Severe screen fragmentation

Hi everyone,
I'm working on a 2.26GHz MacPro with 12GBs of RAM.  Notable installed software includes Adobe Master Collection and Final Cut Pro.
I have 3 (standard) Nvidia GeForce GT 120 graphics cards.  I also have three 27" cinema displays, one for each graphics card.
I'm running OSX 10.6.8 (snow leopard).
I am a video editor/graphic artist and spend a minimum of 8 hours on my computer a day.  More often than not, the computer works as a render engine overnight while I am away.  I have a tendancy to stream video while I'm working (on something that doesn't require my ears).  I manage to do a complete shut down about once a week.
About 8 months ago, while working and streaming video, the centre display went completely haywire.  Click the link to see a screen cap.
http://s1084.photobucket.com/albums/j413/apeszat/Mac%20problem/?action=view&curr ent=MACissue.jpg
Basically, the screen will (very suddenly) fragment and those fragments will get worse and move around if you try to move the mouse.  If you click and drag something from the affected screen onto one of the other screens, the problem will stay behind.  If you drag it back to the affected screen the problem will reappear.  The only way to stop the fragmentation and return the display to normal is to do an entire reboot of the system.  Nothing else will get rid of the fragmentation.  At this point I thought it was a graphics card issue since only the one screen was being affected.  A few weeks after this first issue, the problem starting happening on 2 out of 3 of the screens.  I had two certified Apple engineers come in to try and fix the problem.  Neither one could find any issues with the machine whatsoever.  All the hardware was tested.  All the software was tested and updated.  PRAM was flushed several times.  Nothing worked.  They both said they thought it was the display itself causing the issue since the issue didn't appear to travel between displays.  In fact, one of the engineers called Apple and Apple didn't not know what the problem was but confirmed that his theory was most likely accurate.
So two weeks ago I disconnected both of the displays that are causing issues.  I replaced one of the displays with a brand new one I had lying around (simply can't work with only one screen).  For a full week everything was fine.  The issue didn't come back.  So I had thought that the issue had been isolated and resolved.
Until a few days ago.  Quite suddenly, my left-hand display fragmented one day while editing.  I did a reboot and it happened again within a few hours.  It has happened at least once a day on that screen ever since.  This morning the problem appeared on my right-hand screen (the brand new one I just plugged in).  Oddly enough, the issue has never happened on two screens simultaneously.
Sometimes trying to tile the active applications will force the screen to behave, but most often it doesn't.  On a bad day, if I try to tile my apps, the screen experiencing the issue will simply not respond to the command.  The other windows will but everything on the affected screen does not tile.
I don't know what else to do or check.  I told the engineers that my feeling was that it might the logic board.  They adamantly told me that the logic board could not be causing these problems.  Nor the graphics cards.  Their rationale was that if it was a hardware issue it would appear all the time, not periodically.
The best they could come up with, besides the problem being the actual display, was that I'm getting electrical interference from a large HP plotter that I sit next to.
Has anyone else experienced a problem like this one?
I'd like to avoid just straight up buying another machine, but I'm at a complete loss.
Thanks!

I've run countless tests on the RAM itself.
That is not necessary on a Mac Pro tower, because it uses Error Correcting Code (ECC) memory, unless you have deliberately defeated that excellent feature by installing non-ECC RAM. The RAM stores syndrome bits (coded check bits) that can be used to detect and correct ALL single-bit errors on the fly. Double-bit Errors are detected and are intended to cause a kernel panic.
As long as ECC shows as enabled, and all memory shows as present at its expected size, and status of each module is OK, they are fine. Do not spend any more time looking at main RAM memory in your Mac Pro tower.
RE: your screenshot.
This shows no hardware failures likely to be detected by a diagnostic. The kinds of issues shown in your screenshot could be caused by software, but that is unlikely.
Debugging in general:
You have been through the easy solutions. Now you should substitute additional KNOWN GOOD items for potential problem items, BUT: you need to be very, very methodical, and only change one thing at a time.
For example, have you swapped display cards with each other? Have you tried a new card? Does the problem follow the card? The slot it is in? The display attached? The cables?

You can still do it with CONTROL + Arrow keys, the same as 10.6

  • Severe screen flickering in Warcraft 3

I installed it, renamed the movies folder as well. However, when I run the game, I get severe screen flickering, to the extent that the game menu is visible once every 4-5 seconds. Any thoughts on how to solve this?
Since I cannot use the menu because of the flickering, I have to kill the game from terminal. However, upon exiting, my desktop's resolution and colours change, till I reboot. I tried running the game under a desktop emulation in wine, but that doesn't seem to help either. The emulated desktop doesn't flicker, but the game does.

Aside from the potential SLI issue, you might want to study your Logitech mouse driver.
Going back a bit, several versions of the MS InteliPoint mouse driver caused just what you describe. I have not heard of this with Logitech, but did have some other issues with their SetPoint drivers. In my case, I ditched their keyboard, but kept the mouse (love it), and did away with SetPoint, using the generic driver. All functions that I needed were handled, and SetPoint was out of the equation.
Something else to look at, and good luck,

  • Residual screen fragments on iMac

I have a 5 years old iMac on Snow Leopard which has been running fine except for increasing frequency of residual screen fragments. The only fix seems to be starts, but the problem is getting worse. I moved over from PCs a couple of years ago and didn't think I would have to get into Terminal and other system tinkering. Nor do I want to get into that. Has the screen fragments issue been fixed? And if so, whats the answer, as I can't seem to find an answer.

Please bookmark and use Keyboard Shortcuts, you will find that answer and many more keyboard shortcuts you can use.

  • Mac mini freezes and then screen fragments

Our Mac Mini freezes up constantly. Some days it happens after a few minutes of running and other times after a few hors. After the computer freezes, the screen fragments. We seem to have enough memory and so not certain what the problem could be.

    Hi AKS,
Maybe you have got a temperature problem affected Mac Mini as our Mac Mini Server. You can read about it here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/13242219#13242219
Such problems sometimes gets worse by time so I suggest you should run the EFI test and then contact Apple service before running out of guarantee.
    Good luck!

  • Severe Screen Artefacts post Mountain Lion Upgrade

I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion direct from Snow Leopard.  Ever since I have been getting weird vertical lines drwn on my iMac screen.
They don't appear all the time.  They appear in windows when I move the window around the screen. They sometimes appear on the desktop behind the window - but not always.  They appear in in Safari windows too.  If I scroll up and down the line stay in the same releative position. That is, I can't lose them by scrolling them off screen.  They are still there in the same shape and position when I scroll back down again.
They don't seem to affect Google Chrome.  They plague Safari and Firefox.  I have a demo version of iDefrag.  The iDefrag data window has vertical lines at random where none should be present.
Here are some screen shots -

This happens irrespective of what User Account I am logged in to.

    Hi Paul.
I did all that and I'm pleased to announce that it appears to have worked!!  It's only been half an hour or so since the restart so I'm still cautious but I now get that Triangle in Numbers that I mentioned earlier.
The screen artifacts appear to have gone now.  But I will remain sceptical about this until I haven't seen them for at least a week. Well - another couple of hours maybe.  LOL!
What appears to have happened this time is that the download was one **** of a bit faster than the first time. My ISP recently upgraded me from 20gbits/s to 60gb/s download.  The ML downloader showed 1 hour 36 mins to do the jobs but actually took only about 40 mins.  The installer took a further 40 mins.
This time, when ML started up, it automatically located and downloaded n a new version of Java (name ended with 2013 or something).  I think it was this that has fixed the screen glitches.
The reinstalled version of ML is 10.8.3.  It was 10.8.2 before.  Okay, so it's a recent update but I wonder why 'Software Update' didn't inform me about this?  Just a coincidence that it is released just as I needed it maybe?
Anyway, I'm off now to see if GarageBand works again in all the accounts on my iMac rather than only the administrator account; and to see if edge detection when preview scanning is now available again in Preview and Image Capture when using my HP C7280 A-I-O printer/scanner.  Oh, and also to see if Dictation now works. It didn't before.
Bugger! I've just typed this and possibly I needn't have done!  Oh well - here goes nothing.....
Thanks for the tips, Paul.  Your good health, Sir!

  • Severe screen damage on a 30" ACD

    A very sad day indeed:
Last night a framed picture fell off the wall and hit the screen of my 30" ACD in 2 parts leaving profound scratches in both places. One is so deep that background light leaks awfully through it, the other doesn't present light leakage but is quite deep as well.
Here are 2 crappy cell phone pics of the bleeding scratch (taken with the LCD showing a pure black image): http://homepage.mac.com/luisbustamante/LCDscratch.jpg
My question is if there's something to be done? Can Apple fix this? If so, will it be so expensive that I'll be better off buying a new display? Any other suggestions?
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks for your help.
dual 1.8 Ghz Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

This is one of those things that home contents insurance is for. It will cost you a lot to get it repaired, if Apple will even offer this service. You might want to just eat the cost and buy a new one.
To repair yourself, you will need a new LCD panel. You're looking for the LG-Philips LM300WQ1, but I don't like your chances of finding just one of them. I suspect there's only about 4 companies that buy them from the manufacturer.

  • Premiere Elements 13, Wacom Bamboo tablet input not working on several screen elements

I installed both Photoshop Elements 13 as well as Premiere Elements 13.
Now I notice that in Photoshop Elements 13 (and ALL other programs on my pc) my tablet/pen input via a Wacom Bamboo tablet works perfect, but not in Premiere Elements 13.
Some screen elements in Premiere E.13 do not allow to be 'clicked' by the pen.
If I hover over it and then 'click' it with the button on my tablet or tapping the surface of my bamboo tablet, then it works fine. But whatever I try, I cannot get the thing working with the Pen-input of the Bamboo.
What does work are the 'normal' items in the top of the screen, like 'file' 'edit' etcetera.
What doesn't work is the second bar, with the buttons to 'add media' or switch from 'simple' to 'professional' screen layout. (or similar wording... I have my version in Dutch)
The interesting thing, in Photoshop Elements, that second bar switching from 'easy' to 'expert' modus is working fine with the pen.
Please do not suggest me to re-install my Wacom/Bamboo drivers, for I can assure you: Nothing wrong with thát :-)
If you have suggestions to get it working in Premiere Elements, then most welcome of course.
Honestly I think it is a little techncal flaw that needs fixing by Adobe in the first update, right?
    Cheers,
    Hans

Thanks for the additional information on your Premiere Elements 13 Mac situation.
I have an older Wacom pen and tablet (named Wacom Graphire 3) which works fine with Premiere Elements 12/12.1 Windows. I do not think that I tried it
with Premiere Elements 13 tryout when I had the tryout. I still do not have the purchased version 13. I did not have any problems
using the pen and tablet in the Premiere Elements 12/12.1 Editor. My hang up with the Wacom was that, although it installed great with the
latest drivers, within 24 hours of installation and successful use of the device, I would start getting reinstall driver messages.
    I gave up on it
    a. I could not make that transfer of use from mouse and pen/tablet...I was so used to using the mouse.
    b. Got annoyed with the frequent reinstall driver messages.
I will keep watch for any further news on the subject Mac or Windows based.

  • Apps spread out over several screens - only 4 or 5 to a page

    Guys,
Apologies if this is something that comes up regularly but I've noticed my apps are strangely spaced out. After the first screen I scroll across to find 4 apps, then scroll across to another screen where there are 5 apps. Why are these not all on one page?
Hopefully it's something very simply and I'm being stupid but it's extremely annoying!
    Cheers,
    James

It sounds like you have not arranged your apps. To move the apps around, hold your finger on an app until they start jiggling. Once they are jiggling, use your finger to move them around. When you're done, click the Home button to freeze them in place.

  • Centering horizontally a page consisting of several Page Fragments

While centering a simple page horizontally was greatly described in SJSC
Field Guide and working fine, the same technique didn't work for multifragment
    jsf page.
Have somebody implemented the centering such a page horizontally?
Will appriciate for a working example.
    Thanks in advance

Can you summarize the technique in question, and then give a few details about how you are trying to do it with page fragments? Without that, it is difficult to tell what you want to do.

  • Several screens at the same time

    Hi,
I wanted to know if it was possible on Final Cut X to make something like this automatically:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sER_zF5zqCg
I loose a lot of time by setting each clip one by one, is there a mode where you just need to drag yours clips, and Final Cut cares about the rest?
Thanks for your answer, I really need to know before buying it...
    Firmin

Yeah -- you have 4 separate tracks with the same audio? Select all 4 tracks/clips in your Event and select Synchronize Clips. You end up with a compound clip in the event with all 4 clips synchronized to the audio. Open the compound clip in a Timeline and select all 4 clips. Use  Video > Transform and type in ~48% (if you want the "gutters") to resize all the clips at once. With the transform icon (lower left corner of the canvas) selected, drag each of your clips out to the four corners (or type in exact position values in Video > Transform > Position parameters.) To get the white background, you can use Generators > Elements > Shapes - set the color to whatever you like; select Rectangle from the drop down and Video > Transform > Scale to expand it to full screen. Drag the generator underneath your storyline to use as a background.
If you don't have audio to synch to, you can create multiple storylines. Add the first clip; reset the playhead and select your other clips that will appear in a 4-up and type Q to *connect* them to the storyline. Then select each one separately and right click > Create Storyline (or type command - G). You can then open each storyline in its own timeline (right click and select Open in Timeline) and append more clips to each "track". Back in the main storyline, drag out each connected storyline to reveal any appended material. The trim control will turn red when you reach the end of media in the created storylines. Resize and arrange as described above.

  • Photoshop CS6 - Screen flickering when using brushes with new MacAir 2013

Would the Adobe team please respond to the issues reported by several users:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/5449199
A number of users experience severe screen flicker in Photoshop CS6 when using any of the larger brush type tools (cloning, eraser, brush, spot healing, burning, and dodging).  As many on this thread are experiencing, it is awfull and unusable! The flicker is screen wide black boxes, sometimes the whole screen goes black.  It only seems to happen when we put the cursor over the image to edit.
Hardware:  MacBook Air 13", Haswell 1.7 GHz, 8GB, 512 SSD Software:
    Photoshop CS6 v13.1.2 20130105.r.224, OS X v10.8.4 (and perhaps others)
Looks like a CS6 is not compatible with teh new MacAir. Please look into this and advise.

    An update:
I went to the Apple store and brought myself a more recent MacBook Air (13", 4/256 FYI, they were out of the 8/512 model).    I can't reproduce *exactly* what you're showing, but got the flicker to happen by resizing the cursor.    Also, while painting, the screen seems to stop updating except for the cursor -- not only is Photoshop unable to draw, but other applications stop drawing as well.  And a few times it hasn't even updated the cursor (while all other apps seem frozen).  That's not normal.
When I see the flickering, I frequently see the menubar and other UI elements draw at the wrong location on the LCD, then black, then redraw in the correct location -- repeat in different positions and lots of "static" until I stop changing the cursor.  That's more evidence of a hardware or and odd driver issue.  The odd thing is: it doesn't happen all the time.  It's possible that the one we have at the office also shows the problem, but we didn't test long enough.
I'm trying to reach out to my hardware contacts at Apple - but it's a weekend before a holiday, so we may not make progress immediately.
One thing that would be useful here: the model of MacBook Air that you have that shows (or doesn't show) the problem.

  • Why don't I have the screen resolution I used to have on my iMac 2400.

I used to have several screen resolutions on my iMac 2400, now I only have two, 1920 X 1200 and 960 X 600.
Because I am a senior, my eyes need a resolution that provides clarity and is not too small.  960 X 600
prevents me from using Microsoft Office because I cannot select all of the options i.e. when I want to
print because the options are beyond the window and I cannot access them.  1920 X 1200 is too small
    for my senior eyes.
Please update the graphics driver with the resolutions I used to have.  More and more
seniors use computers and the younger developers need to understand this otherwise
    they will switch to PCs.

  • Loader Component in screens/app piece

I have an e-learning shell set up using the apps template. I
have several screens that have external swfs loading into the
loader component. With the auto load on the component the swfs all
automatically play upon load of the the app. If set to ffalse no
load upon the app loading. I do not want them to load when the app
loads only when you would move to the particular screen they are

would rather that they play automatically when the user navigates
to the screen they are sitting on. Any ideas on actionscript to
    control this?
    Thanks!

    I don't understand your explanation.
Is the SWFLoader loading a full SWF or an embedded symbol?  What is an invisible mode and how do you know it is in that mode?

  • Screen Tearing Issues

As of today, my Mac Mini has experienced severe screen tearing issues, it generally happens on Chrome but has started to also happen on other applications such as Pages. My Mac Mini is virtually brand new and has been used for about 2 weeks. I am using an TV via an HDMI cable. It is the 2.3ghz model with 4gb RAM.  The OS is Mavericks. I have tried restarting but that didn't help. Plus the Mac is now hot with very little apps open (Minecraft, Chrome (1tab)) and the fan is loud.

Doesn't sound good... You have 90 days free phone support and a one year warranty on your Mac Mini.
I would Contact Apple Support or the Apple Store where you made the purchased and have it checked out.
Additionally you might wat to get AppleCare, which extends the phone support and warranty to three full years.
