Sever Session Cache, Read-Only

Since the objects in the server cache are shared, we should not modify the objects in cache. We are thinking of enforcing this in a programmatic way.
Does TopLink have a plan to enhance the current caching capability by allowing user to config the cache to be read-only, read-write, ... thus updates to the read-only cached objects (and possibly their associations) are not allowed? Or is this just too difficult for TopLink to implement?
Thanks a lot for your information.
Haiwei

Doug,
Please excuse my ignorance. But how does setting the flag on the postBuild() descrirptor method prevent anybody from modifying the server session object ?
I presume I have a class that is generic - PeristentObject that has a filed isEditable and I set this flag to false when the object is being built. But how can that help me from not modifying the cached object as I like ? I am free to invoke the setters am I not ?
Regards,
Aswin.
Haiwei,
TopLink has made some great enhancements to caching
and cache coordination in 10.1.3. Take a look at the
10.1.3 preview 3 for more details.
The Server cache's objects are to be considered
read-only. The UnitOfWork provides working copes
where changes are made and these are merged into the
shared cache on write. They are just read only to
prevent direct modification outside of a
transactional context.
I have worked with customers who maintained a flag on
their objects to know if setter should be permitted.
This was set to false (disallowing access) using the
postBuild descriptor event and then set to true
during the postClone method to allow modifications in
the UOW working copies. Its a little intrusive but
more portable then injecting a bunch of proprietary
TopLink code into your model.
Going forward we are looking at some simplification
solutions using AOP to eliminate the visibility of
the UnitOfWork and working copies so all of this is
automated behind the scenes. We hope to also preview
this when its available.

  • Caching read-only data in a weblogic cluster: Need Help

    Hello,
I'm working on the development of a web site that will be based on a weblogic cluster spread across several weblogic instances running on several unix boxes.
To avoid frequent hits to the database, I would like hold a huge amount of data in the application's in-memory cache. The idea is to query the database at startup and store the results in memory for the life of the JVM.
I have three questions around this:
    1. Is it advisable to store this data in the form of read-only entity beans?
    2. If not, what other options do I have?
    3. In some rare cases, a back-end script might change (and commit) data contained in one or two of these 64000 records. What is the best way of propagating these data changes across the cluster?
Any help in this regard would be greatly appreciated.

  • Session state protection and read-only items

I have a requirement to create a report + form for a database table. In the form, there is mandatory database column that needs to be displayed but it should be read-only and its value derived using values entered elsewhere on the screen.
It tried Display Only, Read Only and Disabled but they either fall foul of session state protection violation or ORA-01400: cannot insert NULL. The best method that I've found was to add readonly="readonly" the item element, but this causes the input item to lose its APEX classes and I'd prefer a declarative solution anyway.
    Anyone know the best approach?
    I've created a DEMO - http://apex.oracle.com/pls/apex/f?p=READONLY - which demonstrates the 4 methods.

However a possible explanation/justification for this behaviour is that the HTML Form Element Attributes are often used to specify a custom class for the item, so the default class is removed to prevent any conflicts. IMO APEX needs to provide declarative support for the use of multiple, space-separated class values in page, region, item etc attributes.
As a workaround in this case, just include the class in the HTML Form Element Attributes:
    class="number_field" readonly="readonly"

    Thanks for making the effort.

  • Can an unique index be created on read only cache group

    Hi
Can an unique index be created on read only cache group
    Regards
    Siva Kumar

No, I do not think so. Creating a unique index could cause autorefresh operations to fail if the data being refreshed contains duplicate values that would not be allowed by the index. You can create regular indexes on a table in a readonly cache group.

  • Using cache for read only data

In my application I have to display some read only data (in number of drop down present on several portlets)
this data might be driven from the database or from some XML/property file. Not decided yet.
for example : Country /state/City/Zip code etc..
Kindly let me know how can I implement the same in Weblogic Portal 10.0.
Do I have to use some third party caching mechanism like Hibernate cache for this
    or
Weblogic portal do support caching ??
Please suggest the all possible soultions to implement this.

Cache cache = CacheFactory.getCache("yourCache"); //any name can be passed, and you can create as many as you want , perhaps by functionality, perhaps by size etc. If you want to configure statically you must use this name in the xml file. If you define it in the xml file , you can administer the cache from Portal Admin
    cache.put("key","value");
    cache.get("key");
There are other advanced things you can do like Time To live / flushing / auto reload the cache which is all described in the javadoc

  • Toad read only sessions open a transaction  in DB?

    Hi,
When I check v$transaction, I see all TOAD and sqldeveloper sessions which are read only accounts. If I use the same user in sqlplus it won't appear in v$transaction. I am puzzled why these tools create a transaction for even select queries. How can i avoid these tools creating transaction(may be they are running begin trasaction for each session causing a transaction).

  • Suggestions required for Read-only cache group in timesten IMDB cache

    Hi
In IMDB Cache , If the underlying oracle RAC is having two schemas ( "KAEP" & "AAEP" , having same sturcture and same name of objects ) and want to create a Read-only cache group with AS pair in timesten.

    Table
        Abc1
        Abc2
        Abc3
    Schema
        AAEP
    Table
        Abc1
        Abc2
        Abc3
Can a read-only cache group be created using union all query  ?
The result set of the cache group should contain both schema records in timesten read-only cache group will it be possible ?
Will there be any performance issue?

You cannot create a cache group that uses UNION ALL. The only 'query' capability in a cache group definition is to use predicates in the WHERE clause and these must be simple filter predicates on the  tables in the cache group.
Your best approach is to create separate cache groups for these tables in TimesTen and then define one or more VIEWS using UNION ALL in TimesTen in order to present the tables in the way that you want.

Is there a way to avoid this?

I guess it is NotSupported. If not try Never.

  • Read Only Entity Bean will not cache

I'm using the Sun Java Application Server version 8.2. I've created a read only entity bean with a 900 second refresh. This bean has a findAll() method that I've created. The table it is reading from has only 22 rows of data that doesn't change (well, maybe 2 or 3 times a year).
As stated I've set the read-only property to true and the refresh to 900 seconds. I've also set the caching settings, which I guess i don't really need to mess with from the defaults.
I do not seem to be achieving any caching at all. My check for this is very simple. I simply load a drop down in the client application with these 22 values. After the intial load I add another row in the database. The newley added row always shows up in the drop down in real time. If i'm caching correctly I shouldn't see this value until the refresh time of 900 seconds. Is there something I am missing? I'm using NetBeans 5.0 to set the values of the entity beans and such.
    Thanks for the help!
    ryan

    Hi Ryan,
The 8.2 read-only bean implementation still executes non-findByPrimaryKey queries within the database.
If your application calls findByPrimaryKey or accesses a business method on one of the
read-only beans returned from a query, that will not result in a database access (unless a refresh
    period boundary is crossed).
We have added the additional optimization of caching specific result sets of non-findByPrimaryKey
read-only bean finders in the latest development version of Glassfish (V2).
    https://glassfish.dev.java.net/public/downloadsindex.html#Official_supported_builds
It will also be available in our Application Server release 9.1. There are no plans to backport this
    optimization to the 8.2 codebase.

I've same problem with an asus laptop, with one hdd. On the device I've some partitions (home, root, backup, var) but this error appears with 'home' only. Sometimes the mount options turns into "read-only", but only on home-partition (ext4, but root, var and a download-directory is ext4 too but they works well).
I found this: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 9#p1052099 - I hope this helps for me - and for you too

    Is /home on /dev/sda3?

  • Time machine disk permissions changed to read only

    Somehow, my Time Machine disk permissions have now changed tand my backups are failing;
    The permissions are:
Me - read/write, Staff  - read/write, Everyone - read only. I clicked on the lock and entered my system password, but I cannot change anything.
Then I ran Disk Utilities to repair and verify. Still nothing. I rebooted, logged out, logged back in, etc.
There is plenty of space left on the 2 GB drive. It is a Seagate GoFlex drive. This seems to be a new problems that has not surfaced before. My backups always ran flawlessly.
    What to do?

  • SSL Session cache persistence

    Hello,
I've been scratching my head for while on a problem concerning SSL session caching. Upon examining memory usage of the session cache I noticed that the number of cached sessions is reset at some point while new session are created. For example sometimes at around 300 -1500 sessions the number drops to under 10. I have set the session cache size to unlimited (via SSLSessionContext.setSessionCacheSize()) and session timeout to 24 hours (via setSessionTimeout()).
I noticed that this has probably something to do with garbage collection. I made a server application that receives SSL connections and every few seconds prints the number sessions in the cache and the amount of consumed memory (in megs). I also enabled garbace collection information printing and ran java VM with a maximum heap size of 512M. I ran a client application against it that continuously initializes a new sessions. Here's what I got:
    Sessions: 484     Memory: 1.7913589477539062
    [GC [DefNew: 503K->4K(576K), 0.0007350 secs] 2234K->1734K(3796K), 0.0008700 secs]

    Sessions: 490     Memory: 1.7832870483398438

And in between there's a garbage collection print "[Full GC...". Why is this? Shouldn't the session cache keep the sessions until there's either too many of the them or they get too old? Here only a few minutes have elapsed and memory consumption is under control (1 to 3 megs).

In my implementation I avoid session renegotiation as
much as possible to achieve high throughput. My goal
is to preserve sessions for the entire session
timeout time. This raises a few questions:Understood, but you also have to protect the server against resource exhaustion. It's in the client's interest to cache lots of sessions for a long time; the server's interest is to conserve resources so it can keep itself running.
You actually don't want to cache all the sessions, just the 'hot' ones, so you're better off having the SessionContext remove sessions on an LRU basis by having a finite limit, rather than just letting them be GC'd. The fact that so many sessions were collected in your runs indicates pretty severe memory usage.
    (1) Is there any way to tweak this behavior? For
example can make the sessions live longer by using
some GC flags for the VM? Allocate more heap space, or cache fewer sessions.
    (2) How about keeping regular references to all the
sessions in my application? That would save them from GC of course. But then you'll quickly discover that you really do need a finite limit.
    (3) Is the behavior of the session cache or the inner
workings of the SSL API in general documented
somewhere?Only in the source code of JSSE, and that's only a property of Sun's JRE implementation. Session caching is not even a required feature, and J2ME implementations for example generally don't do it at all.
