Several questions about moving iPhoto library from PowerBook G4 to Mac Book Pro.

So yes I was running an old PowerBook G4 laptop, had moved my iPhoto library onto a 2 TB external hard drive so I could free up space on my laptop. Now that I have a new Mac Book Pro, I decided to move the library onto it. Everything seems to have moved ok, except there seems to be a bunch of duplicates, some even have multiple copies. Now this is me looking at the events, and even the names are duplicated.
Can I safely remove and delete the duplicates, or is this just showing me the same photos / events / whathave you?
Also, I noticed when looking at the photos under library, the index shows a close up of any face that is in the photo. Is there any way to turn that feature off so I don't have to look at the same photo taking up a ton of space? Makes it harder to figure if I have duplicates.

How did you move the library to the new MBP? The correct way was to connect external HD with the library to the MBP and just copy the library into the Pictures folder. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and select the newly copied library and open it.
At no time should one library be imported into another. That created multiple duplicates and creates a real mess of the library.

You should be able to copy iTunes purchased music back via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases, but for music from other sources (e.g. copied from CDs), and if you don't have a copy of it anywhere else, then you will need a third-party program to copy it back from your iPad - there are some programs listed half-way down this page which should be able to copy it : https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991

For photos, if they were taken with the iPad, copied to it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites then on a Mac you can use Image Capture, iPhoto or Aperture to copy them off : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083
To copy photos that were originally synced from a computer you will need a third-party app on your iPad such as Simple Transfer which can copy them off via your wifi network. But as photos are 'optimised' when they are synced to an iPad, any that you then copy back to a computer may not be exactly the same as they originally were on your computer.

IPhoto missing from a brand new mac book pro running on Yosemite

I have a brand new mac book pro, and trying to open iPhoto I receive the message " in order to open iphoto, you need to update to the latest version." However, when I "Search App Store" I receive the message "Not Available, the item you've requested is not currently available in the U.S. store." Does this make any sense? How do I get iPhoto??

The HDD where I kept my iPhoto library is deth. The library is sync with the Ipad. Can I import the Iphoto library from iOS to the Mac? I want to keep the organization (albums, events). Is it possible?

No, and the images on your iPad are lower quality than the ones in iPhoto on your Mac. Restore from your back up is the best solution.
You can get images from your iPad with an 3rd party app like iExplorer, but there are others. Search on MacUpdate

As the others have stated, you're on Mountain Lion with 10.8, anything. But you can check your version of the software by going to the apple in the upper left corner of the screen and clicking it and selecting "About This Mac". That will open a box that shows your software version. Once there you can click on "More Info" that will tell you everything about your specific mac configuration.

How do you locate the file where iPhoto library is kept? I moved iPhoto library from hard drive to external dedicated photo drive.

I am trying to restore some elements of my iPhoto library using time machine.
Apple instructions call for locating the file where iPhoto library is kept, and tells you where it is on your hard drive. But I've recently moved my iPhoto library to a dedicated external hard drive, and copied my i photo library there. when i click on it, all the photos are there, but it's an iPhoto library, not a file.
When I go into time machine and click on the date i would like to enter, most of my apps have a circle with a line through it, unaccessible. So: a related question, how would i retrieve a photo file from time machine's previous backup? thank you.

I am trying to retrieve photo uploads from my Android phone. When I last updated my OS, most of these vaporized, leaving only thumbnails. I have had two lengthy sessions with Apple phone support, but still haven't solved the problem.
Apparently I can't go back to July '14 iPhoto in time machine and browse files; i have to copy the entire library.
Which I just did, taking 2 hours.
In order to open the iPhoto library from July '14, I had to first update iPhoto.
When I went into the files, the same problem existed -- photo files gone, only thumbnails there. So now I'm thinking that it's the update that was the problem. This scares me to death, because when we're asked to update, we don't get a menu of preferences to make sure something has been unchecked, like the copy option i had enabled when opening photo files from my phone, which i store in a dropbox folder.
No one at Apple could tell me why this happened, so I have no idea how to prevent it from happening in the future.
That's why I'm trying to create better backups...but i can't figure out deja vu, because it won't open and sync the iPhoto library folder -- it wants me to find the file, and i don't know where it is on the external dedicated photo drive.
I realize this is about six issues, not one. But I'm really appreciative of any help i can get!

How will Time Machine react? Moving iPhoto Library from one HDD to another

I had to move my iPhoto library from one external drive to another. The iPhoto library was backed up via time machine.
Is there a way that I can "teach" Time Machine that the iPhoto-Backup from the old hard drive now belongs to the new drive???

I haven't made a backup since moving the iphoto library. But now I wonder, maybe: Will time machine automatically recognize that the iphoto library just has been moved? And that it's not a "new" library?

If you have any problems with the library in the new account you might have to download and run BatChmod on the library to reset the ownership and permissions to the new account owner for all of the files in the library. User the settings shown in the screenshot below:

For Owner use the owner name for that account. If the account uses a different Group then use it also. You can find the group name by seleting a file in your other account and typing Control+i to bring up the Info window. The ownership and group will be shown near the bottom.

Moving iPhoto library from iPhoto 8 to iPhoto 9

I moved iPhoto library created under iPhoto 8 to Time Capsule Disk and when I open the library under iPhoto 9 I can't see the pictures, only the names etc.
Please help. It's the only problem I have when moving from my old iMac (2007) to new MacBook Pro.

Take it off the Time Capsule disk. That's nt an appropriate place for it.
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to rebuild the thumbnails. It can take 3 or 4 goes for this to work

Moving iphoto library from dead computer to my Macbook

I searched the topic and I gather I just copy the iphoto library from one computer to the other. The first computer (G5 imac) just died and I want to transfer the photos from my back-up drive to my other computer (Macbook). Most of my pictures were in the imac but there are a few in the macbook. I only want one library. Do I need to trash the library in the Macbook before I copy the one from my G5 Imac? I believe that most of the few in the Macbook are duplicates in any case.

If you don't want to deal with multiple libraries you can use the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager to merge the two into one and keep all metadata, albums, etc. intact.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

Jumpy video playback from iPhone 5 to Mac Book Pro

I recently took some footage on my iPhone 5 and downloaded onto my 2007 Mac Book Pro via iPhoto. Unfortunately, mid download iPhoto became unresponsive and I had to Force quit.
After restarting iPhoto I saw that the videos had not been downloaded so I started the process again. It was a seemingly successful download so I deleted the videos from my iPhone.
Upon playback all the video's are jumpy. Other older video's all ready in the library are fine.
It seems all the info is in there as each time I play a video back I see different parts of the video ie: the jumps are not all in the same place each time.
Is it a playback 780 v 1080 issue?
Can anyone help?

Capture from Betacam Deck to Mac Book Pro -- Capture Card?

Okay, mobile editors, now's your chance. I have a client that wants to be able to capture from a Betacam SP or SX deck directly into his Mac Book on location. Are there any 3rd party cards that have component/composite (a la a Kona card for a tower) that slots into a Mac Book Pro? or even a PCMCIA card for a Powerbook G4.
We realize the ioHD is coming out, as well as the AJA io which would work, but we are looking for something smaller that travels better.

There aren't any capture cards that will serve that purpose.
The AJA IoLA will probably be your smallest bet, if you want to capture Uncompressed (which also raises the question, what drive will you be capturing your media to?). It's a pretty small unit. The Io is full rack width, but the IoLA and IoLD are half rack wide.
If you're capturing down to DV resolution, there are numerous capture devices that will convert any analog composite signal to DV resolution and send it to your computer via FW.
I'd personally use the AJA IoLA. Oh, and I do personally use the IoLA. Rock solid.

Transfering data from Time Machine to Mac Book Pro

Trying to transfer data from Time Machine to new Mac Book Pro. Migration Assistant closes down Time Machine and so it doesn't show up on my icons. How to work around?

Those folders were inadvertently excluded from your backups, and as a result you can't restore your data in Recovery, Setup Assistant, or Migration Assistant.
Starting from a fresh installation of OS X, set up a new administrator account and log in. Follow the instructions on this page to associate your existing backups with the new installation.
You should now be able to enter Time Machine and restore your user data from a snapshot. I suggest you do this in two stages. Quit all applications except the Finder before you begin.
Restore all the visible items at the top level of your home folder.
Hold down the option key and select Go ▹ Library from the Finder menu bar. Enter Time Machine and restore all items in the Library folder. Log out and log back in as soon as the restore is complete.
Any other invisible folders or files at the top level of your home folder that you want to preserve will have to be restored separately. For most users, that isn't necessary.
You'll have to reinstall all third-party applications from scratch, or restore them from another kind of backup, if you have one.

Note copied and pasted itself from Iphone 5 to Mac Book Pro

OK, I have the most strangest event to report am really freaking out as Im not too sure of how it was possible but I am sure that there is someone out there who may! I will outline below exactly the circumstances in which this bizarre occurred:
1. Turned on Mac Book Pro (OS X 10.6.8)
2. Opened my VNC remote viewer to remote connect to my Windows 7 PC
3. Connected with my computer and opened an MS Word 2007 document
4. Selected and copied the text in this document
5. On my visible MAC tool bar I opened "Text Edit"
6. Then hit cmd+v to paste the text from this document from the Windows PC to the Mac text edit document
This is when I got a little disturbed - I will be as thorrough as possible:
The paste function worked as per normal in the fact that some text did appear in my text edit document but it was not the text sourced from the word document is was something completely different - In fact the text startlingly was originally from a text message I sent over 10 days ago on my iphone 5. I am more than baffled how this text has managed to mysteriously appear from my "Un-connected" Iphone 5 to a text document on my Mac Book!?!?!? It is beyond freaking me out until................I just happened to open my "notes" app on my Iphone and the first thing I saw was an old note i created that was infact this text that appeared on my Mac!
"A little background history on where the text came from: I had a text message exchange/conversation with someone I then wanted to send this complete exchange to someone else via text message but so it read all in one long complete unbroken message I individually copied each text exchange and pasted in sequentially into the note document until I had the whole conversation in there then copied the entire Note document and pasted it into messages and then text it to someone"
OK, so I think that this may now be something un-supernatural however, I need to determine exactly how this procedure occurred! I am still utterly baffled as:
1. I did not connect or even touch my notes app that day on my iphone and actually have not touched it since I created that note over 10 days ago
2. Checked my icloud settings on my Iphone and can see I have not got notes selected/activated
I hope I have not missed anything out but if anyone has any intelligent respones that may solve this mystery I was be extremely grateful.
