Setup mac/linux?

Ok, I recently received a new copy of Linux openSUSE 11.2 and I want to put it on my eMac. Its running Mac OS X 10.4.11, I only want it to be a SECONDARY OS. I know it is possible, I've tried booting it in Safe mode, I've tried booting it from disc ( via holding "c" as it starts up ), I've tried a boot by holding CMD, Option, Shift, Delete, it didn't work either. Please help me out, I've even tried finding an ISO for it, which I believe is near impossible, I've tried to do this for weeks now. I already lost all my data from a screwed up update, now this, MAC IS SUPPOSED TO BE BETTER THAN WINDOWS, now they are competing. I'm debating on buying a PC, and just having Linux as the BASE OS. Please help me out

re-partition harddrive
While sparsely documented 10.4.11 contains terminal commands to re-partition a hard drive with out destroying the data on it. This was introduced as part of the boot camp effort.

How do you setup GNU/Linux on an iMac apple computer
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMac_G4
    with Panther OS X 10.3.9
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OSX10.3 ?...

There is a Ubuntu 10.4 version for Mac with PPC architecture; not sure
how that would work in the computer you may consider running it in.
Some leads on that kind of discussion can be found by using a Google
search, and the words: *ubuntu for PPC G4 Mac* + read through results.
Or choose to search using these terms: *Open Source Linux PPC G4 Mac*
A few results point back to Apple Discussions, where there were inquiries.
Note the version of a Linux-type of OS, compatible with Mac PPC hardware,
on the following page-link: *• Ubuntu 10.0.4 LTS (Lucid Lynx)*
    http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/10.04/release/
{You would have to put the image, as downloaded from such a site, on a CD
    for use as an Installer; then follow any instructions as available to install it.}
An old page (from 2007?) with some details, some not up-to-date,
may be of help to a limited degree, from here: Ubuntu PPC wiki
    https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCFAQ#Is%20Ubuntu%20supported%20on%20PowerPC?
    Or: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCFAQ
See their home page to look for other information on the site: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/
These wiki groups are like communities, with rules & other such considerations; you
may be able to also find +Open Source+ sites with information and builds of suitable
Linux versions capable of running well in an older PPC Mac. There are newer ones
that would have no problem on a newer Intel-based Mac, of course.
    • Mac Linux Links: (perhaps too dated)
    http://lowendmac.com/linux/index.shtml
    • Comparison of Linux distributions:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparisonof_Linuxdistributions
Hardware support in the older PPC G4 Mac computer should be considered, in order
to have the better experience possible with the Linux-based OS; and some specs in
an old Mac may not be ideal. The graphics processor unit and amount of dedicated
RAM for the graphics alone, could make a difference; depending on what you had in
mind when running a Linux-based OS in a PPC Mac. So consider hardware specs.
Some hardware in the computer may or may not be supported by the Software; and
then, there may be some problems implementing a Linux OS version in your Mac.
If you had an old Mac Mini (PPC or early Intel) & considered running Linux, there's
a page of general ideas worth a peek: http://sowerbutts.com/linux-mac-mini/
You may not have enough room on the existing internal hard disk drive inside the
iMac G4, for a complete OS X 10.3.9 or Later OS X, and a partition for Linux in it.
And, you may find through reading further, if you need to (or don't) start fresh and
have a partition for each different OS, or not. For organizational purposes and ease
of removing one system or the other, a partitioned hard disk drive may be best.
There probably is a way to have Linux on an external bootable hard disk drive; &
that would have to be compatible with the Mac hardware requirements to be seen
and used by the computer, and also the ability to restart from Linux into Mac OS X
would have to exist in the system software. Hopefully without incident.
You will have some degree of a learning curve in this matter, from reading up on
the details of any viable Linux versions, through the ones likely to work in your
old PPC G4 Mac, and then if there are more than two or three good ones, of those
what one would be most likely to be worth the additional effort to attempt to use in it.
Depending on the version and specifications of your iMac G4 computer, there could
be different versions of linux systems capable of running it. However, some items
may not be supported which you would need to have working, such as wi-fi internet
and sleep mode, etc; among others. Searching the net does bring up more info.
{You may find, that going to OS X 10.4.11 would be more worth the effort, in that
most everything would 'just work' and you can still find many good software bits
and some fine freeware or low cost shareware to run on it. Linux versions vary
    so much on what they can and cannot do, I would not recommend running it.}
Since I am not an expert in the matter, hopefully someone with a experimental time
and results in a similar vintage Mac as yours will reply and give you insightful info.
    Good luck & happy computing!

Lack of Mac & Linux Support Hurting Javafx 2.0 Early Adoption and traction.
Oracle needs to come out with a Mac & Linux Beta built, or let developers know the real story behind Mac OS and Javafx 2.0.

I too would like to at least be able to try the Mac/Linux ports, even knowing that they are behind the Windows version. But just knowing that Oracle is committed to them is enough to ease any nervous feeling that I'm choosing the wrong tech.
I have no problems with the fact that Oracle is concentrating on Windows first. It makes sense. If you have to pick one platform to focus on while you are getting the kinks out, it makes sense for it to be the most popular platform. That's Windows. But there mustn't be too long of a wait for the others. (E.g. if they were in a public beta stage when the Windows version is at final release, that would help boost confidence in the platform.)
So long as they don't make the same mistakes that were made with Swing, where there are too many assumptions that all platforms work the same - so things like Mac's screen menu bar had to be fit in after the fact by Apple using awkward hacks. (I notice that now even popular Linux distros (Ubuntu) are using the screen menu bar concept, though they have managed to fit that into the window manager in such a way that it didn't seem to cause much problems.)

    Hello Partii,
It sounds like you may use a POP account for your email.  With a POP account, email applications like Mail and Outlook can remove emails from the server, so when another device tries to check the server for new emails, it doesn't see any.
You may need to adjust settings in Outlook so that the emails are not removed from the server when downloaded.  I found an article with more information:
When using a POP email account with multiple devices, email messages may only appear on the first device that receives them. This occurs when an email client is configured to automatically remove email from the server once an email client has received it. You can configure your email client (or clients) either to keep a copy of the email on the server, remove it after a certain number of days have passed, or keep it until you move it from your Inbox.
I recommend reviewing the full article for steps on adjusting these settings; you can find the full article here:
Using a POP account with multiple devices

  • "Setup Mac OS" is a no-show

I just bought a new iMac and I'm networking it to my G5. One problem I keep hitting on both computers is: when I try to install apps, e.g., Adobe CS3, the packages don't auto-install and I have to install them manually. Each app comes with a poop sheet claiming that I can install it by going to the root drive and opening "Setup Mac OS" . Baloney. Neither the G5 nor the iMac has such a file, or app, on any drive, root or otherwise. I've tried "find", I've inspected all the drives, and it aint there. What's the deal? can it be downloaded? I'm getting tired of pulling these discs apart.

    Birck Cox wrote:
By "Auto-install" I am referring to an app which lands on the desktop, then pops open its own installer, leaving the user to merely drag an icon to the Applications folder. And, in fact, I think I have experienced a Mac applet actually installing itself.
There are a few. There isn't any consistency in installers for Mac software. As you mention, some installers involve an application that can be dragged into the Applications folder. Others have an installer application, which is run to do the installation.
Be that as it may, the exact text from my Adobe CS3 disks is: "# Mac:
    # Insert the DVD in your drive, and follow the on-screen instructions. If the installer does not launch automatically, navigate to the application folder found at the root level on your disk and double-click Setup Mac OS®) to start the installation process.
I've never seen an installer "launch automatically" on a Mac. I've also never seen anything that would support the latter part of those instructions. In my opinion whoever wrote those instructions is clueless.
    # If you downloaded the software from the web, open the folder, navigate to the application folder, double-click Setup, and then follow the on-screen instructions."
    Those instructions sound good.
Yesterday I installed Adobe Photoshop Elements 8.0 for Mac. Inserting the disc resulted in a disc volume on the Desktop but nothing else. In my reply on this thread
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11315703
I describe what I had to do to run the installer.

  • How to execute Java.exe on MAC, LINUX, UNIX...

okay, I know this is very stupid, but can anybody tell me how to run Java.exe on MAC, LINUX, UNIX?
I know how to run it from windows, I have a batch file created in windows, will it work on MAC, LINUX and UNIX as well? (I'm not sure if on other OS, there is such a file type call *.bat)

See what I mean about probably wanting a beginner's book on Unix and/or shell scripting?
okay crackers, the only thing that I have to do is put
in the name of my program into "your program here".Not necessarily. There's the ClassPath, program parameters, etc. What you need to put in the "your program here" depends upon your program. What I did was allow the script to be invoked with command-line parameters and you could (depending upon your program) put "-jar myjar.jar" in the indicated spot, if your JAR file was runnable.
The rest no need to change. right?I don't know. What does your program need? Only you can answer that, not me. I just furnished an example.

  • 4G LTE Data-stick Mac/Linux/Windows-other authentication information.

The following information has been released publicly by VZW advanced support so I feel I can share this now:
If you want to use the UML290 on the Mac/Linux/UNIX/other-platforms you can now do so if you have the engineering knowledge or a little know-how:
Quick Notes: Verizon 4G LTE uses the GSM APN authentication method through a GGSN (similar to AT&T) and 3G (1X/EVDO) traditional uses the HA CDMA method. The old CDMA authentication method has been posted years before so I won't repost that.
You WILL NOT GET SUPPORT UNTIL THE OFFICIAL VZACCESS Software comes out on the Mac.
4G LTE GSM General Device Settings-
    Phone Number: PhoneNumber
    Account name: [email protected]
    Password: vzw
    Advanced Settings-
    Carrier: Generic
    Model: GPRS (GSM/3G)
    APN: vzwinternet
    CID: 1
Click OK, then connect and enjoy.
So on the Mac connection manager (generic apple), make a profile for your UML290 hardware, should be a modem. Make a GSM connection profile with the above. Phone number is your data-stick phone number (fake phone number, used for system identification, get it from VZAccess or your account page online). Account name is "[email protected]". (Basically add @vzw4g.com to your phonenumber. Password is "vzw", same as 3g CDMA. In GSM/3G/4G carrier use generic (no special parameters). Model is GPRS (GSM/3G, same as 4G). GSM APN is "vzwinternet". CID is 1 if your drivers need it.
Enjoy 4G LTE GSM technology by VZW on your Mac! I will be running this on my Linux engineering dev machine soon. Finally I LOVE YOU VZW!
Oh and if you're just installing it without a Windows machine using it at least once, your SIM card has to be provisioned by VZW support or a store...
If you want a visual Mac guide:
    http://homepage.mac.com/jrc/contrib/tzones/
Official VZW support (replace the inetgsm.vzw3g.com APN used for overseas roaming with the 4g APN used domestically as listed above):
    Mac: http://support.vzw.com/clc/devices/knowledge_base.html?id=30063
Windows XP/Vista/7 (If you don't want to use VZAccess): http://support.vzw.com/clc/devices/knowledge_base.html?id=29355
Username/Password/Everything as said above applies, replace as needed.
NO VZAccess on Mac yet, check your data usage on vzw.com my account... The SMS warning messages should work since it's a standard GSM 3G/4G implementation by VZW if you can get a Mac/Linux app that watches for SMS from the data modem driver interface.
Verizon will probably add a second APN for smart-phones when they come out with LTE chips. Example: The "vzwinternet" APN gives you a public IP address as that's mean't for data-sticks. They will probably use something (I'm just guessing here) like "advdevice" for smart-phones and that will give the smart-phone a private IP address (10.x.x.x) like the current CDMA HA's do. With APN data traffic separation VZW with 4G GSM tech. can manage traffic volumes better with bandwidth limits, etc. AT&T/T-Mobile are doing the same now and it has recently been implemented on the legacy CDMA HA's also. Also firewalling, security.

Oh on the Mac, Apple's GSM (3G/4G/LTE) dialer should work automatically with the above settings. If not try telling Apple's OSX native dialer to dial "#777" for the LTE modem. So far my reports on this engineering fix is that ONLY THE UML290 WORKS WITH OSX! VL600 is using some proprietary LG chipset (aka NON-QUALCOMM which works with OSX LTE) that I can't figure out until VZW fixes it officially with LG.

  • CSCur27617: AnyConnect vulnerable to POODLE attack (CVE-2014-3566) Win/Mac/Linux Question

CSCur27617: AnyConnect vulnerable to POODLE attack (CVE-2014-3566) Win/Mac/Linux
I wanted to know if the AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client would still be vulnerable to this if it was only connecting via SSL VPN (TLS) to an ASA that already has the workaround implemented on it (Disable SSLv3)?
    Thanks,
    Rob Miele

    Hi Rob ,
    According to the bug:
All versions of desktop AnyConnect for Mac OS X and Linux prior to 3.1.00495 are vulnerable , so Anyconnect 3.1.06.073 is safe from POODLE vulnerability
On the Anyconnect you can disable the SSL using Ikev2 instead of the SSL protocols , however as the bug mention , the client creates a paralel ssl tunnel to get updates and profile from the router.
If you're asking to disable SSLv3 on the router , unfortunately there is not code yet , the workaround is to disable the webvpn or upgrade the VPN client.
As well here is the officil advisory for the POODLE vulnerbility on Cisco Products.

Are you saying you want to install 10.7 on your MacBook and you already have Windows XP installed in BootCamp? 10.7 doesn't come on a cd - it's a download purchased from Apple's App Store. What is on the cd? Which MacBook do you have and what Mac OS are you currently using?

  • Sync dialog window just stays blank (mac & linux) after FF upgrade from V 28 to V33

    Hi,
I've been using FF 28 so far, using a local weave server for synching my bookmarks and passwords.
Now I've installed the new mozilla syncserver, and I wanted to upgrade FF to the latest V 33. Before upgrading I unlinked the synchronization as described in https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-to-update-to-the-new-firefox-sync.
After upgrading to V 33 I would like to connect FF to the new syncserver. I go to Menu->Tools->Setup Sync and I get a nice 'Welcome to sync' screen. But after pressing 'Get Started' FF seems to load something, but ends up with an empty, blank white box in the middle of a light grey screen (printing 'mozilla' in the right upper part of the screen).
Same behavior on both mac and linux.
Can anyone suggest how to solve this? Any help is very much appreciated.
    Ralph

I understand that you are using a local weave server and have updated the new custom sync server. Specific questions about setting up a custom weave server you can refer to this [https://docs.services.mozilla.com/howtos/run-sync-1.5.html] and ask any specific questions on the sync mailing list.

  • Setup with linux

How to I start-up my newly purchased IPAD2 if I have no Windows or Mac system? We're a Linux house, this is our first Apple product. I expected it to be like most systems and startup and be usable when powered on.

The update due tis fall will be more self sufficient, with online backup options an no need to connect to a computer to get it working. I suggest you take it to an Apple store. There should be a representative there that will be happy to help you go through the initial setup. They did this for me and I didn't have to ask for this service or pay extra for it either. Once you have it set up, you should be OK until this fall when you will need to take it back to an Apple store to get the iOS 5 update. You can alternatively find a friend running Windows or OSX. Once you have the update, all future updates will be directly to the iPad and delta updates.
