Shading screen captures with drop-shadows

Hi there, everyone.
I have a bunch of screen-captures (.png) that I need to darken/shade so I can highlight a particular button or text box. The trouble is that these screens all come with a surrounding drop shadow, which I don't want to darken/shade. The images are all of different dimensions, but the drop-shadow is always the same, so I was hoping to insert a gray box (with rounded corners, in case that matters) via script or action that is a fixed number of pixels (x by y) smaller than the canvas (and a couple pixels north of center).
Anybody know how to do this, or have a better idea?
Thanks!
Dave

On the Mac at least those window-shadows are transparent and have RGB-values of 0/0/0, so one need not mask them out if one clipping masks a black layer to the window’s screenshot and reduces that layer’s transparency according to taste. (Clipping Mask can be created by setting »grouped« for the top layer to »true« in JavaScript.)
Edit: Sorry, I assumed you were talking about screenshots of single windows, but you probably mean screenshots of the whole desktop, so above would be of no use to you.

  • Importing a .psd file - getting weird effects with drop shadows!! HELP!

    Hi all,
I'm trying to import a psd file as my site and then animate each page.
I have each page set up as a different layer and am importing each page as a movie clip so  i can animate each one separately.
The problem is that i have some images on each page that have drop shadows ( i have flattened these in photoshop so there is no longer the blending options layers attached). When flash imports all the layers it obviously has all of them visible at the same time initially.
When i then go through and separate each page to show at different points in the timeline, the images with drop shadows are now showing the image that was underneath it on import, instead of the drop shadow. Difficult to explain, but if you imagine a page with a square in the middle. That square has a drop shadow along two edges which is a slight shading. On a different page (on the layer underneath) there is just a big image of the sea (could be anything). When i import them, the page with the square is sitting directly on top of the page with the image of the sea. I separate these in the timeline so they show at different points, but when it's just the page with the square showing (the page with the sea isn't showing at this point), instead of the nice shading for the drop shadow, in it's place is the thin part of the image of the sea that was initially under the shading for the drop shadow....
Can anyone suggest what is happening and why, and how to quickly fix it in Flash. It took me AGES to import the whole site and all the pages, but now all the movieclips are completely useless because all the drop shadows are messed up with the images that were importing underneath them???!
I'm in a real rush here too, so any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks.

How was the original art created? Was the original RGB or CMYK? What is the resolution of the Photoshop file? Flash only works well with RGB and 72 pixel per inch resolution. If your original art is not set this way, then Flash will attempt to convert it as it imports it. Flash uses the sRGB color space. You'll get the best color translation if your Photoshop file is using this color preference.

  • Lines around image with drop shadow

    Hello,
I am currently using Illustrator CS 5.1 and am having an issue with my PDF files. I have a graphic that I am building and when I import an image, place a clipping mask around it and then add a drop shadow to it, everything works fine and looks exactly as I want it on screen. However, when I save the document as a pdf, a hazy white line appears around the edges of the image. However, the line is not on the clipping mask itself, instead it is on the square edges of the unmasked version of the image. So when I have 10 masked items on the page with drop shadows, I'm getting 10 faint white squares around each of the images which looks terrible. Has anyone else experienced this? Any recommendations/solutions?
    Thanks in advance!
    Wil

Also change your acrobat settings to show overprint preview always.
If this comes back in Illustrator PDFs, Print >> Advanced >> Slide tranparency flattener to raster >> done , then save.

  • How to place multiple images in batch with drop shadow effects on room backgrounds at the same position?

I want to place multiple images of hand paintings with drop shadow effects on room backgrounds to make them look as if the paintings are hanged on the room walls. I know how to do it one by one, but that takes time and I want to do it in batch at once.
I am quite a beginner for adobe photoshop CS6. I belive such an automated task is possible through 'Automated Batch' function and/or 'Create Droplet' function. Kindly share your expert opinion.

If you want to go with Batch I would recommend creating an Action of more or less these steps:
    • set the resolution to the same as the background image’s
    • change the image from Background Layer to regular Layer if necessary
    • convert it to a Smart Object
    • add a Drop Shadow Layer Style to the image (do not use Global Angle)
    • place the background image (File > Place …)
    • move it behind the image layer
    • Image > Reveal All
    • make Selection from that layer’s transparency (cmd-click its icon in the Layers Panel) and use Image > Crop
    • select and transform the image layer to fit the intended position
This would naturally work out best if the images had the same size and proportions.
For the reflection on the floor duplicate the image, flip it vertically, move it in position and reduce its opacity to maybe 10%.
Realistically you may have to hide it partially behind the pillows, a Vector Mask would be an option.

  • Screen Capture with Video of Presenter

How do I make a screen capture with a video of the presenter (me). Is this built into captivate? It is simple with Camtasia. I could not find this option in captivate. Does it exist?

Sorry, doesn't exist in Captivate. Perhaps try Adobe Presenter Video Creator.
Sounds like you already have Camtasia, I'd stick with that for this type of work. Actually, if you want full motion video, Camtasia is the better choice, Especially when it comes to the editing process.
Captivate rocks for the slide by slide capturing and creating interactive "video" type output. But Camtasia leaves it in the dust when it comes to the full motion video. Camtasia sucks for creating interactive type videos that Captivate does. Just different tools for different workflows.

  • Graphical error with drop shadow on new i7 MacBook Pro 13"

I have noticed a problem on my new MacBook Pro with the drop shadow on my finder and application windows. Difficult to describe but a picture will let you see what is happening.
As you move a window around it kind of "erases" the shadow behind it.
This behaviour is not specific to xPad or Terminal (both of which were running when I took this screenshot). I've seen it on Firefox and when a Finder window is in the foreground. Usually selecting a screen in the background fixes this but it is unusual and I have some concerns especially as this machine is only about a month old.
Any idea? Or has anyone seen this before?

I have the exact same problem, but only when I hook my macbook pro up to an external monitor.
My post is displayed here https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3276589
Could you do me a favour and show me how the website beanandberry.co.uk appears for you? Does the background show up?
I think it's probably a graphics card driver problem. However I did update my RAM recetnyl and I'm going to reset the cache to see if it does anything.
If successful I'll post something again.

  • Odd problem with drop shadows

I shot some footage of a guy in front of a green screen. I got an awesome key and I put him in front of a white background. In order to add a more animated look I want to put a drop shadow behind him. The problem I am experiencing is when I add a cross dissolve in between two cuts. When I add the transition the white background flashes grey and then dips back to white. Any ideas?

I've seen this happen before. It's possible it's a "left over" render that's stuck in FCP's brain. Try highlighting the clips, Control + B on them, then Control + B again. sometimes that will delete the render file associated with that portion.
Or you can try relaunching FCP.

  • Screen capture with keynote presentations

After switching from PP to Keynote a year ago, my only disappointment is that I can't do screen-capture of my presentations. With PP, I could use the screen capture program SnapzPro to make a movie of my presentation, with voice over. Typically, if a particular slide didn't go well in class, I would record myself talking through the animations (bringing on pieces of a diagram one at a time, for example), and then post the resulting video on my course website. Doesn't work with Keynote, however, and the SnapzPro people don't have any info about when this problem might be solved from their end. Is there some other program I should be using? Does Apple itself make anything that will do the trick? Is solving this problem something Apple is working on? Or, am I stuck redoing my slides in PP?

    Hi there
I read your post. I use Snapz Pro X too, and I was surprised to learn it doesn't work with Keynote. Here's a possible work around.
Record your voice-over on any recorder and export to itunes or if you have sound studio loaded on your mac, use it. From the inspector you can access you voice-over for use in your project.
I've recorded a voice-over in sound studio for a keynote project. From sound studio I export to my desktop. From the desktop I drag and drop the audio onto the slide I need the voice-over on. This works well for me. try it.
Once you've got it set the way you like, export the Keynote project to QT or whatever format you like. In QT, the project will play like a movie. You can save the file, burn to a disk, or post to a web page.
    I hope this helps

  • Pages, printing: still problem with drop shadows . Frustrated.  :

    Hi -
I've spent most of the afternoon trying to get my Pages document to print properly.
I am experiencing the drop-shadow issue :heavy black clump instead of artfully placed& delicate. Printouts do not resemble what is onscreen or in preview etc.
Having read through the forums; the links; the (cruddy) Pages Help and manual; installed new HP offficejet all-in-one software...
I still get the same result.
Most of the threads don't quite fit my situation.
For instance: Several comments have to do with older versions of things. Because I do have Pages 2, I am on Tiger OS X10.4.7 , upgrading is not my problem.
One of the threads had fairly explicit directions to make a new filter in Coloursync which led all the way to a "change resolution" menu but didn't offer advice on what resolution
    modification to make. rrrrrrrr..
I am pretty lost at this point and really just want to print out a document that looks like what I have designed.
    What? How? Help! Please?

tried to print directly from Pages
If printing directly from Pages does not work then it must be an aspect of your printer. Some printers have a black and white setting that might not read shadows (which are more like greyscale) With the doc opened press ⌘ +p and browse through the options of the printer's pulldown menu and see if there are any settings that might be incorrect. (Check, in particular, your 'color sync' and 'print settings' options in the pull down menu.)

  • Having a strange problem with Drop Shadows in Ai CS5

    Hi there Adobe experts!
I have tried eveything... this is my first post here, but it's my only hope. I have a project where I apply drop shadows to linked images to give a sense of depth. A few days ago, the drop shadows just stopped feathering. It doesn't matter what the blur is set to, its just one colour. Transparency still applies. Here's the kicker...I can open files with applied drop shadows to them and they look fine. But if I try to edit that existing shadow, even by 0.0001 of a pt, it will lose its feathering.
I've deleted the AiPrefs file, and played with just about every setting in document raster effects settings. I have no clue what would cause this.
Oh, and whatever the issue is, it starts in my computer, and then attaches to the files... I sent the ai file to a friend, and when he tried to add drop shadows, they screwed up on his machine too. But it isn't the file. I've attached a brand new (and CMYK, just to see if that would make a difference...) file of a sphere showing the problem. Even with the blur super high, the shadow remains flat and monochromatic.
Any geniuses seen this before or have a remote clue how to solve this one?
    Thanks in advance,
    Luke

All my ram is tripple channel DDR3, same clock speeds, but some is 2GB and some is 4GB.
I just pulled the 2GB sticks (which I had in originally) and left in the 4GB sticks (the ones I recently purchased) and the problem goes away. It's quite odd, I've never had a problem like this before with any other application. I know it's not the best thing in the world to have different types of RAM installed, but my motherboard supports it and I've never had a problem doing it before.
I would be interested to see if this problem is reproducable in the OP's senario, or if this problem can be reproduced by others.
Conclusion: the 2GB sticks work on their own, and the 4GB sticks work on their own. I definitly would not call this a hardware problem, it's an adobe problem and they need to fix their software.

  • White box behind transparent images with drop shadow in InDesign CC 2014 (v.10) but not in InDesign CC (v.9)

    Hi all,
Please can you help? No matter what settings I use in my print options in InDesign CC 2014 (v.10), ALL transparent images with a drop shadow are printing with a white box behind the image. If I remove the drop shadow, all prints fine. I know this is an old issue that happens with ID sometimes but I have been lucky enough to never have had it happen to me before! (All images are regular flattened TIFF images with clipping paths).
Also, feathered edges are not printing correctly and are sharp instead of feathered.
When I export the document to IDML and open it up in InDesign CC (v.9) all prints perfectly with no white boxes and feathered edges prints perfectly as well. I have compared all of the print settings (including color management, transparency flattener, etc.) between both versions and they are exactly the same. I am printing to a Xerox color laser printer. Can anyone offer any advice?
    Thank you so much,
    Christine

Okay...false alarm! It turns out that the issue was with my PRINTER settings (the settings you customize after hitting the “Printer” button at the bottom of the Print dialogue box in ID CC. I thought I had triple checked this but it seems there was one setting I missed earlier…adjusting the print brightness seemed to cause the issue. SO GLAD to know it was not InDesign…20 or so sheets/prints later….and thankful to know what was causing the issue! Thank you so much Steve for helping at any rate:) Much appreciated:)

  • Master page objects with drop shadows crossing over spreads

    Mac 10.5.4 - INDesign CS3
I have a book file that is giving me a pretty hard time. There are several master page spreads that do not show as spreads in the book file. The left page from one set of masters with the right page from another set. There is a grouped row of circles that has drop shadow applied that appears on several master spreads. This is built as two groups that meet in the gutter to give the appearance of a row all the way across the spread. When the group is on the gutter between the two pages of the master spread, The object will show up on the both pages of the book spread, on top of the data from the left page master. If we shut off the drop shadow, no problem. If we move the group 0p5 away from the gutter no problem. The problem is that in the end we want this element to have a drop shadow and to run into the gutter.
Does InDesign count the spread of the object effect as part of the object itself? That seems like what is happening. Is there a fix (work around) for this?

The easiest workaround I know of is to paste the object with the drop shadow inside another box such that you can clip it at the gutter. We've cursed this "feature" for years.

  • InDesign cs6 crashes when exporting objects with drop shadows to interactive PDF

I am using the trial version of InDesign CS6 on a mac OSX 10.7.4  I need to export my document as an interactive PDF. I have found that the export works fine so long as none of the objects within my document have a drop shadow. However, if I add a drop shadow to any object (text, images, or video) InDesign will crash when I try to export. I am adding the drop shadow by selecting the object and then choosing Object > Effects > Drop Shadow. Is there another method I should be using to add the shadow if I want to export to an Interactive PDF?

Hi Peter, thanks for the response. Yes, I have tried creating a new blank project and adding one text object with a drop shadow and then exporting to Interactive PDF, and I experienced  the same result. I tried replacing my preferences as you suggested and found that it did not have any affect.
I continued developing my InDesign document without using any drop shadows and began to experience the same type of crashing under two more circumstances. 1. When relinking assets in my Links panel. 2. When exporting to interactive PDF with interactive objects that are being clipped (I get a warning telling me I have clipped objects before I export; when I click export I experience the same crash.) I have tried exporting the same file to a print (non-interactive) PDF and experienced no crashing.
I thought I should mention that I am using a retina display mac book pro with 16GB RAM. Could my graphics cards or the configureation of my machine be causing my issue?
    Thanks so much,
