Several issues on Portege M100

Hello,
Forgive me in advance if this sounds a bit sketchy but my hubby is the useful one with these things but as his time is limited with work, I thought I would try and get some help in advance for when he gets home.
I purchased a M100 to take with us on our holidays mainly to just watch DVDs for the kids and some web browsing so didnt need anything fancy or new the guy we got it from has installed Ubuntu 9.10 Linux.
The main problem we are having is
1. We cant connect to the internet, the wireless LED light on top is still amber (I presume it should be green once all is well and connected), even though my husband has done the usual things that has connected our other 3 laptops to the wireless. He downloaded the user manual and it states to activate the wireless to press shift+F8, but this doesnt seem to be doing anything.
2. We cant play DVDs, the guy we got if from says he burned a CD from it, but when we asked about watching DVDs he said he didnt try any to know, when we insert the DVD it says we have to download a codex, which hubby is fine with doing if he could connect to the internet.
I hope all that made sense Please advice on what we could do
Many thanks

Portege M100 is pretty old notebook model and definitely not supported for Linux operating system so if you want to use all functions described in users manuals you must use supported WXP.
What you should do is to install operating system using original recovery installations CDs.
Did you get them with your notebook?
If you don't have them install WXP using original Microsoft WXP installations disc. All necessary drivers, tools and utilities you can download from Toshiba support page under http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp
If you need right installations order list please let us know.

  • Several issues on Portege R500

I got this new Portege R500 (PPR50E) and the fan noise is driving me crazy! I can't believe why the processor has to run all the time so hot even if it's not on heavy load. Even some light online surfing starts the fan rolling and the whining of it is really annoying. I tried to find software that puts the CPU to halt state, like CPU Idle, but no luck, none of the old apps work with this CPU. The temp is all the time around 60C which is quite a lot even thought I have customized the power management profile to use only the lightest load.
Does anyone have any ideas how to force the CPU to halt state?
I'm also struggling to get standard 1280x720 60Hz resolution to work for an external projector but that's another story.. DTD Calculator does not do it its magic and now I have to start hacking the registry manually...
Then sound card driver. I'd like to use two audio apps at the same time but the driver does not allow sharing of resources which means I can't use Amplitube and Media player at the same time.
The CPU is supposed to be 1,2 GHz dual core and with 2GB memory the machine should run pretty nicely. BUT Vista spoils the fun! This is the second time I use Vista on a laptop and now I'm fully convinced it's a big resource hog and no good OS. R500 should come with Win XP SP3!
I am sorry because I have to whine but I'll return this one to the dealer if there is no solution to these.

    >In my opinion some hardware designer didn't do his work properly
OK it is your opinion but you must also understand that hardware designers do not have easy job. As you know almost every month we can read about new technology or about some new features. We have now new OS Vista. This OS uses more resources than older WXP. The hardware must be adapted to new Microsoft requirements. If you see the notebook design you will agree with me that Portege R500 is really nice business notebook. Small and you can take it everywhere. So powerful hardware is placed into extremely small enclosure.
The hardware designer must find a good compromise to all this. At the end, Toshiba uses best hardware components for business line notebooks and this expensive hardware must be protected properly. If you must make decision between louder cooling fan and high risk for hardware I believe you will also choose the first option.
It is really not so easy. Anyway, I still believe you have a nice piece of hardware.
By the way: I do not know which projector you use but I can say that a friend of mine use his R500 for power point presentation in our meeting room and it works well. We have Toshiba projector. I do not know the exact model but if you want, I can ask which one he uses.

  • Several severe Issues with the Nokia 808 (camera, ...

    Hey Guys,
I was a avid user of the Nokia N8 with its amazin camera features. So i made the switch to the 808. While the initial Impression was awesome, when traveling over the last few days my experience wasn't that great. There are several in part very severe issues i am having:
1st and foremost: the cameras automatic shutter speed is too low for nearly every shot. No, my hands are not too shaky, I've doing professional photgraphs since 10 years now and am able to shoot with 1/10th and lower. Yet, when enjoying a boat tour in Copenhagen and taking pictures of the passing scenerey, nearly all images have noticeable motion blur due to the slooooow movement of the boat. And this in bright daylight. The only way to bypass this was by using the sports mode - but then again you are limited to 5 megapixels. You can also notice the very long shutter time when simply taking a picture of your local metro station. MOst of the people walking by have motion blur.
This brings me to issue number 2: I really don't get why i am unable to influence the focus method. You get the Landscape and Sports mode (which use a fixed focus) but that's not available in the creative mode. So even when doing simple panoramic shots in the creative mode in 5, 8 or 34 megapixels the camera has to focus. Problem here: when shooting panoramic stills the focus sometimes decides to focus on a nearby person instead of the 'big picture'.
Issue number 3: When manually selecting a very low ISO value (for decent night shots) the Camera makes that artificial shutter sound WAY before the shutter actually closes. Therefore you THINK that taking the picture is already done and move the camera around. This results in awful images
Issue number 4: Battery usage is way to high on the 808. I was able to take my N8 around town all day, shoot over 300 (Yes, 300) images, do a bit of navigation, email, browse and tak without the battery being drained below 15%. I ran out of battery with the 808 after only 136 images, 15 mins of Navigation, Wireless Lan and 3G turned OFF. So the entire point of having a device that combines phone and camera and lasts all day is simply gone I had usage times of 3-4 days with the N8 (when not on vacation) - the 808 is drained after the first night under the very same conditions.
To sum it up - i'd like to see the following things fixed/added:
    - Behaviour of the automatic shutter
    - Option to manually select shutter
    - Option to select different focus methods (on / off ) in creative mode
    - BATTERY USAGE NEEDS TO BE IMPROVED!
    - black on white color theme for email
    - ability to select multiple images in album view like before
    - ability to get additional information on the image like with the n8 when you press and hold and select 'details'
    - Ablity to turn of autofocus in video mode
    - when deleting an email while reading the email, display the previous mail instead of the inbox
Would be great to get some feedback from you guys on that!
    thanks
    -daniel
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Hello…I own an 808 PureView device. At the outset, I must congratulate you for creating such a marvelous device. It’s in all dimensions a brilliant Smartphone and has no major lags except a few which I would like to mention as suggestions to improve the general smoothness and usefulness of its User Interface (henceforth-UI).
The in-built gallery lacks ‘mark multiple items’ option which, if integrated, can be fruitfully used to delete or send multiple items though Bluetooth. Also, the in-built gallery lacks ‘renaming’ function which would otherwise be helpful in organizing the gallery items, and in giving custom names which are easy to remember and deal with.
The generic MUSIC PLAYER lacks the track/music search function from within the music player, and so, to search a song out of the vast collection, the user has to use the generic SEARCH application by exiting or minimizing the music player, which in itself is a cumbersome exercise. The search function, if integrated into the music player, will help a great deal in making the music experience really customized and precise as also time saving.
The in-built VIDEO editing options available in the video viewing dashboard are relatively much naïve and rudimentary as compared to PureView’s lesser predecessor, the N8. Now, since 808 is a full-fledged camera Smartphone, it is bit logical on part of the user to expect the video editing dashboard to be as efficient and complete as the photo editing dashboard of the same is.  Advance options like adding music clip can be added to the video editing console to mitigate the need of using any third party application to do so, and thus, it will further enhance the utility drawn from the cell-phone UI in terms of video editing and viewing.
The generic MESSAGING application has the default view as CONVERSATIONS view and manual selection every time is required to switch the view to FOLDERS mode. If there had been an option to make a choice in setting the folders view or the conversations view as default as per users convenience, it would have been again a smooth messaging experience.
To end up, the generic CONTACT application lacks the facility to edit the contact labels unlike the one which was available in S60 V3 devices (I owned N79 prior to owing 808 PureView and so I am well aware of this utility). Facility to edit the contact labels makes it easy to differentiate between multiple contact numbers of the same contact so as to have an ease of remembrance and clarity of use.
I earnestly hope that Nokia will incorporate some or all of these suggestions in the next-to-come firmware upgrade for Belle FP1 devices. These modifications/additions, if done and made, will make the Belle OS fully competent with its various other contemporaries as it just lacks these things but otherwise is a fluid and extremely useful OS. I request you to kindly pay due heed and consideration to my observations and work towards making the Belle OS an all-encompassing mobile platform. Thanking You.

  • I have several issues that I hope you can help me out with. I am a professional photographer with a Mac with OS X 10.9.4: - I can only make ONE contact sheet in CS6 (from AUTOMATE) from pictures indicated in Bridge. If I want to make another contact sheet

I have several issues that I hope you can help me out with. I am a professional photographer with a Mac with OS X 10.9.4:
    - I can only make ONE contact sheet in CS6 (from AUTOMATE) from pictures indicated in Bridge. If I want to make another contact sheet I need to shut down and restart CS6.
    - Camera RAW: if I change any setting in Camera RAW (except exposure), having first optimized the exposure, the exposure will automatically return to zero. Sometimes when I've set exposure and cropped the picture in Camera RAW Plug-In, the effects are lost just by opening the picture in CS6.
    - Sometimes if I crop a picture in Camera RAW, it may be impossible to open it again from Bridge!
    - I cannot do lens corrections in Camera RAW, at all. The Camera RAW comment is that "it cannot load the correct lens type". Why?

Are you writing that when you select  a large number of images in the bridge  like a hundred thumbnails  when you then use Bridge menu Tools>Photoshop>Contact Sheet II that Photoshop only produces a single contact sheet for the first few thumbnails and fails to produce additional contact sheets for the other selected thumbnails? Photoshop contact sheet II script should create as many contact sheet as needed  for the numbers of thumbnails selected.  Perhaps the script is hung or you have exhausted  your machine resources.
ACR Crop tool does not crop the RAW file it records crop settings to be used during the conversion process.    Camera RAW DATA is not altered.  The only changes made to RAW Files is ACR Metadata may be added.  Anything you do in ACR can be un-done in ACR.    If you can not open a RAW File in ACR the Files is either corrupt or from a new camera ACR does not support yet.  ACR should not corrupt RAW files.
If you do not have a lens profile for ACR I think you should still be able to do lens correction manually in ACR.
Some of what you write I don't follow could you post some screen captures of your problems often a picture helps.

  • Portege M100 - Toshiba Utilities setup hangs

I have a Portege M100 (prob M100-112) that has been "hacked" about by its previous owner and I am trying to re-install all the tools and drivers.
In particular I want to upgrade the BIOS to v1.50 (from 1.30).
The BIOS upgrade tool (windows) complains that the common modules are not installed, but when I attempt to install the common modules the installer just hangs with no user interface visible and no errors.
I have re-installed all the items before it in the recommended order - but no luck :-(
Any help and constructive help welcom

  • Portege M100 runs at 600MHz after BIOS/FRIMWARE upgrade

    Hello,
I got a Portege M100 this week, installed Debian GNU/Linux (Sid) on it and nearly everything was fine.
Then I upgraded to the latest BIOS/FIRMWARE (from V1.10 to V1.50) and now my Pentium M 1200 MHz runs at half speed.
I can't also load cpufreq, which controls the cpu speed.
I've seen that this problem is already known, so:
Will there come a new BIOS/FIRMWARE fix for that?

    Hi Gypsyman,
    Thanks for answering.
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=23847&messageID=87452
Is what I meant with "Is already known".
    But that doesn't help me...
I tried that option Battery->"Processing Speed", Battery->"CPU Sleep Mode",
    Battery->"Cooling Method" and Configuration->"Device Config."
in all 24 different combinations, but nothing worked for me.
For updating I used the CD-image from toshiba.de,
which first updated the Firmware and then the BIOS.
If the CD-Image contains the same programs like the floppy image,
then the Firmware Upgrade should have been done with
    CHGFIRMA.EXE (V2.25) EC42NOBB.bin (maybe V1.30)
the BIOS Upgrade should have been done with
    CHGBIOS.EXE (V4.34) BIO0004T.COM (V1.50).
Before I upgraded I had BIOS (V1.10) and Firmware (unknown).

  • Portege M100 screen/hinge problem

I have a Portege M100 and have a slight problem with the screen
The left screw has come out & been lost. This has left the screen very "wobbly" and it seems to have popped out of a catch or two, just on the left side as the case/back of screen seem to gape slightly from the front at times down by the hinge.
I would like to try to replace the screw & get it back to "normal" but I can't find any instructions or advice as to how the screen fits - can anyone help me to clip it back together & rplace the screw?
(please don't make comments about how old it is, it's what I have & I can't afford to replace it at the moment!)

    Hi
I think there are no manuals or instructions how to replace something on a notebook. Such technical documents are not for public, they only available for authorized service provider.
So I would recommend an ASP because there you can also get the right spare part for your notebook and the technicians help you to repair it. :)

I've edited my NEF photos in lightroom and have tried to export to a formatted CD. When I try, I have several issues. I either see in the top left corner that the files are ready to go to CD but there is no further instruction or I get the pop up message that the files are offline or missing??

Just for background, in what format are you exporting your images?  Also, are you able to export them to your hard drive in your chosen format?  I haven't tried exporting directly to CD, but if you're able to export to hard drive and copy to CD, that may be one solution.

  • Portege M100 - Doesn't go in stand by

I have a Portege M100. For no apparent reason it no longer goes into standby mode automatically if left on battery power. I have checked power saver settings and these all appear to be ok eg standby after 5 mins etc.
    Any ideas?

    hi RogerGrand,
i assume you're using xp as operating system...
pls compare the settings in the "toshiba power saver" and the "energy options" of the os.
    - on the first index tab on the bottom you should see anything like "stand-by"
    - and on top "energy scheme" you should see the "power saver" ...
if there is something mixed up the system dont know which action should take place...
    compare and check this settings!
and check if there is any precess in background doing a job and prevents from hibernation/standby.

  • Several issues with iTunes Match

I recently bought the iTunes Match service. And I've run into several issues here.
    1) The music in my library was purchased months ago with another Apple ID that I've forgotten. They're all currently available on iTunes Store with the same content (I've verified this). But when I tried to match these songs, 10 percent of them failed. For example, when I attempted matching Beyonce's self-titled album, which I bought on the day of its release, only "Pretty Hurts" successfully matched. The others are all in "Uploaded" status. This is very confusing.
    2) I understand that recently there're a lot of songs being upgraded into "Mastered For iTunes" version. But some tracks (shown in Matched status) in my library were downloaded a long time ago and don't carry that quality. So I deleted the local copies of them, and re-downloaded from iCloud. But then the songs remain to be the original version instead of the updated ones. For example, in Lana Del Rey's album "Born To Die", songs like "Born To Die" "Video Games" "Blue Jeans" "Dark Paradise" all don't carry the "Mastered For iTunes" logo after my attempt.
    3) Before I turned on iTunes Match, all albums carry the option "Show Complete Album" (I rarely purchase the entire album, usually I just pick songs to buy). But after I re-downloaded the entire library, that option is missing. All I see is this.
I've been upsetting with these problems these days. It would be really helpful if any of you guys have some solutions. Thank you.

When I went to restore my phone, I may have found the cause of these problems. I never deleted all of my original synced songs before enabling iTunes Match.
When I just went to do the restore, I figured I'd delete all of my songs, then disable iTunes Match. After deleting about 3.5 GB of music and disabling iTunes Match, I ran the sync to backup my iPhone. It said there was still 2.2 GB of music. I checked my phone just in case and there was 2.2 GB there, probably the original synced songs that I never removed.
Anyway, I'm doing the restore now just in case and will respond tomorrow with how everything is working.

  • Several issues - are they related?

I've been experiencing several issues with my new IMac, and I wonder if they are related.
First, the Adobe Flash plug in for Safari has been quitting unexpectedly. Then, Safari would start closing on its own. Finally, IPhoto also would suddenly quit.
This morning, I tried a manual update of software. It stopped about 3/4 of the way through with a message that the update may have been corrupted. It will try the install again the next time Updater runs.
I thought of putting these issues out there on their respective software forums, but I am guessing that they are all related since they all happened at the same time. Thank you, in advance, for any clues you can give to solving this mystery.

    Hi-
Please clarify- which iMac are you using? One of the new 27" or 21" iMacs? If not, what exactly?
First, the Adobe Flash plug in for Safari has been quitting unexpectedly. Then, Safari would start closing on its own. Finally, IPhoto also would suddenly quit.
What exactly is happening here? Is some flash playing, and then suddenly without any error message Safari quits? What website? All or just some (or random?)
Immediately after safari quits, iPhoto also quits? No error message- it just quits?
This morning, I tried a manual update of software. It stopped about 3/4 of the way through with a message that the update may have been corrupted. It will try the install again the next time Updater runs.
Please explain- exactly what do you mean by 'Manual Update of software?" Exactly what file did you download from Apple.com to do this manual update?
I thought of putting these issues out there on their respective software forums, but I am guessing that they are all related since they all happened at the same time. Thank you, in advance, for any clues you can give to solving this mystery.
There are a lot of variables going on here- maybe it is all related, or maybe not. We need to isolate some of these variables so we can troubleshoot in a systematic way.

  • Portege M100 - How to replace the RTC battery?

Hello, the RTC battery of my Portege M100 is flat. I manage to order one from the internet but I can't locate it. I dismantle almost every part of the computer, but if someone could just guide me and give the procedure du replace it, it would be great. Thanks in advance!!

    Hi friend,
its easy to replace the RTC battery on your machine. I did it already and I had no problems during the replacement, I mean it was a little bit tricky to find the batt. but I will give everything from my experience. ;)
Look first at the wireless lan card, theres a slot an under the slot is the minipci-wlan-card located. Near the wireless lan card slot is some little cover, this cover must be removed (gently). The RTC battery is located in some white insulator, but before peeling that little battery out, you must disconnect the battery from the mainboard. After disconnecting it, just lift the RTC up and place the new one there.
Thats all, unfortunately I cannot serve you with some pics, so you will have to imagine it by yourself. ;)
    Good luck and greets
P.s.: If you feel uncomfortable in replacing the batt, then ask some techie to help you.

  • Several Issues on new Satellite laptop

I purchased a Toshiba Satellite C55D-B5203, part #PCSN4U-02U01U within the last month and I am having several issues with it.  It came with Windows 8 and immediately updated to 8.1. As far as I am concerned, I am a computer dummy. So, any replies, please be very basic.1. When I first boot up the laptop, the keyboard will not work.  The only way I have gotten it to work is to hold down the right shift key for about 30 seconds.  This works but I dont feel like I should have to do this every time I start the computer.2. Occasionally, when I type a website in the search engine, it just refreshes and stays on the current page.  Example: Home page is Yahoo.com, I type in google.com.  It will let me type the website, but the processing circle goes around and just stays on yahoo.com. I have even tried searching for a site in search engine on the webpage and it still does not work.  After 10 or 15 attempts, I can typically get it to start working. 3. Videos - more times than not, when a video pops up, like on facebook or youtube, the screen turns green.  The audio will play but no video. I tried going to Internet Options, Advanced, and making ure the top checfk box is checked.  It is. Still nothing.  I have even tried unchecking the box and then it will work for a little bit. I would reset back to factory default but I have purchased office and quicken that I downloaded (don't have a hard copy) and i don't want to have to buy them again.  Can anyone help?  I am about ready to throw this laptop in the trash and try a different brand.  I appreciate any help
