well for this?

Thanks for the advice.  I like the suggestion to extend the network using two AirPorts.  I am confused about how to set it up.  I am setting up a wireless network in a conference room that is about 5200 square feet.  Initially, I was going to setup just one Airport Extreme, but I think I will do two now.  I plan to connect both APs to a single switch.  It looks like extending the network range involves hooking one Airport into another - like daisy chaining them, I guess.  Since I am going from one switch out to the two, should I just set them up independently and use the same network name (not choose extend the network on either setup)?  I want to create a single wireless network so that clients can move from device to device with no interruption.  Since both devices will probably be close enough that the wireless spectrum overlaps, should I manually set the radio channels on both or just left them both at automatic?  Thanks for any advice on how to set this up properly.

  • Is the maximum number of users for Airport Extreme per device, i.e. 2 AEBS = 100 users, one AEBS extending the other on the same wireless network?

Is the maximum number of users for Airport Extreme per device, i.e. 2 AEBS = 100 users, one AEBS extending the other on the same wireless network?

50 users per device, assuming that the "main" router is setup to deliver an adequate number of network IP addresses for all devices.
2 AEBS = 100 users, but that is really more of a theoretical max.
If you really need 100 connections, it would be much better to use 3 AEBS to spread things out.

where do I download drivers for airport extreme.....my iPad can not be set up by he current software

I have an airport extreme with updated software(latest) and I setup an Ipad 3 on it with ios6(wirelessly). You can access the airport to update it with the utitlity app on an ios device, mac, or pc. I dont think it has anything to do with the airport software. Did you try rebooting the airport, then trying again?
Like james said, maybe more detail would help someone help you.

Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and download Mavericks from the Mac App Store.

Why can't I install software for AirPort Extreme 802.11n while running Mountain Lion OSX?  The installation CD simply says that the software can't be installed while running this OSX.

Mountain Lion already has the most recent, updated version of AirPort Utility installed on your Mac. The version on your CD is out of date, so you can trash the CD.
Look in Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility.

  • Setup Guest Network with OS X Server and Airport Extreme - NEED HELP!

    Hi All,
So I have a small business with a Mac Mini Server (10.6.5) and an Airport Extreme. The Airport is handling the routing and DHCP duties, while the Server is handling the DNS. The Airport is pointed to pull DNS from the Server. All internal systems work great accessing the internet and folders on the Server.
I need to setup a Guest network for internet access, so I turned this function on in the Airport Extreme. It sets up fine, but if you connect to that new Guest Network the system hangs trying to open a web page. My thinking is since the Server is the one handling the DNS it is not working for Guest computers since they are not part of our internal network. At least that is my theory, I could be wrong.
With this type of setup what do I need to modify to get this working? Anyone have any ideas?

After trying for days to figure this out I was finally able to get a working solution and I now have my APE providing a guest and main network while using my lion server as the Dsn server for the main network.
The setup is a bit of a hack and does require you to have at least two devices with staticly assigned ip information on the main network but it does allow you to serve dhcp for both networks from the server and make some services available to the guest network such as iTunes remote for parties.
    1) delete your custom Dns entries from the Internet settings in the APE and set two dhcp reservations for .2 and .3 (in this case my Mac mini server and my airport express)
    2) reduce the dhcp range to only have 2 available IPs (10.0.1.2-10.0.1.3) and save settings
    3) on a computer connected to the main network install wireshark and begin sniffing for packets. Connect at least one device to your guest network and look for any packets that have an ip from your guest network (usually 172.16.42.x) once you capture one of these packets expand the vlan information. This should list a vlan ID ( in my case this was 1003. I would suspect this is universal but do not know)
    4) on your server open network preferences, click the gear at the bottom and click "manage virtual interfaces", add a vlan that matches the vlan ID from above. Click ok and apply your settings. The vlan interface should get an ip in the guest network range from your APE.
    * if you are running lion you will need to install server admin tools before proceeding*
    5) open server admin and add the dhcp service. Create an entry for your primary network (ex: 10.0.1.x) make the dhcp range one higher than the settings in step 2 ( ie: 10.0.1.4 to 10.0.1.253) assign this to the physical interface. Make sure this entry has your internal DNA servers
    6) add another entry for the guest networks ip range (ex: 172.16.42.x) again set it one ip higher than step 2 ( 172.16.42.4 to 172.16.42.253) save and activate both ranges. Assign this range to the vlan interface. Make sure this entry either contains your isps dns servers or another public dns server. Turn on dhcp.
Because you have now assigned the only two addresses in the APEs pool for your primary network to static entries there will not be any addresses to assign and the APE will not respond to requests. This will allow your server to pick up the work of assigning IPs. As for your guest network, the APE will assign IPs for two host and then stop. Your clients may either get an IP from the APE or the osx server so both should have the same info. Just make sure the two static clients on your main network have the local DNA servers entered manually.

  • Airport Utility for my Airport Extreme needs to be changed to a different computer, because the current computer is down permanently.. How do I do this?  Do I have to reset the Airport Extreme and start from scratch?

The computer (Win XP) on which the Airport Utility has been set up for the past few years is no longer accessible, so I need to set it up on a different computer. Can I do that with my exisitng wireless network, or will I have to set up a new network from scratch, once I have installed Airport Utility on the new machine?

You can install AirPort Utility on either a Mac or PC, but there would be no reason to make any changes to your existing configuration on the AirPort Extreme unless you need to do so.

    Hello everybody:
I want to flash my Airport Extreme Model A1034(M8799LL/A)with the latest firmware available..
    My Airport have a internal modem , 1 Wan , 1 Ethernet & 1 USB ports
I checked some firmware updates, but I am not sure what is the correct update ..
I don't want to ruin my Airport for flashing the Airport with the wrong update ..
I only have Windows Xp computers ,, I need a Mac to do it ?
Please somebody help me to find the update ,,
    Thanks in advance ,,

Do you know if this is still the case? (Version 5.7 is still the latest available for the 802.11g version of the AirPort Extreme Base Station).
I'm a little confused after the release of AirPort Base Station Update 2007-002 for Windows:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airportbasestationupdate2007002forwindows .html
It clearly states that "AirPort Utility v5.2.1 software supports the AirPort Extreme Base Station with 802.11n, AirPort Extreme Base Station and AirPort Express Base Station." But then if you read the System Requirements it says that you need:
    * Windows XP with Service Pack 2
    * Windows Vista
    * AirPort Utility 5.0 or later
    * AirPort Extreme Base Station with *802.11n*
So what is the latest version for the 802.11g version of the AirPort Extreme Base Station?
    Thanks
