Several kinds of jpg file types
Hi everyone
I have just installed Nikon Scan 4.0.2 and it works well.
When I scan images in jpg mode, they become "Nikon Scan JPEG" files. The default open action is with "Nikon Scan 4".
However, when I scan images in Vuescan, they end up as plain old jpgs, which open by default with Preview.
How can I harmonise so images scanned with Nikon Scan become ordinary jpgs so that every jpg on my system will open with Preview by default?
Thanks a tonne
/p
Hi pullman,
You .jpg files are all the same, it's how they've been assigned that's different. On a Mac, files have Type and Creator codes (from OS 9 and earlier).
Consider .eps files in Windows. Only ONE program can be assigned to an extension, so if Photoshop is set to open .eps, then it will try to open any .eps you click on, regardless of whether it belongs to PS or not. May have been from Illustrator, Quark, Freehand, etc. doesn't matter.
The Mac keeps those same .eps files separated by their codes. All .eps files get a Type code of EPSF, but have different Creator codes. Photoshop's is 8BIM. Illustrator is ART5, and so on. Using this double entry system keeps similar files separated by the application they belong to. OS X is moving away from Type and Creator codes in favor of the more modern Uniform Type Identifiers. But the concept is the same. The UTI data keeps file associations in order.
The reason I explain this is to help you understand why your JPEG files are doing this. The codes associated with Nikon Scan are logically linked to Nikon Scan since it's the creating application, so that's what they try to open in. VueScan is saving the files with a different code, so they open instead in Preview.
Anyway, the solution should be to just click on any .jpg once to highlight it and press Command+I, or choose Get Info from the file menu. Change the Open With choice to Preview. Click on the Change All button. From now on, all .jpg files should open in Preview.

[fixed (kinda-)] PCManFM lost file type associations after last update
Hi there,
I just updated my system and it happened something strange: PCManFM lost all the file associations. Result is, for whatever file i click, it asks me how to open the file.
If i right click a file, selecting "Open with … → Open with another program" the "Recommended Applications" tab is empty, on the "All Applications" tab i can select applications as i want, but i can't select, that i want to use this application always.
Folders work as expected, this only happens to files. But not to all files. I still can open text files as expected.
Shell output of PCManFM start, rightclick a jpeg file, open with Geeqie, close Geeqie, close PCManFM
dirk ~ $ pcmanfm

The CRITICAL stuff appears right after starting PCManFM.
Last updates (maybe there was an PCManFM update or other update the day before, but i noticed the failure today after updating one of my machines and made a list of updated files before i updated another machine of mine)

This happens to i686 and x86_64 systems. xdg-utils is not installed on one system but installed to the other systems, but it makes no difference.
Any hints?
Kind regards,

How can a .mov be an "unsupported file type"?
I've saved a PowerPoint presentation as a .mov and it plays fine on its own (as a quicktime movie.) It also shows up as availabe file in my "movies" pane. However, when I try to drag it into a drop zone, I get the following error message: "Unsupported File Type: Unknown Format" but it's a .mov file!??
What's going on?
MacBook Mac OS X (10.4.8)I'm going to answer my own question so others may benefit
After some serious thinking I did the following and it worked: I imported the .mov file (in this case a PowerPoint presentation) into iMovie where it became a simple clip, then saved that as a new .mov, and now it's suddenly recognizable to iDVD! Simple, huh? I bet it works with all kinds of "unsupported file types" as long as you can get them into iMovie...

How do I convert a folder containing multiple jpg files to pdfs
I have to convert several folders containing jpg files to individual pdf files. I can't seem to do this.
You could use Acrobat XI Pro to Create PDF from Files.
This process lets you select supported file formats and outputs PDF.
Be well... -
Error when Combining Multiple File Types
I can't combine multiple file types into one pdf, e.g. .docx and .xlsx files. The combine feature only seems to be working to combine .pdf and .jpg file types. An error message stating the below appears. Does anyone have a solution?
Thank you.no i can't seem to do that either. the only way I have found to get around it. It's long winded... i export the jpgs from Indesign CS4, then take the jpgs into photoshop CS4 and baiscally resave over the top the of the original jpg without changing any settings, this will then let me combine them in Acrobat Pro 9. for now i will be doing it that way but if anyone knows of another way that would be great.

Want to scan to text file on hp oj8600, software indicates only pdf or jpg file creation
want to scan to text file on hp oj8600, software indicates can do. However printer system software only allows pdf or jpg file type creation.
Hello @Richf95,
Welcome to the HP forums.
I understand that you are trying to save scans as a text file.
I would like to help.
PDF has become the standard file type used when scanning/saving a document.
Most printers will not have text as a default option.
Try the following:
Open the HP scan utility
In the lower left hand corner select 'Create New Shortcut...'
Name your new short cut. I went with Text.
In the next window select the file tab.
In the drop down menu, select Text.
This should create a shortcut that will allow you to save scans as a .txt file.

Newbie stuck - how do I change the file type of a photo I am formatting from a TIFF to a JPG?
I am new to Aperture and struggling to figure out some of the basics, even with the tutorials. I need to submit a photo for an art competition - the master is a TIFF and I need a JPG under 1.8 MB - how do I change the new version's file type and keep it with the master?
Thank you in advance.I can't recommend the method proposed by Carolyn Samit; in fact, I recommend ignoring it.
Aperture is large, complex, and can take some time to learn to use. It is also quite powerful, and can handle nearly all -- or all -- common tasks you throw at it.
I have written a very short guide to Aperture which was intended to provide some firm footing for those getting started. I humbly suggest that you start with a quick review.
One of the things that presents a bit of disorientation for new users is that, in practice, Aperture keeps your pictures in a kind of limbo. There are good reasons for this -- suffice it for now to accept that you import image-format digital files into Aperture, you use Aperture to organize and optimize these as Images, and then when need a file to use outside of Aperture, you export you Image. It is at export that you format your Image: you select the file type, the compression amount, the file name, the file size, and more.
In your case, then, you will export your Version, and set the file type to TIFF (recommended above JGP whenever quality is paramount). There is no way to know the file size in bytes prior to creating it. Start with a full-size TIFF and, if necessary, knock it down by percentage until the exported file is less than 1.8 MB.
There is no reason to attempt to keep this file with the Image in Aperture. Send it on its way. Any time you need another file from your Image, you can create it fresh via "File→Export→Version".
HTH. If it doesn't, ask more.

Just installed CS6 but can't associate file type JPG with Photoshop.
I've just now installed Photoshop CS6 and Lightroom 4. File types PSD and TIFF work fine, but I'm completely unable to associate JPG, JPEG or any other variant with the Photoshop program such that I can double-click on the photo file and open Photoshop and the photo. I can associate JPG with either Bridge or Lightroom, or several other programs, but when I browse to Photoshop and select Photoshop.exe nothing happens, not even an error message. Does anyone have a clue what's going on here?
Operating system is Windows 7 Ultimate Edition, 32-bit. There is 4GB of memory in the machine, which is a Dell Vostro 1720 laptop.
Thanks,
Bill SexauerI know there is a problem with the file associations and that I need to fix them. What I don't know is how to do it. I successfully fixed the associations for file types PSD and TIFF, but I'm completely unable to do the same for type JPG. I did use Open With and that's where it just refused to allow me to change to Photoshop. It would allow me to change from the default Windows Photo Viewer to Bridge or to Lightroom, but not to Photoshop.
The problem was probably caused by my having installed CS6 prior to uninstalling CS4. Should I just reinstall CS6 right over the top of the existing CS6? -
I am sending a single-page poster in Illustrator to a commercial printer. There are several placed graphics and I want to choose the correct file-type to keep my Illustrator file nice and small.
Printers like PDFs, but you should consult with the print vendor before you save the file in any particular format. Each vendor is different and have an established workflow. They may not accept JPGs. If the poster prints offset, you will need to supply the appropriate resolution per their request or what they require. If the poster is large format or grand format, then they will or should know what resolution is appropriate. However, large format inkjet only requires 144-150ppi at 100% final size. Try to get in the habit of consulting with the print vendor early on so you end up supplying what is needed.

On a form, using the value "image/*" for the accept attribute of the HTML input Element, how can I add .pdf to the array of pre-configured file types (.jpe, .jpg, .jpeg, .gif, .png, .bmp, .ico, .svg, .svgz, .tif, .tiff, .ai, .drw, .pct, .psp, .xcf, .psd, .raw)?
Say I wanted to add .gif, .jfif or .ico. I find this array limited, how can I add types to image?
<input type="file" name="file" accept="image/*" id="file" />
mimeTypes.rdf does not seem to allow this.''mimeTypes.rdf'' has nothing to do with web development. It's a file that stores your file handling preferences (e.g. if you want ZIP files automatically saved or opened).
You can't change the file types of the pre-defined content specifiers (audio/*, video/*, image/*), but you can specify additional MIME types. To add PDF to your above example,
<pre><nowiki><input type="file" name="file" accept="image/*,application/pdf" id="file" /></nowiki></pre>

Adobe Reader could not open 'images rest 12-4.jpg' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).
that is the message how do i correct this problemIt sounds like your file associations are messed up and Reader is trying to open your .jpg files. Is this correct?
If so, you just need to change the associations to choose what application opens them. Here's how: Change File Associations in Mac OS X -
I installed an external application, and this new application has been configured by defect that it will be used to open all files with extensions like jpg, pdf, etc...
I want to revert this situation and define again the proper application I want to use for opening each file type. How can I do this in Lion?
Thanks,
AzaldierPick a representative file.
Get info. (Command-i)
There you will see a place "Open with" where you can select the application for that file.
Hit the "Change all..." button to do this for all files of this type.

I open a .psd file, make changes to eliminate layers and reduce the file size to then save as a smaller .jpg file. However, when the drop down window pops up to select what file extension I would choose, it immediately flashes closed with out time to make a selection .jpg or otherwise. No matter how many times I try to "beat" the window and make a selection, it's faster than me and it closes. It refuses to allow me to change the file type extension. This problem seems to have developed after downloading recent updates to the program. It's preventing me from doing my work. I need help fast. Can anyone help? I've already tried deleting the program from my system and reloading it, but the problem didn't go away.
Other minor glitch happened at the same time. Any file or group of files opened now fill the screen and are anchored together. I have to go to the menu every time and select 'Float all Windows', and if any other file is opened during the same work session, all previous files will become full screen images again and anchor themselves together again, so need to go to the menu and select 'Float all Windows' AGAIN. It's a real pain. I've tried looking in the preferences and didn't find a solution to the problem. Anyone have any suggestions? This problem is minor thought, compared to the first one listed which has crippled me moving forward in my work.
Thanks to anyone who can help....Hi Noel,
Thanks for trying to assist me. Below is the system info you requested, but to my knowledge, I haven't consciously loaded anything other than a few fonts beyond the original program and any subsequent updates from Adobe. I did forget to list earlier that I'm working on WIN 7 OS. I hope this helps...

How to rename "Kind" for file types
In finder, "Kind" describes file type. With my defaults
.doc kind is "Microsoft Word 97 - 2004 document"
.xls kind is "Microsoft Excel 97-2004 workbook"
.ppt kind is "Microsoft PowerPoint 97-2004 presentation"
.pdf kind is "Portable Document Format (PDF)"
and so forth.
I wish to edit the string describing the file type.
Where is this string stored? How can I edit it?
I am not trying to change the associated application, just the description under "Kind" in Finder for that application, or for the file type if that's how it's stored.
It was easy in Windows XP, surely there is a way in OS-X.
Thank you.Good answer, Barney, it worked. Thank you.
For anyone trying to do this, here's more exactly what I did to change the "Kind" description for ".doc" files:
In Finder, Applications folder, Microsoft Office 2008 folder, control-click Microsoft Word.app, select "Show Package Contents". In Contents folder, select info.plist.
Open info.plist using Property List Editor.app, available on the OS-X distribution disks in the developer section.
Next to "Root", option-click the disclosure triangle to see all values.
Scan the values, edit the values by clicking on them.
Warning: follow these instructions at your own risk.
