"sh-2.05a#" on crashing initial loading screen.

Yesterday, I had a problem with my cd drive:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1559020&tstart=0
Trying to fix it, I followed these instructions:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106345
which involved updating the hostconfig file. I now wish I hadn't of done this.
I restarted my computer as was told and now it doesn't get past the initial grey loading screen and has a:
"sh-2.05a#"
code message at the top left hand corner of the screen. The loading wheel now stops too.
Please help!!!!
I seriously can't lose everything on my harddrive, it would be a major problem for me.

at the sh-2.05a# prompt you could undo what you did by reversing step 6.
You did do step 6 yes? If you didn't then this won't apply. What step 6 did was copy the original and save as a file called hostconfg.old.
Now following the code below replace the changed hostconfig with the original one that you saved.
6. Type
sudo mv /etc/hostconfig.old /etc/hostconfig
7. Press Return.
8. Type the Admin user password, and press Return. (that might not be necessary here but do so if requested)
Now restart and see if it boots correctly.
By the way, the article that you followed applies to 10.0.1 to 10.0.4. Your profile says you are on Jaguar 10.2, so at first glance, I would not have thought that solution would apply to you.
Try replacing the CD drive. Do you have a spare one around?

Hi Tom (and anyone else reading this message),
First, a warning: Terminal can be dangerous if not fatal to a Mac. Unless you know exactly what you're doing, I STRONGLY encourage people not to fiddle with it. Unfortunately, you seem to have found out the hard way.
I would post this issue in the OSX folder and see if someone knowledgeable in these matters can help you undo what you did in Terminal.
Beyond that, I'd try booting into FireWire Target Disk Mode. If that works, you can get your files off. If that's all you need, and if you don't get a fix from the OSX people, then I would erase and zero the HD, then remote install a new OS on it via another Mac.
Oh, and I almost forgot. Apparently you didn't believe in backups before. I hope you see the need for frequent backups now, the more important the data, the more frequent the backups. I do it at least daily. For the very little time it takes, it sure is a cheap insurance policy. External HD: $100. FW cable: $5. My data: priceless.

  • Won't go past initial loading screen

My poor ol' Brian (my Mac's name) won't turn on properly!
The last thing I was doing was getting it to restart after a system upgrade as per instructed.
Then it was frozen with my desktop wallpaper and the use of the mouse without anything to click on.
So I removed the battery and put it back in. Turned it back on and was faced with the initial loading screen: *white background screen, grey apple and continuous loading circle*. This went on for hours. Kinda annoying since I hear the vents running air so it is running, just not the way he's supposed to.
I've removed the adapter so my battery runs flat and tried to turn it back on after a little bit of adapter connection but the initial loading screen won't change into my login screen! Gah!
Any help would be muchly appreciated.

I had this problem several months ago and it turned out to be my hard drive. If you have Apple Care or if you're still under your 1 year warranty Apple should replace it free of charge.

  • After Effects Crash on Loading Screen

As I open After Effects, the purple loading screen appears and it appears to be loading. As it starts to say 'Cleaning Up', a warning message appears. It says: "After Effects Warning: Invalid type conversion". After this pop-up disappears, another comes up saying: "After Effects error: Crash in progress. Last logged message was: <3256> <ae.blitpipe> <2> Making New Context". It then asks me to go to Adobe help. I don't know why it keeps crashing. Help please! (THIS IS ON A WINDOWS 7 PC, RUNNING AN INTEL i7 PROCESSOR, ADOBE AFTER EFFECTS v.12.2.1)

  • Flash CS6 crashing on loading screen - everytime.

    Hi All,
Ive just purchased Adobe Design and Web Premium.
Ive managed to run other applications without any problem, like Photoshop 64bit, Illustrator 64bit, InDesign and Dreamweaver.
However, everytime I tried to run Flash Professional CS6 it crashes when the loading screen appears.
It says "Adobe Flash CS6 has stopped working"
My system is running on Win 7 64bit
Ive also updated my windows and ran Adobe Updates.
Oh also tried uninstalling and clean up using the Adobe Creative Suite Cleaner
Still it crashes... only Flash Pro. The rest aint got any problem.
Would appreciate if there's any help or tips you can give.

Is anyone esle still having this problem? I tried removing preferences and still got the error. I also uninstalled the entire CS6 install, ran the Adobe CS6 cleaunup tool and removed everything, reinstalled. I can get it to run if I run it as Admin, but that's annoying to click away the UAC prompt all the time and I don't like running programs as admin if I can avoid it for general security reasons..
I thought it might be like Photoshop where it's incorrectly setup to run from a multi- hard disk environment like mine where the registry is setup to have user folders and files on a separate drive ( see this photoshop thread) but there doesn't seem to be any way of changing scratch disks in InDesign like the photoshop work-around.
    Anyway, here's my system info:
    Windows 7 Ultimate x64
    xeon x5550 ht
    8gb RAM
    ATI Firepro 1gb
    2 disks
C: = windows system and software files

  • Photoshop/Illustrator don't start - no crash, no loading screen

    Hey,
I downloaded the trial versions of Photoshop and Illustrator yesterday and installed them.
When I execute the executable file (Photoshop.exe/Illustrator.exe / 64 Bit and 32 Bit) neither a loading screen/splashscreen pops up nor I get a crash message.
I deactivated my antivirus, my firewall and logged out several times (Creative Cloud).
I also reinstalled both applications (uninstalled, downloaded it completely, installed again)
    It still doesn't work.
    Can anyone please help me?
    Thanks,
    xthepr0mise

I don't understand what I should tell you what is relevant for this problem.
    Windows 7 64 Bit

    2TB HDD
There is nothing in my Event Viewer.

  • Final Cut Pro crashes during load screen.

When I open FCP, the loading screen comes on. During the loading, FCP closes. There is no error message.
I have already tried the two solutions posted as announcements on the top of the FCP forum:
    1. I have deleted unnecessary Quicktime components from (Library>Quicktime).
    2. I have downloaded the most recent software update.
Thanks for any suggestions you might have,

A solution from an earlier post solved my problem. I deleted the Final Cut Pro preferences ("Final Cut Pro 5.0 Prefs") (MAC HD> Library> Preferences> Final Cut Pro User Data). FCP opens now.
Here's the post where I found the solution:

  • IMac Hangs at loading screen or loads into os but crashes alot

I have had my iMac for 7 months now. This is the 1st problem I have had.
Sometimes it will hang on the loading screen with the apple logo and the spinning cursor.
Sometime's it would load into the OS but once I start doing anything on it like using firefox, msn etc it will just hang, freeze then it will crash and I get the beach ball thing spinning forever.
I took it to the apple store in UK, Westfield.
The guy turnt it on and it loaded, and he said there as nothing wrong with it, I told him there was but he insisted there wasnt anything wrong with it. Iv'e took it back home and now it crashes everytime it loads into the OS.
I ran hardware test and it came back with 0 errors I am now running an extended test just to double check.
Any ideas what could be causing the mac to behave like this? it just happened out of the blue 1 morning im very confused.
    Cheers.

Sure looks like it but since you've had your iMac for less than a year it might be covered by the one year limited warranty. Do you have AppleCare?
I can see why you would be confused since the information you got at that repair provider was iffy.

  • HELP! MacBook Pro won't turn on - loads up to the grey loading screen for a while then crashes., HELP! MacBook Pro won't turn on - loads up to the grey loading screen for a while then crashes.

Was using it fine then I rested my iPad mini on the keys and the screen went black and then came back but then froze for a little bit the audio went then after a bit it turned it self off and when I try and turn it on its loads to the grey loading screen loads for a bit then crashes - please help, I have got very important data on there that I need to access, thank you.
(PS I have booked a genius appointment for 3 days time but really need to use it before then)

No backups? Then I would, were I you, definitely order an inexpensive USB enclosure to try to rescue the files. Most companies in the US ship to the Phillipines, don't they? Where do you usually shop for computer gear? I don't know how much space/speed you really want but Seagate's 1 terabyte SSHD is an economic route to go for the 'feeling' of a SSD. I can also recommend Hitachi and Toshiba drives.
Just make certain that you get the right form factor - 2.5" x 9.5mm. You can get drives a bit thinner and a bit thicker, but I would stay close to that thickness range at any rate.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Qosmio X500 - Black screen crash when loading games, requiring reboot

I have a brand new Qosmio X500 (PQX33A-00X00J) with all the original drivers as they came out the box, and 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium OS. The only thing I've done on this laptop is install games. The laptop runs fine for most things, and for a very few games (Unreal Tournament 2007 is the only one so far), but almost all games crash with a black screen the first time they're run. Sometimes I'll see a splash screen the first time, and once or twice I've got to a start screen, but thereafter the screen goes completely black, no sound, and the machine freezes requiring a reboot.
It's extremely frustrating, considering this is a brand new, out of the box gaming laptop, and I haven't changed any drivers or anything. It's running an Nvidia Geforce GTS 250M display card, and the native resolution for the LCD screen is 1920x1080. I suspect it may have something to do with the unusual native screen resolution or the aspect ratio, because I managed to get one game to run (FEAR) by going into the supplied config utility and setting the game's default screen resolution to 1024x768. FEAR has the same crash if set to a higher resolution.
    The games I've tried:
Unreal Tournament 2007 - runs perfectly at all resolutions
Half Life 2 - crashes on launch with black screen, no sound, requiring reboot.
Counter Strike - the 1st time I managed to the setup screen, changed screen resolution, it crashed immediately. Thereafter it crashes straight away on launch, I can't even get to the setup screen. Uninstalled, reinstalled, same thing, crashes on launch with black screen, requiring reboot.
Bioshock - only ever got a "Bioshock" logo, then crashes with black screen, requiring reboot.
Frontlines - Fuel of War - crashes on launch with blank screen, requiring reboot.
Call Of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare - crashes immediately on loading with black screen, requiring reboot.
Crysis - crashes immediately on loading with black screen, requiring a reboot.
Except for UT 2007, almost every game has just crashed the first time it's been run, I usually don't even get a 1st shot at trying to change any settings. I've tried loading the games that provide a safe mode in that (e.g. Modern Warfare), but the same thing happens. I've also tried setting the laptop resolution to 1024x768 before running the games, but no difference. I've also made sure I'm running the latest patched version of the games, and I've checked the Toshiba website, but there are no driver updates so far that I can find for this laptop either.
I'm completely pulling my hair out, and solving this is very time consuming, because every time I try anything I have to reboot before I can try something else. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Someone suggested I try turning off my antivirus, and it turns out that was the problem. It seems Comodo has compatibility problems with games in Windows 64-bit editions since one of their latest releases.

  • Windows XP crashes compleet black screen

When using Lightroom in the develop mode, windows crashes complete, the screen turns black and the computer is off.
I imported about 300 pictures in a existing data base and when I was correcting the pictures in the develop mode my computer crashes.
Then I made a new data base with only those pictures and it happened again.
    Black computer off.
This is a big problem for me.
    Met vriendelijke groeten,
    Wilco van der Lugt

The kind of problem you describe is, without exception, indicative of a low-level problem, either in the operating system itself (very unlikely, XP is extremely mature by now), some drivers that get used (very, very likely), or a hardware defect (unlikely).
What you do triggers "a condition", and that condition results in what you see.
No user application (such as Lightroom) can kill a machine the way you describe by itself. This is not to say that Lightroom does not contribute, but ultimately at fault is something at a much, much lower level.
Suggestion: Update the operating system, update all drivers, run hardware diagnostic tests.
Further, try running the operating system in "Safe Mode" (which will disable a number of third-party drivers and falls back to non-optimal, but extremely well-tested base drivers).
[Just some trivia: A long, long time ago, I ran into a problem where the computer would spontaneously turn off. It turned out that my power supply simply was not equipped to handle the load put onto it. Net effect: Hard power off, initiated by the power supply.]

update to IOS 6 has been a nightmare. Facebook would allow me to save pictures unless I granted access to my foto album. Does this mean my pictures are going be planted all over the web? The safari keeps crashing and loading is slow. Most infuriating is that YouTube was deleted from my entertainment apps and I now have to pay for it if I want it back!! This is a bloody disgrace.

    Back up all data.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.
