Several laptop keyboard keys not working

Dear all,
I hope you can help me. Several keys on my HP Spectre 13-3000ea ultrabook occassionally don't work. More specifically, the n,m,h,j,y,u,6,7 keys (if you check your keyboard you see they constitute a vertical area of keys) do not work, most often when the laptop boots from cold or resumes from sleep. I can get them to work by rapidly hitting other keys in the neighbourhood and swiping my finger across these keys. All of the sudden they 'wake up' again and they will work. Sometimes, randomly, they will stop functioning again and the problem appears to become worse.
It is not a software related problem which support seems keen on, since I experience exactly the same problem in Ubuntu Linux and also in the BIOS. I have the feeling it is related to the connector ribbon but I'm having a bit of a difficult time convincing HP Support of this, especially because the occurrences seem random. If you have any ideas on how to solve this problem, please let me know.
Edit: I forgot to mention I never spilled anything over my keyboard and I used a keyboard brush to clean under the keys as well as I could, since the keys are not removable.
Thanks in advance

I updated to Yosemite, now my laptop keyboard does not work in MS Word for Mac. Help! Any suggestions for fixing this?

Did you ever get a solution to your problem? Because I am having the same problem. I was actually in the middle of using Word when the keyboard stopped working. But it works in other apps, including in Excel.
Thing is that my laptop just got back from Apple for repairs and they replaced everything but the display - including the hard drive.
So not only do I have plenty of hard drive space, but it should be virus and error free otherwise.
I have only installed a few programs and redownloaded some of my files from places like Dropbox, but otherwise is essentially a new system.
Oh - and it came with Yosemite, so I did not upgrade to Yosemite and still Word doesn't work.
I've always had trouble getting Word to play nice with my Mac but that was also with the old, full hard drive.
This is a fresh install. And since I lost all my files, I only had like 1 old file I have downloaded from email and accessed and was in the process of
creating a new file when it crashed. I got no error, the keyboard just stopped working (to type). I also cannot even get Word > Preferences to even open,
    so it is completely unresponsive.
I did a Google search and under the Microsoft communities two suggestions to that person were that there may be multiple copies installed -
I have only the one - and that one is in the wrong place - again, I only have the one and it installed to the Hard drive (visible in Launchpad / Apps).
Another suggestion was that there was some problem with the updates. I ran updates and they installed fine. That helper suggested that the user
may have had different updates that worked for the other Office apps (Excel, PPT etc.) but not Word and that was at least part, if not all of his problem,
but all my Office apps show the same update version 12.3.6, so that cannot be the issue with me.
I've not yet tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but as I got no errors on the original install or updates, I'm not sure if that would fix it.
I've found that Mac just doesn't play nice with some programs at all.
And even though I have a factory installed version of Yosemite on a new, fresh hard drive, even when I booted up, my iPhoto app (which is empty) crashed. I am not sure if my iPhone or iPad was charging at the time, but I don't think so. iPhoto that I still have not even used has crashed several more times since, most notably when plugging in my iPhone / iPad to charge, namely when I declined to upload photos (by default) to DropBox. That may not be related at all, but thus far seems the only other problem I have encountered until this Word problem.
I'm on a MacBook Pro, Sept. 2009, running OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 factory installed from Apple repairs running Office: 2008 for Mac (Home and Student edition).
Please advise if you found a resolution and what it was.
    Thanks

  • My backlit keyboard keys not working?

How come my backlit keyboard keys not working? When I try to use them I get a circle with a line running through it?

    cpickrell wrote:
Jax, the backlight is currently usinig a sensor to turn the light on and off for you. This uses the least amount of battery. If you want to test or control the lighting yourself, go to the Apple Menu, select System Preferences, click on the Keyboard icon. Here you can turn the automatic setting on and off. If it is off, you can use they keyboard keys to turn the keyboard lighting on and off.
    Exactly!

    Hi lialou,
I got your message about the new keyboard failing.  I would recommend doing a full System Recovery to see if that restores the function back to those keys.  Make sure that you back up your data beforehand.

  • Pavilion 15-b142dx Some Keyboard keys not working

A friend gave me their Pavilion 15-b142dx  sleekbook, apparently AFTER they spilled some type of liquid in it. I was able to revive the computer, however, there is still a problem with the keyboard.  When the keyboard is installed in the laptop, several of the keys do not work. However, when I take it out (and suspend it with some plastic) it works fine.  I have disconnected the ribbon cable, and taken some alcohol to clean up the area. I have also been able to run the HP diagnostics on bootup, both short and extended versions, and they come back ok.  Additionally, I connected an external keyboard and it worked fine. I have searched the forum for this type of question and didn't see it. Has anyone else had this problem, or am I looking at replacing the keyboard?
I currently am running windows 8.1. I do not get any error messages, but I did notice HP does not include a keyboard key test in its diagnostics.

    Hi there @MrKen99
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that some of your keys are not working, after some liquid decided to pay an unwanted visit to the board. I am happy to assist you with this.
In my sordid past I have seen some really messed up keyboards, due to similar things, coffee, cola, water, whatever. My most memorable was someone who brought me a computer that was used in a kitchen and was close to a deep fat fryer, and the keyboard was not only coated with oil and grease but a build up of fuzzy dust all throughout the keyboard. In that case I recommended a replacement as the cost to clean it was more expensive than a new one.
Anyway, it sounds as if you have already tried to clean it, but if you did not pop off the offending/non-working keys, the contacts could be "tacky". Make note of the keys that are having the problem and treat them individually. This document shows how to remove and replace keys from a standard notebook keyboard.
    Notebook Keyboard Troubleshooting (Windows 8)
If you do not have any success doing that then, I would look at either replacing the keyboard, or using an external keyboard. If you choose a replacement you can look at the service manual for it, and it will list the supported parts.

  • Keyboard key not working

    Hi
I left my mac over the weekend and not use it at all and I came back after the weekend to find that my 't' key isn't working. It works on my wireless keyboard so I am guessing its an error on the key but I have never know it happen to just a single key? I checked and the key isn't jammed.
Can anyone help with how I can fix this or is it gonna be a trip to Apple to get them to fix it?
    Cheers
    Jack

Please give me the possible solutions for this problem..
If this is in warranty you should get it fixed ASAP and if not you will have to get a USB keyboard to test whether or not the fault is the laptop keyboard or the system board connections to verify the problem. If the USB keyboard works fine for all keys then you need to replace the laptop keyboard.

  • DV7-3112sa keyboard keys not working

I might be blind and missing an older post on this but the 'q' 'w' 'e' 'r' and 'u' 'i' 'o' 'p' keys are not working.
I was typing something then all of a sudden these keys didnt work anymore. I tried the old trick of turning the laptop off and on and taking the battery out but that didnt work. The system says that the drivers are all up to date and working.
Unfortunately this is where my technical skills run out. Any ideas as to why they stopped working, and more importantly how I can fix it, would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Andy

Go into Device Manager, uninstall your Standard PS2 Keyboard and then reboot.  That will reload your keyboard and hopefully it will work properly.  If not, get a hold of a usb keyboard and see if you get the same results.
Please post back whether it works or not.

  • Some keyboard keys not working

    Hey guys,
I've been having problems with my keyboard in my MB.
Every now and then certain keys stop working for no apparent reason.
    The keys are:
    Right Shift
    Right Command
    Both square bracket keys
    Equals & Plus button
    The 0 button
    Arrow keys
These stop and start working randomly, but not all at the same time. However, it is never just one, it is at least 2.
I have not been able to figure out what is causing this, and a restart doesn't help, after a while the keys just start working again.
When they aren't working, keyboard viewer doesn't show up as the key has been pressed, so I think it may be a hardware issue.
My Macbook has never been dropped or had anything spilt on the keyboard.
    Any suggestions would be awesome.
    Ta,
    Ryan.

Try resetting your SMC and PRAM. If neither work, you may need to get your keyboard replaced.

  • Macbook Pro keyboard keys not working

I am honestly so fed up. For the past three days keys have not been working. It started with the question mark and slash button now it's the command, six button, equal sign, and I'm typing in the dark because the key that increases the keyboard light is not working. Soon enough the backlight key will stop working and I'll be in the dark. I've read a couple forums and have tried every single troubleshooting that they've suggested and nothing seems to work. I also can't take it in anytime this weekend due to work. Anything I can possibly do (question mark). Also, trying to fix the question mark button I seemed to have ripped off the key and now it won't go back into place. my question is will apple replace this for free. Thank you. Also, I seemed to notice that the problems started occuring after I bought one of those keyboard covers. Pretty sure that has something to do with it. Since I'll probably have to go in on monday is there anyway I can change some keys so that for example, when I press shift and another button i'll get a question mark. Thank you.

The easiest thing to do might be to get an external keyboard for the moment. As for replacing the key for free, you might get them to do it. If it's just a matter of getting the keycap back on, they probably will. If you broke it off and damaged the keyboad circuitboard, the whole keyboard assembly may need replacement.
Have you tried resetting the SMC and PRAM?

  • Keyboard keys not working?

I am wondering if anybody has ANY ideas for me. It started off the trackball not tracking to the right. I cleaned the TB, and fixed that problem. Then all of the keys went random. The call button went to "y" and "i" all of the time. I did a hard reset (after many soft resets), and that fixed most of the keys. Then randomly the "3/R" key quit working, and the "L" key also quit working.
Any ideas? I am exactly thirty days out of warrenty....
    God bless,
    John

    Hi,
How did you "clean" the trackball?
I guess you've got water damage so follow sdgardne's steps for de-hydrating the device -  stick the devcie only (no battery, etc) in a bag of rice for three days (DO NOT REMOVE OR "TEST"!)
If this doesnt work then do an OS reload.
If it still doesnt work then youve got a faulty device and you'll have to go through a repair/replacement.

  • Toshiba Laptop Function Keys not working

Hi: I have a Toshiba Satellite C55-A laptop. It is a year old, and it came with Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1. I recently upgraded to Windows 10, but then after a week I decided to downgrade back to Windows 7 for personal reasons. My function keys (like the brightness up and down, volume up and down, mute, wifi, play music etc.) worked before and worked in Windows 10, but for some reason when I downgraded back to Windows 7 most of them have stopped working properly. When I press the keys what I get is the function of the actuall F1-12 key (e.g. full screen, search, refresh) and not the brightness, volume etc. The special functions only works when I have to press the FN key at the same time, which is kind of troublesome. I also no longer get the useful notification in the corner of my screen when I press the buttons of, for example, what level (4/8 for example) of brightness I'm at or what level of volume I'm at. Solutions I have tried / checked:-I have checked in All Programs > Toshiba > Tools and Utilities > HWSetup > Keyboard, and the setting for Function Keys mode is correctly set to "Special function mode". But it still doesn't work.-I've installed Toshiba Value Added Package.-Function Keys is enabled in Flash Cards. Is there anyway I can get them back to a working state, because they were really useful before, without having to factory reset my laptop? Thanks, Tiffany

You may want to download and install the System Driver from Toshiba support website
