Setup RV220W as Access Point

Hi,
May i know that can a CISCO RV220W setup as a Access Point in company network?
We already have a router for IP management.
is it possible to setup as Acces point?
Also can we separate the guest and internal user for using wireless by difference SSID and VLAN.
It seem it cannot setup if i need to setup limited network access right by SSID and VLAN.
Thank you
Rgds,
Sun

Thank you for your reply.
For setup as AP, i understand your suggestion.
Also i understand i can setup a VLAN assign to an SSID.
Under this SSID, internal user can access our network.
I can setup Lan Port (1) and Lan Port (2) in VLAN1, assign one SSID.
i plug my default gateway(existing router) into Lan Port (1), so my internal user can access network resource by this SSID
For guest SSID, we don't have other router.
If i setup Lan Port (3) and Lan Port (4) in VLAN2, assign one new SSID.
Where i can enable "inter-VLAN" with protection of local network?
Can i setup the protection of local network with Guest SSID by RV220W?
Do i need additional equipment?

  • Setup WRT54GX as access point

I would like to setuo my WRT54GX as an access point connecter to a WRT160N which will be the Router. What changes to I need to make in the WRT54GX setup to get this done?
    thanks Ray

If you want to use both the Routers you have to connect them with cables...You can't communicate them wireless or like an access point...

  • Port forwarding / PPPoE setup / WRT54GS as access point

    Hi,
i have 3 questions as u can understand from the subject
First's lets make a rough sketch of the net topology
    Internet --------  DSL Modem ------- WRT54GS  >>>> 2 wireless laptops
                                                                   |
                                                                   |
                                                                   |
                                                        Wired Desktop PC
My DLS Modem is a Siemens Speedstream4200 connected to WRT54GS using an Ethernet cable. WRT54GS is v7.0 using firmaware v7.50.0. The 2 laptops run Vista Home Premium and my Wired Desktop Windows XP Pro.
    So, now to the questions:
    A. I tried using PPPoE in the Internet connection box of the WRT54GS, i supplied the username and pasword of my ISP but i couldn't establish an internet conection. Of course i didn't turn off the modem, router and pc as pointed out in topic with AnwerId = 2210 which i found today, will do that tonight, so hopefully there will not be a problem. I just switched from DHCP to PPPoE.... so, there might not be a prob after all... (is turning on and off the hardware that substancial ? )
    B. I am currently using DHCP as the preferred Internet connetion type. I tried to forward a port to use with uTorrent. I gave my desktop pc a static IP (192.168.1.199), forwarded the port to the corresponding area of the router's page (port 59876, both protocols, enable) and unchecked the Block anonymous requests. Had no luck . Thing is that i am not sure about the TCP/IP settings i have used...
    Static IP :               192.168.1.199
    Subnet   :               255.255.255.255 (default value)
    Default Gateway :  192.168.1.1  (the router's IP)
    Preffered DNS    :  62.178.90.17
    Secondary DNS :   62.178.90.18
The DNS's are the ones that my ISP gave me. Are these the ones that i am supposed to use here or should i use my routers IP as a DSN? (my DSL modem is accessed in the network at http://192.168.254.254)
    C. I have also a second WRT (currently not connected) and i want to use it as an access point (extending the range of my network in a building)
I am thinking of something like the following
    Internet --------  DSL Modem ------- WRT54GS  >>>> 1 wireless laptops (floor 2)
                                                                   |
                                                                   |   (this is an ethernet cable)
                                                                   |
(this is an access point)   WRT54GS >>>> 1 wireless laptop (floor 0)
                                                                   |
                                                                   |
                                                        Wired Desktop PC
What do i have to do ? connect the 2 WRT54GS, make sure that both WRT54GS have the same SSID and use different channels? What about port forwarding ? i guess i will have to forward the IP of the access point to the router and the IP of my PC to the access point ? ? ?
Well, thx at least for your time to read my email
    theodore

    A. If you cannot set PPPoE on the WRT although it is supposed to be required for your DSL connection then probably the SpeedStream is operating as router as well. That's why you can use internet connection type DHCP. You should post the full information on the Status tab of the router. It will show how you are connected to the SpeedStream and whether it is a router or not. Otherwise you could also do this test. If both IP addresses are not identical then you have a router/modem. You should consider putting the SpeedStream into "bridge" mode. In bridge mode it operates like any normal modem. Then you should be able to configure the PPPoE connection on the WRT.
    B. Obviously, if your modem is also operating as gateway router port forwardings won't work unless you configure port forwardings on the modem/router as well. The modem/router is the device with the public IP address. You have to forward ports from the Speedstream to the WRT WAN IP and on the WRT to the computer in question. You should assign a static IP address in the internet connection settings of the WRT (for similar reasons like for the computer). As this is complicated this would be another good reason to put the modem into bridge mode. Then the WRT is connected to the internet and you only have to configured port forwardings on the WRT.
    C. See here. For a roaming network wireless settings on both WRTs must be identical except for the channel numbers. If you set up the second router like suggested there is no port forwarding on the second WRT.

  • Switchport setup for lwapp access point running several ssid's

    Hi all
when setting up an lwapp acces point, do I need to trunk all the vlans on the port to the ap? or do I only need to enable the management vlan to the acces point ? ie 1 vlan and normal access port ?
    cheers
    Carl

If its a LWAPP AP, then the switchport should be a ACCESS PORT.. this is just to get the IP address to the AP, then the AP wil try to join the WLC.. once the AP joins, the SSID and rest flow through the LWAPP tunnel..

  • No AirPlay when connected through access point

I have my wireless setup with a main router in one room and another router (a DIR615) in another room setup as an access point.
I have an Apple TV 2. gen which is hooked up by ethernet.
Everytime Im connected wirelessly through the main router, AirPlay works fine, by when Im connected through the DIR615 (the access point), theres no AirPlay.
When Im on the access point everything else seem to work fine - only thing thats missing is AirPlay. Oh and Remote has the same issue.
The DIR615 has an option called "Use as access point" which I turned on. Then I set it to broadcast the same SSID as the main router with the same password. Is that wrong set up?
I can access my other device like my NAS with no problems through both the main router and the access point.

I have noticed a similar issue.
Years ago, I extended my original wired network with an Airport Express (AE) acting as a bridged access point. When I got my iPod Touch, I noticed that the AE would go out to lunch occasionally if the WiFi on the Touch was on. But when the AE was functioning correctly, I could do AirPlay from the Touch to the AE.
With the addition of an iPhone and another Touch in the house, the AE was becoming more flaky, so I bought an access point product from Trendnet. This device bridges another wireless network to the same IP subnet (192.168.1.0/24) as the wired and AE wireless network, but it is a different wireless network (SSID) from the AE wireless.  This allows me to configure the handheld devices to only connect to the Trendnet. Now the AE no longer crashes. (Pretty ironic that I need to buy a non-Apple device to get it to work...).
However, I do not get the AirPlay icon when a handheld is connected to the Trendnet network.  I just tried connecting one of the Touches to the AE wireless and when I do, voila, I do get the AirPlay icon.
Theoretically, the path taken to the AE from the handheld shouldn't matter, but it looks like Apple engineered it so that it does. Maybe AirPlay doesn't run over IP??  It is disappointing and I hope it gets fixed.

  • WLAN 4402 Access points hang or reboot

We are seeing a very strange issue in our WLAN setup. Our access points hang or reboot randomly. We have WLAN controller 4402 with 25 Cisco 1020 Access points. Our syslog server shows for some access points rebooted. While others just hang and then come back online after 10-15 minutes. We have similar code 3.2.78.0 running at other sites and everything seems to be stable, therefore we do not want to upgrade or install a new code. Any suggestions, or help will be highly appreciated by the experts.
    Thank you
    Ismail

The errors we saw were "[ERROR] spam_lrad.c 1840: AP 00:0b:85:66:77:88 associated. Last AP failure was due to Configuration changes, reason: did not get join response"
We called Cisco TAC, got the case escalated to the highest level possible, till we got hold of the actual developers of the code. Gave Cisco engineers the Sniffer packet information of the wlan controller and AP.
Finally Cisco engineer found a bug in the code 4.0.179.8 The bug will be fixed in the next release.

  • Replacing Exisiting Access Points

    Hello,
I currently have 2 Access Points in the organization I am employed for I am supposed to maintain the WLAN infrastructure and secure it to the best of ability.
We currently have a D-Link D1-714P+ and an aged Roam About, the D-Link using WPA TKIP and the Roam About using WEP (Can't support any higher). The ranges of the APs are quite limited and terrible.
Basically each AP has to be managed separately in every aspect. I have been investigating Cisco's Unified Architecture and I like the idea.
I am considering purchasing two Cisco APS probley the 1200 Series, once they can support the latest encryption along with VPN and RADIUS support.
My requirements for the APS are basically:
    802.11 A, B, G
    WPA, WPA2, TKIP, AES
    VLAN
    RADIUS
With regards to centralize and manage the two AP's I would be using the Wireless Control System, I am abit dumbfound on this.. Is this software that can be purchased to maintain the security, performance, logging and management of both APS? Or is this a new piece of equipment?
Basically, like in a Windows 2003 Active Directory Environment you have users/passwords setup to authenticate with the domain controller, I'd like a similar setup with my Access Points, instead of just using one plain old key for everyone, is this possible?
    Excuse my ignorance...
    Thanks,

Access points are controlled and configure by Controllers in Centralized architecture. Controllers are in turn manged by Wireless Control system. WCS is basically a mangement system for centralized wireless infracture. Refer URL

  • Infrastructure access point unreachable for management, but is passing traffic.

We have 2 aironet 1310 aps setup as infrastructure access points between 2 buildings.  One went south on us & we placed it.  Before the bad one went down, we were able to manage both remotely & could see them from the next device via CDP.  Now, we can't connect or even ping either AP.  And the weird part is that the switches that connected to each can see each other via CDP, but not the access points between them.  I'm attaching the configuration.  Before I make the 2.5 hour drive back to the site, does anyone have an idea on what I may have misconfigured on either or both access points?

  • Supported access points for the rv220w

I need to extend my wireless coverage to another building.  What access points, in repeater mode, will the rv220w support?  I need an AP with detachable antennas.  I have an external mounted antenna on the metal building that I need to hook the AP to.  Thanks!

Hi R. B, thank you for using our forum, my name is Luis I am part of the Small business Support community. As far I know the RV120W and the RV220W uses the same chipsets, so they could be used for WDS bridge setup.
For your second point the RV120W has antennas and you could remove them. Bellow you will see the review of the RV120W.

  • What is the WPS button on my access point?  I am trying to setup wirelessly with a canon MX892 printer

Printer setup instructions say to press the WPS  button on the access point (my 4th gen Time Capsule).  Does that mean hit reset and will I have to setup every other device again by doing that?

No, do not hit reset .. it is not a WPS button.
Apple products do not use WPS, so no WPS button is needed. And they have no need to implement one.. nothing exists outside the Apple bubble.. didn't you know that??
Read the forum expert Tesserax instructions for using WPS. https://discussions.apple.com/message/16034147#16034147
But it is better to plug in your printer to a mac by usb and use the disk provided to do a full manual setup of wireless.. WPS is simply the easy way.

  • Can WRT54G be setup as a Wireless Access Point?

Does anyone know how to setup a router (WRT54G) to connect to other routers using a wireless connection and function as either a wireless access point or another router using the main router for it's internet and network connection?

you cannot get  the WRT to connect wireless to any device as it is an access point.
However this same thing will work wired. All you need to do is change the LAN ip of the WRT to 192.168.1.50 from 192.168.1.1 and disable the DHCP on the WRT.
Connect both devices LAN to LAN , do not use the internet port of the WRT.

  • Best way to setup WRT300N as an Access Point

I have upgraded my wireless network to 802.11n by replacing my 802.11g AP and NICs in the kids computers with Linksys gear. My old wireless router was configured as an Access Point (no gateway functions). What's the best way to set the WRT300N like that?
I have connected my wired LAN to one of the switch ports (not the WAN port), disabled DHCP, Firewall, & NAT. This seems to work but I'm not sure if it's the best way to do this. Performance seems a little slow.

the way your network is setup right now is fine. However you say that you are facing speed issues. Is this on the wired or wireless ?
Have you checked what firmware version your currently have on the router.Upgrade if necessary.

  • Roaming between RV220W wireless router and WAP121 Access Point

Hello, I have recently purchased a RV220W wireless router and a WAP121 access point and i would like to allow my users to "roam" between the two networks as needed (so when the user is closer to whichever one they connect to that one since it has a better signal). For the most part I only have experience in cisco IOS and in actual routers not the wireless stuff so my knowledge has not exactly transfered over well.

    William,
WDS will not work between the RV220W and WAP121 due to incompatible chipsets. The RV220W can be repeated using WDS by another RV220W or RV180W only. You will need to plug the WAP121 into the RV220W or try WorkGroup Bridge mode to repeat the signal.
Regarding roaming, the router or AP are not aware of each other and do not have the capability to disconnect a client and help them connect to the AP with the stronger signal. The client will switch to the stronger AP only when the original signal is lost.
The Aironet (enterprise) devices have the ability to utilize a wireless LAN controller which can help keep devices connected to the stronger signal and allow truly seamless roaming between APs.

    Hi Nassem,
    It looks like you ended up with a Lightweight AP (LAP Part#) instead of an IOS AP. This can be fixed;
Reverting the Access Point Back to Autonomous Mode
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/wireless/ps430/prod_technical_reference09186a00804fc3dc.html#wp161272
You can convert an access point from lightweight mode back to autonomous mode by loading a Cisco IOS Release that supports autonomous mode (Cisco IOS release 12.3(7)JA or earlier). If the access point is associated to a controller, you can use the controller to load the Cisco IOS release. If the access point is not associated to a controller, you can load the Cisco IOS release using TFTP.
Using a TFTP Server to Return to a Previous Release
Follow these steps to revert from LWAPP mode to autonomous mode by loading a Cisco IOS release using a TFTP server:
Step 1 The static IP address of the PC on which your TFTP server software runs should be between 10.0.0.2 and 10.0.0.30.
Step 2 Make sure that the PC contains the access point image file (such as c1200-k9w7-tar.122-15.JA.tar for a 1200 series access point) in the TFTP server folder and that the TFTP server is activated.
Step 3 Rename the access point image file in the TFTP server folder to c1200-k9w7-tar.default for a 1200 series access point, c1130-k9w7-tar.default for an 1130 series access point, and c1240-k9w7-tar.default for a 1240 series access point.
Step 4 Connect the PC to the access point using a Category 5 (CAT5) Ethernet cable.
Step 5 Disconnect power from the access point.
Step 6 Press and hold MODE while you reconnect power to the access point.
Step 7 Hold the MODE button until the status LED turns red (approximately 20 to 30 seconds) and then release.
Step 8 Wait until the access point reboots, as indicated by all LEDs turning green followed by the Status LED blinking green.
Step 9 After the access point reboots, reconfigure it using the GUI or the CLI.
    From this doc;
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/wireless/ps430/prod_technical_reference09186a00804fc3dc.html#wp161272

  • Having Issues with E1000 as an Access Point setup - Please Help

Quick background - Using an E2000 as my main router for a DSL connection (using an ISP provided Zyxel 660HW modem with wireless disabled if that matters). I have an E1000 that I want to setup as a LAN to LAN connection to the E2000 at the far end of the house and two floors down to extend my network.
I am pretty network saavy and thought this would be a snap. But I am running into trouble and hoping someone can assist.
Here are the steps I took:
    1. I ran a CAT 5 connection down to the basement where the E1000 is to be setup.
    2. I hard reset the E1000 to factory defaults
    3. I connected my notebook to the E1000 via a LAN port. At this stage the E1000 is NOT on the network
    4. I configured the E1000 with an IP of 192.168.1.2 - my main router (E2000) is set to 192.168.1.1 and the IP ranges start at .100 so this should present no conflicts
    5. I disabled DHCP
    6. I disabled NAT
    7. I saved settings and rebooted router
    8. I removed connection to notebook and plugged in the CAT 5 run from the E2000 - LAN port 1 on both (no WAN/Internet port used)
At this stage I expected the E1000 to act as an Access Point but it is not functioning properly. The first thing I notice is that the E1000 that should now be the AP is broadcasting the router name (something like Cisco 54653) even though this is not a broadcast SSID but only the router name. That is odd, I believe.
I have tried rebooting both the E2000 and E1000 along with the modem, no luck. I have tried different IPs for the E1000 just in case but again no luck, the wireless is not extended.
Any advice or guidance? Am I doing something wrong?
    Any help is appreciated.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It sounds like you have configured the E1000 properly, but you didn't describe how you have configured the Zyxel and E2000.
    Do you have A or B ?
    A.  Zyxel set to full bridge mode.  Then connect Zyxel to E2000's internet port and configure E2000 for PPPoE internet connection type (and DHCP server enabled and NAT enabled). Change MTU to manual on E2000 and enter 1492.  And then connect your E1000 as you described.  Internet connection type on E1000 is AutoconfigDHCP.
    B. Zyxel is configured as modem/router (DHCP server enabled and NAT enabled).  Then connect Zyxel to E2000's internet port.  E2000 is configured as router (DHCP server is enabled and NAT is enabled) and local IP address is 192.168.2.1.  Internet connection type on E2000 would be AutoconfigDHCP.  E1000 is configured as you described except local ip address is 192.168.2.2.  Internet connection type on E1000 is AutoconfigDHCP.
