Setup system for Oracle practice

Hi,
Because I am preparing for OCP DBA 9i test, I want to set up environment on my personal Laptop so that I can do practice simultaneously. Could you share me what software I need and what should be system requirements?
My laptop configuration:
Dell D620 Latitude
RAM: 2.5 GB
Intel: Core Duo 7200 2.00GHZ
Memory: 80 GB
Present Operating system: Windows XP
Let me know whether I need to upgrade my laptop.
What else I need? Do I have to install UNIX - Red Hat or Solaris?
Do I have to install Oracle on windows platform or on unix platform? Can anybody provide me details on installation precess?
Now I do not have separate partition. Probably I have to do so if I intend to install Linux.
Your contribution is appreciated.
Thanks!

It's my personal laptop. So I do not have any obligation to do partition on it. However I guess I need VM because my system cannot generate two IP addresses at same time. Well, I did not get what you meant by "dual boot". Is their any chance that two OS will run simultaneously on same system?
Well, not sure how come you got the idea of 2 IPs. If you can do a partition than make some space free and install OEL over it. With dual boot , I mean to say that you would get 2 o/s to boot your system. At one time, there can be only o/s which can boot. The only other way to keep running another o/s is to let it run under the virtual machine. So if you want that, the only way out would be to use VMware or anything other like it.
Here is what I have understood...
I'll install Oracle Linux on separate partition and will install Oracle on windows. Now I can access Oracle through Linux...Once again, not able to follow the train of thought. If you install linux on a seperate paritition than how come you can access it while running windows? And how come you can access oracle running over it over windows? What's the need at all to even think about it? Tell you what, just get the vmware installed and over that linux and oracle. Let it run in parallel with your windows and have fun!

  • Where to download and how to install X Window System for Oracle Linux 5 ?

    Folks,
Hello. I am using Oracle Linux 5 and Oracle Database 11g for PIA.
Before install Oracle DB 11g into Oracle Linux 5, we need to install X Window System according to the document page 2 http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/install.111/b32285.pdf
But I don't know where to download and how to install X Window System for Oracle Linux 5.
Can any folk provide a link to download X Window System and tutorial to install it for Oracle Linux 5 ?

You can address the problem in a number of different ways.
You can install X-windows from the installation DVD or setup access to the Oracle public software repository as described in http://public-yum.oracle.com. In which case, the command to install X-windows is: yum groupinstall "X Window System"
Or, you login remotely and and use SSH with X-forwarding, in which case the software on the server will use the X-Windows server on your client system. This is probably the preferred way since you do not have X-windows installed on the server. For more details about SSH forwarding and howto, please see Install Oracle 11gR2 on Ubuntu Linux 11.04 (64-bit) Howto part 2 Oracle Universal Installer.

  • Most widely used operating system for oracle database

    hi,
can anyone figure out which operating system is widely used for oracle database around the world.
    thanks and regards,
    Ashok

I don't think you can safely pick one single operating system for Oracle.
Over the years I have seen various Unix flavors, VAX/VMS, Windows and others being used to a great extent for running Oracle database.
Picking one flavor will be tougher then having to program the database under any operating system it is made available.

  • Certified operating system for Oracle Identity Management 10g (10.1.4.0.1)

    Hello,
I have a question regarding the certified operating system for Oracle Identity Management 10g (10.1.4.0.1)
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/ias/files/idm_certification_101401.html
    - for an Intel EM64T 64 bit machine
for the application server database it is stated that we need
    Windows 2003 R1 (64 bit OS)
and the application server platform is certified with
Windows 2003 R1 with SP1 or higher (64 bit OS)
an installation of application server platform + database on a single Intel EM64T with Windows 2003 R1 with SP1 is not certified ? or with other words, if I add Sp1 to 2003 than the application server database is not on a certified platform ?
    thanks

    Hi Florin
My guess is that you are looking at the Oracle Identity Federation certification section in the link for the IDM certification.
The IDM certification for windows is in par. 2.3
For a 64 bits machine it specifies that you need Windows 2003 R2 to run it. And it is only certified for an Oracle database version 9.0.3.1. The footnote says:
    Oracle Database includes Oracle 9i 9.2.0.8, Oracle 10g 10.1.0.5, Oracle 10g 10.2.0.1, and Oracle 10g 10.2.0.2
so I would go for the latest Oracle database version 10g 10.2.0.2. However the link with the Oracle database versions only notes an Oracle database version 10.2.0.1 available for Windows 64 bit. A quick lookup under the certifify tab in metalink shows that Oracle 10g R2 is certified for Windows 2003 10g R2 and that there is a 10.2.0.2 patch set that can be applied upon the Oracle database 10.2.0.1 base release. Don't forget to apply the latest CPU after this is done.
I have this from the documentation links you added in your question. I have not installed IDM 10.1.4 on Windows 64 bit myself.
    Cheers

  • Good computer system for Oracle 12c

    Hi,
Presently I have one old PC at my home for learning and testing purpose. Now, it seems me very old and slow, so I am planning to buy a new desktop (Not laptop) for learning and testing purpose.  I wish to run Oracle 12c, RAC, Data Gurad, ASM, Cloud control, Oracle linux in Oracle VM Virtualbox.  Apart from these, I wish to run SQL Server 2012, Windows Server 2012, dot net 2012 Prof Edition and some other softwares.  So, please tell me what should be good enough configurations for the PC i.e. HDD, RAM, Processor, Mother board, so that at least it should be good enough for next 5 years.
    Thanks.

    1000 USD.

Yes, and this is what I am asking that what should I ask them to have in it.
You are being too picky and to be honest, if you are planning to buy a system for practice. this is way too much  of being fussy. Ask vendors around your area suggest you for an Intel Core-i7 or Xenon , a motherboard that can support at least 32gb of RAM and hard drive options. Now do NOT ask us to give you links . This is simply being lazy. Search and read reviews from different sites. Make up your mind and go for it. To be honest, I am not sure that why you are stuck up in Intel, AMD when somewhere above, you yourself has mentioned this,
"I guess, Intel's processor and motherboards are the best; of course they are high priced; 45% higher than AMD, but 65% more performance"
So seems like you do have a favorite here. Then what's the fuss, go for it. You are not making a machine to support a 24/7 system on which lives would depend, are you?

  • Setup FORMS_PATH for Oracle Forms 10g in windows7

    Hi,
Please kindly advise the regedit path to set the FORMS_PATH variable at windows for Oracle Forms 10g?
Should it be HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > ORACLE?
If yes, is it the unique path? since I cannot create folder for 'ORACLE'.
    Thanks,
    CY

If you installed the product following the instructions found in MOS Note 559067.1 the registry key will have already been created for you.  It will be a sub to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Oracle\<???>
Find this in your system and look at the contents of each key below "Oracle".  It should be obvious which one belongs to Forms as there will be numerous FORMS_xxxxx entries there.

  • ODBC setup error for Oracle Client

    Hi,
I'm trying to setup ODBC connection for my Oracle client while installing BO. Following are the steps I followed.
    1. Downloaded the Oracle Client from the link http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/features/instant-client/index-097480.html . From that downloaded two zip files. “Instant Client Package – Basic Lite" and “Instant Client Package – ODBC”. Extracted the Zip Files to the folder I created under C: as C:\Oracle\instantclient_11_2.
    2. Since I'm setting up in ODBC in windows 2008 64-bit R2. I was advised to install 32 bit . So in cmd prompt, from the location C:\Oracle\instantclient_11_2, ran odbc_install.
    3.Created the Environment variables as
    i) *TNS_ADMIN - C:\Oracle\instantclient_11_2*
    ii) *Oracle_Home - C:\Oracle\instantclient_11_2*
iii) *Edited the PATH variable with ;C:\Oracle\instantclient_11_2*
    4. Created the tnsnames.ora file in C:\Oracle\instantclient_11_2. Its content are as follows.
    clarity_dev =
         (DESCRIPTION =
         (ADDRESS_LIST =
         (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = claritydev.vip.its.ebay.com )(PORT = 1521))
         (CONNECT_DATA =
         (SID = clarity)
    5. From the folder %windir%\sysWOW64\odbacd32.exe, Opens ODBC Data Source Adminsitartor. In that I found my Oracle in instantclient_11_2 and added following details.
    Data Source Name : claritydev.vip.its.com
    TNS Service Name : clarity_dev
    User Id: clarity1
When I test connect it, I get error *ORA-12154:*
    *     TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified*
Could you please help, I've seen FAQs for this error, but couldn't find anything which solves. Is there any steps I'm missing? I've checked in DB properties. It uses SID not the Service Name.
    Thanks in Advance
    Sreeram

Oh, zip files. Right. I usually use the installer.
Try creating it yourself then and see if that does it. I don't normally use these zip files so I'm not sure if it goes somewhere else with them.
