Several questions regarding File Vault

Hi!
I have several questions regarding File Vault - right now I'm using Mac OS 10.4.8
1.: The battery lock of my iBook is defect thus it happens from time to time that while transporting it the battery drops out while the laptop is sleeping. What happens with the File Vault-disk image?
2.: I want to (have to ) set up my Intel iMac again. The installer-CD I have will bring it back to 10.4.6
AFAIK the data format used for File Vault since 10.4.7 is version 2. What happens if I encrypt my stuff now (10.4.8 - thus version 2), back it up to my backup disc, install a new system (10.4.6 - therefore version 1) and want to access my data via Migration Manager (don't want to use archive and install)?
3.: How do I actually do a backup of my data while the system is running? The backup should be encrypted as well.
I use the demo-version of SuperDuper for backing up my system because with it I can ensure that I have a complete bootable backup of my running system.
Thanks for your answers in advance
ibook g4 12" 1.2 GHz 768 MB RAM / Intel iMac Core 2 Duo 17" 2.0 GHz 2GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Parker,
You said:1. If it did, Apple would not use FileVault, as everyones computer will have a battery problem once in their life, and Apple would lose buisness from angry people who lost all of their data.I have seen enough reports of data loss with FileVault that I feel compelled to dispute your statement.
In Data corruption and loss: causes and avoidance, Dr. Smoke writes...If your data-security needs demand FileVault, you should backup your encrypted Home folder regularly, preferably daily. Like any hard drive or disk image, a Home folder protected by FileVault — an encrypted, sparse disk image — does not respond well to the causes of data corruption...Loss of power definitely is a cause of data corruption.
For Niels....,
An Unencrypted Look at FileVault, by François Joseph de Kermadec is an excellent discussion of the features, pitfalls, and cautions regarding Filevault.
Although the article discusses Panther and is dated 12/19/2003, the concepts as they apply Tiger have not changed.
The cautions and warnings are prominent in any of the Apple Knowledge Base articles referring to the use of FileVault. If a user is unfamiliar with any aspect of FileVault, it should not in my opinion be activated.
As good as FileVault is in protecting your sensitive data, it also presents the danger of locking up your files in an irretrievable ball of one's and zero's. Backups are critical. You must ensure that you have a comprehensive backup plan. Backup and Recovery, by Dr. Smoke is a fine example of what you need to consider.

  • Several Questions Regarding Educational Versions of Software

Alright, I have several questions regarding eduational software from Adobe.  I will be attending school in the near future (now I am not enrolled in any type of school) and I notice that Adobe has huge discounts on 'educational software'.
What exactly is the difference between the 'retail' version of a program and an educational version?  Do you need some sort of student ID to activate an educational version, or proof that you're in school, or anything special like that?  I've noticed people selling unopened educational versions on eBay and from what I hear there are no differences between the software, but this makes me wonder... why the price difference?
Also, I plan on buying another Mac in the near future - probably for school.  My second questions is - with this software (educational), can I put the programs on both my Desktop and my Laptop, or will they only work registered to one person on one computer?  I've heard from people that serial numbers can only be activated so many times.
Final question.  My hard drive recently crashed, and I lost a good bit of stuff and had to re-install everything.  If this would happen again, can I re-install all of the Adobe programs to a new hard drive?  Or am I going to encounter the whole 'serial numbers can only be activated so many times' thing?
Okay.  I think that about does it.  Any input would be great.  Thanks.
    -Mike

In terms of contents, there is normally no real difference between the retail and educational/student editions. There may be some extra fonts or clipart in the retail version, but this varies from release to release and from product to product.
You must qualify to purchase an educational/student version. Such qualifications are listed on Adobe's website. Normally you must provide proof of such qualification to whoever sells such software licenses to you. You cannot buy now on the basis that you will be a student in the future. You must have the student status at the time of the purchase.
Unlike retail versions, educational/student versions of Adobe software are not transferable. Sales of such "unopened" software on eBay should be regarded with suspicion. Authorized Adobe resellers do not offer software sales on eBay. The software is either stolen, used (but repackaged), or pirated.
Most Adobe software, including the Creative Suite software, may be simultaneously activated on up to two computers owned and used by only one individual. The second computer is typically a mobile computer if the first computer is a home computer for students. For retail, typically the first computer is one's office computer and the second computer is a mobile or home computer. The computers are not to be running the software simultaneously. And no, two students can't share a single copy on two separate computers.
The software may be activated and deactivated but after 20 or so such cycles, you will need to call Adobe and explain what's going on to obtain any additional such cycles. If you are activated on two systems and a disk drive or computer blows out and you need to reinstall the software without having had the ability to deactivate on the blown system, Adobe's activation support group will normally grant you an extra activation, assuming that you don't have a record of abusing the priviledge (such as claiming your disk drive crashes once a month!).

  • Several question regarding kde4

    Hi!
Yesterday I have upgraded kde to 4.1 version. I am quite happy with it, but I have several questions:
    1. Is there any way to organize icons on desktop? In KDE 3 we had "Snap to grid" and was ok. Now they are freely mixed on desktop.
    2. I am missing some KDE 3 styles (like domino). And now Qt3 apps uses basic Qt styles (which are awful). Trying to install it from pacman results in error, because styles require kde3-base.
P.S. I rather don't like default theme for KDE4. I miss some nice and polished window decorations and styles and of course grayish gray and more gray color schemes .

I heard about but didn't test Folder view (for managing icons on desktop). Also you can right click on applications in the menu and tell them to be put on the desktop. Or at least it worked before, with the first kde-workspace package merged. Unfortunately I cannot test now, since I'm on a win desktop at work.

  • Several questions regarding aperture 1.5.2

    hi.
I am a new mac user (just started using several days now), and apparently Aperture.
One of the reason why I switched to Apple is Aperture and future CS3. In any rate, I have these questions if anyone can answer.
First, my spec is as follows.
    Mac Pro/2.66Ghz/5Gb/250GB+320GB HD/ATI X1900 Video Card.
    1. I have imported about 4000 images into Aperture library. I liked the idea of vault and backing up to another device/hd for safety. Now that I have about 4000 images, the photo editing has SLOWED down dramatically. What I saw the changes immediately, now I have to wait 1 or 2 seconds before I see the result. Is this normal? I am worried that if I import another batch of photos from another HD, it'll slow down even more. How can I improve the overall responsiveness and performance of Aperture?
    2. Is there a way to export entire library/project/folder from Aperture Library back to hard drive? I tried export, but it seems to export only individual photos. I wouldn't want to repeat the process 4000 times in order to export the master files back to the external HD in its original format. Is there any way?
I can't seem to locate the color management/profile setting. Is it default to AdobeRGB or Proofing is what it is?
Thanks for any response in advance.

    Hi and welcome.
    1) Is Aperture processing previews? This takes a long time after import (hours), and it will slow the overall responsiveness of the machine down. If you don't need the previews, you can turn them off. Be aware you have to do this in more places than just the preferences, you have to click the "action" gearwheel and disable them. See if Aperture is burning CPU cycles generating previews.
    2) Yes. Select a project and export it. Perhaps you have some photos selected and not a project. Ensure you don't have photos selected, and click specifically on a project in the list. Under the Export menu item there should be a "Project" option.
    3) The default color space used by Aperture is "large." It is larger than Pro Photo RGB according to Joe Schorr. When you export a photo, only then is a color space applied (this is in general a good thing -- artificially limiting the color space to something as small as Adobe RGB could cause banding during editing).
I would suggest you not use onscreen proofing except for when you plan to print -- it often has some strange effects which will show definite posterization.

  • Several Questions Regarding the Imac

    Hello everyone.
I'm on the fence about purchasing a new Imac. I'm interested in a 24" model, potentially with the 2.4 Ghz processor.
I'm a lifelong Windows user, and like many Windows users, I have some reservations from making the switch over to an Imac. Led by the fact that I'd need to purchase Microsoft Office for Mac ($150) and a screenwriting software ($100) that already runs smoothly on my current XP based Dell tower (it would be an additional computer to authorize the software on, because they limit the number of times you can add it to individual computers. bastards).
However, after using the 24" Imac at an Apple store, I'm intrigued by the idea of getting one, led by my desires to begin shooting short films/editing them with my Imac.
I have questions. A whole bunch. But your answers would be greatly, greatly, greatly appreciated. Here goes......
    1. I have an ancient HP Inkjet 932c printer. I believe it's 6 years old. Will I be able to use this printer with my Imac?
    2. How well will Final Cut Pro run on my desired Imac if I upgrade it to 4 GB of RAM? Is it better to upgrade the memory vs. purchasing the 2.8 Ghz Imac?
    3. Is purchasing 4 GB of RAM from Crucial the best way to get the most out of my new computer/using Final Cut? (Certainly much cheaper than doing it via Apple).
    4. Perhaps I'm making myself paranoid by reading through all the forum sections regarding the Imac, but I'm reading a lot of posts regarding internet speed issues using a router. I have a Linksys WRT54GS router. I was planning on using it via an ethernet cable to the Imac. Can anyone confirm or deny that this would be an easy transition?
    5. This is a BIGGIE for me: the glare found on these new screens. My Imac would be located in a room that contains several windows from different sides (shades pulled up during the day). I don't want to have to draw my shades during the day in order to avoid the glare. Do you reckon this will be a major issue in this room?
    6. What is Apple's return policy? If I hold off upgrading the RAM manually, but decide the Imac is not for me (glare issues, internet connection, other reason), can I easily return it? Is there a set amount of time I have to do so?
    7. Someone complained on this forum about this version of the Imac I'm describing as having a "super slow dvd unit". I'm looking to do a lot of video editing and DVD burning. Does the Imac have a relatively slow DVD player/burner/component?
I know I have a lot of questions, but this is a huge investment for me financially, and I also want to make sure my next home computer purchase is something that can last me a long time (8 - 10 years).
Your answers are GREATLY appreciated in advance. Thanks!

    Hello,
Remember a Mac is a PC so you can get install Windows XP or Vista and continue to make use of your software investments on the Windows side to ease your migration. Personally I do use Microsoft Office (v.X) but there are alternatives out there. Apple's iWork is Office compatible and although very different may do all that you require. Also look at open-source (free) alternatives like NeoOffice (link).
Just to confirm George's excellent answers:
    1. Mac HP 932 Driver (link).
    2. I've never used FCP but I used to edit video on my iMac G3 400MHz with 256MB RAM back in 1999 so I can't see you'd have any issues on a modern iMac. I do have the 2.8GHz and it breezes through all the video tasks I throw at it. I expect the 2.4GHz would be similar.
    3. Crucial, or OWC or any other reliable Mac-RAM supplier (link).
    4. You should be able to pull the Ethernet from the PC and connect the iMac (or connect both at once).
    5. Difficult to answer. The screens are very shiny. My iMac faces away from the window so I don't notice it. Not sure I'd want a window behind.
    6. Apple's normal policy is a 10% restocking fee if you return the iMac through your choice. I agree with George that you should buy the minimum RAM from Apple. If you did get the 2.8GHz this would mean customizing the iMac which apparently makes returns impossible. Returns Policy.
    7. Most iMac models (including the current batch) use laptop optical drives rather than the fuill size desktop optical drives. This means that the burn speeds are lower. The maximum speed is 8x DVD burn versus the 20x or 18x you'd expect from a desktop drive today. If you do a lot of burning external (desktop size) drives can be had very cheaply.
The iMac G3 I mentioned above is still going strong after 8 years (it's had RAM and hard disk replacements but only through my choice) although I did have to replace the PRAM battery (£6) to keep it working.
    cheers

  • Odd question regarding files on a mac-formatted external drive...

I have recently purchased a Western Digital external HDD (1TB) and have synced it with my mac as a time machine.
I have also, however, moved a bunch of files from my macbook, including family movies, DVD's I've ripped, a lot of my music collection, work files and some games.
This has worked brilliantly thus far.
BUT! I have my MBP bootcamped for some boring programs for work etc. but want to be able to listen to music/play games/access files through the WD HDD... This may be obvious to many people; but it wasn't immediately obvious to me: Because the External drive is formatted for Mac, as well as 'time machine-d', it refuses to be recognised by the PC...
    Thus, my question is:
Is there a way to move files from Mac to PC (bootcamped) through an external drive that is formatted to the Mac.
If not, is there a way to move files from Mac to PC through the bootcamp disc on the Macintosh Desktop. I understand that files smaller than 4 gigs can be moved across NTFS (?) but some of the files for my work stretch as far as 11 gigs...
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated! I've been looking around the net for the past week... It's time to be proactive...
If any more info is required, please let me know.
    Ollie.

    Hi Ollie,
with the BootCamp 3.0 Drivers Apple introduced a read access from BootCamp Windows to Mac OSX partitions, but this seems to only work with internal harddisks not with external ones.
MacDrive is the choice get full read and write access on Mac OSX partitions/harddisks while in Windows http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive/
For a simple read-only access HFSExplorer can be used http://hem.bredband.net/catacombae/index2.html
The 4GB size limitation is only active on FAT32 file system not on NTFS, but Mac OSX itself can only read from NTFS partitions not write to them without additional helper like NTFS-3G http://macntfs-3g.blogspot.com/
So, with you scenario (external HD = MacOS file system) it seems that MacDrive would be the way to go.
    Hope it helps
    Stefan

  • Question regarding file locking...

    Hi all--
    Here's the essential question...
If I have a shared file across the network that will be subjected to multiple accesses from multiple clients. Most just need to read it, but some will occassionally need to write to it. If my client application obtains a lock on the file using FileLock myLock = myFileInputStream.getChannel().tryLock(), will other clients still be able to read the file?
in other words, is the file lock obtained a "read-only" lock, preventing writing but allowing reading? or will other client's be unable to read the file when someone has a FileLock on it?
Right now we use an excel spreadsheet. It's an utterly terrible solution, but what's good about the spreadsheet is that everyone can read it, but if someone has accessed it to begin with, you only have read-only access to it. Which is good...
can I do the same thing using Java file-lock? Allowing the first client who accesses it to obtain a full-permisions lock but subsequent clients only are able to obtain read-only access?
    Thanks for the help!

The docs are rather specific that all of the functionality for FileLock is platform dependent.
    So you should test it.

    1) I'm wondering if I can upgrade my hard drive to a 1TB and/or a 10,000rpm instead of the 500GB 7200rpm.  Would there be any problems for either upgrade? What effect will the rpm's have (5400/7200/10000) and how do I decide which is best for me? Can I change from HDD to SDD?  Can I change brands?  What size (in inches or cm) must the new hard drive be?  (See hard drive info below.)
    2) I believe I can access (and open) all my files on the failing 500GB HDD.  I want to install a second OS (Ubuntu) on my new hard drive, and I think the best way to do it would be to put Ubuntu on another partition. How would I go about copying my files to the new hard drive without losing any data and keeping my Win7 license?  How would/should I partition the new hard drive?  I can boot Ubuntu via a flash drive--can I make a Win7 recovery disk if Win7 won't boot?

  • I have several questions regarding Final Cut Pro X

I went to the APP Store to check out FCPX and accidentally downloaded it (v. 10.0.3)
I didn't freak out too badly as I had planned to buy it eventually, but One Click?
    Anyhow, the deed is done.
Since the application was downloaded, how do I make a backup copy? I mean, I could
burn the application to a DVD, but usually an Installer puts files in different folders in
various locations, and I would have no way of knowing where they all are. What have
    the rest of you done?
The first thing I ran into upon opening FCPX was a message saying "The selected SAN location
is already in use." At this point I didn't even know what a SAN location was. It somehow decided
it wanted to use my 3TB Seagate drive I'm using as a TimeMachine Backup drive. I think I managed
    to delete the SAN location.
But it is putting Final Cut Events on a drive I don't want to use for that, and the drive I have designated
for video does not appear within FCPX as a choice. I rebooted and it showed up for an instant and then
    disappeared.
I had FCP many years ago and you used to specify locations for saving files. As I said, I have a drive
reserved for Video and it doesn't show up within FCPX.
I have old versions of Motion and LiveType that came with FCP before. Do they work with this version?
So far I'm struggling with this. I have AppleCare. Do they support this application?
    Help please.
    james

    Tom, thanks for your Answer!
I'll just burn the FCPX app to a DVD and hope that's all the files it needs.
As for my drive, it is formatted just the same as all my other externals.
I've got a bunch of them dedicated to different types of material (photo, music, audio samples, video, etc.)
The fact that that drive shows up in FCPX and then disappears is troubling.
I don't know enough yet to know whether something is wrong or it's user error.

  • Question regarding file upload and download utility

    Hi
I am able to upload file with file browse contorl of APEX. Now i want to download the uploaded file. Is it possible that if word document is uploaded then when user clicks on it to download, that document is directly opened in microsoft word. Of if PDF file is uploaded then on download it is opened with acorobat pdf.
Requirement is like when user is downloading any uploaded file denpending on file type (text, excel, pdf, doc) relative application should opened with that document.
    Thanks in advance

That is controlled by settings in the browser that you cannot change. For instance, I have my browsers configured to use FoxIt PDF reader instead of Acrobat reader for PDFs, but no website could change that. The same is true when it comes to downloading vs opening. Sorry.

  • File Vault issues.  How can I turn it off?

After reading all about the issues people have been having with File Vault and because the constant encrypting-decrypting is slowing down my computer, I decided to turn File Vault off.
There's just one problem. I can't. Every time I try to turn off File Vault, the computer logs off, starts the operation, then I get the following error message:
"An error occurred during decryption ( An error occurred during copying ), FileVault will be turned on for this home folder and the home folder will still be encrypted."
In seeing explanations in other discussions regarding File Vault, the first thing I noticed was that I may not have had enough space to do the decryption, so I got an external hard drive, copied the contents of each of the folders inside my encrypted hard drive to the external drive (thus decrypting them), then deleted them from the internal hard drive. Then I shut the computer down to allow File Vault to re-claim the disk space. I was ultimately able to bring the free space on my hard drive to about 195 GB, with only about 35 GB in use. I continued to get the error.
Next, I repaired permissions, then verified the disk. I found a volume structure error which could not be repaired by Disk Utility, but I had Disk Warrior, which had no problem repairing it. Unfortunately, I still get the error when trying to turn File Vault off.
At this point, it is pretty safe to assume that the initial Volume Structure error caused the File Vault decryption error, and repairing it will not fix the issue. From continued reading, it would seem the next course of action is to completely back up my home folder, install the OS fresh, then manually import the data. Is there an easy way to do this? I have a lot of installed applications and settings that I don't want to go through the trouble of re-installing and re-setting.
Would it work if I set up a new user account, manually migrated the data copied to the external drive, tested to see if the new user account was working, then deleted the encrypted one?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Would it work if I set up a new user account, manually migrated the data copied to the external drive, tested to see if the new user account was working, then deleted the encrypted one
I think that's worth trying first - you could always fall back on the OS erase and install if it doesn't work out.
I would do a GetInfo on the external drive and check the Ignore Ownership box at the bottom, in order to avoid any permission problems when copying back.

  • Query regarding file content conversion using file adapter

    Hi All
I have a question regarding file content conversion in file adapter.
I have a file coming in the following format.
    AA,111,222,333
    BB,444,555,666
    CC,777,888,999
My incoming message structure has a hierarchy. The CC record is a structure part of BB record. BB record is a structure part of AA record. It is like this:
    AA,111,222,333
    <<BB,444,555,666>>
    <<<<CC,777,888,999>>>>
After file content conversion, in the resulted xml, i am getting a flat hierarchy instead of nested hierarchy.
Is it possible to get a nested hierarchy as a result of file content conversion?
    Please let me know
    Thanks
    Chandra

    Hi Udo
According to your suggestion, I am trying to use mapping.
I am getting a flat file and i am reading it.
    This is my source structure:
    AA,11,22,33
    BB,44,55,66
    CC,77,88,99
This is my required targer structure:
    AA,11,22,33
    <<BB,44,55,66>>
    <<<<CC,77,88,99>>>>
To explain this, BB record can have multiple records of CC records.
AA records can have multiple records of BB record.
I am using removecontext node function.
CC (Source)  (removecontext)-> CC (target structure)
But here, when i rightclick on source CC field in the mapping editor, i cannot see any other context except root node. So, how can i proceed here??
    Many Thanks
    Chandra
