Setup of NI-TimeSync with MAX in LabVIEW 2010

Hi,
I have a set of PXI systems running LabVIEW 2010 RT and want to start using NI-TimeSync for my timestamping. My systems have NI-TimeSync 1.0.1 installed and NI-Sync 3.2.1 installed. I have a system with a PXI-6682 card in slot 2, and have succesfully gotten it to pull time from a GPS antenna.
When I go to MAX on any of these systems, I briefly see "Searching for time synchronization sources..." in the Time Settings tab, and then nothing. I don't see the fields shown in this screen shot:

Hi all- it looks like there are two different issues occurring in this thread.
Tim Maddux; I believe you are referring to the Developer Zone tutorial that highlights some features we are scheduling for a future release of NI-TimeSync. We did place this one the web a bit early, but I'm glad you were able to find the material and start investigating the possibilities. You should be able to utilize those "views" in the near future
sachsm; I think you are referring to an issue where the PXI-6682 would not appear in MAX even with NI-Sync installed. This issue could intermittently (or more frequently as in your case) occur for our customers as it depended on how Windows loaded certain services. At a low-level, it was like a race condition that we were able to prevent by removing some dependencies. Regardless, you can either restart the nitsu service when you experience this issue or you can upgrade your driver to NI-Sync v3.2.2.

Timeout error with fieldpoint in Labview 7.0

I'm totally new to Labview and fieldpoint. I have Labview 7.0, with Fieldpoint 5.0 installed with updates for Labview 7 installed only, MAX 4.0. Configured my comms module fp1000 to com 2 on Pc all seems OK, and finds all my I/O modules. Only got 1 channel connected on a fp_rtd_124, and can read a temperature. Randomly I keep getting timeout error when using Labview (simple Vi setup to read temperature) or using MAX and the "Start" icon. Can anyone advise on possible causes.
Also in my playing around today, I was creating my iak file using Fieldpoint Explorer 3.0.2 but since updating to Fieldpoint 5 & MAX 4, it seems to have deleted the Fieldpoint Explorer. Do I need to reinstall explorer or can I use MAX to do all the iak configs.
Finally how do i link my iak file (electrical units) to a scale file in the VI, so I can read engineering units. I see MAX has the scaling function, but where do I link them together.
If I'm approaching this in totally the wrong way, please advise

With regards to your LabVIEW program, would it be possible to send in your code and I will have a quick look at it. With regards to the time out error, do you receive an error code of some sort, this will help me in distinguising what is causing this error.
Within MAX you can now save your iak file configs and then you can point LabVIEW towards the file that you saved. You do not need to install Fieldpoint Explorer.

What is new with MAX 2.0 and is it compatible with Session Manager?

We added non-IVI instrument information in, basically the same structure as for IVI instruments,
into the ivi.ini file to keep all instrument information in the same place. Using MAX Version 1.1 caused no problems whatsoever and the system worked fine. With the advent of MAX 2.0 you seem to use ivi.ini as well as config.mxs to store instrument information. What we have found now is that given a working ivi.ini file from MAX 1.1, we end up with 2 or 3 copies of all the devices in the IVI Instruments->Devices section! When the duplicate entries are deleted and the application exited, the
ivi.ini file is updated minus the [Hardware->] sections which contain the resource descriptors that our appl
ications look for. As an added complication, under MAX 2.1 (From an evaluation of the Switch Executive) It behaves the same, except that it almost always crashes with one of the following errors. 'OLEChannelWnd Fatal Error', or 'Error#26 window.cpp line 10028 Labview Version 6.0.2' Once opened and closed MAX 2.1 will not open again! (Note we do not have LabVIEW on the system.) What is the relationship between the config.mxs and ivi.ini now? Also, your Session Manager application (for use with TestStand) extracts information from ivi.ini and may expect entries to be manually entered into ivi.ini (e.g. NISessionManager_Reset = True) i.e. Is the TestStand Session Manager compatible with MAX 2.0?

The primary difference between MAX 1.1 and 2.x is that there is a new internal architecture. MAX 2.x synchronizes data between the config.mxs and the ivi.ini. The reason you're having trouble is that user-editing of the ivi.ini file is not supported with MAX 2.x.
Some better solutions to accomplish what you want:
1. Do as Mark Ireton suggested in his answer
2. Use the IVI Run-Time Configuration functions. They will allow you to dynamically configure your Logical Names, Virtual Instruments, Instrument Drivers, and Devices. You can then use your own format for storing and retrieving that information, and use the relevant pieces for each execution. You can find information on these functions in the IVI CVI Help file located in Start >> National I
nstruments >> IVI Driver Toolset folder. Go to the chapter on Run-time Initialization Configuration.
I strongly suggest #2, because those functions will continue to be supported in the future, while other mechanisms may not be.

I build an application exe and then its installer along with run time environment.

I tried another machine, 64 bit of course, as I want to deploy my application on a 64bit PC, but still got the same problem.
This other machine was from HP, iCore 3 (4 CPUs) 2.2GHz, 4GB RAM and running Windows Professional 64 bit.
Now as I see it, it could be a Run-time environment mis-match error.
For this I tried installing a 64 bit LVRTE from NI, but still no sucess.
I checked DEP, for all 3 PCs and it was set to the following
Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only (first option).
I am confused. I can not find a solution for this and it is really frustrating.

But I am assuming that when I make the installer, the 32-bit Run Time Engine is appened with the installer, as show below

The application runs queries to fetch data from database in SQL server 2008, and for that I am using a Microsoft SQL Native Client 2008 R2 64 bit ( this is the only version that installs on either PC, even the one on which I developed my LV Application).
I am not using any driver, only toolkits for reports - and for that I un-checked the "Remove unused polymorphic VI instances" when making the executable, otherwise LV throws up an exception that share variable are not being included.
Yes I did reboot every time after I ran the installation.
Still getting the same error.

How to get Point Grey Dragonfly firewire cameras to work with LabVIEW 2010

We recently got a new computer. The O.S. is Windows 7, 64-bit. It has LabVIEW 2010 (also 64-bit) and the Vision Development Module, as well as the Vision Acquisition Driver. We also have Point Grey Dragonfly Express cameras. The first trial of using LabVIEW to get images from one of the cameras yielded greyscale images (they are color cameras). We then installed the Point Grey drivers (flycapture2.1.3.4_x64). After installing the drivers, the camera was is no longer recognized in MAX. Does anyone have pointers or advice? Thanks.

It's been a bit since I've messed with camera settings. But I think LabVIEW requires the NI-IMAQdx driver and the greyscale was from not setting the bayer filter. I can't poke around my camera settings right now, so I can't double check.

Different results from MAX and Labview

Hi all,
We did an impact testing a couple of days ago, and I got very big acceleration (the peak is about 300g, which is much larger than the estimated value).
And then I tried a small imact test in the lab using a steel plate which is less than 1 lb to impact a steel ruler, I still got big peak number (more than 200g, which is impossible). And then I tried the small impact test again by using MAX, the peak number is about 12g, and the curve seems like pretty reasonable. I was wondering why I got different results by using MAX and Labview?
Also, sometimes when I connect the SCXI-1001 to the computer, it says the USB is malfuntion and cannot be recgonized by the computer, and turns out the driver file does not exists. But most of the time, it works very well and the driver file does exists. Why this happened?

You can do that. A task can only have the same types of inputs, meaning Analog Input, Analog Output, Digital Input, Digital Output, etc. Different sensors are just read with Analog Inputs. So they all can be in the same task. In MAX, just set up a task a configure each channel as it should be. Then use that single task in your LabVIEW code.

I have tried to transmitsome datas with the "NI CAN channel test pannel" (right click on a channel of a message), I put my value i click on "start", then "send" and when I look at the "Bus Monitor" (right click on CAN0) I see messaged that are received but I don't see my message transmit...

Control MAX through labview

Hi,
Is there any way by which I can control and make selections in MAX through labview code?
I need to select driver sessions for IVI classes of instruments. For this it will be good if I can create IVI classes and select driver sessions programatically using labview.
Any take on this?

No, you cant use any existing API to programatically adjust IVI config settings.
However, all of these settings persist in "XML-Hell." With the right file manipulations, regisistry entries and / or details on what, if any, services need to be triggered to update it is THEORETICALLY possible.

Unable to speak with the HP34401A per my soft, despite it is possible with MAX

I can speak with my HM34401A with MAX (Explorateur Measurement & Automation Explorer , but I can't access it with my soft (error BFFF00A5 in hexadecimal, despite it is the same adress in both case)
I'm using the driver found on the Ni website for LabView 6.0

Try some simple communication to the instrument, such as query the response to "*IDN?". (It should give a response string identifying the instrument.)
This should be a very simple vi - but it does check the communication path. Can you get this to work?
If you can, the address and GPIB card are good. There may be an error in your other program.
If you can't get the simple vi to work, the address or GPIB card may have problems.
One other quick thing to check, check the front panel menu on the 34401. Make sure it's set to HPIB and not RS232.

I installed on the same pc two GigE camera, each camera has its own interface card (IP), but only one camera in dtected with max.
sometimes cam0 and sometimes cam1.I have to carry out has each camera a fixed address IP but always only camera is detected.
my question is how to make the configuration to appear both camera at the same time with max.
I use the MAX version 5.3

Could we get a little more information about your setup as it will help narrow down the issue?
- What network interface cards (NIC) are you using?
- What cameras are you using?
- Are we running the cameras through a network or directly connecting them to the computer?
- Can we see each camera when plugged in individually?
- It sounds like you said that you are using a static IP address, but I wanted to confirm this.
- Can we see both NICs in Windows Device Manger?

iTunes setup on a NAS with multiple windows users?
I am very confused on what is the best way to handle this setup for my friends family. Any help would be appreciated. Sorry in advance as I know this is a long winded post - I have a feeling this will help others faced with the same issues or questions.
CURRENT SETUP
I have three new Windows 7 machines networked (two desktops and one laptop) that have four users on each - as busy family with children who need the computers for homework, projects, games, etc... The goal of this setup is that any user can log onto any computer and have there documents available to them no matter computer was free to use. I set this up using the library function in Windows 7 and seems to work pretty well.
I have put a Buffalo Linkstation NAS on the system as well. This was going to serve two purposes 1) run some backup software to protect the computers and 2) consolidate the iTunes content in one place for all users. There is also an iPad in the home that I should would be better served by accessing the content on the NAS without requiring any of the computers being on. Dave is thinking about getting some other playback devices like Apple TV so thought a NAS would be a good way to go.
CURRENT ITUNES SETUP - I have created a new iTunes library on the NAS by holding the SHIFT button down while starting iTunes and pointed to that folder on a Share on the NAS. There was no music on the system at the time as we are planning to copy this over from an OLD machine that is now not being used. I have also authorized all the computers and turned on the home sharing feature (although I am not sure what good that does).
This “shift” button trick seesm to also point the default directory there without point to it in the advanced setup tab of iTunes.
I then synced one of the iPods with purchased content on it and synced that to the library after asking me to do so before an update. All the content showed up in the library and was playable - awesome.
I then logged into each user on each machine (yikes) and installed iTunes and used the “shift” trick to connect each users iTunes to the database on the NAS. Everything seems to work - but I have not tested it thoroughly.
SUMMARY
3 new Windwos 7 networked machines
4 identical users on each machine
1 TB Buffalo linkstation
iTunes setup with the folder on a SHARE
all user’s itunes connected to the iTunes folder on the NAS
all computers authorized with home sharing turned on.
one iTunes user account signed in on each machine
multiple iPods and one iPad in the system
QUESTIONS/CONCERNS
Is there a better way to do this on a NAS?
Would home sharing be better in some way?
I understand the NAS should show up under the shared section in iTunes - I assume that would mean that would mean each user has an iTunes library on their documents?
I have read that there may be corruption issues if users on the different machines try to access iTunes at the same time.
Will there be any issues syncing that various iPods with?
Ugh - sorry for the long post and all the questions. I am just trying to find the best way to do this. I wish Apple would put out a best practices document for setups like this. Thanks in advance.

This is a user to user support forum. Your fellow users can offer solutions or workarounds based on their experience with the application. If you think it should work differently drop a line to iTunes Feedback.
For reasons unknown Apple haven't chosen to allow iTunes to be suspended in one profile and active in another. My recollection is that this applies even if each profile has a different library, although it is some time since I've committed a personal test.
I'm not sure why my suggestion make less sense that your current approach?. As I understand it currently everybody is either signed into their own account when they can do something other than work with iTunes, or they sign into the special iTunes account where they can't access any of their other stuff. You don't have to disable fast user switching. Follow exactly the same steps, but make sure everyone closes iTunes before turning the computer over to another user. Disabling fast user switching helps to enforce that action.

I have 12 core with Quatro 4000 and 5770, I want to use dual monitor setup, monitors are NEC with Spectraview-II. How do I connect? 4000 only has 1 Display Port and 1 DVI. 5770 has 2 of each, if I use both 5770 Display Ports, does the 4000 contribute?

I read that Display Port has higher band width than DVI, NEC monitors for best performance they recommend using DIsplay Port.
When I was setting this up I looked at a Nvidia Quadro 4000, unfortunately it was for PC, it had 2 Display Ports, in the Mac version they reduce it to one. I did not think there could be a difference.
Mainly want to use it for CS6 and LR4.
How to proceed???
I do not want to use the Quadro 4000 for both, that would not optimize both monitors, one DP and 1 DVI. Using just the 5770 would work but I do not think the 4000 would be doing anything, and the 5770 has been replaced by the 5870.more bandwidth.
Any ideas, I am a Mac newbie, have not ever tried a Mac Pro, just bought off ebay and now I have these problems.
As a last resort I could sell both and get a 5870. That would work, I'm sure of that, it's just that I wanted the better graphics card.

I am a novice at Mac so I read all I can. From what I understand the NEC monitors I bought require Display Port for their maximum performance. The GTX 680 only has DVI outputs. Difference from what I understand is larger bandwidth with the DP.
You said I have the 4000 for CUDA. I am not all that familiar with CUDA and when I do read about it I do not understand it.
A concern I have is, that if I connect the 2 high end NEC monitors via the 5770, using it's 2 Display Ports I would have nothing connected to the 4000. Is the 4000 doing anything with nothing connected? I read where in a PC system the 2 cards would interact but in a Mac system they do not.
Bottom line, as I see it, the 4000 will not be useful at all to me, since I want a dual monitor set-up.
So far the 5870 seems the best choice, higher band width than the 5770, and it has 2 Display Ports to optimize the NEC monitors.
I'm not sure how fine I am splitting hairs, nor do I know how important those hairs are. I am just trying to set up a really fast reliable system that will mainly be used for CS6 and LR4. Those NEC monitors are supposed to be top notch.

I am attempting to setup handoff to work with two computers on the same network. I cannot seem to get it to work. Should I be able to?

I'm not sure but I haven't seen anything on the Apple site that indicates that it would not work. The following troubleshooting documents may help: Get help using Continuity with iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite - Apple Support
Note in particular the Mac models supported. The other thing that occurs to me is that in addition to being on the same network they would have to be within Bluetooth range of each other.
