Severe Screen Artefacts post Mountain Lion Upgrade

I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion direct from Snow Leopard.  Ever since I have been getting weird vertical lines drwn on my iMac screen.
They don't appear all the time.  They appear in windows when I move the window around the screen. They sometimes appear on the desktop behind the window - but not always.  They appear in in Safari windows too.  If I scroll up and down the line stay in the same releative position. That is, I can't lose them by scrolling them off screen.  They are still there in the same shape and position when I scroll back down again.
They don't seem to affect Google Chrome.  They plague Safari and Firefox.  I have a demo version of iDefrag.  The iDefrag data window has vertical lines at random where none should be present.
Here are some screen shots -

This happens irrespective of what User Account I am logged in to.

Hi Paul.
I did all that and I'm pleased to announce that it appears to have worked!!  It's only been half an hour or so since the restart so I'm still cautious but I now get that Triangle in Numbers that I mentioned earlier.
The screen artifacts appear to have gone now.  But I will remain sceptical about this until I haven't seen them for at least a week. Well - another couple of hours maybe.  LOL!
What appears to have happened this time is that the download was one **** of a bit faster than the first time. My ISP recently upgraded me from 20gbits/s to 60gb/s download.  The ML downloader showed 1 hour 36 mins to do the jobs but actually took only about 40 mins.  The installer took a further 40 mins.
This time, when ML started up, it automatically located and downloaded n a new version of Java (name ended with 2013 or something).  I think it was this that has fixed the screen glitches.
The reinstalled version of ML is 10.8.3.  It was 10.8.2 before.  Okay, so it's a recent update but I wonder why 'Software Update' didn't inform me about this?  Just a coincidence that it is released just as I needed it maybe?
Anyway, I'm off now to see if GarageBand works again in all the accounts on my iMac rather than only the administrator account; and to see if edge detection when preview scanning is now available again in Preview and Image Capture when using my HP C7280 A-I-O printer/scanner.  Oh, and also to see if Dictation now works. It didn't before.
Bugger! I've just typed this and possibly I needn't have done!  Oh well - here goes nothing.....
Thanks for the tips, Paul.  Your good health, Sir!

  • SSD users problems post Mountain Lion upgrade?

HI folks.  I've had nothing but major problems with installing and booting since I upgraded my Mac to Mountain Lion.  I had no problems with Lion.  I do have an SSD installed and I'm wondering if that has something to do with it.  Anyone?  Thanks.

    Hello All...
I just wanted to give you my expeience with my SSD.  Im hoping this helps someone out there.
    I have a macbookpro5,4 - mid 2009 2.53 GHZ 15" macbook pro running lion.  I purchased a 512 SSD from crucial and 2 x 4 GB ram modules.
I installed both and all worked great (I used a time machine backup to restore the SSD), up to the point where I put the computer to sleep either by closing the lid, via the power button, or via the apple menu.  When I tried to log in  from sleep it would give me the beach ball and it wouldnt go away.
    So heres what I did:
    1. I put my old hard drive in and everything worked fine but not as fast as ssd
    2. I put the SSD back in and the sleep issue came back
    3. Upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion (issue still there)
    4. I downgraded the firmware to 1.6 (issue still came back)
    5. Upgraded firmware back to 1.7 (issue still there)
    6. Disabled "put hard drive to sleep when possible)  (System Preferences -> Energy Saver) - (issue still there - though i kept this disabled)
    7. Disabled "allow bluetooth to wake up this computer" (System Preferences -> Energy Saver -> Advanced) - (issue still there) - I renabled it after
    8. Saw a post to replace the hard drive cable bracket Apple part: 922-9314 (i purchased on ebay)
    9. Found a program called insominaX - enables you to prevent your computer from going to sleep by closing the lid.  THIS WORKED for me as a bypass solution but not as a real solution as the computer is still on when i travelled from one location to the next.
I emailed crucial and now i was contemplating wiping out the hard drive and starting from scratch and reinstalling everything.
And the final solution (for me anyways):
    10. I Reset the SMC - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964.  And everything worked.
I went back to disable the insomniaX and everything still worked.  I did a sleep via apple, closing lid, and power button.  And still all good.
    11. I requested a refund for the hard drive cable bracket.  And the seller just refunded for me.
Best of luck to everyone out there...I hope you dont have to spend as much time as myself to solve this issue.

  • Screen Pixelation after Mountain Lion upgrade

I upgraded to Mountain Lion on my Mac Pro recently.  For the first week or so it worked great, but a few days ago I woke the computer from screen saver and the screen was covered with these random pixels all over.  Here is a link to a screen shot I took.
    http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/515/screenshot20120814at332.png/
The pixels don't stay in the same place they constantly move like ants.  Also, they seem to only be effecting the mac os whenever I take a video or photo into full screen the pixelation goes away, but returns immediately after exiting full screen.  Also, it doesn't seem to be distorting the dock at all.
I haven't changed any display settings since the upgrade leading me to believe the only answer is with mountain lion itself.  Obviously thios is quite irritating trying to work with all this noise on the screen.
Has anyone else had this problem?
ANyone have a solution?  so far there have been no bug fixes from apple.
FYI:  I have a Mac Pro quad, running to two dell monitors.

same here... just for curiosity, have you used the Preview version of Mountain Lion? i have 2 mbp 13" with identical hardware, one with pixelated screen, and the other normal. i've installed the ML Preview in just the troubled one...

  • Mac Restarting after Mountain Lion Upgrade

My mac keeps rebooting itself saying "your computer was restarted because of a problem"
It's only started happening after mountain lion upgrade, someone please help
This is my first post in this forum btw

    Try reinstalling Mountain Lion:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Full screen mode in Mountain Lion

    Hello everybody!
I am experiencing certain problems with full screen mode in mountain lion 10.8.2 freshly installed (not upgraded over Lion or ML 10.8.x) on Macbook Pro 13 mid 2010 model. Whenever i open an application which supports full screen mode, it opens on my desktop so I have to enter into full screen mode. When I quit the application and reopen it, it again opens on my desktop then I have to again enter into full screen mode. What I want is that all apps open in full screen mode if they support like, calendar, mail, safari, notes, reeder, itunes, app store and so on.
What could be the problem that is preventing my apps to start automatically in full screen mode?
I would appreciate any kind of help from anyone of you.
    Thanks.

Go to System Preferences > General and untick Close windows when quitting an application

  • Downloading Mountain Lion upgrade from App Store failed

I'm upgrading my wife's iMac from Snow Leopard 10.6.8 to Mountain Lion. Just tried to download the Mountain Lion upgrade from the App Store. I paid for it, clicked on the download, the little icon did it's fancy leap down to the application bar at the bottom of the page, and the item in the app store said it was downloading as well as the white bar beneath the icon in the app bar at the bottom of the screen. Nothing happened. I left the computer and came back about ten minutes later. The app store had crashed. Rebooted it. Tried the download process again. Same result.
I paid about $20 for the system software upgrade so I would like, if possible, to use the app store item if I can. Is there a solution without a trip to the Apple Store to buy the system upgrade?
    John Kendrick

Quit the App Store if it's open.
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar top of your screen click Go > Go to Folder
Type this exactly as you see it here:
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
    Click Go
Move the NetworkInterfaces.plist file from the SystemConfiguration folder to the Trash.
Relaunch the App Store and try downloading Mountain Lion.

  • Can't login after Mountain Lion upgrade (Network accounts are unavailable)

I performed a Mountain Lion upgrade on a 2011 MBP running Lion this weekend. The Mac may have been set up to connect to an AD server with my user account, but I thought I had disabled that months ago... aparently not. I performed the upgrade at home not on the corporate network.
On first bootup after the Mountain Lion upgrade I'm stuck at the login screen unable to login with my local account or the admin account. I get the "red dot" next to the username field with the "Network accounts are unavailable" pop up. I'm plugged in to the ethernet network at work now... no luck.
I tried booting into the repair disk and repairing disk permissions. Still no luck.
Any ideas? I'd happily do a fresh install but I need to get a handful of files off the machine first.

No worries with the basic questions... it's important to cover all the bases. Thanks so much for the input.
    - I'm trying to log in with the same username I would use to ssh in... so yes.
    - I don't know if the account was a mobile account. The Mac was given to me configured about a year ago, configured to be on the domain. I since have used it on and off many networks without considering it was set up to be on a domain.
    - Never had a problem logging into the machine before the mountain lion install, although to be honest it was very very rarely ever rebooted.
    - I've plugged it into ethernet and let it sit for quite some time. It's still telling me Network accounts are unavailable and I'm unable to login with my personal or admin account.

  • IMac freezing after Mountain Lion Upgrade

After upgrading my iMac to Mountain Lion it is freezing at least one a day. Sometimes the screen get messed up right before getting frozen, something like this video (from another guy), but they move from top to bottom to me.
I never had this problem before, it started right after the Mountain Lion upgrade.
Anyone with the same problem? Any ideas?

    Permissions Repair:
Go to applications then to the "other" folder then go to disk utility, on the left hand side you will see a white box.  Select the second option, usually called "mac HD" with that selected click on "repair permissions" in the center towards the bottom of the screen.  Wait for it to complete, then see if this fixes the issue.
    PRAM Reset:
1- Ensure the machine is powered off.
2- Locate the following keys on your keyboard in preparation for Step 4:
    ‘command’ – ‘option’ – ‘P’ – ‘R’
3- Press the ‘power on’ button.
4- Immediately – and before the grey screen appears – hold down ‘command-option-P-R’ all together.
5- Keep them held down until you’ve heard the start-up chime twice. After you release them you should hear it again, and hopefully your Mac will boot up normally

  • ATV2 Home Sharing Drops Since Mountain Lion Upgrade

I've found some stuff close to my issue, but really nothing addressing my issue.  I have 3 Apple TV 2's.  When running my 27" Mac on Lion, everything streamed wonderfully.  I have a BIG router capable of handling movie streaming, so the network should NOT be the problem.  After installing Mountain Lion, all three of my Apple TV's have been getting dropped from Home Sharing during the middle of a media stream.  It happens with regularity with music and movies.  Even Netfilx streams drop because Home Sharing drops out.  The only way to fix it thus far is to disconnect and re-connect Home Sharing at the 27" Mac, where the streams originate.  I'm certain this problem is due to the Mountain Lion upgrade.  Is there a fix or do I need to wait for Apple to push something out to us?

For anyone else having the "white screen" issue with youtube, and/or yahoo issue. I seemed to have repaired the issue. I turned the parental controls off for both of my kids accounts, restarted my Mac, and the problem vanished.
I also turned the parental controls back on after this, restarted the computer, and the problem came back.
*** This is 100% a Parental Control/Mountain Lion glitch. Hopefully Apple knows and is working on a solution. The sooner they fix it, the sooner I can turn the parental controls back onto my kids accounts.

  • HT202159 Mountain Lion upgrade download stopped, now it states in purchased apps that 'an error has occured' and resume button is blank & will not work

Mountain Lion upgrade download stopped, now it states in purchased apps that 'an error has occured' and resume button is blank & will not work. Tried to re download, but it states code has already been used

    Danielle...
From the App Store menu bar top of your screen click Store > Check for Unfinished Downloads
If that doesn't help, disable anti virus software and turn off the Firewall in System Preferences > Security & Privacy.
Keep in mind, for downloading Mountain Lion from the App Store, a high speed (broadband) internet connection is strongly recommended by Apple as noted here > iTUNES STORE - MAC APP STORE - TERMS AND CONDITIONS
If you need to reinstall OS X or repair the the startup disk using Mountain Lion Recovery, that requires broadband (high speed internet) access to the internet via Wi-Fi or an Ethernet connection. OS X is downloaded over the internet form Apple when OS X Recovery is used for reinstallation.

  • Cannot download Mountain Lion upgrade

I have a Late 2009 MacBook running 10.7.5 OS, using 4Mbps wifi. Went to apple.com > Mountain Lion > upgrade, which took me to App store. I clicked on the download button, clicked Buy, signed into my Apple account, clicked on Download,, and ... nothing. Tried again. Nothing. Waited. Waited, etc. Emptied cache. Tried again. Emptied cache, disabled cache, closed out all windows, shut down computer. Restarted. Went right to apple.com and app store. Same results. Click Download button...nothing.
Went to Finder > went to "~/Library/Caches/ ",  closed out of everything, shut down, had coffee, turned back on, same as before - straight to app store with no ability to download.
    Now what?

I found a similar problem listed after iI posted this which suggested that I go to the App sotre to check the status of my purchases - I find the Mountain Lion purchase, it says "paused" so I click "resume", waited a minute or two and it began downloading.

  • Why is mountain lion upgrade not dowloading?

I have tried several times to down the mountain lion upgrade and I keep getting a prompt that shows "unable to download at this time."  What am I doing wrong?

    Hi Shasha,
    Which upgrade exactly is it?

  • Apple makes you WORK HARD for your Mountain Lion upgrade

Mountain Lion was launched on 25th July. I bought a new Macbook Air on 11th July, with the promised upgrade. I did not realise that Apple was going to make me work so hard to get the upgrade, which I still don't have up till now. Lesson learnt - next time, I should wait till the launch of a new OS to get the new OS rather than wait for an upgrade.
The waiting time would mean I'll get a new computer with the OS installed at the same time as I would have if I had ordered it on 25th July, without the work.
My note to Apple feedback below posted for everyone's benefit, seeing that Apple states they don't respond to the feedback they receive.
---- Note to Apple feedback ---
I had to use my Apple ID to create an account and order a new MacBook Air, which I did on 11th July. I received the item and waited for the Mountain Lion upgrade which is promised as free.
I did not realise that Apple was going to make me work to get the upgrade. It would have been easier to just wait for the upgrade before buying your product.
Why is it necessary to go through such a convulated application process to get the mountain lion upgrade?
Why is Apple asking for information such as what I ordered (which qualifies for the upgrade), if it is in my Apple ID account and you already knew that 10.8 would be available on 25th July?
Why do I need to re-submit my hardcopy order chit (which by the way, was disposed upon receipt of the Macbook)and other documentation to prove my purchase?
This has inconveinced me greatly as I had to find a scanner to scan the document for submission.
This seems a rather antiquated and bureaucractic process for a company which is supposed to be on the technological edge, and which is delivering the OS to me using MY DATA PLAN and not providing me any hardcopies to justify the additional work required on my part.
So far, I have wasted 1 hour to make the claim ... and now I am told I have to wait at least 72hours to get the key, at which point it will probably take me another few hours to install the OS.
Which also means that I will also be receiving the new OSX at least 5 days after its launch - as late as it would have been if I had just waited till 25th July to order the mac.
    Kindly review your processes.

I decided to make a second application last night with the invoice printed from the online store just in-case the first set was rejected.
Well, this morning - both claims came back rejected. The first one on the basis the scan was not clear (huh ?) ... and the second because my mid-2012 (july) Macbook 13" air does not qualify for the upgrade. huh ??
I called the help line and they are as puzzled ... so they said they will escalate it. From what they can see in the system, it should have gone through. Given its now the weekend, it will be another 3 days of delay at the least.
It's almost as if they have created mounds of bureaucracy for nothing, to make their customers jump through hoops.
I really should have stuck to ordering it with 10.8 installed... it was just waiting another week. Big regret.
Now I am stuck in an endless array of form submissions, online forms, talking to Apple support ... waiting ... waiting ... waiting. ..
