Shades of gray in a color photo

I'm trying to change the color of a white door in a color photo in order to experiment with some shades of gray. I selected the door and tried playing with the hue/saturation control, but that didn't work. I created a new layer with color blend and painted various shades of gray, but there was always a color tint to it.
Is there a way to change the mode of the selection ONLY to grayscale?

Using PE2. Make your selection, then click enhance, adjust color, remove color.

    Printer was purchased two days ago.  The printer will not print in color only black and shades of gray.  alignment test on 2/28/15 showed color.  cartridges show full.

    Hi there @ChuckHilde
    Welcome to the HP Community
    I saw your post about how you cannot print in color, and I would like to refer you to try the steps I previously recommended in another thread. The printer itself prints in color, therefor there is most likely settings on your Mac that need to be changed.
    Click here to get to that thread and try the steps: Re: Printer Only Prints Pictures in Black & White
    You should be able to print in color after those steps!

  • ATI oss color space compressed in the dark shades of gray

    With the arrival von linux 3.13 to [core] I switched from catalyst to the open source drivers, as they finally provide a sufficient performance. My only problem now is that the colorspace is compressed for gray values below 16 (that means every shade of gray having values of 0 to 16 look just black). That's only the case for my HDMI-output connected to my TV, which worked without problems with the catalyst drivers. Also, only the dark grays are compressed, the near-white grays show up correct.
    In the wiki I found a xrandr-command "--set "Broadcast RGB" "Full"", which can be used with chips from Intel. Is there something similar for the open source ati drivers?

    That's just outputting the options "load detection", "dither", "audio", "underscan vborder", "underscan hborder", "underscan" and "coherent" for both my monitor and TV - are these really all? Here's the full output:
    $ xrandr -q --verbose

    Just to emphasize this further: color space compression is not a problem on my monitor, but only on the TV. Setable options don't differ as you can see in the output above. Also, Xorg.0.log shows that the TV on HDMI-0 supports the RGB 4:4:4 encoding (just like the monitor does). Here's the full Xorg.0.log:

  • Making color photos print as grayscale

    I am working on a large book with lots of photos. The final book will print 4 spot colors and the photos will be converted to grayscale. I would like to place the original source color photos into InDesign and make them print grayscale, while allowing the other color elements in the document (type, charts, and rules) to print in color.
    This would save lots of time doing grayscale conversions, and organizing two sets of photos.
    -- My plan is to have the printer do the final grayscale conversions.
    Does anyone know anyway to do this?
    Thanks in advance for your help,
    Dave

    When printing from ID, go to Output and change color to Composite Gray.
    Edit> didn't see that you wanted other elements to print color. Quite simply you would have to bring the images into ID as grayscale already to achieve this.

  • In Safari, the top of of the screen is no longer white; it's a dark gray, and everything is in shades of gray. The line that shows a page is loading is now  white instead of blue. Any ideas why it's so dark and in black/white?

    All of a sudden, in Safari, the top of the page is no longer white; instead it's a dark gray, and the bar where you type in a web address is a slightly lighter shade of gray. The rest of the page is in color like always. Also, the line that shows a page is loading is white against the gray background, isntead of the usual blue. Any thoughts?

    Tap "Private" on Safari Screen to disable Private Browsing. When top of screen is white, Private Browsing is off.

  • Shades of gray

    I'm getting there folks.
    Today I am trying to draw several ellipses filled with different shades of gray. At the end I need to write a 16bit PNG file with the gray ellipses in it. I don't know how to set the gray value for the fill operation. Can someone point me in the right direction? The code creates a black image and fills white ellipses on it then writes it out to a file. I need to change the foreground to different grays for each ellipse, I have to pick the integer (short) value of the gray.

    BufferedImage destIm = makeImage(destB, 500, 500);
    Graphics2D g2 = destIm.createGraphics();

    for(int i = 0; i < 10; i++)

    g2.setTransform(aT);
    ImageIO.write(destIm, "png", new File("output.png"));

    }

    The following method can be used for setting the painting color
    g2.setColor(Color color);The following method can be used for setting the background color
    g2.setBackground(Color color);The color-constructor takes in three floats for the values of red, green and blue which should lie between
    0.0 and 1.0, indicating from no intensity to full intensity. You can create all shades of grey
    from white to black by setting the three values equal.
    So:
    Color black = new Color(0f, 0f, 0f);
    Color white = new Color(1f, 1f, 1f);
    Color shadeOfGrey = new Color(0.5, 0.5, 0.5);
    Color whiterShadeOfPale = new Color(0.75, 0.75, 0.75);kind regards,

  • I am unable to print color photos from i photo using a Brother Printer

    I am unable to print color photos from i photo using a Brother MFC-6490CW all in one.  The photos appear to be in grayscale.  I have checked the printer settings, but for some reason I am not able to access the color management on my printer from printer set up.  It only gives me the standard option.  I have spent hours checking Bother's website and Apple's and I am not able to come up with a valid answer.  I know that the color print works.  If I print something from the internet of from outlook it will print in color.  I know all of my cartridges are in working order, I have cleaned the print head on my Brother, but I am still not able to print photos in color!!!
    What puzzles me the most is why I am unable to really access the color management menu on my printer?  It just does not come up.  I have the option from paper handling to print photos, but this has nothing to do with the quality.  I have also tried printing the photo from an Adobe PDF file and I still have the same problem.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?  Thank you.

    In the Print dialogue box click on the little triangle to the right of the name of the printer. That will expand the dialogue box.

    I am trying to print a color photo on my MacBook Pro from iPhoto (not using Photoshop) using Epson 2200 printer, and everything I do in the Color Matching and Print Settings results in a photo with a pink cast to it. What am I doing wrong?

    Have you checked the ink cartridges and made sure the nozzles are clear? Are you able to print from outside of iPhoto with the correct color?
    Try the following: make temporary copy of the library and do the following:
    1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
    2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
    3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
    NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

  • Q: How do I Mask/Layer a color photo with a black and white photo?

    This is what I want to do. I've done it before but cannot remember for the life of me how to do it again. I want to put a color photo under (its own) black and white photo and then erase or remove or something (I can't remember the tool to do it) but I want to be able to see some of the color photo in my black and white photo. For example, say I have a pic of the Disneyland Castle. I want to make the pic black and white and then with a layer or mask (whichever one) have the exact colors of the picture underneith it show up after I have used the paint brush to remove the black and white...is anyone understanding me? When I did it before I know I did it in only a few steps, it wasn't super complicated, and I'm probably stupid for not knowing how to do it now. Thanks!
    Lindsey Henry

    Lindsey,
    First, look at the Channels in the B/W. Probably, you can use one of those as a Selection and then as a Layer Mask. If not perfect, then you can likely get close. If you need to, you might want to Blend more than one of those Channels.
    If you have an issue "collecting" the Channels, just get your B/W into a separate Image, and then drag individual Channels back to your composite image, and use them, as is necessary.
    Hope that some of those ideas are useful,
    Hunt
    BTW - turn OFF the color for Channels, so that you can see them as B/W, as that will help you see their makeup.

  • Color Photo

    Every once in a while I see someone has posted a picture to a site where they can get help with a technique. In addition to the black and white question I previously posted, I have a color photo that I really like but it's not a high quality photo. It's a bit grainy and a little overexposed (the sunlight areas are blown out). How do I go about posting this for some expert help? This is all very new to me--I'm stretching beyond my scrapbooking skills! So please consider me a NEWBIE!
    Barbara,
    The color dodge and burning did help the Black and White photo. Thanks for the tip!
    Debbie

    Debbie,
    I must admit that I cheated a little bit as far as this forum is concerned because I used Photoshop CS2. I'm not sure if the exposure adjustment was added in Photoshop Elements 4 or not. I haven't used Photoshop Elements since version 2. You could probably do about the same thing with another Levels adjustment layer and a Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer and just keep adjusting.
    Another thing you can try on this image. Add a new empty layer and change the blending mode to Overlay. Then, use a paint brush, opacity of about 20 percent and choose black for the color and just paint on the empty layer where you want to darken the image. See if that helps you fix the problem with the face.

  • Using layers to combine color photo over lined paper - color loss

    I'm trying to do a guest book design for my mom's wedding. I have a photo that I want to combine over lined paper (created w/ Word and scanned. Saved as PDF). I was going to change the opacity of the photo to make it lighter while also bringing in the lines of the image below. I renamed the photo so it was no longer background, selected it, copied and pasted over my white, lined image and the color photo then became a grainy black and white. Alternatively, I could have put the photo over a white background and changed the opacity to lighten it and then drawn lines on the image but this did not work as the lines did not come out uniform. Would really appreciate help!!! I have a couple of PSE books but am still stuck. I'm using PSE 12.
    Thanks!

    Assuming your lined image is black lines on white background, place the lined image above the picture in the Layers Palette. Change the Opacity of the lined image to Multiply. The lines will appear and the picture unchanged.
    This is an old version of PSE so my Layers Palette will look different from yours, but the result should be the same.
    Is this what you are trying to do?

  • When I save a filtered photo from my iphone (filtered with "Tonal") onto my desktop into iPhoto, the filter dissappears and its saved as a standard color photo. Is there a reason why and way I can save it as is?

    When I save a filtered photo from my iphone (filtered with "Tonal") onto my desktop into iPhoto, the filter dissappears and its saved as a standard color photo. Is there a reason why and way I can save it as is?

    The reason is that Apple screwed up and despite threads for this issue dating back several months, there is no fix.  It's outrageous -- a dozen or so photos that I just took got completely screwed up because of this.  There isn't even a way to replicate the effects in iPhoto without major guesswork and tweaking.
    I mean this isn't even something that should be an issue.  How Apple thought that a user would want his filters to disappear is beyond me.  I mean it's so absolutely counterintuitive that I'm baffled that such a destructive 'feature' could've made it through.
    So much for Apple's quality control!  They'll forever say it's intentional and part of the 'lossless' design where the effects aren't permanently applied, but there should be an option.  Some users want their filters to stay when they take them.
    In fact, ALL USERS WANT THE FILTERS TO STAY.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
    The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
    Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
    There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
    You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
    In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
    You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
    Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a general summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
    ☞ Copy a particular line of text to the Clipboard.
    ☞ Paste into the window of another application.
    ☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
    ☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
    These are not specific instructions; just an overview. The details are in parts 7 and 8 of this comment. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time.
    5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
    You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. Load this linked web page (on the website "Pastebin.") The title of the page is "Diagnostic Test." Below the title is a text box headed by three small icons. The one on the right represents a clipboard. Click that icon to select the text, then copy it to the Clipboard on your computer by pressing the key combination command-C.
    If the text doesn't highlight when you click the icon, select it by triple-clicking anywhere inside the box. Don't select the whole page, just the text in the box.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    Click anywhere in the Terminal window to activate it. Paste from the Clipboard into the window by pressing command-V, then press return. The text you pasted should vanish immediately.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
    and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
    If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
    [Process started]
            Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
            Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
            The test results are on the Clipboard.
            Please close this window.
    [Process completed]
    The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
    Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
    12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
    At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
    If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak for themselves, not for me. The test itself is harmless, but whatever else you're told to do may not be. For others who choose to run it, I don't recommend that you post the test results on this website unless I asked you to.
