Setup of G5 Cluster Node as a Standalone Server....

I have tried to no avail to try and setup a G5 XServer cluster node as a new Mac OS X 10.6 server. Here is where I screwed up - I pulled the drive out not realizing that creating a new partition on my Mac Book Pro would not be compatible and toasted the partition or rather made it so it was intel based instead of Power PC based and further went about installing the OS via "target mode" and went all the way through and realized that the server would not recognize it. So tonight I went back created 2 new partitions on the drive made them Power PC based but the server still does not recognize the drives when I boot up using the Option key. I get 2 buttons (refresh and I'm guessing a next) but the refresh puts up a clock for about 10 - 15 seconds and comes back and the next does nothing visible.
Here is what I have tried so far:
1) Tried booting up with the different boot commands
a) #3 Start up from internal drive
b) #5 Setup in Target mode but I don't have a PowerPC Mac to install from
3) #6 Reset NVRam
2) Boot with the letter "c" but nothing happens other then getting to a window with a single folder that alternates between a question and the mac guy logo (sorry don't know the exact name)
3) Boot with a Fire Wire external BluRay DVD player but does not seem to recognize it at all (could be the BluRay I guess have not thought of that)
And I'm sure I have tried a few other things but currently at wits end. I have a video card (3rd one was the charm) so I have video but have no idea how to get my Mac OS X Server software installed on this machine....
Any help or suggest would be greatly appreciated - oh I'm sure by now you know I'm new to Macs - I was an old Apple ][e guy but have been on PCs since the late 80's and finally got back to Apple - love them.

I have tried to no avail to try and setup a G5 XServer cluster node as a new Mac OS X 10.6 server.
Stop right there.
10.6 is Intel-only. It won't boot a PowerPC-based server. It doesn't matter about the disk format, or anything else. 10.5.x is as far as you can go with this machine.

Has anyone run into this problem and found a solution?
    Thanks in advance!

Ok, for everyone out there, I resolved the issue. Hopefully this will help others encountering the same problem.
It turns out that when the OS was installed, iptables firewall was enabled. This will cause havoc with the installer scripts.
My first inkling should have been when the installer stalled at 65% trying to copy home directories between nodes, the first time I ran through the installer.
At that time, Googling around found that iptables might be the problem and indeed it was running, so I just did a 'service iptables stop' WITHOUT REBOOTING THE NODES and re-ran the installer.
Well, it looks as though NOT REBOOTING THE NODES doesn't quite cut it. I then did a 'chkconfig iptables off' and REBOOTED BOTH NODES.
Oracle support simply provided me with: How to Proceed from Failed 11gR2 Grid Infrastructure (CRS) Installation (Doc ID 942166.1), which didn't really work all that well, lots of failures, errors, etc. So I just deleted the 11.2.0 directory and tried running the installer again.
This time the install went through without problems.
    Thanks!

  • Help with a Blind Configuration of a G5 Cluster node

So I bought 2 G5 Cluster Nodes to dedicate some audiovisual processes to them. My only other mac computer is a Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro.
Using Pacifist, I was able to do a clean install of Mac OSX onto the internal drive by putting it into an external enclosure.
Now here is my problem: The cluster nodes have no videocard.
I plan on using them through the OSX Screen Sharing function, when they will be conencted to the network, but I don't know how to do the initial configuration of Mac OS X on them, since I can not boot from a system using the Apple Partition Map on my Macbook pro, and the Cluster node will not boot from the GIUD partition scheme.
    Can anyone please help me?
    Thanks,
    Chuck

Assuming you're running Mac OS X Server on the cluster node, just boot the server normally - it will run a special first-time-boot process that sets up a network listener.
You can then install the Server Admin tools on your MacBook Pro and run Server Assistant. Server Assistant will look out over the network and find the new servers, then give you the opportunity to configure them remotely (assign account data, IP address, etc.).
(note you can also do this as part of the initial install process - boot the server from the Install DVD and run the entire OS installation and configuration remotely via Server Assistant)
Note: If you're not running Mac OS X Server on the cluster nodes then the above doesn't apply

  • Cluster Node as XRAID server

Does anyone know if it is possible to use a dual 2.0 G5 Cluster Node as a head server for an XRAID? I would like to have a monitor attached also. I know this will require filling both PCI slots (one video card and one fiber card). Just wondering if there are any issues with that config.

    Nah, it will work.
    Things to note:
    * Cluster node only has one drive. If it goes, there's no mirror to fail over to.
    * Cluster node comes with a 10-client version of OS X. If you're going to use it as a file server, hopefully there aren't many clients.
    * No CD/DVD drive on the cluster node.
But otherwise no physical reason it won't work.

  • Configure Oracle Grid Infrastructure for a standalone server

As I understand and as the following doc indicated, to install Oracle database, I'd have to install Grid Infrastructure first. I am not configuring RAC/cluster, only on a standalone server.
I executed runinstaller, and choose " install the software only", then after I selected "configure oralce grid infrastructure for a standalone server", I am getting the following error:
[INS-40410] The installer has detected a configured instance of Oracle Grid Infrastructure software on the system
Please advice how this instance have been configured, and how to remove it before I can proceed?
    Thanks!

    Hi ,
Before you install SQL Server on a computer that is running Windows 8, about Microsoft SQL Server 2008 , you must apply and install Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 or a later after the initial setup is complete. To install a SQL Server failover
cluster, you must create and configure a failover cluster instance by running SQL Server setup. For more information, see:

  • Cloned two vm cluster nodes from development cluster to act as template to create production cluster

    Morning,
There was so much done to setup the development cluster, I thought it would be easy to have the two nodes in the cluster cloned.  To my surprise, the development cluster was up and happily running on the new vm servers.  Stopping resources verifies
it is stopping and starting resources on the original cluster.  I am not sure how to safely have the two new servers not manage the development cluster and create a new production cluster on them.
I am hesitant to destroy the cluster as I suspect it will destroy the real development cluster.  How do I do this?  How do I delete the windows cluster software and re-install without affecting the development cluster?
Note that I tried to create a new cluster in the failover cluster manager and specify the new vm cluster servers, but it says they are part of a cluster already.  I do not see them listed as nodes.  I am not sure how to see what cluster it thinks
the new servers are part of or how to not make them part of the development cluster.  That might be the path to my solution.

This actually has worked out okay.  I found these steps and did them on both of the nodes that were claiming to be in a cluster already:
    powershell
    Import-Module FailoverClusters;
    clear-clusternode

  • Distributed Transaction Coordinator not displaying remotely on a server core cluster node..

We setup a server core single node cluster (W2012 R2).  The MS DTC is running, and the Distributed Transaction Coordinator firewall rules are enabled.  I can connect to the firewall rules and compmgmt.msc remotely for this server.  When
I attempt to connect to the Component Services Management console with this server, the MS DTC object is not displayed.  Only the COM+ applications are displayed.   We've setup other server core instances with out clustering and DTC is displayed.

    Hi Steve,
We just finished the local test and found this behavior is by design. It’s expected that we can’t see the DTC remotely from component services for a cluster node.
In my lab, 2012R2 node3 is a single node cluster and has DTC role.

  • Error: Halting this cluster node due to unrecoverable service failure

Our cluster has experienced some sort of fault that has only become apparent today. The origin appears to have been nearly a month ago yet the symptoms have only just manifested.
The node in question is a standalone instance running a DistributedCache service with local storage. It output the following to stdout on Jan-22:
Coherence <Error>: Halting this cluster node due to unrecoverable service failure
It finally failed today with OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space.
    We're running coherence-3.5.2.jar.
Q1: It looks like this node failed on Jan-22 yet we did not notice. What is the best way to monitor node health?
Q2: What might the root cause be for such a fault?
I found the following in the logs:

    Hi
It seems like the problem in this case is the call to clear() which will try to load all entries stored in the overflow scheme to emit potential cache events to listeners. This probably requires much more memory than there is Java heap available, hence the OOM.
Our recommendation in this case is to call destroy() since this will bypass the even firing.
    /Charlie

  • Why the non-cluster SQL Server appeared in the cluster nodes list

1, I install the node rs6 standalone, Why it appeared in the cluster node list by inquiry the dmv?
2, how to removed the rs6 from the cluster node list ?
by "set -clusterownernode -resource "XXXASQL" -owners NODE1,NODE2"?
But how to find the resource  name? I tried to use window cluster name, SQL cluster name, and SQL role name , All of them say failed to get the cluster object.
3,how to set the owers to {}, I try below, but failed.

IMHO, sys.dm_os_cluster_nodes  DMV is associated with the SQL Server
Operating System (SQLOS), sys.dm_os_cluster_nodes returns one row for each node in the failover cluster configuration.
As you are running standalone instance on cluster I am assuming this information is being picked from
OS and not from RS6 SQL instance.
As you have confirmed Is_cluster is false and if you don’t see RS6 instance in failover cluster manager I don’t think anything damaged here. Everything looking as expected, dont change owner node as its standalone instance.

  • Grid on a standalone server Cluster daemons not starting during server boot

Hi!I have installed Oracle Grid on a standalone server and setup Oracle db 11.2.0.2 on Oracle Linux 6.2 64 bit server. When I reoot the server and run crs_stat -t,several daemons havent started thus the ASM and db instances are also down as below
    Name Type Target State Host
    ora.DATA.dg ora....up.type OFFLINE OFFLINE
    ora.FRADG.dg ora....up.type OFFLINE OFFLINE
    ora....ER.lsnr ora....er.type ONLINE ONLINE amldb01dc
    ora.amldb.db ora....se.type OFFLINE OFFLINE
    ora.asm ora.asm.type OFFLINE OFFLINE
    ora.cssd ora.cssd.type ONLINE OFFLINE
    ora.diskmon ora....on.type ONLINE OFFLINE
    ora.evmd ora.evm.type ONLINE ONLINE amldb01dc
    ora.ons ora.ons.type OFFLINE OFFLINE
I am forced to manually start the daemons via command crsctl start resource -all then I manually start the ASM and db instances.
Yet when I run the commands
    crsctl config has
CRS-4622: Oracle High Availability Services autostart is enabled.
    crsctl check has
CRS-4638: Oracle High Availability Services is online.
Thus I would assume the daemons would start automatically during boot.
    How can I resolve this?

crstcl check crs seems not to be applicable to single instance but for RAC,since I have a single instance db,the output of the command is as below
    crsctl check crs
    Parse error:
    'crs' is an invalid argument
    Brief usage:
    crsctl check has
    Check status of OHAS.
There is no crsd.log in path /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/grid/log/amldb01dc/crsd.The output of crs_stat -t is already posted in initial post and output of entire alert log is as below

  • Grid Infrastructure for a Standalone Server or Grid Infrastructure for a Cluster?

    Hi,
I want to install a single instance database and I want to use ASM.
Now my configuration is only one node but in the future probably it scale on multiple node.
So, can I use Grid Infrastructure for a Cluster for only one node or I must use Grid Infrastructure for a Standalone Server?
    Regards

If you plan later ro use more than one server, than install the cluster grid infrastructure. It is possible to install on one server.

Bad news: You cannot do it with a Microsoft built-in solutions because you do need indeed to have physical shared storage to make Microsoft iSCSI target clustered. Something like on Robert Smit blog here:
    Clustering Microsoft iSCSI Target
    https://robertsmit.wordpress.com/2012/06/26/clustering-iscsi-target-on-windows-2012-step-by-step/
    ...or here:
    MSFT iSCSI Target in HA
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg232621(v=ws.10).aspx
...or very detailed walk thru here:
MSFT iSCSI Target in High Availability Mode
    https://techontip.wordpress.com/2011/05/03/microsoft-iscsi-target-cluster-building-walkthrough/
Good news: you can take a third-party solution from various companies (below) and create an HA iSCSI volumes on just a pair of nodes. See:
    StarWind Virtual SAN
    http://www.starwindsoftware.com/starwind-virtual-san-free
(this setup is FREE of charge, you just need to be an MCT, MVP or MCP to obtain your free 2-node key)
...to have a setup like this:
Also SteelEye has similar one here:
    SteelEye #SANLess Clusters
    http://us.sios.com/products/datakeeper-cluster/
    DataCore SANsyxxxx
    http://www.datacore.com/products/SANsymphony-V.aspx
You can also spawn a VMs running FreeBSD/HAST or Linux/DRBD to build a very similar setup yourself (Two-node setups should be Active-Passive to avoid brain split, Windows solutions from above all maintain own pacemaker and heartbeats to run Active-Active
on just a pair of nodes).
Good luck and happy clustering :)
StarWind Virtual SAN clusters Hyper-V without SAS, Fibre Channel, SMB 3.0 or iSCSI, uses Ethernet to mirror internally mounted SATA disks between hosts.

  • Cluster node reboots repeatedly

We have 2 node 10.1.0.3 cluster setup. We had a problem with a HBA card for the fibre channel to SAN and after replacing it, one of the cluster nodes keeps rebooting itself right after the Cluster processes startup.
We have had this issue once before and Support suggested the following.. Howevere the same solution is not working this time around.. Any ideas?
Check output of the unix command hostname is node1
Please rename cssnorun file in /etc/oracle/scls_scr/node1/root directory. Please issue "touch /etc/oracle/scls_scr/node1/root/crsdboot" and also change the permission and ownership of the file to match that of the node 2. Please check if there is any differences in permission, ownership, and the group for any files or directory structure under /etc/oracle between two nodes.
Please reboot node 1 after this change and see if you run into the same problem.
Please check if there is any /tmp/crsctl* files.

Well especially if you are Linux RH4 the new controler card will have cause the device names to change. Check that out. It could be that you are no longer seeing you vote and crs partitions. This can happen on other operating systems if the devices now have a new name because the controller card has changed.
For Linux try the Man pages on udev and search for udev on OTN
