Severe corruption of .MOV files in Lightroom & unusable processing speed

Hi all,
I run on an Intel i7 quad core, 12 GB Ram, 2 GB Graphics Card (nvidia), Raid 0, 2x512 GB Harddisk space (1 TB), Windows Vista 64bit using the latest cut of Lightroom 3.4.1 64bit.
Using a Canon 7D with latest firmware updates, for RAW/JPG/MOV - this is the only source of all files that I currently use in Lightroom.
First Question regarding corruption of .MOV files:
Once I copy my files over from the camera onto my computer, I can play all .MOV files seemlessly with no flaws or hiccups (using multiple movie players), after I import the files in the directory (this includes the .JPG's, .RAW's, and .MOV's) into Lightroom, my .MOV files no longer play on my computer, the files begin to stutter and jolt, and are completely unusable. You can imagine my frustration as I've only recently added a huge chunk of my files to be cataloged by Lightroom, resulting in the last years worth of .MOV files being corrupted and ruined.
I am wondering if anyone has had this issue before and if they've found a way to fix it? I understand I could simply un-tick the import of .MOV files (and do so from now on), but I find it baffling that Lightroom is ruining the .MOV files - as it's not actually meant to touch the original files themselves is it? It's meant to add it's own layer of things to do to that file, stored in its own catalogue never meant to actually change the original files themselves.
Second question regarding unusable processing speed:
When DEVELOPing in Lightroom (I develop on two 24" monitors, both displaying at 1920x1200) it can take anywhere between 10-20 seconds for what I'm actually doing to take effect, ie. spot removal or changing the noise levels of a photo. My catalog currently has 10438 photos in it - is this overwhelming for Lightroom?
I love Lightroom and its functionality - when I first started using it these problems didn't seem to exist, so I'm unaware if it's an update or if it's just the increase in photos it has catalog'd that're bogging it down. I would love to resolve these matters as Lightroom is definitely where I want to be.
regards,
Emilio

Thanks for your response,
After what you said, in having absolutely no issue with .MOV files, I decided to ensure every drive on my computer was up-to-date and all software packages were final cut versions.
When I started playing my .MOV files (using VLC version 1.1.10 as standard), the files played fine after a graphics card update/VLC update/Windows system update/computer reboot (Lightroom NOT loaded) - So you are absolutely right, Lightroom is NOT in any way affecting my original .MOV Files, however:
When I then loaded Lightroom up, and started to then play my .MOV files (whilst Lightroom was running, and still using VLC (standard default player) (no other packages loaded), the files would begin to jolt/jitter/ struggle to play again.
If I monitor Task manager/Resources the only noticable heavy usage on Lightroom is having dedicated itself 1.7 GB of memory (not that much considering 12 GB is available), but also that clicking on any picture (whilst in grid-view, showing .CR2+.JPG as one, second monitor showing preview image) all of my 8 CPU's would spike to 90-100% for a second or so then drop down - fair enough.
I then close Lightroom and my .MOV files still don't play accurately - after a while (approx 30 minutes) my .MOV files will play seemlessly fine again.
So, I stand corrected that Lightroom is, in fact, NOT corrupting my files and regret my title choice, but is Lightroom doing something to my system which is making it hang/struggle whilst Lightroom seems to flush/go through its buffer?
Also what import preview do you set your catalog to? 1:1 then wait for it to complete the full import or standard?
Another major issue I'm having is when exporting multiple files (200+ or so), I notice the exporting process is fast initially then dramatically slows down my whole computer as all my RAM (the full 12 GB's) gets sucked up - after 60 or so photo exports Lightroom would have used the full 12 GB Ram I have available, and stopping the export does NOT free up the Ram - I need to completely close Lightroom (which then frees up the used RAM).
Thanks in advanced

  • Is there a way to change the Digitised Date for Mov files in Lightroom?

I am scanning some old photos.  Unfortunately Programs such as Dropbox and OneDrive display Mov files by their digitised Date.
Consequently, My scanned photos are shown by the date that I scanned them. I can not seem to find anyway in LightRoom to change the Digitised Date so that they are shown on OneDrive/Dropbox in the correct order on my iPad.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Your subject line says "Mov files" (which are video files), but your message talks about scanning old photos.  I'll address the old photos issue.
Because there are so many dates/times associated with photos, and because every program feels free to use its own names, it's critical to be pedantically precise about terminology. The date/time a photo was originally taken (when the shutter was pressed) is called Date/Time Original or Capture Date. The date/time a photo was transferred to digital media is called Date/Time Digitized (when the analog file was scanned or when the digital-camera shutter was pressed).
A good rule of hygiene is to ensure every photo has a Date/Time Original (capture date).  Typically only digital archivists care about maintaining Date/Time Digitized.  If you ensure that every photo has a Date/Time Original, then pretty much any modern app and Web site will order your photos correctly.
In LR, you set Date/Time Original using the Metadata > Edit Capture Time command.  By default, LR won't write the capture time back to the file's metadata, so depending on how you are transferring photos to other programs, the capture time won't necessarily get transferred.  So you either need to do Metadata > Save Metadata To File, or better, set the option Catalog Settings > Metadata > Automatically Write Changes Into XMP.
Unfortunately, LR's Edit Capture Time isn't very flexible with dealing with scanned photos in which the precise date/time is not known.  So some people like to set an entire batch to, say, 1963/10/01 00:00:00, while others like to have each photo set in increasing increments of 1 second, so that programs will at least maintain the known relative ordering (which comes from the film or slide ordering).   To do that, you'll need a third-party plugin, e.g. ExifMeta or CaptureTime To EXIF.

  • Cannot import Canon 500D .MOV files into Lightroom 4.1

I've seen a few problems on here about similar issues.
I've imported .mov files before, but a perfectly valid (short, circa 10 seconds) .MOV clip just will not preview or import into Lightroom 4.1 on my Win7 x64 system.
The movie will play fine directly from the card, but just won't import!
    Any ideas, chaps?

  • Why do I get an error importing .mov files in Lightroom 4.2 RC

I have Lightroom 4.2 RC on a Windows 7 desktop and laptop. Mov files from a Nikon D4 import fine on the desktop, but I get an error importing the same files on my laptop and they get skipped. My laptop is actually newer and more powerful than my desktop.

I was getting this message: "There is a problem with the video file" when attempting to import video files on Lightroom 4.1 (and after upgrading to 4.2) on Win7/64-bit.
The video files were M-JPEG/AVI and H.264/MP4.
Seeing a recommendation elsewhere, I uninstalled DivX and rebooted.
This resolved the issue for me!

  • Unable to move files in Lightroom 4.4

Very recently I have lost the ability to move files from one folder to another in Lightroom 4.4.  I was highlighting the files I wanted to move and then I would drag them to the folder I wanted to move the files to.  Now if I highlight numerous files when I try to drag the files Lightroom will just highlight the file my cursor is hovering over.  It then won't let me drag the file to the folder I desire.  Please help!  This is putting a serious damper on my workflow!

Grid mode in Library module, make sure you, click and hold, on the center (not the border) of one of the selected photos. Then drag them to the folder you wish to move them to.

Is there a way to recover a corrupted .mov file?
    Please Please Please help !

    Hello,
Corrupt movies like yours can be recovered. It's quite hard, you have to rebuild the movie index.
There's a free application called Treasured to diagnose and preview your damaged movie files:

Treasured also explains how to contact the right person to get your movie repaired (me

  • Can I move files in Lightroom, and I have 5.5 to my Creative Cloud File in Lightroom?

    Moving files in Lightroom...

No moving of files is needed.
Just launch the Creative Cloud version of Lightroom. It should find your existing LR 5.5 catalog and make use of it; if it does not happen automatically, in the CC version of LR use File->Open Catalog

  • Lightroom 4 - Processing Speed Restriction

    Hey together,
im trying the trail version of lightroom 4 tonight. the big problem for me is that if i am in develop mode
the the speed working speed of lightroom breaks down. its much more slower than lightroom 3 in development mode.
If i choose the standard module and tunes up the brightness, lights, backlights or adjust the black saturation,
the previews and the slide regulators will works ticket of.
So i dont think that the problem is my PC because thats are my Technical Specs:

    Win 7 System Index : 7.5
Anyone an Idea why Lightroom 4 is working so slowly ??

Same problem here: Lightroom 3.6 had excellent speed. Version 4 frequently bogs down in editing (similar to memory problems in an early version of Lightroom 1.x or 2.x, I don't remember which -- hopefully Adobe can fix memory management like they did to create version 3.6).
Changing from Edit mode to Develop mode (and back) isseems now to be 10 to 50% slower.
After changing edit sliders on a larger TIF file (4000x6000 pixels), then attempting to zoom at 100% pixel level will never focus, or takes much longer than version 3. Exiting Lightroom 4 and restarting often helps what seems to be a memory management problem. The same file will then focus at 100% pixel view. Editing RAW files is faster than TIF, but LR version 4 is slower than 3.6.
My setup: catalog is 3 gigabytes in size with 70,000 images. I have plenty of hard drive space (481 gb free on a 1.8 tb drive), 4 gb RAM, 2.4 Ghz, Windows Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 2. No problem in previous Lightroom version 3.6.

  • Lightroom's Processing Speed

Can anyone tell me why Lightroom is so much slower processing images than Photoshop? I can remove dust spots much faster in photoshop. Everything seems to be slooow in Lightroom? Photoshop works fine. I have more than adequate RAM and hard drive space. I have been working with RAW files. Also I had the Beta of LR but have removed it since installing LR 1.0 I don't remember having problems with the Beta.

From any perspective, speed relies on many complex factors. It is abjectly relative and certainly subjective, espcially if taken as a measure of expectations.
The best comparisons are between similar apps on a given machine. Timed. Speed in the overall sense is measured by how fast the same operations can be performed on two similar apps on the same machine on real world examples.
Since LR and Bridge 2 beta 2 use virtually the same code for their develop features--although one is browser based and the other DB based--some important overall speed comparisons can be made.
Workflow speed is what counts for me. How long does it take me to open a directory of newly downloaded images, sort them, cull them, develop them, and ingest them into a DAM.
I did a test of forty NEFs yesterday, running them from a download Directory through Bridge, renaming, keywording, develop processing them, and ingesting them into Iview, then ingesting them into LR and making the same develop edits and other operations (that gives LR a slight edge because by then I knew just how I wanted each developed). Bridge + Iview was 60% faster. Why? Ingestion is very slow in LR, previews and all file operations (this required making 5 new client/subject folders in each app and sorting the files to them) much faster in Bridge, and ingestion into Iview was going on in the background through watched folders.
By the way, I ran the same test using IDimager as the DB based DAM and the results were virtually the same as with Iview.
For me, whether one app does one little step in workflow a bit faster or slower than another similar app is not critical, but the overall time to fully process a batch of images from start to finish is definitely the measure of 'speed'.
I think one can draw the conclusion that LR's speed--no matter what machine its on, is relatively 'slow' measured against the closest competition (on a PC--Macs are a different story) at this time. And it will be until Adobe rectifies the bottlenecks created by having everything dependent on I/O through Library. Nothing wrong with the concept--it just needs modifications, tuning, and optimization. We have read about the individual problems contributing to the bottlenecking, so I won't rehearse them. But, making the changes will take time. And the most important test of LR's 'speed' will be possible then.

  • .MOV file not recognized

Apologies if this issue has been addressed before...
Today I discovered that Finder is not recognizing several of my .MOV files. These are usually displayed as a small icon (image) from the video. Nor can these videos be played in QuickTime. I sincerely hope this can be resolved as the masters were deleted from my iPhone 5 upon upload from Image Capture.
    My specs:
    MacBook Pro OSX  10.9.5
    2.5 GHZ Intel Core i5
    8 GB RAM
    QuickTime 10.3
    Many thanks for your input/suggestions.
    Best,
    Brandt

    Hi,
there are two possibilities: The first one is, that the files are broken and thus can't be viewed. The second possibility is that the .mov files are using a codec your Quicktime Player can't display. You have to check this first. Open one of your .mov files with a tool like Media Inspector (http://mediainspector.massanti.com). This will show a lot of details of the movie clip including the used codec.
However, if you have shot the footage with your iPhone 5 the codec should be H.264 (or AVC, which is just another name for the same). Quicktime should be able to view it.
    Please post more details.

    Guenther

  • .mov files play on my computer but not on friend's....

I burned several QuickTimePro-created .mov files to a DVD which I then sent to a friend. When she received it, she was unable to play any of the files and was directed to a webpage with lots of 3rd party plugins with no clear idea which one was needed.
Under Info on the files I see they are encoded with Sorenson H.263, MPEG Layer 3.
My friend has regular QuickTime (not Pro).
    Thanks!

    Thanks for your help.
She tried that but still no luck.
When she tries to play the file, QuickTime launches, bringing up a black box with no video or sound. After trying the maneuver you suggested, the only difference was that a progress bar appeared at the bottom of the black box and moved, as if a video was playing. However, still no video or sound.
    Hmmm.....

  • Enable "Edit Capute Time..." for movie files

It's great that you now can import movie files in Lightroom 3 but you are unable to edit the capture time. Since I edited the capture time of some of my photos the movies (taken on the same date / time) are now not in the right place when I sort by Capture Time. Please fix this Adobe team! Thanks!

    Some workarounds:
    1. LR recognizes the .thm sidecars for video files, which are just JPEG files.  You can rename the sidecar to have a .jpg extension, change its DateTimeOriginal field (capture time) using LR or some other tool, then rename it back to .thm, then reimport the video file into your catalog.
    2. For video files without .thm sidecars, LR uses the date-created of the file itself. You can use a third-party tool to change the date-created and then re-import the file ino your catalog.
    3. Use Jeffrey Friedl's video plugin or my Any File plugin to import the video into your catalog.  You'll then be able to use LR to edit the capture time, and you'll also be able to write all metadata back to the proxy/sidecar files the plugins create for the videos (LR 3 doesn't let you write metadata back to files).

  • How do I combine an .m2v file and an .ac3 file into a .mov file ??

    Hello,
I had a question regarding Demuxing M2V and AC3 files so that they can be combined into a .mov file.
A few years ago I converted a .mov file into an .m2v and an .AC3 using Final Cut Pro. I lost the FCP Project and .mov files and only have the .m2v and .ac3 files left.   When I tried to combine them together in FCP, the audio did not match up anymore even though it matches on DVD Studio Pro.    I was told that I needed demux the files.   How do you do that ???
Thanks so much for your time !!!

    Doug,
Am posting the workflow discussed in my last email here in the event others might be interested.
Best workflow I've found to resync and convert the M2V/AC3 elementary stream files to an MOV ProRes422/AIFF file are as follows:
    1) Convert the AC3 audio file to AIFF. (My system is configured for AC3 so I used QT 7 Pro here. My only compaint at this point is that my original AC3 file was DD5.1 and my QT 7 Pro component only supports stereo conversions.)
    2) Simultaneously drop-import the original M2V file along with the converted AIFF file to MPEG Streamclip (requires the QT MPEG-2 Playback component be installed).
    3) Sample playback of the combined data to ensure audio and video are correctly in sync throughout the file.
    4) Use the MPEG Streamclip "Export to QuickTime" File menu option to export the current date to the target Apple ProRes422 video target you want and pass the AIFF PCM audio through to the MOV file container without further processing.
    5) Import the ProRes422/AIFF MOV file to your FCP bin and reset project default codec use to match imported file when asked so you don't have to do any re-rendering for final output.
    6) I re-checked file playback in the Preview window to ensure A/V was still in sync before beginning edits in the project timeline.
All went well for me using this workflow. You may want to give it a try and let us know if it worked as well for you.
    Good luck!

  • Imovie 09 fails to import h.264 .mov file 1280x528

    Hi,
When I import a .mov file it seems to process but doesn't actually bring the video into imovie.
    Here's the file specs:
    .mov
    h.264, 1280x528 millions
    AAC, 2 channels 44100 Hz
I've also tried with an mp4 (mpeg4 codec) and am mp4 (h.264 codec) of the same clip and none of them import successfully.
They were all converted from a .mkv file using iFunia MKV converter.
