Setup outdoor wireless

I work at a garden. We have many activities in the summer. I setup outdoor wireless using Cisco 1310 wireless bridges, one is root bridge and other is non-root bridge. I find if the non-root bridge behind a tree, the signal reduce from excellent to low. I am using Omni directional antenna. If I have Yagi antenna, will that help? Can I add another AP/repeater/bridge behind the non-root bridge? If yes, how to configure them? Or any other suggestion.
The configuration can be found here:
Sample of Cisco 1310 Wireless Root Bridge
http://www.howtonetworking.com/cisco/rootbridge.htm
Sample of Cisco 1310 Non-Root Bridge Configuration
http://www.howtonetworking.com/cisco/nonrootbridge.htm

This is what we like to do.
Building Switch +++ cat 5 +++ Root Bridge ? 100 feet ?-- 1st Non-root bridge ?-- 200 feet 2nd non root bridge. Between the root bridge and non-root bridge is limited 100 feet because there are some trees and it is not clear path.
So far first two bridges (root bridge and 1st non-root bridge) works fine. We would like to cover more area and we may have another wireless client that can?t reach the 1st non-root bridge, so we need to add 2nd non-root bridge. Do you think if this design is possible? If yes, how to configure it.

  • Outdoor Wireless 1500 series in mesh

    Hi,
    we have installed a wireless outdoor setup in point to point. i need to get a few doubts cleared on outdoor wireless tech.
    1) does cleanair in 802.11a work and if so will it detect any interference between the two outdoor ap's ( i read that 802.11a doesnot support cleanair, and this is not client access. i need to only detect any inteference between the RAP and MAP)
    2) What is the usual downtime on 802.11a while dynamic channel selection happens. i have seen disconnection in some cases upto 20 mints on 801.11a band.
    3) what is the recommended datarate between RAP and MAP (i have read to keep 25mbps now it is in auto, is this ideal)
    appreciate your help,
    regards,Arjun

    Hi Emmett,
    Sadly there are no 1300 Series with "A" or "N" Radios.
    For "A" try the 1400 Series
    For "N" try the 1250 Series

  • How Do I Setup a Wireless Network in my home for 3 Mac's and 2 PC's

    Ok..... I live with 5 people and we all have computers. I'm looking to setup a Wireless Network in our house that would allow all of us to access the Internet from our various rooms. Currently we have 3 MAC (a G5 Desktop, a regular Desktop, and a Powergook G4 with airport extreme), and 2 Window's based PC Laptops. So far everyone is using DSL, with the exception of myself. I sit in the back yard accessing the neighbors wireless network. That ***** and I feel like I'm stealing.
    How would I go about setting up a Wireless network for all of these computers, and what equipment would I need to accomplish this?
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    First thing you need is a wireless router. You mentioned Airport Extreme---not sure if you are speaking about the card in the PB, or an actual router. Bottom line is that you need a wireless router. Airports will work with Windows, and Netgear is another good option as they are Mac friendly. Then, any computers that don't have wireless card will need to have one--unless you connect them directly with an ethernet cable. Get the IP addresses of all of the computers on the network. In Windows, go to Start-My Network Places-View Network Connections, then highlight the LAN that is displayed. With it highlighted, go to the "details" window and open the drop down menu if it is not open already. Write down the IP address. Then, go to the Macs you have, click on Finder--Go--Connect to server. Type in the IP address with smb:// in front and / at the end--will look something like this smb://192.xxx.x.xx/ Then select connect. Make sure you know the username and passwords of the computers as it will ask for these. To share the files from the Mac to the Windows, just follow these directions: You can set up your Mac so that you can share files with Windows computer users.
    To allow Windows users to connect to your computer, you need to turn on Windows Sharing. When you turn on Windows Sharing, Mac OS X uses the Samba server software to provide SMB/CIFS file services.
    You also need to give the Windows users the network address of your computer, and a user name and password of a user account on your computer.
    Open System Preferences and click Sharing and, if necessary, click Services.
    Select Windows Sharing in the list, then click Start.
    Click Accounts and select the name of the user account that will share files. Enter the password for that user.
    Look below the services list for your computer's network address. Give this address to Windows users.
    You can provide users with the user name and password of any account on your computer. To help keep your computer secure, you may want to create a special account for Windows users in Accounts preferences.
    Because passwords of the user accounts for Windows are stored insecurely, turn off the account when it is not being used. Before you turn off Windows Sharing, turn off all the accounts you enabled. Otherwise, the passwords are still stored insecurely.
    If you want to use a user account that existed before you installed Mac OS X Panther, you may need to reset the password for the account using Accounts preferences.
    Any of this info can also be found in the help files in the Finder. Hope this helps.

  • How to setup a wireless printer

    I was wandering if anyone out there knows how to setup a wireless printer without spending a lot of money. I have a dell photo 962 printer and a wrt54g router. I have tried to setup the printer on my laptop but it will not let me do so unless I connect it directly to the printer. My computers are running windows xp. Thanks for your help.

    well for that you need to setup a printer as network printer, if your printer have networking capabilities...if not then you need to buy print server...

    how do i setup my hp deskjet 3050 all-in-one printer for wireless printing my operating system is windows7

    Unplug the USB cable.  Now go to Start > All Programs > Hewlett-Packard > Deskjet 3050 > Add a Device.  Run the program and choose Wireless as the installation type.
    Follow the directions.  It will ask you to connect a USB cable temporarily.  Do not connect until it asks and remove it when it tells you.
    Finally, when you are done, go to Control Panel > Devices & Printers and delete the USB instance of the printer so you don't get confused when printing.

  • AE setup for wireless router and streaming music

    I'm attempting to setup my AE base station as a wireless router and use it to stream itunes through a home stereo. I'm using a new Dell Inspriron w/internal wireless card. It is detecting other wireless networks but not seeing the AE base station (which is flashing yellow even after resetting). Any input as to what I am missing?

    Hi.
    I am accessing internet thru a wireless router, and it works great. Plugin AE (setup to run on the same network) and the internet gets so slow it ceases to function though I still have a valid IP. When AE is plugged in though, iTunes recognizes the speakers connected, but when I try to select them, it says 'connecting' and the program stops responding. Oh yeah, it's iTunes 5.
    I've used my AE in hotels and shops where I've plugged it into an ethernet cable and the internet has worked automatically. I take it home and it stops. Try to play some music over it and it doesn't work either. What gives.
    Anybody have any ideas? I'd love some help.
    thanks.

  • DMZ Anchor WLC setup for Wireless Guest Access

    I have the following setup.
    A DMZ WLC 4402 connected to firewall DMZ interface in 10.10.73.0/24 network.
    An Inside WLC 2106 connected to firewall Inside interface in 10.10.71.0/24 network.
    Both WLCs are running the same 4.2.176 code.
    DMZ WLC is anchor to itself and Inside WLC select the DMZ WLC as the anchor point.
    I have setup EoIP between DMZ and Inside WLCs successfully with both the control and data path both show as UP status. >> "show mobility anchor"
    The main issue: Clients cannot obtain IP addresses after connected to Guest SSID.
    1. Inside WLC, the guest WLAN ingress is 802.11b/g radio and egress port is set to management interface (EoIP) of type WLAN.
    What is the DMZ WLC setting? Is the ingress set to "802.11b/g" which does not make sense because the ingress is EoIP from Inside WLC?
    Or I still set as 802.11b/g? Same config as Inside WLC? I read from other threads suggested by Terry that the config must be the same for both WLCs.
    In the Inside WLC, I saw alot of pdu encapsulation errors for broadcast packets which is ffff.ffff.ffff xxxx which I think is the DHCP request from the connected Wireless clients not making through the EoIP tunnel. I have set static ip for the Wireless client but the packets cannot route through the EoIP tunnel to the far end.
    2. DHCP server is provided by DMZ WLC with the scope 10.10.76.0/24. In the Inside WLC, which DHCP server IP adddress to set to? DMZ WLC mgmt ip address? DMZ WLC, the DHCP server is also set to DMZ WLC mgmt ip?
    3. Layer 2 authentication. I read that DMZ WLC is supposed to be the DHCP server, Layer 2 or 3 authentication for Wireless Clients. However, it seems like Inside WLC is required to configure the Layer 2 authentication parameters and the DMZ WLC is set to providing the DHCP service?
    4. Lastly, anyone has done DMZ WLC sending the Wireless clients traffic to Bluecoat proxy server before hitting the Internet?
    Thanks.

    One of the biggest things is to make sure the wlan is configured exactly the same. The DMZ WLC ingress is the management and also is the egress port. You can create a dynamic interface on the DMZ WLC, but this way makes thing easier. The DMZ WLC should provide the dhcp, so the dhcp scope of course will be on the same subnet as the management of the DMZ WLC. The DHCP Server will be the ip address of the management interface of the DMZ WLC. The authentication also has to be configured exactly the same on the inside wlc and the DMZ wlc. Since you are pushing clients through the tunnel to the DMZ WLC, that is where clients will need to get their ip address, since that DMZ WLC has a network interface to the guest network. I haven't had luck when a proxy is involved, but I know there was a post a while ago on how to setup the proxy to allow the wlc to bypass the users initial dns resolution.

  • Outdoor wireless Bridge

    Hello,
    I am looking for recommendation on a Cisco Wireless Bridge, to bridge between two buildings about 500m to 1km appart.
    Can someone with this experience please recommend what wireless bridge will satisfy this need.
    Product number would be helpfull, so I can find it on the Cisco site.

    We use the 1410 that has a built in antenna. A coupel of years ago we installed some with external panel antennas, but saw no advantage. The internal antenna eliminates one more point of failure, the coax and connector required for an external antenna.
    The 1400 series is built like an army tank and is ready to mount outdoors with no additional enclosure.
    We are using them in one-to-one bridge mode, and also in an access point mode serving up to five or six buildings all looking at it with their 1400 series bridge.

  • Outdoor wireless iphone speaker

    hi, im looking for a rugged, good quality wireless outdoor speaker for my iphone 5, any suggestions?

    How could a firmware update conceivably change the size of the headset jack, (or any other aspect of the phone hardware)? Are you serious??
    Either there is debris in the jack you don't see, or the plug has become bent or corroded. Did you try plugging in something else like the iPhone headset? If that fits, the problem is with the speaker plug. If not, the problem is in the jack, and you should blow it out with canned air (never by mouth).

  • Cisco IPSec Client Setup for Wireless

    I would like to set up Cisco IPSec VPN Client on a wireless Laptop to authenticate to a Cisco Radius Server 3.2. (WLC 4100)with pre-share keys.
    I have setup the basic parameters on the WLC,SSID, VLAN, L3 Security IPSec and default IPSec parameters. The WLC does not seem to send/forward any kind of request to ACS at all and when i connect on the Wireless Client it behaves as a pass through VPN.

  • Indoor and Outdoor Wireless Camera

    Can anyone give me any information on electrical hookup with these cameras.   Do they use regular plugs or must I wire them up special?
    I would love to put a wireless camera on the ceiling at my front-door but there is no electrical outlet.
    The same goes to where I'd want the outdoor camera.
    Please advise

    Not sure what you mean mounted in the wall. Both units come with a base. I have my indoor camera sitting on a shelf and the outdoor camera is mounted to a post in my yard. There are no other wires besides the 110 plug.

  • Help! Confusion over how to setup intel3945 wireless and rc.conf

    Hi,
    I'm very confused.  I've already read through all the wikis and searched many forum posts.  I can't get my wireless intel3945 to work on my dell vostro 1400.
    Iwconfig says the wireless card is at wlan0 and dmesg | grep iwl says it has detected it.  However, when I try a iwlist wlan0 scan it returns :
    wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down
    I think the problem is that I don't know how to setup rc.conf correctly or use the command line to test the wireless.  Forum posts say many different things on how this is done.
    These are the steps I have taken:
    uninstalled the ipw3945 and ipw3945-ucode and ipw3945d.
    installed iwlwifi and iwlwifi-3945-ucode
    in my rc.conf modules, added iwl3945.
    I'm not sure how to setup the networking section, this what I have now:
    lo="lo 127.0.01"
    eth0="dhcp"
    wlan0="dhcp"
    INTERFACES=(lo etho)
    gateway="default gw 192.168.1.1"
    ROUTES=(!gateway)
    And in my dameons I have 'network'.
    How can I scan for networks and connect to them on the commandline?  I'd prefer not to use a gui tool because they never work and never tell me why they're not working.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Cheers!

    broch wrote:I have ipw3945 and iwl3945 working with wpa2 (or vpn)
    (less complicatd than the above)
    don't use netcfg2
    Why?
    no particular reason.
    Simply when I configured wireless, netcfg2 wasn't available. Since then it (wireless) works, so not having any problems, I did not modify network setup. Next week or so I am going to install Arch on my daughter's laptop (per her request ) so I will try netcfg2.
    So this is what I have for ipw3945 wpa2 or iwl3945 with wpa2
    Below you will find a lot of words so read slowly but there is not much actual work
    ipw3945 setup
    kernel 2.6.23.x (Arch or vanilla)
    or
    kernel 2.6.24/2.6.24-gitX (patched with ipw3945 patch from gentoo -> compiling separate module for 2.6.24 may fail. if you want kernel patch I can post a link)
    for default kernel install Arch packages for ipw3945, ipw3945d, ipw3945-ucode
    or
    if you want to compile modules, you will also need ieee80211 (first uninstall kernel's default, then install from sources otherwise ieee80211 from sources may refuse to install)
    modify /etc/rc.conf
    DAEMONS=(.... @ipw3945d @network ....)
    that is all you don't need to add ipw3945 to MODULES=(.....)
    because ipw3945d will automatically start ipw3945 module
    do not list eth1 in network config section:
    lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
    eth0="dhcp"
    INTERFACES=(eth0)
    as you see, in my case only eth0 (wired) is listed and eth1 (wireless) is not listed
    now you are done with basic network configuration for ipw3945, restart network/computer to bring up ipw3945d/ipw3945
    check if modules are up and basic network is set:
    #lsmod | grep ipw
    #ifconfig -a
    or
    #iwconfig
    if all is o.k. configure
    WPA2:
    configure router for wpa2
    client: basically follow Arch wiki:
    configure wpa_supplicant (installed already of course)
    #wpa_passphrase your_ssid your_psk
    keep terminal window open with created encrypted wpa passphrase  and in the second terminal window edit /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
    ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
    network={
            ssid="your_ssid"
            scan_ssid=1
            proto=WPA RSN
            key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
            pairwise=CCMP TKIP
            group=CCMP TKIP
                    psk=whatever_output_from_wpa_passphrase
    Above pairwise and group setup will depend on your router (network capabilities)
    almost done:
    run
    #wpa_supplicant -Bw -Dwext -i eth1 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
    the above assumes that your ipw3945 is set as eth1 (from iwconfig output)
    to connect to the network I am using "wireless assistant" http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.ph … tent=21832
    that is all for ipw3945. You may automate network starting/connecting to wpa2 by writing simple script.
    iwl3945
    --kernel 2.6.23.x
    install iwlwifi and iwlwifi-3945-ucode
    --kernel 2.6.24.x
    install only iwlwifi-3945-ucode as kernel has iwlwifi module incorporated
    default iwlwifi does not support LED so I suggest to install something like knemo for kde to show active network icon. The latest iwlwifi does support LED but it is not yet incorporated into 2.6.24 vanilla kernel.
    if you have kernel 2.6.23.x with external iwlwifi module
    modify /etc/rc.conf
    and add iwlwifi to
    MODULES=(.....)
    nothing else is required.
    if you have kernel 2.6.24 with integrated iwlwifi module you don't have to edit /etc/rc.conf
    As in the case of ipw3945, I do not list wireless interface (wlan0) in /etc/rc.conf
    for kernel 2.6.23.x
    load module/restart network or simply restart computer
    check if module is up
    #lsmod | grep iwl
    #iwconfig
    or
    #ifconfig -a
    WPA2
    same wpa_supplicant.conf as above, so if you already have it no need for modifications.
    start wpa2
    #wpa_supplicant -Bw -Dwext -i wlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
    the only difference in the command is wireless interface: wlan0
    connect to the network, again I am using "wireless assistant"
    vpn
    I am using cisco vpn. Client is provided by vpn host, cisco does not provide vpn client for individual download, but you can find it on line.
    vpn host will provide pcf file for you
    - install vpnclient
    - copy your VPN profile (vpn.pcf) to the
    /etc/CiscoSystemsVPNClient/Profiles
    directory
    -- start vpn client
    /opt/cisco-vpnclient/bin/vpnclient connect vpn pcf_file_name
    provide username and password and off you go
    From my experience none of linux gui for vpn works reliably so you will have to resort to the command line.
    That is all, a lot of writing, but actual ipw3945 and iwl3945 configuration is straightforward and very short.
    Hopefully this will work for you.
    forgot to add regarding vpnclient (cisco)
    you will have to modify
    /etc/init.d/vpnclient_init
    line 38 and line 101
    replace
    /sbin/lsmod
    with
    /bin/lsmod
