Several instances of Premiere CS5 in Task Manager
When you start and exit Premiere, then run it again, previous instance is not closed but new one is just added.
Any idea on how to fix this?
I'm using Win7 x64.
Here it is, June 23, more than a month after the CS5 release, and runaway Premiere Pro CS5 processes upon exit are still a problem.
The solution is simple: be sure to kill all child processes and close all I/O upon exit. Don't leave any threads. Don't lose track of any threads. Don't leave anything polling I/O. Sometimes things take care of themselves. Sometimes they don't, and then you have runaway processes on exit as is happening here.
It's not a graphics card issue. It's not a defragmentation problem. It's a very basic bug seen in C, C++, Java, etc ... doing system I/O.
Ignoring this bug won't make it go away. Could we please have a patch?

Microsoft Safety Scanner tool (freeware).
2. Reboot your PC.
3. Please download and update Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free
4. Reboot Windows in
Safe Mode and run a Full Scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.
5. Download and Run AdwCleaner (Freeware)
6. Reboot and Test.

Multiple instances of explorer.exe running in task manager
I got a dropper trojan virus on my computer that microsoft security essencials do not recognized but after running "superantispyware" antivirus I got discover it and delete it. After that, I still could find the infected files in my
administrator folders as .temp files and I just erased them. After that my computer started crashing and runing several instances of explorer.exe in the task manager with different memory values, some of them ascending to 350,000. I have set up my computer
to run just the basic services, I have tried windows in safe mode, ran other antivirus programs but still it is performing the same. As far as I have noticed other unusual process present are host.dll, dllhost.exe, and logonUI.exe. Any idea about it? Thanks

in Task Manager. Ran Security Essentials and several other anti-viruses, nothing found.

Restored system to a previous version, didn't work
Restored last system image, didn't work
Used System Repair Disk - ran Memory Diagnostic. Said it would give me report after reboot. Never saw a report after reboot. But only one instance of explorer.exe in task manager at that point. Took disk out, rebooted normally. After
20 minutes or so, the multiple instances were back.
Used Repair Disk again, ran Memory Diagnostic. Again, no report after reboot (leaving disk in machine both times), but only one instance running again.
Did this a few times with the same result, so now leaving disk in system and always boot from it.
Ran Security Essentials again, found that rovnix virus, removed, ran again, found it again.
Ran search for instances and found many. Here's an example:

I was going to reinstall entire system, but was from an Anytime Upgrade which now says it's invalid. Much more to story on that (calls to MS support, etc.). -
Multiple instances of firefox in task manager but FF doesn't open
- Windows XP SP3 (up to date with all critical updates)
- FireFox 25.0.1 (Note: Originally I had version 31 but a few days ago that stopped working)
- Norton Security Suite (the comcast version) up to date
- I have IE6 and Chrome 37 as backup browsers (Note: when FF stopped working, IE8 had also stopped working - page would open, only one system process, but page would never load)
Ran the following scans:
- SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition
- Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
- Ad-Aware Antivirus
- Spybot-S&D Start Center
Found a few non-critical yet potential infections (nothing too crazy)
Symptom persists as follows:
- fresh boot of computer
- open task manager (no instances of FF)
- open firefox - process appears in task manager and immediately goes to 50%
(nothing opens and nothing listed in Applications)
- open a second instance of firefox - 2nd process appears in task manager
(still nothing opens and neither instance appears in Applications
(the two instances continue to run at a cumulative 50% CPU usage - one might be 15% and the other running at 35% - or both running at 25% each)
- open a third instance of firefox
(still nothing opens, and all three instances show in task manager processes and cumulatively run at 50% - example:15 +15 + 20 or 10 + 15 + 25)
Troubleshooting:
restored a drive image from May 2014
- Note: Dec 2013 I had done a complete FRESH new install of Windows XP in prep for EOL and installed all updates, including SP3, so the image I chose from May was only 5 months old, but I chose that one because of some of the other programs I had installed that month and didn't want to go through that again
- Note #2: I have drive image run a monthly PQI backup of my C: drive and my R: drive) I have two hard drives 300G each whereas C: drive is OS only and R: drive is all my downloads, my documents, my photos, etc)
- after the image restored, I tried to open FF and IE8, neither app was problematic. FF auto updated from what version, I don't know, but it was on 31 when I realized the problem was BACK. Also ran some WIN critical updates, and IE8 stopped working too!
uninstalled IE8 (rolled back to IE6 and now IE works - but obviously I can not live with IE6 - I need to update that!) uninstalled FF31 (and deleted all temp and profile account folders) and installed a brand new copy of FF25 - whereas I immediately force stopped autoupdater and deleted the update files so I could remain on FF25.
Now FF25 will open only on the second instance of the process (the first will always go to 50% CPU, the second will open and run between 0 and 10 CPU, and only one application in Applications)
- I have learned that I can kill the 50% process using task manager or process explorer and total CPU usage will drop down to 0% - 10%
I can open many many tabs without any problems, and I can right click a link to open a new window and all is good, BUT if I use the desktop ICON, the quick launch ICON or the START > Programs > Icon, then the NEXT process will go to 50% and no second window will open
I have seen dozens of forums that have reported similar memory issues, but none have been resolved.
Can you help me? I don't want to upgrade IE6 to IE8 just yet, but I will not use it for anything but testing until I can upgrade. Note: besides being painfully slow, I have been switching to Chrome, but I have never enjoyed Chrome.... I am using FF right now to ask for help.
Any suggestions?I have the "techie" answer for all of you. According to the tier 2 support at Norton Help Desk, the latest live update from Norton "utilizes Visual Studio 2012 which enables SSE2 instructions" and my processor can not handle that.
He said they are "working on a solution" and offered to reply back on Wednesday / Thursday this week if a solution could be found... -
Multiple instances of firefox running cannot kill in task manager "Access denied"
There's no issue with starting a new instance after closing one, the "firefox is already running" error is not occurring (ok maybe once or twice a month, but it's not related to this problem, as my problem happens all the time.)
Apparently when closing a ff window it never fully stops. My computer slows down because of it and these multiple instances of firefox show up in Task Manager. When I try to kill the extra processes it just goes "BANG" and the "access denied" error dialog box appears. They are all running under my user account, and in CPU some are just 10 or 25 and some are in the hundreds and some are over a million. what the heck is going on?
I'm running Windows 7 64 bit and ff 23.0 but this has been happening since about ff 15 (?)When closing Firefox completely, it is important to close it using the <i>Exit</i> button, located inside of the Firefox/File menu.
Another cause to this problem could be a Firefox preloader. Do you have any programs that will load Firefox automatically? They are supposed to improve start time.
You can also '''try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.

Firefox 3.6.3 fails to close completely, leaving an open instance in Task Manager.
Firefox 3.6.3 fails to close itself, leaving an open instance in Task Manager of Windows 7 x64 each time the browser is closed. The instance needs to be closed manually in order to successfully start new browser session. This seems to happen in OEM version of Windows 77. There are no issues with a retail version of the OS. The problem started with a fresh, new install of Windows 7 with no other software installed.

Distinguishing Between Instances of the Java launcher in Task Manager
I'm interested in being able to distinguish between multiple instances of the standard Java launcher, specifically javaw, in the Windows Task Manager. The multiple javaw instances are Java applications that are part of a commercial software product. The installation and launching of the Java applications is already handled and I'm merely interested in being able to tell them apart in the Task Manager.
Are there any obvious problems/issues, including licensing issues, related to creating multiple renamed copies of the standard Java launcher javaw that would then be launched by our software product to allow them to be distinguishable in the Windows Task Manager?Technically, it works - as for the licensing, you need to resolve that question by reading Sun's license that you agreed to by downloading Java - and maybe consulting Sun. CS5- CS6 upgrade hangs, locks windows task manager, does nothing else
Got the CS6 Design Standard Upgrade, hoping to upgrade from CS5 Design Premium. Could that be the problem? I don't need everything in Premium and this stuff is ridiculously expensive.
Anyway, I put the disk in, nothing happens. I run set-up.exe, the disk spins up, then nothing continues to happen. I've watched it for up to 5 minutes and nothing.
Set-up.exe is not in Applications, but it is in Processes in windows task manager. However, there is no actual activity at all. When I try to end the process, WTM locks up. I have to either hard reboot or eject the disk in order to recover.
What gives? I can post PDApp.log if need be, but I don't know how much help it'll be.
W7 Pro 64bitUnfortunately, I don't really *know* if there are any helpful errors listed because the only way to get the update to stop is to eject the disk, which I'm sure puts errors in there. For example, here are the last 5 lines from the log, from the last time I tried to upgrade:

Adobe Premiere CS5 and Open Directory users - Premiere fails to start
We have several class rooms with desktops that are configured for Open Directory.
When a student logs in he's actually working in his home folder on the server and his user is also managed by the server.
This works fine for all the applications that we're using except for Adobe Premiere CS5 and Adobe After Effects CS5. Whenever a student tries to start one of them the application will hang and only a force quit can stop it. It is impossible to start these applications.
However, it is possible to use Premiere and After Effects using a local standard on the desktops. But I don't want to go that route. I want the managed users to be able to use those applications.
Has anyone found a solution for this?
Are you able to use this applications in a same environment?
I've played a lot with the permissions on the library, system and Adobe folders, but the problem doesn't seem to be related to them.
Setup:
AFP Server: Xserve intel running Mac OS X Server 10.6.5
OD Servers: Mac Mini Servers running Mac OS X Server 10.6.5
Clients: iMacs intel running Mac OS X 10.6.6Safe Mode disables a lot of drivers and services, like networking. That would seem to indicate that something is running on your system that interferes somehow.
I'm just not sure how you'd go about tracking that down. -
Premiere CS5 (win7 x64) won't recognize my Mini-DV camcorder.
I have Premiere Pro CS5 installed on a Windows 7 64-bit system.
When I try to Capture, I keep getting the error message: "Can't Activate Recorder. Try Resetting Camera."
the whole set-up worked fine on my XP system with Premiere Pro 1.5.
Extra info:
The Mini-DV camcorder is a Panasonic NV-DS33 (but personally I think it has nothing to do with my camera because I have seen so many threads online regarding this issue and no-one has any decent answer!)
the firewire cable is fine because it works on my old XP computer.
in premiere, if I change the camera to an HDV, then suddenly I can CONTROL the camera, but I can't capture)
Windows 7 (x64 bit) recognizes the Camcorder in the Device Manager (and says it is working properly).
I have tried several other DV capturing softwares (Stoik, Scenalyzer, WinDv). I have even tried my old Premiere Pro 1.5 on my 64-bit system.. and NONE OF IT WILL CAPTURE MY CAMCORDER!
This is very frustrating. I need my new win7 (x64) Premiere CS5 to capture successfully. I have spent a LOT of money on this new system. What on earth is the problem?
(i saw one thread on a similar issue regarding a 32-bit installation of Win 7, and it is marked as ANSWERED! but in my opinion, (from the amount of forums on many other sites) this issue is definitely not fixed.
is there any update to Premiere CS5? or a workaround? or anything else I should know?
PS: it is not an option for me to keep using my old computer to Capture video and then transfer it to my new system. i am passing my old system on to another person.

[email protected]I agree that the "Legacy" FW driver solution should be a stickie, or FAQ. Since Win7-64 was released, it has caused no end to the grief. Maybe Jeff, or Todd will have a better solution to getting the word out.

Acrobat X intermittently won't launch, multiple Acrobat.exe processes hanging in task manager
Apologies if this is in the wrong community area - I was unsure where it belongs.
This is an intermittent issue, but does happen several times a day.
Regardless of what method is used to launch Acrobat (double-clicking a PDF, clicking the shortcut in the taskbar, selecting Acrobat from the start menu), often the application won't launch. Upon investigation, task manager shows multiple instances of Acrobat.exe, although the application is not running (see the image below). Ending all Acrobat.exe processes does allow Acrobat to launch.
Any thoughts as to what might be causing this, as well as a more permanent fix? The workaround of constantly ending multiple processes is becoming cumbersome.
We are running Acrobat X Pro in Windows 7. I also have several CC 2014 apps installed (as well as a couple of earlier versions required for plugin functionality).This happens all the time in my company with several installs of Acrobat.
The only way to fix this for us is to end each process in Task Manager as you have pointed out.
It is very time consuming in our workflow as we each operator deals with hundreds of PDFs daily, and has to do this End Process procedure several times a day.
We have done several tests and nothing seems to stop this from happening. -
Premiere CS5 crashes a lot. It is "box" version, not download, in Mac Pro, please help.
My Mac Pro with Premiere CS5 crashes a lot. It is a "box" version, not a download, I have searched for updates and installed them and it still crashes, usually when rendering or encoding. My comp is a Mac Pro with 8 gigs of memory, 12 core, nice and fast. Do I need to download the whole program and then install the updates? If I install the download version will I loose the projects I am working on? I don't mean actually loose them, but be unable to open them and work on them? Also, supposedly version 5.5 fixes everything. If I download 5.5 will it really fix everything and will projects in progress with my current version open properly in version 5.5? (I thought it was a good idea to have the "box " version rather than a download but now it doesn't look that way) Any help GREATLY appreciated, thanks, Steve

Thanks for the great contributions in this forum.
I am having trouble with a multicam project with 5 video layers of HD (2 layers 1440 x 1080 HDV and 3 layers 1920 x 1080 from Canon DSLR's) at 29.97.
The playback performance is stuttering and freezing but the sound keeps going. The sequence is setup as HDV 1080i30 (60i).
I wanted to know if my system specs. up to scratch to handle this multicam edit? Should I expect a smooth uninterupted edit or are my expectations too high?
Has anyone else have similar issues and how did they reslove them.
GPU is definitely enabled as the renderer, but the processor is maxing out.
The overall computer RAM usage is 2.8 Gb, but watching the processes in the task manager, Premiere seems to not use more the 2Gb RAM.
I have distributed the video across 3 hard drives plus a separate OS drive.
I have just upgraded my videocard to a Gigabyte GTX470 hoping take advantage of the mercury engine.
Computer specs as follows:

I will start with a RAM increase then try the CPU. I don't normally have this many heavy layers at once. It is a one-off job.

Adobe 10.1.7 will not close in task manager after you exit the program. High cpu

Updated to 10.1.7 and noticed that when you close the program an instance of acrobat stays open in task manager with high 50%+ cpu usage. Will not close at all unless you end task. if you open adobe again a new instance opens again consuming more cpu and cripples the machine with high cpu. This is on win 8 64bit machine. Had the previous release 10.1.6 working for some time on the same machine with no issues.
Thank you in advanceIdentical issue with Acrobat XI Pro on Windows 8 Pro 64 bit. After viewing PDF file, upon closing Acrobat, a new Background Process starts called Adobe Acrobat (32 bit) uses 18% of cpu. I have left run for three to four hours and does not close. If I open another PDF file and then close, a second Background Process of Adobe Acrobat (32 bit) start, also using 18% of cpu. I was able to open a third PDF file and upon closing a third Background Process of Adobe Acrobat (32 bit) start, also using 18% of cpu. I did not try more. All three consume over 50% of processor and after an hour does not close. Fan and cpu begin to run hot so I manual End Task. I tried Repair Acrobat Installation command, did not fix. After searching forum used the Adobe Reader and Acrobat Cleaner Tool (http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html) to uninstall. Then downloaded Acrobat XI Pro from My Adobe account login. Reinstalled software. Issue gone, could not replicate even after several hours of trying. Then Checked for Updates. After updates installed, loaded and brought to version 11.0.3, problem returned as before. I have PDF files on both local drive and NAS, been able to recreate issue on both. In a PDF intensive environment, I was having to leave the task manager up and occasionally stop Background Process of Adobe Acrobat (32 bit) so as to keep processor usage and fan speed down, thanks to Goateye01 for the suggestion, I now leave Acrobat open and close the files, this way the background process hang does not occur. Additional Note, only able to create issue with standalone application, issue does not occur when in IE10 and viewing PDF files. Hopefully a fix or helpful guidance coming soon?

Premiere CS5 poor ram usage...
I'm running premiere pro cs5 on windows 7, with the following specs:
i7 860 quad core
8 Gigs of Ram
NVidia XFX 7600GS
1TB Samsung F3 Drives - Raid 1
500 gig scratch drive
I'm trying to export some HDV files, 24p, Cineform etc, but I'm receiving very poor performance. When exporting my CPU usage is only 25%-30%, which I think is rather pathetic. I've assigned 6gig of ram to premiere, why is it using so little memory? I've found rendering footage in Virtual Dub uses about 80% of my CPU, which is much more to my satisfaction. Is there a way to adjust premiere to work more efficiently?
Thanks...Even though you reserved 6Gigs of Ram for Premiere, The OS itself will probably use/reserve more than the 2 Gigs you've left it (AFAIK). After the OS and the other programs you might have running at the same time take/reserve what they need, I bet there's a lot less than those 6Gigs Premiere can use.
About the CPU, make sure you have Priority for PPro and the Encoder set to "Normal", or better yet, High or even Realtime. Should be Normal by default but doesn't hurt to double check (Task Manager > Processes ). I know some folks are saying this doesn't make a difference but I've found it does on my system, albeit not a lot.
