Severe Harddrive Capacity Discrepancy
Hello!
To begin with, I am using a white 2008 Macbook. I purchased it new, and have had few serious problems. I am running OSX Leopard 10.5.8, having never upgraded to Snow Leopard due to only have 512 MB of SDRAM.
I've been doing some cleaning on my computer because I have been receiving error messages about my Start Up disk being full to capacity, and I've noticed something troubling. My hard drive has a capacity of 60 gigabytes and my account on the computer is only taking up ~11 gigabytes, but even after rooting through my old files and using OnyX my hard drive claims to only have 2.76 gigs of free space! That's over 45 gigs of harddrive space that I cannot track down.
Thank you for any help.
Begin by running OmniDiskSweeper to find where the space is going. http://www.omnigroup.com/products/omnidisksweeper/ (it's free)

Someone else brought this up, and it made me investigate my harddrive further.
I bought an 80 gig harddrive (though it's actual capacity is listed as 74.21 gigs ... I don't know enough to know if this is normal. I've been assuming it is).
I'm using up 34 gigs in my house folder and 3.19 in my applications folder. There's nothing on my desktop. So that means I'm using up 37.19 gigs of memory. But I only have 23.91 gigs available. That's only 61.1 gigs that are accounted for. Where are the other 13 gigs? Is OSX really this big? Am I missing something here? One thing I always suggest when getting a new Mac is to wipe the hard drive clean and reinstall from the System disc. That way you can customize your installation and not install Microsoft Office Text drive, plus remove Garageband, iDVD, and their files if you don't use it.
Another thing to look into is a program called "delocalizer." It removes foreign languages from your Mac (assuming you only work in English and have no need for languages.) It strips foreign languages from all your apps. One can save 1-3GB just removing foreign languages. -
IPhone 4 audio capacity discrepancy
my iPhone 4 "capacity bar" (displayed when the phone is plugged into itunes) says that i have 10.6 GB of audio, but i only have 8.7 GB of audio in my itunes library, which is synced with my iPhone 4
why is there a discrepancy of almost 2 GB?
i only have 500mb of album artwork, and have no podcasts, movies, audiobooks, or TV in my library
i have 6 music videos and 80 applications, but they are each apportioned there own "capacity section" within the iphones "capacity bar" and therefore do not account for the massive increase
what is even more confusing is that if i click on the little arrow next to the iphone under "devices" and highlight "music", the audio figure matches perfectly with the 8.7 GB figure from the itunes library - so why then does the capacity bar say a completely different figure.
does anyone else experience this?
i am using itunes 10.0.1 and have iOS 4.1 installed on my phone
your opinions or advice would be greatly appreciatedThanks - I should have included more detail, let me explain further. When I play music from my iphone 4 through my car stereo, either through the auxiliary setting using a headphone jack, or through the wireless bluetooth setting, only the right channel plays. Same thing when I play through headphones - only the right channel plays. Didn't use to happen, and I haven't dropped the phone or damaged it in any way. I can't find any settings to adjust as far as right or left channels. I've read where some think it could be the headphone jack, but that wouldn't explain the problem happening through bluetooth also.
I've tested other iphone 4's both ways in my car, and they play through both channels. The car radio also plays through both channels. Any ideas? -
Hard disc and home folder capacity discrepancy
hi. am using a g5 imac , tiger.
my hard disc shows a capacity of 150gb but my home folder (and hence my documents, photos, music folders etc) show only 46gb available.
I havent partitioned my drive to the best of my knowledge.
I have tried running disc utility to repair permissions with no success - anyone know how i can make this "hidden " capacity available?
many thanksYou are saying that your hard drive in Disk Utility shows 150 GB, and when you click Info that also shows 150GB? This would be the hardware drive details, indicated by the name of a drive manufacturer like Hitachi or Seagate? Plus when you select that and click Info, the pop up shows the same capacity (followed by the actual number of bytes)?
Offset under the hardware drive in the initial Disk Utility list will be any partitions that you have mounted. If selected, they will show the name under which they are mounted on the Mac. That should give a complete list (bottom of page) of the mount point, drive size, number of bytes used, and number of bytes free. What do they say? -
Current Battery Capacity Discrepancy?
I'm confused.
My computer is functioning perfectly, just that the battery is a little bizarre.
I use coconutBattery to determine charge capacity and stuff.
It tells me that the current battery capacity (4422 mAh) is higher than the original battery capacity (4400 mAh).
It is still the original, stock battery (it fell outside of the recall). Could the app just be reading it wrong, or what?Goo goo gajoob, YMC. I don't think you have anything to worry about. The nominal 4400mAh capacity of your battery is only an approximation, and its indicated capacity is so close to it that I suspect it is an accurate actual reading.
We occasionally hear from folks whose batteries are reported to have capacities in excess of 12,000-20,000mAh. They clearly aren't getting good readouts, and need to replace their batteries. One indication of a very old, tired battery is an inability to report its condition properly. -

Capacity profile in order control spro
hi
in order control of pm spro
capacity profile-field
i fnd generally people left it bank
can i manintain the all the capacity(man) of maintenace in profile
and put it here
so capacity avalabilty check for manpower i can do
this is what i know
if iam wrong please correct me and also give some idea how to use this field
thank you1. In Capacity tab page, use
Other Formula - SAP008 (Proj: Reqtmns in Prcng). This relates to the internal Calculation of Available Capacity by system.
2. Overload - in Percentage
eg) Available Capacity of the Work Center is 100 mhrs. If you set Overload as 10%, the work center can be loaded with 110 mhrs. That means, in Maintenance Order the Work Center can be loaded 110 mhrs per day. If the Capacity requirement Crosses 110 mhrs, sysytem will throw message according to the IMG setting.
3. If we set the Indicator Relevant to finite scheduling,
we will have the flexibility to continue with MO processing even though the Work Center is Over loaded (If you have this option, during the pop up meesage by system at the time of overloading, we can manually adjust the Capacity and proceed with the process)
4. Can be used by several Operations -
Capacity of Work Center id 100 mhrs. Capacity requirement for One Operation in an Order is 50 mhrs. In this case, if you have not selected the "Can be used " option, remaining 50mhrs can not be utilized for the whole day by any other Operation. So it ie advisable to enable this option, so that maximum utilzation can be done.
5. Long Term Planning -
As the name indicates, it is basically to plan the Capacity Requirements/assignments in long term.
eg) Planning of Spares, Man power in a Maintenance Plan
Hope this will solve ur clarification.

Harddrive slowly filling up?
When traveling and commuting from work to home I usually leave my MBP on, and just close the lid, putting it to sleep.
It has probably been on continuously for the past few weeks.
I noticed the harddrive capacity had dropped considerably but have not done any major file moves or downloads. Then, yesterday my MBP rebooted unexpectedly and looking at the capacity of the drive, I've seen it went up.
Was the capacity being reduced due to caching? We are talking gigs of used space. Both caches and logs will affect disk space. However, logs are the only thing you can safely remove. Two free software titles, Anacron and Macjanitor let you have control over logs on your own schedule. I would not attempt to empty cache files unless you are troubleshooting something which definitely can be caused by it, and you are backed up.

Should I have Copies in 3 Folders - Data, Original & Modified?
I have a Powerbook G4 that is running out of Hard Disk space & I am looking for opportunities to find some space. I have not touched ANY of the files in the iPhotot Library, as I know that is a no-no, but it looks like I have copies of all pictures in 2 files: Original & Data. & then, for pictures I have modified, there are also copies of those in Modified. I understand the Original & Modified folders. But what about the Data folder? Should it be there? Do I need it?
I do have a back-up hard drive with copies of everything, but I still need to access my photos when I am not in the office, so simply moving them all to my back-up isn't a great option. I'm also wondering if I delete some photos from my Laptop after I back them up, when I do my next back-up will the photos I deleted from my laptop also be deleted off of my back-up copy?
Any thoughts or advice would be helpful.....I will get a new Mac Laptop in the Spring, but just trying to stretch my harddrive capacity a bit longer....
Thank You!!!
Powerbook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.8)Yes, everything is correct. The "Data" folder contains thumbnails rather than full-sized files.
First, back up by dragging (copying) the library folder AS AN ENTITY to the backup location. Do NOT attempt to back up portions.
Second, do all your deletions by accessing the library from INSIDE iPhoto. The backup will not be impacted.
Third, you might want to break your library into several DVD-sized libraries (this might take some educated guesses). I did it by duplicating my library several times and then carefully deleting appropriate photos from each one. Back them all up the normal way and also burn each one onto DVD and carry a pack of DVDs with you when you travel. With multiple libraries, you need to change the name of each library folder to something that makes sense to you (that's the ONE safe change that you can make to the library). iPhoto will always remember the most recent library that it accessed. Whenever you wish to change to a different library, hold down the Option/Alt key while starting iPhoto and follow directions. -
Running Mac OS X on a G3 PB?
My brother had told me that the G3 lappys will run Mac OS but poorly. I don't want to trash my lappy or have another comp that just runs slowly so I didn't consider this as an option.
I come here and lots of peeps are running OS X on the G3 PB it seems.
If this is possible, I might put off buying a new comp further due to lack of any imediate needs besides wanting to sell of my old stuff which needs to be cleared out of my parents' garage and advertise my planned craft fair table*.
I have sort of a chicken and egg situation:
Selling online is planned to be my main source of income, but I need a better system to sell online because the camera won't run without OS X and I can't sell without a working cam.
* For the curious I am starting up a project to sell hand made mini bags for computer stuff. I am planning to both sell online and hold a craft fair table as soon as I have enough made.
Obviously this is a risky venture so I am not counting on it as income yet but as potential income.Liz, your Pismo will need a lot of upgrading, and you'll be looking at 300-400 dollars total cost; about half the price of a new iBook G4, which beats the pismo in almost every way imaginable, save for the great feeling and the fact that you love this specific computer. After all, the code name "Pismo" is assigned to the case, not the internal components.
If you don't get the power thing working, there's of coure no reason to waste money on the machine, sorry to say, but let's face it.
If you do manage to get it working, which I assume you will eventually, I'd say it's worth the money, taken you absolutely want to keep this machine. It shall be clear that no matter what you do to you Pismo, it will never be as fast as a new iBook. Period.
Now for the good part of it.
What you should be focusing on first, that is if you don't want to go all the way right now, but rather work your way through some sort of upgrade process, swapping one part at a time during an extended period of time, is the harddrive. The most alarming need is the lack of harddrive capacity. Let's make that priority #1.
1. New harddrive
The original drives were small (as you know), and slow. That is, 4200 rpm and 2 MB of cache doesn't make any note book happy. What you need is a 5400 or 7200 rpm drive (7200 rpm just might be slightly overkill, I'm not sure), and settle for nothing less than 40 GB. Such a drive you'll find anywhere for less than 70 dollars, I would say. I bought mine, two years ago, for 125. Today you'll get like 80 Gigs for that, even 100.
Another thing about new drives are that they are almost perfectly silent. Mine is specified to make 25 dB of noise, but I can't hear it! As you know, the original drives are noisy.
2. RAM
Next, you should look at the memory. 320 is OK for OS X, but if you run several apps at the same time, you'll run out of RAM even before they're open. Bottom line is, you'll never get enough RAM. Just get as much as you can afford. I've got 768 MB, but I'll be upgrading to 1 Gig soon, I believe.
Note: I bought my Pismo with 320 Megs installed, and when I upgraded to 768 (adding a 512, swapping out a 64 MB), it was a huge speed increase!!
Also, make sure to get your hands on Tiger, because it IS a lot faster than you Jagwire. At least, there was a noticable speed increase between Jaguar and Panther, so make sure you'll be running at least 10.3. Of course, I don't regret getting Tiger...
3. Processor
A new drive and more RAM will make you Pismo noticably faster, and more useful. Perhaps some 20 percents. Which is good, but why stop there??
What's going to speed bump your computer, really, is a new processor. That's the key to the Super Pismo.
Of course, with upgraded RAM and harddrive, the weak link is the CPU.
Installing the G4 processor was, by my measures, fairly easy. Even though the supplier forgot to include the instrucions, I was able to figure out how to do it. I have lots of rudimentary experience of tinkering with computer hardware, but I've never like soldered stuff...
Luckily, that's not requires for the upgrade. All you need to do is removing the CPU module, which is about as tricky as swapping RAM. Then remove the heat sink from the CPU core, there are two screws for that, and reassemble the new processor board. You'll need to apply some thermal compound (supplied with the upgrade) between the CPU and the heat sink. This is where you need to make sure you do it right, or the processor will overheat. But don't worry, as long as you apply thermal compound enough it will keep cool.
It took me 15 minutes to perform this, and then I struggled at least half the time with getting a plastic frame off the CPU chip. The trick is to push it "upwards" (towards where the back of the computer would have been) and then tilt it. It will then come of.
Alright, apperantly the post became too long, see below... -
Questions - Canon HV30/HV20 users
After reading several reviews I’m thinking of purchasing a Canon HV30 camcorder to do some HD recording. Yet I am proceeding with caution - HD files are huge and I’m wondering in a generally way how my - intel 24” 2.15 GHz - RAM at 3gig iMac will perform? Will it perform real time video captures etc. with this tape based camera? I am a patient sort of person and don’t mind waiting for things to process but is it even reasonable to use this setup for HD.
2nd Question --
– I use iMovie 6 and Final Cut Express 3.5. I have several large capacity FW 800 external drives connected to the iMac I would like to use with this camcorder.
However there's always unexpected things like I have read the Canon HV30 uses FW400 port and does not like any other FW devices connected when capturing video to the computer – So does that include the FW800 port as well?
Perhaps a few of you have some experience with the HV30 or HV20 - I’d like to hear your thoughts on what to expect - would it be a good choice. What are your brags and nags about your HV30?
I know that's subjective but I'm looking for good video quality - ease of editing and having the ability to save the edited movie back to tape. Latter when bluray media and burners get more reasonable I may burn the edited movies to disk.
Thanks for any thoughts,
Steve

Sorry your having problems - If you live near an Apple store or a friend that has latter hardware/software on their Mac try the HV30 at least you wold know if somethings wrong with the cameras FW port or not. Perhaps you can get the camera exchanged. I have head from quite a number of folks their HV30 work fine with Macs, iMovie an FCE.
I went ahead and purchased the HV30 it should arrive early this coming week -
One thing - As I mentioned before in other posts to this board I do have a Canon gl2 and it is very touchy about any other FW devices connected most times the computer will not even recognize the camera. Try the HV30 as the only device on the FW port. I'm using iMovie 6.0.4 and FCE 3.5 I'll post how things go - you have got me a little worried though.
My 2 cents - best wishes,
Steve

Can I use a Time Capsule for multiple computers?
Hello,
after reading various posts on this forum I am now more more confused than ever : bear in mind that my understanding of computing stuff is quite ... limited, so I apologize if this question seems senseless.
I have several small capacity external hard drives which I uses for back ups and moving files between my computers (1 desktop (2.16 GHw Intel Core 2 Duo: Mac OSX 10.6.5), 2 laptops) but the result is a ton of confusion and multiple files everywhere. I was therefore thinking of getting a Time Capsule 2T which I would use as :
- a unique external back up machine for all my computers (without adding any other external drives)
- a wifi modem-router
Before investing that much money, can anyone tell me if the Time Capsule is indeed appropriate for the above uses, particularly being able to program all 3 machines to wirelessly back themselves up on the scheduled basis.
When I started seeing questions about adding USB driven external hardrives It made me wonder if i had gotten the purpose of the TC all wrong.
Thank you for your patience!:=)nicaru wrote:

Yes, that's exactly what it was designed for.
You can put other data on a Time Capsule, besides backups, but that will cause some conflicts, sooner or later. See #Q3 in [Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule|http://web.me.com/pondini/TimeMachine/TimeCapsule.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
When I started seeing questions about adding USB driven external hardrives It made me wonder if i had gotten the purpose of the TC all wrong.
You can do that as well.
One purpose is, if the TC isn't large enough to back up all your Macs, you can back some up to the TC's internal HD, others to the USB drive. It varies widely depending on how you use your Mac, but a "rule of thumb" is, TM needs 2-3 times the space of the data it's backing-up, to be able to keep a reasonable "depth" of old backups for you.
Another is, if you want other data available over the network, you can put it on the USB drive to avoid the hassles in #Q3. And, since you can partition the USB drive (unlike the internal), you could use one partition for backups, another for other data.
|
There is an alternative, however, that you might find more attractive (and less expensive), since you do have a desktop Mac, and I assume you already have a wireless router.
That's to connect one or more external HDs directly to the desktop Mac, and back it up directly to that drive (or a dedicated partition on it).
Then back up the laptops over your network to a different partition on the same drive, or a different drive, via sharing. See #22 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).
For moving files around, you could continue to use a small external HD, or use sharing over your network. -
Photoshop crashing when trying to open CS4 files in CS5...
I am having trouble opening most of my Photosshop CS4 files in CS5. CS5 is up to date and all the files that I am having trouble with are saved out with max compatibility turned on / checked.
The files are ads and they have text, vectors, background images... You name it some of them have it. But some files are simple files with only a few layers and others are large and complex. They open fine in CS4 with no issues what so ever. But every time I try to open them in 5 PS crashes.
The machine CS5 is running on is a brand new iMac with an up to date OS as well. Below are my system & software specs. Any help would be so greatly appreciated.
iMac OS 10.6.4
Processor: 2.8 GHz Intel Core i5
Memory: 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Harddrive:
Capacity: 999.86 GB (999,860,912,128 bytes)
Available: 615.09 GB (615,090,704,384 bytes)
Graphics card:
ATI Radeon HD 5750
VRAM (Total): 1024 MB
Display: 2560 x 1440
Pixel Depth: 32-Bit ColorOkay, so I thought I had it figured out (the font compatibility suggestion)...
I opened all three files, stripped them down to only what I needed. Reset all fonts to one common font that does work fine on both machines. I cannot even remember what all I did to try and make this work now. But anything that could be reset or similar without loosing the ability to make changes to and update the files I did.
So, I bring all three files over to the CS5 machine and one file opens, I was able to save it out with a new file name, move a few things around - Good deal. The other two files crashed PS just as before. Then I go back to open the previously stated file and it crashes now. This is driving me insane. I have WAY to many files that were created in CS4 to have to go to a ton of trouble in order to use them in CS5. I should have purchased CS4 instead of the latest and greatest, but Nooooo. I had to go ahead and get CS5.
So, Chris mentioned the crash logs, I will inser them below (I guess this is what I am supposed to do?). The one log titled "file 3 TLYM O" is the one that I thought was fixed for I copuld open it, save it out with a new file name and close it successfully - then it will not open again without crashing PS.
I sure hope this information helps. I have got to find out what the problem is so I can open all my older CS4 files I need (which there are plenty of them).

Before i install i would like a couplle of questions answered
first off, i am glad to be a part of this forum, i signed up and hope i can learn a couple of things about linux here
i have a couple of questions about linux in general before install
1) i have an old laptop with windows 7 currently installed, can i install archlinux on my harddrive without removing windows. i want to be able to dual boot. and how much space does the install take? the harddrive capacity is 40gb
2) how is the wireless support? i forget the exact model # of my network card, but it was a really common one, my has the centrino group of components and i recall having installed ubuntu and it required wayyyy too much work to figure out how to install the wireless driver and i ended up giving up. i need to have wireless access on linux, i hope 4 years later now there will be drivers for it
3) i need to rip dvd's to iso files occasionally, what is a good program for that? i used dvd shrink in windows
4) would i be able to transfer files over network to my windows 7 PCs?
5) would i be able to transfer files between the two OS's on my harddrive?
thx

The ideal space for Archlinux should be around 10-15 gigabytes.
2) how is the wireless support? i forget the exact model # of my network card, but it was a really common one, my has the centrino group of components and i recall having installed ubuntu and it required wayyyy too much work to figure out how to install the wireless driver and i ended up giving up. i need to have wireless access on linux, i hope 4 years later now there will be drivers for it
Wireless support is good as the kernel support. Note that if you weren't experienced enough to make ubuntu work, it is highly probable that you won't be able to make archlinux work.
4) would i be able to transfer files over network to my windows 7 PCs?
Yes, samba is the way.
5) would i be able to transfer files between the two OS's on my harddrive?
Yes, seamlessly.
