Sg 300-52 constant activity

we recently purchased a sg300-52.  i was told i would need to setup a port trunk to connect it our main catalyst.  However, i was able to connect a patch cable on the two devices and ping endpoint devices on both switches.  I also noticed that the activity lights are constantly blinking.  I'm not sure why.  Is there something i can do to slow the activity light?  it blicks constantly even in times of very low activity by the endpoint.

Hi Curtis,
Other traffic such as, broadcast traffic will be occurring within the vlan and it will be propagated on uplinks for devices within the same vlan..  You may be the uplink activity LED and maybe the PC activity LED flashing at the same time.
See the wireshark screen capture below taken from my PC.  It shows about 7percent of the traffic was broadcast or multicast related  traffic that will be broadcasted to all switch ports in the the same vlan. looking closely at this 10 second capture you will notice that 9.43 % of my traffic are plain old Layer 2 ARP packets.  I am not concerned.
Broadcast and multicast traffic within a vlan is normal.  Abnormal,  is when there may be too much of that traffic (many thousands of packets a second ) maybe due to some sort of Denial of service attack or bad NIC card. If multicast video is floating around , you may see several thousand packets per second for each multicast video stream.
Should you worry, not unless there is a denial of service attach going on.  Your symptoms however just indicate the activity LED is flashing, that sounds normal. If this LED  is almost always or flashing with great repetitively, then it's worth a wireshark trace to see what might be happening.
regards Dave.
Grab wireshark, and get a feel for the rate of traffic that is hitting the switch. I would think that rate of broadcast traffic shoudl not be too great.

  • Wireless network has CONSTANT activity???

    T61 dual boot, XP Pro (working fine) and Windows 7 Pro (working fine all but annoying wireless issue).  All seems to be well...except for the small green wireless activity light CONSTANTLY flashing in my face.  I can't see to figure out what the constant activity is all about.  No updates downloading...drivers are all up-to-date.
    Anyone have a suggestion?

  • External Hard-Drive Constant Activity!

    I have a WD 500gig external drive hooked up to my Macbook. Recently I have been having issues where the drive has constant activity (i.e. something is accessing it constantly and putting a load on it).
    I have music, videos, photos etc.. so for example if I were to play a song in iTunes (my music is on the drive) iTunes slows right down because the drive is really slow.
    I have tried closing all apps and seeing what happens, still light keeps flashing and something is accessing it. Then I opened Activity Monitor.. I did not see any abnormalities on what would be accessing the drive from there.
    Then I thought there were errors on the drive.. so for the sake of I fired up DiskWarrior ran checks, fixes etc etc. Still after that something is still loading it right down!.
    Any thoughts? The type of load on it is like it is being backed up.. or something is constantly sending info to it or receiving info from it.
    There is no apps on the drive, just general data.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,

    If you don't want to index the drive then open Spotlight preferences, click on the Privacy tab, then drag the disk icon into the list. Spotlight will stop indexing the drive. However, you will not be able to do Spotlight searches on the drive unless the drive is indexed. If you're OK with that then no problem. Otherwise, you will have to wait for indexing to complete. Note that if you continue using the drive Spotlight will pause until the drive becomes available, but this will slow down the time it takes to complete indexing the drive.
    If the drive is a USB drive then expect indexing to take much longer than for a Firewire drive. If you let the computer index the drive without you using the computer then indexing will go faster. Otherwise it will just take its own sweet time during which your computer and use of that drive will slow down.

  • New router = constant activity outgoing!

    I've replaced a DOA Microsoft G router, Installed a new NetGear N300 last week that generated repeated DoS Attack:STORMs and also hung occasionally - returned it - and got a Linksys E2000 today.
    Both the new routers were installed and exhibited something I had never seen before using the previous setup. CONSTANT outgoing activity.
    I only know this because I am running Little Snitch (an internet/network monitor program for OSX). The activity is being generated by - mDNSResponder - and outgoing to - dns-cc-lb-01.rr.com - (I recognize the last bit as being part of Roadrunner Cable - my ISP provider.)
    I've tried resetting everything, restarting everything only to have it continue. It's a bit disconcerting to see outgoing data and I would like to stop it if possible. Anyone know what this is exactly?
    *A second issue*
    The E2000 is a gigabit router, but when I connected it to my 10/100 wired home network - it didn't show up. Connecting directly, it works fine on Ethernet.
    If I need to chuck it all and go for a new Airport Extreme to solve these issues - so be it. It's getting frustrating.
    FWIW - the NetGear UI was quite good - the Linksys is poor.

    This is part of OSX: I quote:
    Mac OS X v10.6 uses the mDNSResponder process for unicast DNS (Domain Name System) functions, as well as Bonjour functions. Disabling the mDNSResponder process will also disable unicast DNS resolution, and without unicast DNS resolution, Mac OS X v10.6 cannot resolve hostnames such as www.apple.com.
    The same article gives a method for disabling it:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3789
    However it probably isn't actually transmitting very much information - many routers 'announce' their presence but it's only a few bytes, insignificant compared with normal traffic.
    Open Activity Monitor in Application/Utilities and scroll down the list of process names to find mdnsresponder: you will see how much of your CPU it's using. Mine is currently showing 0%.

  • Westell 6100G Data light constant activity

    I recived a new modem to replace my old 6100,my old one had 5 lights This new one (6100g) has 3 lights a internet ,data, and dsl light.Now I'm aware that when a light is flashing it means data is flowing through and or it's connecting.So why is it that the data light blinks non stop when the dsl and internet lights remain solid.I even detatched the ethernet cord and the data light was still blinking non stop is this normal? I can't imagine why it would be this active even when not in use.I can conncet to th internet but it seems alot slower than with my old modem.Also Im using a new pc with vista so im not sure if that has anyting to do with it.

  • Constant Activity between Airport Extreme and modem

    Hello all,
    I am the recent owner of an Airport Extreme. My Aiport Extreme is connected to my VDSL modem through the WAN port.
    In the Options menu, I set the option "Status Light" to "Flash on Activity".
    Doing so, I discovered that there is always activity between :
    1) the Airport Extreme           => I can see the green led flashing every 4-5 seconds
    2) the VDSL modem          => I can see the network led of the modem flashing every 4-5 seconds in sync with the Airport Extreme
    Initially, I thought it was "real traffic" coming either from wireless devices or ethernet devices... But after unplugging the ethernet cables (for the devices connected via cables) and after disabling the Wifi network of the Airport Extreme, the leds of both Airport Extreme and the modem were still flashing in sync every 4-5 seconds... Then, I also unchecked the "Set time automatically", and still, both leds were still flashing in sync at the same interval !
    I am a bit lost !
    I am wondering what there is traffic/activity happening every 4-5 seconds when no device (either via Ethernet or wifi) is connected.
    Do you also face the same issue ? Do you know the reason of the almost permanent activity between the Airport Extreme and my VDSL modem ?
    Thank you very much for your replies !
    Regards,
    trabala38

    Hello Bob Timmons,
    Thanks for your insight in this.
    Well, actually, to be logical, this traffic between the WAN port of the Airport Extreme and my modem could be coming from
    1) garbage/requests on the VDSL line from my ISP
    2) requests from the Airport Extreme to my modem
    If it is number 2, do you think that the Airport Extreme could query the modem every 4-5 seconds, i.e. to check that the Internet connection is alive ?
    Thanks for your feedback,
    Regards,

    Hi Greg,
    I'm absolutely not aware of any existing issue that forces Vista users to continually re-activate Audition! I don't even see anything in the Knowledge Base about this issue. Can you describe the situation a bit more in-depth? Does it "reset" with each launch, or is it more random? What is the exact message you receive when it asks you to activate again?

    Well I Clean installed again and DID NOT use the Migration assistant. I pulled over by hand what I knew I needed and left a Tome of old stuff behind. I did this as I had a Vanilla 10.5.1 on another drive and when I looked in console there were only 200 entries and nothing being written every minute. The install I was using that used the migration assist with had about 2500 entries every 2 days. Every minute It was doing the crone error. It was driving me nuts seeing the VM memory climbing to 2 megs. Now I have none of those issues!!! So whatever it was I did not pull over, Thank God. I kept checking console as I pulled things over and restarted and all held with no repeating errors in perpetuity. I had sent the issue to MacFixit and he suggested a clean install without migration. He could not figure out what it was either. I had felt this was what to do after seeing the other install (that had no migration) and when he confirmed it I bit the bullet and spent the day and now I have none of those repeating errors issues. Yikes this upgrade has been a BEAR But I Do Love Leopard! Very fresh once you start Fresh. I hoped this helps out some of you with the same issue.

  • WRT600N: Diagnosing Constant "Internet" Activity

    I have a WRT600N connected to a Scientific Atlanta Model DPX110 cable modem and I'm seeing constant "internet" activity between my router and the cable modem.  The intenet activity light is banging like crazy on the router and the "PC/LAN" light on the cable modem is also banging like mad.  Have disabled all wrieless interfaces and disconnected every network connection from the router except that of the cable modem.  Have also cycled power on both the cable modem and router a number of times just to make sure nothing is stuck in a wierd state.  Basically, nothing I have done seems to get rid of this constant activity between the router and modem.  I'm pretty sure the activity is not coming in from the WAN side of the modem as I'm not seeing any comparable activity on the modems "Cable/WAN" activity light.  Not sure exactly when the behavior began, but I'm pretty sure this was not happening in the past.  Also upgraded to the latest WRT600N firmware to see if that helps, but it did not.  Any suggestions on how to diagnose what this traffic is between my cable modem and WRT600N short of a network sniffer?  Is there some way to make the router log this activity for me to view?  I initially assumed the activity was being caused by the router, but now am beginning to wonder if if might be the cable modem doing it...  Anyway,  any suggestions appreciated.  Thanks!

    Yeah, I had considered doing that and may still do so shortly.  Was just a bit concerned with bypassing the hardware firewall in case the cable modem has somehow been compromised.  Thought there might be a way to see what the "internet" traffic is before allowing the cable modem direct access to my PC.  Paranoid, I know...
    May try hooking directly to my PC shortly...  but first I believe I'll need to locate and install the original network card to which the cable service is keyed.  Haven't seen it in some time as I've long since had a Linksys cable router with MAC address spoofing in use.  Will provide updates on what I find.
    Thanks for the feedback!

    Norton, c'est MAL!
    Norton Antivirus (made by Symantec) has a very long and illustrious reputation for mangling Mac OS X systems, sometimes to the point where a complete reinstall is necessary. Among other things, it installs kernel extensions which are known to cause kernel panics and system freezes; it contains known and documented bugs which can silently corrupt Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign files, destroy a user's ability to authenticate as an administrator, and (on PPC systems) can cause Classic to stop functioning; and Symantec has on at least two occasions now released flawed .dat file updates which erroneously report certain critical Mac OS X files as "viruses." (Deleting these "viruses" causes damage to the system that in some cases renders it unbootable.)

  • I can't stop "Reads in/sec" disk activity, remains at constant 20-30

    I was hoping this community would be able to help me to solve this problem of constant disk activity I can't figure out. I'm afraid it'll kill my disk eventually.
    Problem:
    Constant disk access noise, "Reads in/sec" remains at constant 20-30 even when I have next to nothing running. It's clearly attempting to do something. Kernel task is one of the few tasks showing activity, but only a few CPU %.
    This occurs only on one user account. If I switch the account to a clean one, disk activity stops.
    In Disk Utility I've tried repairing permissions. Also, Verify reveals nothing abnormal.

    Seems you're running some sync program in that user account. Since it doesn't happen in another account, it's not system-wide. If you have one running, quit it and see if that fixes things. If not, then disable FileVault and see that fixes things.

  • IPod touch 3G - activation required, will not sync properly, freezes up windows 7

    Hi,
    I am having a lot of trouble with my iPod touch 3G.
         I had not synced my iPhone 4 and my iPod touch for about a month as I was re-inputting my music into iTunes - I didn't want to sync them when not all the music I wanted would be synced onto them. Prior to syncing the devices, one day my iPod randomly displayed the "activation required" notification and the "connect to iTunes" screen. Neither my iPod nor my iPhone is jail broken, so this cannot be the cause of the deactivation. All I use my iPod for is plugging into my stereo system.
         Regardless, I had finally managed to sort through all my music and had managed to sync my iPhone with no hitches. However, I ran into various issues with the iPod. A pop-up in iTunes said that it detect the device but could read it and that I would need to restore my iPod. So I did so (restored to the back-up). However, not even a third of the way into the restore everything just seemed to stop. My screen went black with only the mouse flickering. I restarted my computer and tried restoring it again (again to the back-up). It got further this time and actually managed to sync some songs (around 70 out of 850). However, a pop-up appeared saying that iTunes could not write from the song or disk. So I unplugged my iPod and plugged it back in and it immediately slowed down my computer. Chrome would not respond, Shockwave crashed, iTunes would not respond, etc.
         Anyways, over the past couple days I have tried restoring the iPod (to factory settings) and that seems to have worked. I no longer have the constant "activation required" notification. iTunes seems to be having trouble syncing though. It will get a couple more songs synched and then display another pop-up saying that it could not write from the song files and then the synching process just gets stuck. The iPod no longer displays the synching icon, but iTunes remains stuck on "finishing sync".
    (The problem cannot be with the songs as they sync perfectly fine to my iPhone).
         On my iPod it shows all the songs which are/should be synched onto it. The synched songs appear in black (like normal) however, the majority of my songs are in a light grey and cannot be selected or played (basically it has the information about the song, but not the actual file itself). I can also use Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. They are both greyed-out and say "No Wi-Fi" or "Unavailable" respectively.
         Just as a note, I am on Windows 7 and have McAfee Antivirus Plus. I know that some people have some issues due to the firewall but I unsure as to how this could be the cause when my iPhone syncs perfectly well under the same conditions. I have iTunes 10.7.0.21 and my iPod is running on 5.1.1. If you need any additional information please ask!
    If someone could please help, I would be extremely grateful! I'm at my wits end.
    Thanks!

    See if disabling the antivirus and firewall resolves the problem.

  • Constant HDD access (K8N Neo4 Platinum)

    Hello all, this is my first time posting on these forums.
    A couple of days ago I put together a new system for myself, with the following components:
    * Athlon64 3200+ processor
    * MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum motherboard
    * 1Gb RAM
    * Gigabyte 128Mb GeForce 6600GT graphics card
    * 2x Seagate 250Gb 7200rpm SATA drives
    * LG IDE dual-layer DVD-RW drive
    * Apacer 7-in-1 internal USB 2.0 card reader
    * Thermaltake "soprano" ATX midi-tower w/ 400W PSU
    The two hard drives I have connected to ports SATA5 and SATA6 on the motherboard and set up in a RAID1 configuration (using the on-board Silicon Image SiI 3114 RAID controller). I then installed Windows XP Professional, which went on fine. The only problem I have now is that the hard drives are being constantly accessed by the system, even when I'm doing nothing on the system. This isn't just an occasional access once every second or so, the little HDD LED just flickers away merrily the whole time. I have run both filemon and diskmon on the system, and found that while no particular files appear to be being accessed, there is almost constant write activity being performed to the hard drives.
    I have narrowed it down to somehow involving the Windows XP RAID drivers. If I boot from the Windows XP install disk and load the third party drivers for the SiI 3114, I get the constant disk access when sitting at the first screen of the install process ("Welcome to Windows XP" text-only screen). If I do the same without loading the drivers (thus Windows does not recognise the RAID drive), no disk access. I have tried updating the RAID controller drivers under the Device Manager (now up to version 1.2.0.0), but it does not fix the problem. I have done a full virus and spyware scan (bearing in mind that this is a clean install), with no results. I have checked all running processes and services (including making sure Indexing Service is not running), but have been unable to find anything that could be causing this constant activity. I have yet to try actually breaking the mirror and running the drives off the normal SATA controller. I will be trying that tonight when I get home if no other solution presents itself, but obviously I would rather get it behaving properly in RAID1 if at all possible.
    It's driving me crazy. There doesn't appear to be any actual issues with the performance of the machine, but the constant hard disk activity can't be good for the drives long-term. I have searched these forums for a possible solution, and while some people have had similar problems, none of the suggested solutions have worked for me so far. If anyone can help me with my dilemma, I would be Eternally Grateful(tm).

    Yes! At least I'm not alone... constant disk ticking is driving me nuts too.
    I have same issue with a newly built system - different board but Sil3114.
    My C: is on the NF4 SATA interface, but I have 4 250GB Seagaets on the Sil3114, intended for a RAID5 array. Having installed XP, I've become distracted by the constant disk access and have been trying everything to eliminate it before proceeding with the rest of the build - nogo. Your post gave me the clue - boot with Sil3114 disabled = no disk activity; boot with enabled = constant disk flogging.
    I've got the Sil driver up to 1.2.3.1 but no better. Suspect it may be the Sil3114 BIOS that needs upgrading but seems no way to flash it - have you got anywhere with your debugging?
    Appreciate a solution before I go crazy with the tick, tick tick....
