Several Subtle Improvements to Text Handling and Other Miscellany

Don't get me wrong: Illustrator CS4 is great. I love it. And ignore, for the moment, the recent announcement that CS5 is already being rolled out in a few days. Maybe some of these things will be included in CS5. But if not, I'd make the following feature requests. I'd also love to hear if anyone has been thinking the same things.
Check this link to see a graphical overview of all the items, too:
http://www.meesez.com/illyimprove.pdf
Improvements to Text Handling
Unify text antialiasing program-wide. Right now, the pixel preview seems to rasterize text according to the "Type Optimized" algorithm, but Save for Web & Devices uses the "Art Optimized" algorithm. This creates a discrepancy between on-screen preview and web output, especially with very thin fonts. Ideally, there would be per-object antialiasing control, as in Photoshop, which would globally apply to on-screen display, pixel preview display, Save for Web & Devices, Export, and Rasterize.
a. Make an option to view and manipulate the size and position of point type areas in terms of the actual size of the glyphs present, ignoring any blank space within or between the glyphs' bounding boxes — that is, the size that would be reported if the type was converted to outlines. This is opposed to the current system, which calculates the size and position of point type areas based on the entire bounding box size of each character, even when glyphs don't extend to the all edges of the bbox (which most don't). This would make it easier to fit headlines to exact sizes without having to outline the text.
b. Allow smart guides and snapping to detect anchors and paths on live glyphs.
Allow users to specify that type should not be scaled when resizing area type boxes. With this option turned off, text boxes could be resized with the transform panel or the scale tool without their contents being stretched or squashed. (This is what currently already happens when a text area is resized using the mouse.)
Create an option to apply leading to entire paragraphs. I love being able to enter a new paragraph leading value in InDesign without having to have any characters selected.
Add vertical alignment options to area text.
Add support for balancing ragged lines within a paragraph, as in InDesign.
Add an option to automatically outline all text when saving a file as PDF. This option would be mutually exclusive with the "Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities" checkbox.
Bug fix: font selection by font name keyboard entry. Typing a font name into the font selector in both the control bar and the character palette doesn't always succeed in changing the font of the selected type (tested in Windows XP). This happens sporadically; sometimes the selector will display the new font name but the selected type will remain in the old font. Clicking on the font selector in this situation brings the user to top of the menu, making it necessary to select the desired font by scrolling through the entire list (which does work).
Other Improvements
Add a preview mode (similar to InDesign's "W" key) which hides everything outside of the current artboard. This would be useful for previewing trims, especially now that bleeds are supported.
Create an option to toggle the display of all document raster effects (while leaving them intact). This would be quite convenient when working with large files having high-resolution raster effects on several layers. In such a situation, small changes to artwork can take a long time to render.
Add support for angle (conical) gradients. I'm guessing that this feature has not yet been implemented either because angle gradients don't interact well with other types of gradients, or perhaps because they can't be transformed into gradient mesh objects due to the "singularity" at the vertex. But couldn't this problem be resolved by being discreet about what's allowed in terms of file saving and conversions to gradient mesh? I would think the folks at Adobe could figure this one out, if it is indeed a mathematical problem.
Bug fix: antialiasing on shapes that run exactly along pixel boundaries. See diagram for more details.

  • A way to "re-connect" bezier handles and other path editing techniques

    I've searched and rummaged through tutorials for days but I haven't found a way to do a few things that I've come to think of as essential when it comes to path manipulation.
    I'm using Illustrator CS4 (on Windows XP SP3) and I'm coming from a background of Inkscape. Within Inkscape, there are several handy tools that are missing from Illustrator that I haven't found workarounds for. Here's a list of these tools and a brief description for each of how they work within Inkscape:
    ]- "Shift + C" with anchor point selected: this will make the bezier handles of the point move independently of each other.
    ]- "Shift + S" with anchor point selected:
    b this will "connect" the bezier handles
    so that moving one side moves the other side relatively (and opposite to each other so that the bezier handles form a straight line).
    (note: in Inkscape there is no way to make the bezier handles relative and not form a straight line, which is something I know would be useful)
    ]- "Shift + Y" with anchor point selected: this will make the bezier handles collinear (like shift + S) plus make the lengths of both handles the same.
    (note: another possible feature would be to make the handle lengths relative, but not the same)
    ]- "Shift + Click + Drag" on a selected anchor point with the path selection tool: this creates one bezier handle in the direction you drag. This is very useful if you don't want to change the curve of the other side.
    With these functions (preferably including the suggestions I've noted), path editing in Illustrator would be much easier.
    On the topic of Inkscape's path editing abilities, there is also a way within the program to delete anchor points in two ways:
    ]The default way is to press "Del," which deletes the anchor points and makes the anchor points around the deleted points attempt to fill the area as close as possible to how it was with points.
    ]The second way is to press "Ctrl + Del," which deletes the points and does nothing to the surrounding points.
    Inkscape's default deletion method is a huge time saver when you simply have a surplus of anchor points; you can the excess and the shape maintains itself (often the result is for the shape to smooth itself out).
    I hope that these suggestions are described well enough to be understood. I also hope that, in understanding these potential techniques, you can see their potential usefulness within Illustrator.

    Lee,
    All those functions are present in Illustrator. I personally think their interface stinks in some ways, but they are there.
    > "Shift + C" with anchor point selected: this will make the bezier handles of the point move independently of each other.
    Convert AnchorPoint Tool. Press Alt to invoke it when the Pen tool is active. Otherwise, switch to it with Shift C. Use it to drag a smoothPoint's handle, and it will convert the point to a cornerPoint, letting you move the handle you click independently.
    > "Shift + S" with anchor point selected: this will "connect" the bezier handles so that moving one side moves the other side relatively (and opposite to each other so that the bezier handles form a straight line).
    Again, the Convert tool. Mousedown on an anchorPoint and drag. The point will become a smoothPoint and both handles will extend symmetrically.
    There are also buttons to convert selected points between smooth and corner in the Control Panel when anchorPoints are selected.
    > (note: in Inkscape there is no way to make the bezier handles relative and not form a straight line, which is something I know would be useful)
    In my musings about Bezier drawing interfaces, I've often imagined a metaphor of "joints" rather than points. (That's really what they are: two adjacent Bezier curves with coincident endpoints.) Joints can be "hinged" or "locked"; "bent" or "straight". They can also be "dislocated". Joints can be locked bent or locked straight, and can be moved either way.
    > "Shift + Y" with anchor point selected: this will make the bezier handles collinear (like shift + S) plus make the lengths of both handles the same. (note: another possible feature would be to make the handle lengths relative, but not the same)
    See second item, above.
    > With these functions (preferably including the suggestions I've noted), path editing in Illustrator would be much easier.
    They are there; thier interface is just different.
    > On the topic of Inkscape's path editing abilities, there is also a way within the program to delete anchor points in two ways:

    Not present in AI. (Not associated with a direct point manipulation tool, anyway. Commands like Simplify try to remove points while retaining the shape.)
    > The second way is to press "Ctrl + Del," which deletes the points and does nothing to the surrounding points.
    The Delete AnchorPoint Tool. Invoke it by pressing the minus key. Similarly, there is an Add AnchorPoint Tool, invoked by pressing the plus key. By default, the Pen Tool does that automatically to selected paths, but you can turn it off in prefs (unlike the infuriating auto join behavior, which affects UNSELECTED paths.)
    > Inkscape's default deletion method is a huge time saver...I hope that...you can see their potential usefulness within Illustrator
    Just about every user of programs like Illustrator, FreeHand, Draw, Canvas know very well the advantages of keyboard modifiers for such things, and all such programs provide them. (Although I do consider AI's treatment considerably more tedious than FreeHand's.)
    You need to spend some time looking at the keyboard shortcuts described in the Help files, and carefully practicing them. You need to know how to invoke them while in the process of drawing paths with the Pen.

  • Several LR3 issues - Crashes, memory dumps, and other oddities

    I recently built a new PC dedicated to my photo work.
    i7 2600k, 16gb DDR 3 ripjaws, 128GB crucial m4 SSD, (2) x 1TB 7200 HDDs (mirrored), Sapphire Radeon HD 5570.
    The first month or so of use LR worked great. However, recently I have been getting several errors and oddities.
    1) Randomly closes. I can restart it without a problem and pick back up where I left off. There are not warnings or signs that it is about to close.. it just does.
    2) "Unexpected end of file". Unable to edit photo. Preview does show, however. I have never seen this error before on other machines.
    3) Memory dumps. I assume this is related to LR3 as that is the only program I am actively using when it happens (Chome is always open as well, however) I will have the dump files examined to know for sure.
    4) Something new that just started today. In the preview bar on the bottom, as I scroll through the photos I see the previews of other photos.. some photos from other folders I took weeks or months ago. When I hover over the image it changes to what it should be. I am seeing 2 instances of this. 1 with a photo from this particular shoot and one from one I did over a month ago. Everything I scroll back and forth (rapidly or not) as the previews load it loads the wrong files first, multiple times (around 8 or 9 in a row) and then they slowly change to what it should be.
    I am not sure if I am properly describing this error but it is really weird.
    Also, this seems to only happen on the images off a CF card. I was borrowing a friends D200 as a 2nd body for a party. When I scroll through the images off my SD card I do not see the issue appear. When I get to the CF portion of the folder is when I see the problem....
    I just updated LR today but these issues occured prior to the update and still exist afterwards.
    Do I need to do a fresh install of LR?
    What precautions do I need to take in doing so to insure my catalogue stays intact?
    Thanks for your help.

    I am still having issues.
    The crash dumps are far less frequent now. I think it may have been a catalogue issue maybe? I started a new one and things were better.
    However, I am consistantly getting the "Lightroom has stopped working" and it closes down..... repeatedly. Very Very annoying.
    It is not a major issue to just restart Lightroom, esp since it is on an SSD, it pops right back up instantly.
    All of my files are on the HDD, however, not the SSD.
    I had reinstalled LR3 once before which did not help. Any other suggestinos?
    I can't imagine a reinstall of Windows would do anything for me. I have no issues with anything other than LR.
    Could my video card be playing a role in the errors? I do notice weird random artifacts in my images sometimes when I add a brush stroke, or clone something out. Or sometimes just simply zooming in will great these weird multicolored lines in the image. Zooming out makes it go away. It is random when it shows up and often times closing and reopening LR will make it go away. So these are not permanent artifacts in the image unless I export the file with them showing. This leads me to think maybe the video card is having some issues. All drivers are up to date. It is not a high end card. Based on all my research when buidling this machine, a basic video card is all that is needed as RL is CPU and memory intensive, which is where I put most of my $. (i7 2600k and 16GB DDR3)

  • Suggest improvements for nokia n73 and other devic...

    Nokia n73 is the most succsesful device ever made by nokia. But you noticed that the images taken by the n73 are little blury and the video is also poor. If theres is nothing harware problem why not nokia fix theme with software update. Why not nokia try to make n73 just like n78. This will be great if nokia update n73 software and fix the problem. N78 also powerfull device but its buttons make it lazy. N78 will be more greater if its button replaced with bigger and esiar. And the improved new device will launched n78i.

    I would not bother getting a nokia at the moment.....
    If you can live without nokia drive for now then i would hold back for atleast 6 months and see what happens.
    Nokia have slipped down the chain a bit and are not as almighty as they use to be.
    There are loads of probs with the Lumia 800 and the 710 is not all that good compared to nokia's of old.
    I got the 710 because of nokia drive and it is no where near as good as the old Ovi navigation...
    In fact the whole phone is a let down....with poor camara, poor sat nav, poor speaker and poor battery...
    The Actual phone is a nice design and the screen is not bad...WP7.5 looks interesting but still needs a lot of work to catch up with the others.
    Not sure what the Omnia is like...but if i knew then what i know now about the 710 i would of gone for the HTC Radar and just used my N8 for Sat Nav.

  • 6280 call handling and other problems

    Hello. I have got some problems on my new Nokia 6280.:
    1. Device sometimes reloads spontaneously.
    2. In case of incoming call if a call waiting is activating sound reroutes for a few seconds to louspeaker and than it goes back. It breaks my confidentiality. I can handle one call and when the second call is coming everybody can hear everything the subcriber on the other side speaking. Can you explain?
    3. The speakerphone (usual, not loudspeaker) is trembling when someone's speak on the other side.
    4.When a make a call and I am waiting for the answer from B side a can hear some backgroung peep.
    My firmware version is 3.6
    Can these problems be eliminated?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Kilch,
    You might want to take your phone into a Nokia Authorised Service Point, the engineer there will be able to take a look at your phone and advise you on the best course of action.
    You can find the nearest to you on the Repair page.
    Cheers

  • Frozen cell text color and other formatting inconsistencies

    I am using numbers to maintain course grade books. On each of two gradebooks a single cell has spontaneously changed its text color. Nothing can induce these cells to return to the appropriate color.
    Along the same line, I find that sometimes it is impossible to select a row or column, and to change the cell attributes for all cells at one time. That is, applying a color or formatting feature will affect some cells, but not others. However, those cells can be changed individually.
    Has anyone else encountered such problems?

    Hello
    Use the Inspector to check if there is a "conditional formatting rule" linked to the offending cell(s).

  • Text Align and Other annoyances

    I have upgraded from CS3 to CS5 and while i am mostly happy there are some really annoying bugs, features, or pieces of ill thought out logic in Dreamweaver.
    I might be wrong but by default Dreamweaver is a a WYSIWYG editor. Therefore this should make it ideal for editing websites which have text in them. Lets assume that websites include single email campaigns, small static HTML brochure sites, through to large scale CMS websites. In each of these cases i might have the need to align a single piece of text to the right.
    Now DW suggests everything like this should be driven by CSS. In in 90% of cases for general text layout i would agree i.e. default paragraph text size, default alignment, default line spacing, etc. These can then easily be adjusted throughout the website large or small by changing a simple bit off CSS in your style sheet.
    But what if you just need 1 line of text to be different from "default" - CSS is not approrpiate here, and infact it would result in more code to achieve the same goal. why should i have to write a new style into my style sheet, and then link it with a class name, when a simple align="right" will work in that instance. In fact in all instances the chances are that piece of code will be shorter than the class="text-right" definition to apply the CSS (ignoring the CSS code too).
    So why take the align buttons off the property inspector bar? Why make the developers life harder when he is using a tool to make it easier?
    Another issue - which probably is more of a bug than anything. In code, Shift + Tab should outdent the code right. Highlight a block of code and this works. Why then does doing this for a single line of code delete the code?
    I upgraded from CS3 because i was told that was the worst performing version of creative suite out there. And it was buggy as hell. But i am now finding that CS5 is not a great deal better - this applies through the other products too with Illustrator crashing as much as it ever did, il thought out removed features, etc. I am appalled by the quality of the new CS5 - especially as in my upgrade the fee was a good 30% more expensive than the american alternative.
    And before you ask - the machine where i am experiencing this is more than adequate, Quad Core, 6gig of Ram, and on a fresh install of Windows 7.
    An unhappy customer.

    You may need to adjust your workflow to get the most out of CSS.
    I find it works much better to identify the CSS IDs, selectors and class names I will be using in the site.  This bit of pre-planning gives me a basic stylesheet from which I can grab styles at will and add more to as needed.
    /**BASIC LAYOUT**/
    #wrapper { }
    #header { }
    #content { }
    #footer { }
    /**TEXT STYLES**/
    #header h1 { }
    #content h2 { }
    #content h3 { }
    #content p { }
    #footer p { }
    /**RE-USABLE CLASSES**/
    .floatLt {float:left; width: 40%;}
    .floatRt {float:right; width: 40%}
    .clearing {clear:both}
    .center {text-align:center}
    .right {text-align:right}
    /**LINKS**/
    a { }
    a:link { }
    a:visited { ]
    a:hover,
    a:active,
    a:focus { }
    And if you plug all this into an external CSS file to which your HTML documents are linked, sitewide style changes take a minute or two instead of weeks and hours.

  • Conversation bubble text alignment (and other wrapping) broken... help.

    I have a Gen 2 8GB iPod Touch running the latest iOS4 (can't install iOS5 on this one).
    My problem is that text no longer wraps correctly in chat "conversation" bubbles (like in twitter app or words with friends chat interface).
    They're all over the shop.
    Other "Wrapping" and "Clear" type instances in other apps also fail to correctly insert the "line break" required for correct rendering.
    Can I upload screenshots here? YES!
    See examples.
    Tried rebooting iPod etc, btw.
    Many apps affected.
    This one is obvious. (Words with Friends)
    In landscape mode, these are meant to be be long boxes, one per line. ("Consume" App)
    The text at the bottom is meant to show a number of lines of information. They overlap on one line here. ("Consume" App)
    Thanks,
    NY

    No... I haven't.
    What kind of impact will that have for me?
    Such as:
    - Current place in Audiobook
    - Apps login (ie, Facebook, Words with friends)
    - Current games in progress (WWF)
    - App data (ie, Smurfs)
    It looks easy to do in iTunes... just wondering about the repercussions.
    Thanks for your input, lllaass.

When you go into the Google serach or text messaging application is the Microphone for voice-to-text gone or is it just not working?

  • Is it possible to define one language for every imported text? And other problems when placing text.

    Problem is, that Indesign cc 2014 does not recognize language correctly. In my case it should always be slovenian (and documents like doc and docx are set to slovenian), but it set it as slovakian. I get many documents from different programs (Word, Libre Office, Open Office ...). And setting every one after placing it into document is time consuming. Word import was working great in InDesign 5.5. Now it just mixes local character formating. Also: importing docx takes too long, and when in document is some picture, it just freeze. So I must first open every doc/docx file and delete every picture/logo that is inside.
    Any suggestions?

    Check the language of your default Character Style. If it's set to Slovakian, change it to Slovenian with no documents open.

    Please help!!!

    Your phone is in "recovery" mode, which means you data on your phone is already gone.  You have no other choice but to restore your phone.  If you've not been backing up regularly and importing your photos to your computer for safe keeping as is strongly recommended, then you've learned a very hard lesson.

        Hi PLEBITA.
    It must be difficult being so far away from  your husband, even more so when there is very little communication! Let's see what's going on. What phone do you have? Does he have a VZW phone and plan? When did you start getting these errors? Has he moved to a different city/ state in Mexico? What dialing pattern are you using? Does he have a Mexico plan that is possibly exceeded for this bill cycle? While in the U.S., (from your phone), please try dialing *228 [send], option 1 to re-program your phone. Also, if possible, please try deleting your thread of messages with him, and then restart your phone. He can try deleting his thread of messages and restarting his phone too.  Also- you can select the following link to make sure you're both using the correct dialing pattern. http://bit.ly/MDSZPK

    I lost a few mac apps when I had to have my harddrive replaced..........since it went out and it was under a factory recall. And when they replaced it they couldn't get everything off the hard-drive. So is there a way I can get the apps back.

    There are several ways to get those iLife and other App's from your original Disc Set.

  • Better captioning and text handling in print module

    I don't know if this has been brought up before, but I would like to see a bit more sophisticated text handling for captioning in the Print module.  It sure would be nice to be able to choose a font, position the text, choose a color, add a drop shadow, etc.  Nothing too crazy, but photo captions are a pretty important part of some photographers' workflow, and as of now I have to move between PS and LR to get any kind of nice text on the page, which interrupts the LR workflow.  I'd love to do almost all my work in LR and only use PS for the real heavy pixel lifting.
    Thanks for a great product!

    I used to be able to get text from a Word doc (copy it), and then go into my CS4 InDesign file and paste it into a waiting box that had a paragraph style assigned to it and boom, it would take on the assigned paragraph style of that text box. Now it brings in the style from wherever the text came from. If the font looks similar to what was there it can be too hard to tell that it's different. When you are working on a book with 200 pages and copying text from Word docs and dropping it in here and there in InDesign, it causes alot of extra work and problems.
    In fact I have lost alot of security functions I used to have in CS4 in CC2014 in InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat and it is making me want to go back to CS4 in a hurry.

    I actually FINALLY found the answer!!!! In the preferences area you choose Clipboard Handling and then you choose "Text Only" under When Pasting Text and Tables from Other Applications (see photo).
