Several questions on Fireworks from absolute beginner

Hello!
At the moment I'm in the very beginning of web-designing process and I've been using Fireworks trial for several days only. Before that I've created only one website in Joomla! and that's all. I've got several questions and I would be glad if masters of Fireworks will post full answers on them.
I've read the official manual, but didn't check any additional materials, because I feel better when learning myself with help in form of answers to concrete questions.
Here is how I see process of making simple website in Fireworks: draw website and then make it to work. I did first part and I've prepared my website. It of course looks ugly, but I want to start from it, as I'm learning. Here it is:
Okay, what is the next thing I should do? Right, I should slice it. And here goes the question: how should I slice my menu? I want it to be simple menu, so when you move mouse over "About me" it lightens in some other color and some content should appear in right part of this structure. How would I implement it using Fireworks? Then in what format should I export my webpage? HTML and CSS? How do I write styles in CSS through Fireworks? And final question is how can I make my website be in center of page (I've tried to add <center></center> inside "index.htm" file, but no luck)? I would also like to know what do I need to do with all images so you can't select them with mouse and move all around in your browser? How do I stick them:
Thanks and sorry for too many questions at one time,
Aleks.

Looking at your mockup, that navbar could probably be created
completely using CSS and HTML, rather than slice up the "button areas"
but if you want to go that route, I'd recommend creating button
symbols. The slicing is done for you and you can create up to four
states for the button.
If you want to export the graphics only, choose File > Export.
Browse to your site folder
Set the Export option to Images only
Make sure you are exporting slices
Deselect the option to export areas without slices
Click Save (Windows) or Export (Mac)
Use DW to create your page, insert your images and add your rollover
behaviors.

  • Several questions about migrating from iPhoto to Aperture

I'm currently a heavy iPhoto user and am looking into migrating to Aperture. Can anyone give me a sense of what I to expect if/when I make this switch?
Here are several particular things I'm wondering about:
    1. iPhoto works great as a computerized photo album for casual browsing. (I can see a page of different events with mouse-over previews, plus I can hide poorer shots so that I can just view the highlights.) Will Aperture be a step back in this department? If so, is it possible to "share" my Aperture photos with iPhoto without keeping two parallel copies of everything?
    2. When I import an edited photo from iPhoto to Aperture, will the iPhoto "original" become the Aperture "original" and the iPhoto "modified" become the Aperture "modified? Is the same true if I export an edited photo from Aperture to iPhoto?
    3. Does Aperture have an analog for "hidden" photos? I currently mark my best shot from a series by hiding the rest. Will I lose this marking if I migrate to Aperture or is there a way to preserve it?
    4. I currently have a number of short video clips (taken with my point-and-shoot's video feature) mixed in with the iPhoto albums. (iPhoto really does let me keep everything organized in one place!) If I understand correctly, Aperture won't let me store these in my Aperture library alongside the still-photos of the same subjects. Is this correct? If so, how have other people handled this?
    5. Do EXIF tags get re-read upon import from iPhoto to Aperture? I've got a number of iPhoto files which I've retroactively geotagged with HoudahGeo. Will the tagging be lost (since iPhoto is not currently aware of the geotagging as the EXIF tags have not been re-read)... or will Aperture now recognize this metadata?
    6. If worst-comes-to-worst and I give up on Aperture after a few months, how painful will it be to un-migrate back to iPhoto? More importantly, what album metada (e.g. events, albums, ratings, tags, notes, dates, hidden-ness, links between original and modified versions of a photo, iWeb references, etc.) will be lost? In other words, if I were to import everything from iPhoto to Aperture, wipe my iPhoto library clean, and then export everything back from Aperture to iPhoto, what information will have been destroyed?
Thanks in advance for any answers to this long list of questions!

Here are several observations (read: warnings) in case anyone else is considering migrating a significant iPhoto library to Aperture...
    A) Pictures marked as "hidden" appear to be silently skipped over (along with video clips, as was expected) when importing an iPhoto library to Aperture. They do not appear in the relevant Aperture project regardless of the filtering options.
    B) Both iPhoto originals and modifieds are imported. The former are given the keyword "iPhoto original" and the latter are given the keyword "iPhoto modified." Each pair of photos is put into a single Aperture "stack." Both photos are given the same tags/ratings (so, for example, the un-rotated, uncropped, poorly balanced original will show up alongside the nice clean "modified" if you were to filter for 5-star images), and both files are given identical "version names" (equal to the "name field" in iPhoto). In most cases the original -- not the modified version -- was set as the stack's "pick" and displayed when the stack was collapsed. *Significantly, I could find no way of creating a view in Aperture that showed one copy of each picture, with the "iphoto modified" version displayed for photos that had been modified in iPhoto and the original version displayed for photos that had never been modified in iPhoto!* (This is, of course, the way they are shown in iPhoto.)
    C) My understanding of "stacks" is that they are designed to help organize multiple "tries" at the same shot (e.g., I want to make sure that nobody's eyes are closed in the group photo, so I press the shutter six times in quick succession -- I'm going to pick a "best" one will be mostly interested in that shot from then on). This is a fantastic idea! However things get confusing if you are already using stacks to track original and modified versions (as described above)... particularly if your stack should contain six pictures plus original versions of each. Plus, as I mentioned, the "original" version is usually the default "pick" in each stack.
    D) After import, "iPhoto original" versions of portrait photos appear un-rotated. Normally, my cameras (including a Nikon D80, an iPhone, and others) mark photos' orientations and they are automatically displayed in the correct orientation. Aperture appears to consider this auto-rotation an iPhoto edit and helpfully displays the "iPhoto original" always in landscape.
    E) Aperture may incorrectly import events whose names contain a "/" or a ".", so if your event names contain dates, rewrite them with "-"s before importing to Aperture.
    F) Aperture does have a rough mouse-over-the-icon-to-flip-through view, similar to the "events" pane in iPhoto... although you will lose your choice of which photo serves as the default icon for each event when you import your library from iPhoto, and you cannot "hide" photos from appearing in the flip-through as you can with iPhoto.
    G) Perhaps it's my inexperience with the program, but I could find no way to sort the project list by date (vs. alphabetically), nor could I find any way to make a correction to a single photo's date/time.
As a bottom line, remember that Aperture is definitely not "iPhoto Plus." It lacks a number of iPhoto's features, but in exchange gives you a number of really slick tools aimed at streamlining a digital photography workflow.
I'd also encourage people to think very carefully before moving a large, well-organized iPhoto library to Aperture. You may lose a fair amount of information, and the result will take a lot of work to "make pretty" again. It does look like a nice program, though. Are you ready to relegate all of your existing pictures to an iPhoto "pre-history" and start over with a blank -- but much fancier -- slate in Aperture?

  • Absolute beginner: Artistic (Chalk/Charcoal) Brush

First of all I apologize for this silly question; I am an absolute beginner (minus absolute) in Illustrator. I would have googled my problem but I don't even know what to google, to be honest. Here it is:
I drew a heart and would like to stroke it with a charcoal/chalk brush. I use a Wacom Intuos 4 tablet. When I stroke it (by selecting the path and clicking on the different brush samples in the brush library) the line "imitates" gesture drawing and does not stroke my shape with a unified (weight) line. Instead, it leaves a break between the end of my path and the end of the "gesture stroke. (The same thing happens with straight lines too: the stroke does not go up to the end of the line and often it does not start at the beginning of it.) I would also like it to be the same weight all along and not to get thinner in the end. Here is a picture of what I mean:
I know it is something really really basic but I can't figure out how to change this. Any help would be highly appreciated. And again, sorry for this absolute beginner question.

The path contains no data relating to your pressure or pen angle. It is just a uniform path. I’m not sure why Illustrator is not starting or ending at that point. It may be because the rectangular bounding box on the brush would overlap itself there. See what happens if you click on the point with the knife tool.
Here I used a Zapf Dingbats heart and converted to paths. On he left, the unmodified path. On the right, the path after clicking with the knife tool. This makes it an open path. You can still fill it if you want.

  • General questions from an absolute beginner

    Dear all,
my employer would like to have me set up an online help for our software product. Since I am in the process of converting the current documentation to FrameMaker I have lightly issued the idea to use RoboHelp since we have the technical communications suite 2... I am saying "lightly" because I am freaking out a bit ever since I have tried getting into it, needless to say I have not been very successful and I was not able to find any "classroom in a book"-like help. I didnt find the Adobe help section for RoboHelp very... helpful, I just felt overwhelmed with all the information i didn't feel I needed at the point I was at. Is there a step by step documentation of some sorts for the absolute beginner who does not even have any xml or html skills worth mentioning (I am not sure to what extend those might be needed)?
Also from an advanced user's point of view, how developed will my html/xml skills have to be in order to really understand and get the best of this program? Depending on this I might or might not be able to book a class but it won't be of any use if i need skills I dont have (yet) in order to even understand the program. In the worst case I might have to do some research on alternatives, although I feel stupid, since the tool is available and im not sure if better alternatives would be easier to use as well...
I am happy for any advice, thank you!

    Hi Jeff,
right now the problem is more "Getting Started" and im sure once I am at the point where I need to import the FM content this will be a helpful suggestion! But for now I was more wondering on whether there was a step-by-step thingy to help me get into it to begin with and whether i need a lot of xml/html to use RoboHelp...

  • Absolute beginner's question: scaling video in embedded player

    Hi folks,
I'm an absolute beginner in flash video embedding  - my company has purchased FMS 3.5 and I have to -simply- stream videos  from a server via following HTML-Code:
    <object  width="800" height="600" id="videoPlayer" name="videoPlayer"  type="application/x-shockwave-flash"  classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000">
      <param name="movie" value="../swfs/videoPlayer.swf" />
      <param name="quality" value="high" />
      <param name="bgcolor" value="#000000" />
      <param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" />
      <param name="flashvars"  value="&videoWidth='800'&videoHeight='600'&dsControl=manual&dsSensitivity=100&serverURL=r tmp://<here  the url>&DS_Status=true&streamType=vod&autoStart=true"  />
    <embed src="../swfs/videoPlayer.swf" width="800"  height="600" id="videoPlayer" quality="high" bgcolor="#000000"  name="videoPlayer" allowfullscreen="true"  pluginspage="http://www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer"  flashvars="&videoWidth='800'&videoHeight='600'&dsControl=manual&dsSensitivity=100&serverU RL=rtmp://<here  the url>&DS_Status=true&streamType=vod&autoStart=true"  type="application/x-shockwave-flash">
      </embed>
    </object>
My problem is simply the scaling of the videos. The files are  .flv-files and do stream very well from the source directory to my  browser. But when I change the object-width or object-height the video  is just cut instead of scaled.
If I change the videoHeight or  videoWidth (in Flashvars) it has no effect. What am I doing wrong?
ps  The player naturally scales the clips slightly larger than they really  are. So I already guess that there's a setup-file with settings, but I  have no idea where to look it up to configure the player.
    I  would appreciate your help!
    Thanks in advance!
    kuk

IN CASE someone has this problem too, it seems the standard Adobe stream player integrated in the FMS-Installation (...) cannot resize the video. So the solution seems to be using another player. I'll use the free FlowPlayer which I also used for replaying .flv-Files, and which has a rtmp-plugin for streaming. Good luck folks...
    kuk

  • Absolute Beginner needs help

I've had my 30 GB color video iPod for a few hours, and feel totally lost.
I was able to connect it to my iMac, and the computer used iTunes to synch everything.
How do you turn it on or off? How do you stop it from playing music?
How do you set it up, or use the wheel to select stuff?
This is all very basic stuff, and I couldn't find the info in the help files or in this discussion forum.
    Am I just plain dense?

To stop the iPod from automatically syncing with iTunes when you connect the iPod to the computer you will need to change some preferences.
Connect the iPod to the computer and then stop the iPod from syncing. While the iPod is still in iTunes i.e is still in the left column (sometimes it ejects the iPod when you stop it from syncing don't ask me why : /)
I will assume that you have the latest iTunes (if not you will eventually need to download it anyway) so all you will have to do is click on the iPod in the left column and click on the "Manually manage music and videos" box. Now you will have to drag songs/videos/playlists to the iPod.
To turn off your iPod simply hold the play button until it sleeps. Then you can put it on hold so it wont turn on accidently.
To select stuff... as in selecting a specific song? then navigate to the prefered song listing (songs or playlists artists etc) using the center button (sorry if this sounds obvious but you did say absolute beginner :P)
To stop a song selection from playing just push previous until you have gone past the first song. there may be easier ways but unless your playing 4000 songs its not very time-consuming
Hope this helps you out a bit look forward to some feedback and quires
This is probably covered in the links provided by b noir but this is just to focus on the specifics of your questions.

  • Several question regarding kde4

    Hi!
Yesterday I have upgraded kde to 4.1 version. I am quite happy with it, but I have several questions:
    1. Is there any way to organize icons on desktop? In KDE 3 we had "Snap to grid" and was ok. Now they are freely mixed on desktop.
    2. I am missing some KDE 3 styles (like domino). And now Qt3 apps uses basic Qt styles (which are awful). Trying to install it from pacman results in error, because styles require kde3-base.
P.S. I rather don't like default theme for KDE4. I miss some nice and polished window decorations and styles and of course grayish gray and more gray color schemes .

I heard about but didn't test Folder view (for managing icons on desktop). Also you can right click on applications in the menu and tell them to be put on the desktop. Or at least it worked before, with the first kde-workspace package merged. Unfortunately I cannot test now, since I'm on a win desktop at work.

  • Paleolithic question : I went from Photoshop Elements 1 to 12 !

    Hello,
I went from Photoshop Elements 1 with a MacOS 9 Imac to Photoshop Elements 12 with a Macbook under Maveriks.
Some images made with Photoshop Elements 1 does not open in Photoshop Elements 12. images taken one month apart there several years may or may not open.
In "Get Info" from the Macbook, the system nevertheless recognizes these images as type "Adobe Photoshop Elements file".
But in the "More info" Macbook, those which open in Photoshop Elements 12 displayed: Dimensions: 591x886 / Space color: RGB / Alpha Channel: No / Opening: yesterday.
Those that do not open with Photoshop Elements 12 displayed nothing (only the opening time).
How to open these photos which are nevertheless in .psd format ?
Thank you in advance for any information,
    Michel

    1) In the Finder Get Info dialog under General, is there a size listed
for the images that won't open in pse 12?
Yes, I have a size listed for the images that won't open in pse 12,
about 2,5 Mo, below info "Type" : Adobe Photoshop Elements file.
    2) Did you recently copy the images from os 9 or were they stored on an
    cd/dvd or external drive?
I transferred all my documents to an external disk "Aluslim 2.5",
FireWire 400 and USB 2.0, format : "Mac OS Extended"
On the external drive Aluslim (where I kept the photos of trasfert) I
find the same corrupt files: In "Get Info" from the Macbook, the system
recognizes all images as "Adobe Photoshop Elements file". But in the
"More info" Macbook, those that open in PSE12 displayed: Dimensions:
591x886 / Space color: RGB / Alpha Channel: No / Opening: yesterday.
Those that do not open with PSE12 display nothing (only opening time)

  • Several questions that I do not see in the "FAQ" about CC.

I have several questions that I do not see in the "FAQ". Here are three of them.
    1) After a cancellation of membership, for whatever reason, will I still be able to use the After Effects I bought before this CC thing?
    2) What happened to the software I have purchased in the past? I can no longer link to the page that contains my serial numbers for the products that I have purchased.
    3) And can I no longer download my software if my copies are lost?
    4) Is CC the only way to get future software versions? It appears that using the software through a subscription keeps one from upgrading to new versions without having to keep paying once you purchased or one will not be able to use the software.

    1) After a cancellation of membership, for whatever reason, will I still be able to use the After Effects I bought before this CC thing?
1, After cancelling CC you can use the perpetual products purchased by you earlier. If you have registered them you can access them via Adobe.com (Retail purchase)
    2) What happened to the software I have purchased in the past? I can no longer link to the page that contains my serial numbers for the products that I have purchased.
As mentioned all your previous purchases are available to you, to get the serial number of past if they are retail purchase & registered then :
Enter your Adobe ID and password, and then click Sign In. Go to manage account(you get this when the cursor is hovered over your sign in name, choose all products.
The My Adobe page is displayed. All your registered products and their serial numbers are listed in theMy products section
    3) And can I no longer download my software if my copies are lost?
Yes you can download it if you have purchased it as an download link as the download option is also available with the serial number, you can find some download here also Download and Installation Help
    4) Is CC the only way to get future software versions? It appears that using the software through a subscription keeps one from upgrading to new versions without having to keep paying once you purchased or one will not be able to use the software.
The best part of CC is that you do not need to make another purchase, the CC keeps on upgrading on its own at no extra cost, you can get the upgrades till the time you have active CC.

  • Best absolute beginner book

    Hi eveyrone,
I need opinions here... I would like to know what the best ABSOLUTE beginner book would be, for Java - in your opinion. I've been messing with Java for the past couple days.. and haven't got very far.
I have used Visual Basic in the past. I do not know C/C++.
    Thanks for the opinions!

There's no absolute best. A lot of it depends on the individual's style, etc.
All of the following should be decent. Check them out and find out which ones work best for you.

  • Several question about SVN PKGBUILDs

I'd like to make a PKGBUILD for an SVN version of a program. I have just looked at existing PKGBUILDs and now there are  several questions:
    * Why are PKGBUILDs made for particular revision? PKGBUILDs for the latest revision would not require maintainance and would be more useful for users... (IMHO)
    * Why does everyone make 'svn co' in their PKGBUILDs and not 'svn export'? I don't think that users will commit their changes under anonymous account anyway... (that will be 98% impossible)

Lazer wrote:* Why are PKGBUILDs made for particular revision? PKGBUILDs for the latest revision would not require maintainance and would be more useful for users... (IMHO)
Because you have to put one version when you write the PKGBUILD.
Besides, it indicates that the maintainer of the PKGBUILD tested this particular revision.
It is impossible to know if the PKGBUILD or the package will still work correctly at a future revision (there could be changes in the build system, other compilation problems, new bugs in the software, etc...)
That said, makepkg by default will update the revision automatically when you run it. But this can be prevented with --holdver :
--holdver    Prevent automatic version bumping for development PKGBUILDs
    * Why does everyone make 'svn co' in their PKGBUILDs and not 'svn export'? I don't think that users will commit their changes under anonymous account anyway... (that will be 98% impossible)
    Uh?
    $ svn -h co
checkout (co): Check out a working copy from a repository.
PS : have a look at /usr/share/pacman/PKGBUILD-svn.proto from abs package for a prototype of a svn pkgbuild.

  • [SMS capabilities] Several questions

I have several questions about iPhone SMS capabilities.
Q1 : is it possible to launch an application when receiving a SMS with particular content or from a specific phone number ? What kind of notifications can be done toward the application when receiving this SMS ?
Q2 : is it possible to parse SMS content inside the application ?
Q3 : is it possible to send an automatic SMS with the application, without user need to write it ? For example, the user does a particular action that results into a SMS sending toward a server which controls other user equipments.
Thanks in advance for your answers.

Hi there! From my experience (having very very briefly developed for iPhone) is that:
    1. No, and the SMS app cannot 'hand off' to another app;
    2. The iPhone SMS database cannot be read from another 3rd party app;
    3. I'm unsure whether the SMS app has it's own protocol (like, sms:).
Your best bet, if you are a registered iPhone developer, is to post these questions on the Apple iPhone Developer forums.
    Good luck!

  • An absolute beginner

    Hello,
I'm an absolute beginner. I work in the Windows 2000 Professional environment. I downloaded J2SDK1.4.0_01 but I cannot run HelloWorldApp. After typing
    javac HelloWorldApp.java
in the command line I only get another prompt (after delay of some secs).
I downloaded and installed the program in the default folder j2sdk1.4.0_01. I also added the path
    ;C:\>j2sdk1.4.0_01\bin; in the Control Panel\System\Advanced\Environment Variables\System Variables\Path.
    After typing
    javac -verbose HelloWorldApp.java
I get the following message answer:
    [parsing started HelloWorldApp.java]
    [parsing completed 161ms]
    [loading C:\J2SDK~1.0._0\jre\lib\rt.jar(java/lang/Object.class]

    C:\>
    I also didn't find any HelloWorldApp.class file.
Any suggestion would be appreciated. I have to run this file in two days!!!

you compile with the -d directive, which indicatesthat the class file should be sent to the directory
you specify after the -d switch.
If your doing neither of these, your .class file
should be in the directory you compiled from.
Remember that when you run your application, you
should be running "java HelloWorldApp" not "java
HelloWorldApp.class", and that it is case sensitive,
so "java helloworldapp" will not work. Thanks very much limeybrit9! Though HelloworldApp.class still does not appear in the original directory. However, I created a new directory and I tried luckily and succeded to use the -d switch after which I specified the new directory. HelloWorldApp.class appeared in the new directory. And I could run it and it worked! Piece of cake, ha? Just kidding...
    Thank you again,

  • Several questions regarding File Vault

    Hi!
I have several questions regarding File Vault - right now I'm using Mac OS 10.4.8
1.: The battery lock of my iBook is defect thus it happens from time to time that while transporting it the battery drops out while the laptop is sleeping. What happens with the File Vault-disk image?
2.: I want to (have to ) set up my Intel iMac again. The installer-CD I have will bring it back to 10.4.6
AFAIK the data format used for File Vault since 10.4.7 is version 2. What happens if I encrypt my stuff now (10.4.8 - thus version 2), back it up to my backup disc, install a new system (10.4.6 - therefore version 1) and want to access my data via Migration Manager (don't want to use archive and install)?
3.: How do I actually do a backup of my data while the system is running? The backup should be encrypted as well.
I use the demo-version of SuperDuper for backing up my system because with it I can ensure that I have a complete bootable backup of my running system.
Thanks for your answers in advance

    Parker,
You said:1. If it did, Apple would not use FileVault, as everyones computer will have a battery problem once in their life, and Apple would lose buisness from angry people who lost all of their data.I have seen enough reports of data loss with FileVault that I feel compelled to dispute your statement.
In Data corruption and loss: causes and avoidance, Dr. Smoke writes...If your data-security needs demand FileVault, you should backup your encrypted Home folder regularly, preferably daily. Like any hard drive or disk image, a Home folder protected by FileVault — an encrypted, sparse disk image — does not respond well to the causes of data corruption...Loss of power definitely is a cause of data corruption.
    For Niels....,
An Unencrypted Look at FileVault, by François Joseph de Kermadec is an excellent discussion of the features, pitfalls, and cautions regarding Filevault.
Although the article discusses Panther and is dated 12/19/2003, the concepts as they apply Tiger have not changed.
The cautions and warnings are prominent in any of the Apple Knowledge Base articles referring to the use of FileVault. If a user is unfamiliar with any aspect of FileVault, it should not in my opinion be activated.
As good as FileVault is in protecting your sensitive data, it also presents the danger of locking up your files in an irretrievable ball of one's and zero's. Backups are critical. You must ensure that you have a comprehensive backup plan. Backup and Recovery, by Dr. Smoke is a fine example of what you need to consider.
