SGA Memory Allocation

Does SGA takes it's memory space from RAM or Hard Disk? what's the default size occupied?

The documentation is excellent. It does not have the solution for all problems, but if it does have the solution then being able to look it up makes you more efficient than if you ask a question here and then twiddle your thumbs while waiting for someone else to look it up for you.
I posted a link that had the exact answer to your question, in this case the documentation was all you needed.

I am just going to say that if you refuse to look at the documentation and read it for yourself, you are only hurting yourself, you will be less efficient than you should be, it will take you longer to get answers and you are not going to learn much.

  • Memory Allocation in database ...

    These are the parameters which i given to my database .Actualy my db version is 11.1.0 but compatible is 10.2.0...thats why i am using these parameters in my init.ora...

    Actually i created this database as per other db which was there in 8.1.6...
    But when i am comparing with the 8i db my SGA which i given has too much different ...

    COuld some one tell why its come that much differnece...My TOTAL RAM IS 2GB ...Please let me know how I can set my 11g db Memory .. like 8i database memory

    hi memory allocation should always depends on how many transactions hitting your database. it is not appropriate to set 1.5GB or less than that if your database is getting only 1-2 lakh tx's per day.
    You have any reference doc to prove this point? On what basis one would assume his memory sizes when the transactions everyday are increasing in a database?
    i remember 11g is having a wonderful parameter called MEMORY_TARGET. if possible please use that
    I agree its a good parameter.Just an additional note for it It has a different algorithm to allocate the memory. You need to tweak your machine some times a bit to make this parameter work. The memory allocations of /dev/shm needs some time to be tweaked.

    I am new to Oracle Database and i learn DBA any help me.
    My Database Ram Size is 16 Gb
    Now the SGA Size is below

    Fixed Size 736592 bytes
    Variable Size 1593835520 bytes
    Database Buffers 2147483648 bytes
    Redo Buffers 5529600 bytes
    Now i want to increase the SGA size to 5 Gb
    How to increase the SGA Size and give the examples SGA Based parameters also i want to increase so Kindly Help.

    Hi.It is correct that you must look into the documentation as the first-point-of-resource.It will be more quicker than to wait for the reply here.Not to say that don't post your question but do a search, get some thing in your hand,read it and when you dont understand it than post the question here.It will be more better approach of learning.
    For your question , in 9i you can't increase the total memory for your SGA on the fly as like you can (to some extent).If you want to increase the total memory allocated to your SGA than you need to change the parameters which constitute the total memory for the SGA in 9i.REad here.

    SGA_MAX_SIZE parameter controls the total memory allocated to your SGA in 9i.You need to change its value in the parameter file/spfile and bounce your db to reflect teh changes.

  • Oracle Memory Allocation

    I have set the SGA_MAX_SIZE to 1024M
    Following is the Memory allocation at startup
    SQL> startup nomount

    I have 512M Physical Memory (RAM) and 1024M Virtual Memory.
    Does this mean Oracle will reserve/block the complete 512M Physical Mem. + 512M from Virtual Memory at startup? will my Virtual Memory usage shootup to 512M or more?
    DB & OS: Oracle 10.2.0.1 on Windows XP SP1

    In my case the entire SGA_MAX_SIZE is allocated at startup. Check the SGA, Shared pool size in my first post.
    I just checked PRE_PAGE_SGA and it is set to FALSE

  • Initial sizing of sga memory components.

    Hi to all,
    I want to know that how many granules be allocated to each sga components initially when we use automatic memory menagement. Let's say SGA _target is 1g. version 10.2.0
    thnxs in advance.

    The SGA comprises a number of memory components, which are pools of memory used to satisfy a particular class of memory allocation requests. Examples of memory components include the shared pool (used to allocate memory for SQL and PL/SQL execution), the java pool (used for java objects and other java execution memory), and the buffer cache (used for caching disk blocks). All SGA components allocate and deallocate space in units of granules. Oracle Database tracks SGA memory use in internal numbers of granules for each SGA component.
    The memory for dynamic components in the SGA is allocated in the unit of granules. Granule size is determined by total SGA size. Generally speaking, on most platforms, if the total SGA size is equal to or less than 1 GB, then granule size is 4 MB. For SGAs larger than 1 GB, granule size is 16 MB. Some platform dependencies may arise. For example, on 32-bit Windows NT, the granule size is 8 MB for SGAs larger than 1 GB. Consult your operating system specific documentation for more details.
    You can query the V$SGAINFO view to see the granule size that is being used by an instance. The same granule size is used for all components in the SGA.
    If you specify a size for a component that is not a multiple of granule size, Oracle Database rounds the specified size up to the nearest multiple. For example, if the granule size is 4 MB and you specify DB_CACHE_SIZE as 10 MB, the database actually allocates 12 MB.

  • Doubt in memory allocation

    I have doubt in object memory allocation. for example see the following code,

    1) int index = str.toLowerCase( ).indexOf("ram", 0);
    2) String temp = str.toLowerCase( );
    int index = temp.indexOf("ram", 0);
    Ques:
    from the above two form of coding which one is advicible and gives good performance.
    what will happen when i execute str.toLowerCase( ).indexOf("ram", 0);, i mean wthether i will do the lowercase conversion in same memory location or create temporary memory area.

  • Cache Memory Allocator \ Short Term Memory Allocator Issues

    Hi all
    I have a number of identically configured (High School) Servers which are giving me the same memory errors (some more frequently than others) and I've run out of ideas.
    They are all HP Proliant DL360 G6 Servers, NetWare 6.5 sp8 with eDir 8.8 sp5.
    The error messages are :
    "Cache memory allocator out of available memory." followed by "Short term memory allocator is out of memory. xxx attempts to get more memory failed. request size in bytes xxxxxxxx from Module SWEEP.NLM"
    The module referred to is always "SWEEP.NLM" (Sophos Anti-virus). A Server reset solves the problem but it is normally back within a month.
    I've posted below a config.txt and segstats.txt from one of the servers.
    I would be grateful if someone could help me with this as it's now becoming a 'headache'.

    Somewhat. From the time of day, and the loading of commvault modules
    inbetween, this looks like a combined backup / AV scan issue. The
    requests of Sophos are comparably big in size, and they vary a lot. That
    will lead to fragmentation of your memory, until the memory can't be
    allocated in one chunk any more. It also *seems* as if Sophos actually
    scans the data while it gets backed up. That is *bad*.

    2. If its ICMP Polling failure from IBM Tivoli Netcool , ICMP is Protocol Number 1 in Internet Layer of TCP/IP Protocol Suite  and TCP is Protocol                 Number 6 in the Transport Layer of TCP/IP Protocol Suite .
    So I am still not sure how TCP Protocol Process Failure could have caused ICMP Timeout . Please help !

  • Memory allocation in CS 5.5

    First time to the forum and a relatively new user in AE.
    Here's my error message:
    "Memory allocation of 9.2 GB exceeds internal limits. Decrease the memory requirements for the rendering of this frame (12802). For more info: www.adobe/com/go/learn_ae_mem"
    So here's where the confusion sets in:
    a) I've gone through the forums and tweaked the multiprocessing settings... still get the same error.
    b) I've changed the color bit depth to 8 (mentioned in another posting)
    My comp is a full HD animation simulating a walk through a hallway. There's roughly 14 elements in the composition and the camera movement is a pan in. 
    I hope this is enough information to get the ball rolling. If more info is needed, I'll do my best to get you what you need.

    Below are screen shots of the aforementioned settings. I receive the error as I scrub to 00;00;20 on the composition. The message displays as a large .jpg file begins to rotate out and another .jpg file rotates in. I've used a camera to pan in on this elements' transitions but am not using any effects directly. I hope this helps!

    I would like to ask if there is a default maximum memory allocation in the virtual machine?
    I know there are params for setting the initial und maximum size but I'm not sure if the vm will take as much memory as I have in my computer or not.

  • Internal Table Memory Allocation

    Hello all,
    I could understand the difference between Internal Table with occurs 0 and internal table with type declaration...
    correct me if i am wrong, occurs 0 declaration occupies 8kb memory and header line 256 bytes...
    But what i could not get is...
    Where can i view this internal table runtime memory usage?? Should i have to check that in some transaction???
    If that is the case, what transaction i should look at?? Can i view this in debugging mode??? I tried GOTO -> STATUS DISPLAY -> MEMORY USE and i have tried even SETTINGS -> MEMORY MONITORING ->MEMORY DISPLAY ON...Nothing worked..
    when i go for GOTO -> STATUS DISPLAY -> MEMORY USE in debugging
    memory allocated seems to be same for Internal table with occur 0 and Internal table with type declaration
    I have searched a lot about this in SDN....But could not come to a conclusion......
    I don't have authorisation here for DBG_MEMORY_DIFFTOOL or S_MEMORY_INSPECTOR unfortunately.....

    You can view this on Debugger(ECC6.0) onwards.
    To find out how much memory internal tables occupy, choose Goto --> Display Condition --> Memory Usage.
    Choose Change Settings to display a window, in which you can choose the Internal Tables button.

  • Can't use memory allocated in C to write then read BitmapData in AS

    I've been attempting to use Alchemy to allocate a chunk of memory in C, and then write a bitmap to the memory (via getPixels) which is I would then be able to modify using my super fast C image processing functions.  I've been following the "Memory allocation in C with direct access in Actionscript (FAST!!)" section from here.
    The problem is that when I allocate the memory in C, then try to display the image using setImage, all I see is a black box on the screen.  The code below shows how I use getPixels to fill the C memory region with my bitmap data, then use setPixels to fill the BitmapData object which is displayed on the screen.  Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong here?  I've been really stuck on this

    There is full flash code and C++ code so you should be able to answer all your questions just by reading my post. However, one thing I see about how you're passing your pointer back to flash is:
        //return pointer to the location in memory
        return AS3_Int((int)buffer);
    I think should be:
        //return pointer to the location in memory
        return AS3_Ptr(buffer);
    You shouldn't be casting your char array as an int and returning it, just use AS3_Ptr(buffer) and that will return the actual memory address as an int to flash. I'm not 100% sure but I think this could be an issue. I use this method also in my code you can find in the link above so you can see the full implementation there. Hope that helps.

  • Can't increase memory allocation

    For a previous question it was recommended that I allocate more memory to an application. However, when I attempt to do that with Get Info, I only get the options of "General Information" or "Sharing". "Memory" is never listed. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

    Under General Information, check what the file's kind is listed as; if it is 'application program package', control-click it and choose Show Package Contents. Open the folder Contents and then MacOSClassic, or MacOS if there isn't a MacOSClassic folder. Inside this folder, locate the application and increase the memory allocation.
