Shadow clipping in Lightroom 3: how can it be avoided?

Hi all,
I'm new to the forum, and I hope some of you can aid to clarify a doubt and to solve a problem. I' m starting to catalog my scanned images, and many of them are Tiff files with embedded input profiles (in Prophoto RGB color space). Many of these images show clipped shadows in Lightroom 3, and this is apparent by the histogram (I know, this could be misleading, I have read previous messages about problems with the histograms in Lr); furthermore, these shadows cannot be recovered by increasing exposure or in any other way. However the same images, opened in Photoshop Cs4, do not show any shadow clipping, and the same dark areas that in Lr3 appear to be clipped, here can be "opened" by increasing exposure. This problem is apparently limited to Tiff files (with embedded color space), I did not see any problem with DNG files.
Someone know if there is a way to avoid the problem, and to have unclipped shadows in Lightroom?
Regards, Maurizio

There have been many people reporting here that all shadowrendering issues
in Lightroom completely disappeared after selecting a matrix profile instead
of a LUT profile. I don't have the problem myself, but it clearly is real.
Lightroom cannot grok certain monitor profiles correctly that Photoshop can.
It might be something specific to the calibrator software that they were
using. Granted what happens generally for those folks reporting issues is
that the shadows are too light, posterized or even have a tint to them
compared to the rendering in PS. I have not heard of anybody getting clipped
shadows. That really sounds like a black level being dialed in where it
should have been zero for tiff files.

In Lightroom mobile how can move photos within the collection????

What you can do is to move (or copy) a photo form one collection to another. This can be triggered via the top right app menu item from grid view. Same menu is available when you open up an image for editing. Hope that helps. -Guido

If you just need a copy of the software, then download the trial copy of Lr available from Adobe. On entering your serial number it will then become a full copy.

What, exactly, are 'encoded assets'? Why does removing them resolve problems? How can they be avoided in the first place?

As I understand it, encoding fomats your digital video clips and photos (assets) into Standard DVD mp2 format so that it can be burned to a DVD.  If there has been an error in the encoding process, then you remove the old encoded assets and start over.  There are numberous reasons why there can be errors in the encoding process.

  • How can this query avoid full table scans?

It is difficult to avoid full table scans in the following query because the values of column STATUS reiterant numbers. There are only 10 numbers values for the STATUS column (1..10)
But the table is very large. there are more than 1 million rows in it. A full table scanning consumes too much time.
How can this query avoid full table scans?

Your code had an extra AND. I also replaced the "not equal" operator, which has display problems with the forum software
    SELECT SYNC,CUS_ID
       INTO V_SYNC,V_CUS_ID
      FROM CONSUMER_MSG_IDX
    WHERE CUS_ID = V_TYPE_CUS_HEADER.CUS_ID AND
           ADDRESS_ID = V_TYPE_CUS_HEADER.ADDRESS_ID AND
STATUS != 8;Are you sure this query is doing a table scan? Is there an index on CUS_ID, ADDRESS_ID? I would think that would be mostly unique. So I'm not sure why you think the STATUS column is causing problems. It would seem to just be a non-selective additional filter.

  • Premiere CS5 import avi clips without sound. How can I import avi clips with sound without convert?

    Dear Adobe Forum,
I have the following problem, please help:
I would like to import avi clips in adobe premiere. All clips have the same avi codec. But unfortunately my adobe premiere does not import the sound of a few
avi clips. It is wired because about 10 out 70 avi clips which have all the same avi codec does not work with sound in premiere CS5. In the timline premiere import the video and audio line but there are no audio waves in the about 10 avi clips. additonally premiere plays the 10 avi clips in the source monitor without sound. Furthermore when I open the 10 avi files without adobe premiere they have sound, but with premiere there are no sound in the 10 avi clips.
What can I do, so that I can import all avi files with sound. I do not want to convert each of the avi files because then they have not a good quality and it is to complicated and it takes to much time to convert all files in this video project and in the other video project in my future.
Consequently How can I import all avi files so that they have immediately sound? Do I have to change some premiere settings?
    Thank you in advance

  • Purchased lightroom 5 before purchasing CC, technically I can install up to 4 lightrooms. How can I install lightroom without signing in to CC?

Purchased lightroom 5 before I got myself a CC subscription.
I have maxed out on the installation on 2 computers with the CC account. Now I wish to activate my original lightroom standalone license.
But apparently I need to sign in to CC to install lightroom, which creates a conflict with my existing 2 computers. How can I install the standalone license?
    Thanks all.

Download Light room, during activation choose the option to use the serial number.
It should work, if it says that activation count is over, then you can try by deactivating CC , then install the standalone, then you can activate back the CC.

  • Vertical Clips Distorted in iMovie--How Can I Avoid the Distortion???

I have a number of vertical clips (.mov) that I would like to include in a movie with the majority of clips which are horizontal. Although the vertical clips play fine (if I just play them on my computer), they become distorted when I import them into iMovie. iMovie changes their aspect ratio rather than scales them down to fit (leaving black bars on the left and right).
Any ideas on what I can do to keep the original aspect ration with vertical orientation so that everyone in the movie does not look short and fat (the result of the distortion).
    Thanks for your help.

David pointed to some excellent sites to help explain masks. QuickTime lets you do lots of things with masks, so it's not surprising your task is a bit different than most I saw there. To complicate matters, the QuickTime 7 user interface is different than the QT interface shown in those sites.
Technically, a mask allows you to remove a portion of the video image. That's not exactly your goal if I understand it. Instead, you want to add to the image to prevent iMovie from resizing your vertically-shaped video when you import it. You want to make your video the normal size and shape so iMovie won't resize it, right?
To do that, you need to place your vertical video in front of a black background that's the "proper" size. Essentially, you need to build a video sandwich that's the proper size for iMovie. When iMovie imports this video sandwich, it will accept it "as is" instead of resizing it. Then your video will play vertically in iMovie against a black background.
    Here's how:
(This requires QuickTime Pro. These instructions are for QuickTime 7.):
    • In any graphics program, create a black image that's 640x480. Save it as a PICT. (I will assume your video is smaller than 640x480. If it's not, please say.)
    • In the Finder, make a duplicate of your vertical movie.
    • Open the duplicate in QuickTime Pro. From now on, we'll refer to this as "Vertical Movie".
    • Open the PICT in QT Pro. Select Edit > Copy. Close the PICT. The black picture is now on the Mac Clipboard.
    • Activate the Vertical Movie window. Choose Edit > Select All.
    • To add the black background to Vertical Movie, choose Edit > Add To Selection and Scale. That Pastes the PICT as a new layer which plays exactly the same duration as the current selection in the movie. (That's why we Selected All.)
    • The black layer now covers the video so you can't see it, and the playhead is at the end of the movie.
    • Move the playhead to the start of the movie.
    • To be able to see the video, we need to bring it forward in front of the black layer. To do that, choose Window > Show Movie Properties. This window shows the properties of each track in the movie, including Video Track 1 (your vertical video) and Video Track 2 (the black layer).
    • Click on "Video Track 1". Click on the "Visual Settings" tab below the track list.
    • At the bottom of the window change the Layer setting by clicking on the DOWN arrow just right of the Layer textbox. You want to make the Layer number smaller. -2 will probably do it. When the layer is correct, the video layer will appear. (If it doesn't appear, keep fiddling with the Layer until it does.)
    • If the video layer isn't centered against the black background, change its Offset settings so it is centered.
    • Save Vertical Movie. You've built your sandwich.
    • To make a movie iMovie will love, export the Vertical Movie sandwich to a DV Stream. To do that, choose File > Export. In the top popUp menu (at the bottom of the window) choose "Movie to DV Stream". In the bottom popUp, choose "DV NTSC 48 kHz". Assign a name and Save.
(Exporting "flattens" the movie so the vertical video and the black background merge into a single layer.)
    • Import the DV Stream to iMovie.

  • Looking at External SSD Drive for Lightroom Editing - How Can I Set This Up and Which Drive?

I'd like to purchase an external SSD drive for Lightroom editing and am hoping somebody can provide a recommendation for me.
I'm using a FW800 G-Drive to store my Lightroom Library and have been using this drive to edit.  I'd like to add an external SSD drive for editing photographs an am looking for recommendations on which drive and the best way to set this up.  I plan on having a 3rd (and maybe 4th) to save both the FW800 files and working SSD drive files as a backup.
    Any recommendations are sincerely appreciate.

I believe I was loading a preview file to 100%.  I think maybe I should just use what I have and work with it.  It's much faster than my 7 year old MBP performed that's for sure.
I was just wondering if I could spend a few hundred for an external Thunderbolt or USB 3 drive to speed up my productivity.  With the full time job and the kids, I have a little time to work on photography.  I'd love to increase my output.  I'm more than willing to spend the money on the TB or USB 3 if it would help.
The specs on the camera say 24.1 million pixels:  24.6 MB.  The raw files are
    NEF (RAW): 14 bit, compressed

  • The audio in my movie clips drops out sporadically, How can I fix this?

I have a collaboration of video clips from a baseball game that I put together in iMovie 09. I added a background song to play over the clips, I have the (video) volume turned down for some of my videos so that you can hear the background music, but when I try to turn the (video) volume up to hear the cheering at the game over the music, there is no sound at all! If I pause the playback and resume it, I will hear the cheering in the video like I want.
Pausing then resuming to get my sounds to work correctly is tangible, but the real problem is that it cuts out when I am exporting to iTunes or YouTube as well.
    Please Help! Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Some times simply quitting any and all sound Apps (iTunes, QuickTime, any audio player) restarting often solves the problem.  An SMC reset might also work.
If the laptop went to sleep with headphones or external speakers plugged into the headphone jack loss of audio on wake can result. In future do not sleep with headphones or speakers attached.

  • Convert PDF to Word - Tables are in Text Boxes using Acrobat 11. How can this be avoided?

    Hello All,
I am using Acrobat 11 to convert PDF's to MS Word .doc or .docx. The tables are converted correctly but they are inside Text Boxes. My documents have hundreds of tables and I cant manually remove the text boxes.
Is there a way to remove the Text Box that contains each table?
    Regards Paul

    Hello Anubha,
My apologies.  Hopefully you can see the table is inside a text box. The Acrobat 7 doesn't behave like this, nor do some of the other PDF conversion products.
In my output there is 700 pages with average of 3 tables per page. A manual workaround to get the tables out of the text boxes wouldn't be practicable.
Can you confirm that this is not the expected behaviour. I thought I recently saw a video showing this behaviour as standard for Acrobat 11.

  • RejectedExecutionException - why does it apear and how can it be avoided ?

    Hello,
I sometimes get a RejectedExecutionException e.g. if I start a Windows Program in a separate Thread using a Windows start command ( " .../progname.exe ") for asynchronous execution.
( The windows program to be started is the VideoLan Media Player invoked via C:\Tools\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe - operating system is Windows XP SP2 with all updates and fixes).
It seems, that this Exception does not do any harm - the Java Program runs as expected with no other errors and also VideoLan runs correctly.
But anyway, I would like to understand, what causes this Exception to be thrown.
There is no reference to a statement in my program in the error message stack printed by this exception.
I therefore have no indication, why this "Thread.run" causes the exception.
I just can locate the statement in my program where the thread is started.
