"Shadow" strip on bottom of iBook 14" screen?

Hey all,
I recently bought an iBook real cheap off a friend of mine. It was (and is) in almost perfect condition, and had no dead pixels or anything wrong with the screen that I could see when I bought it. A few days ago, when I changed my desktop, I noticed a barely noticable small strip on the very bottom of the display that can only be described as a shadow - It makes whatever is under it a tad darker. It doesn't "fade" like a show does though; the top just "ends" and the screen returns to normal. It's only a few pixels high, and stops about a half inch from either side of the monitor. At the ends, it sinks down into points within a few pixels. It's important to note that this "shadow" is perfectly symetrical.
I've drawn up a mockup of what I see in the below image. Note the sides of the bar and the symetry. The scale is a bit off - it's much thinner, and the grey is a strong exaduration so you can see the shape I'm talking about.

Has anyone seen this? It doesn't appear to be growing, and the perfect symmetry and angled ends leads me to believe that it's almost meant to be there. It's so thin and barely visible that it doesn't affect the usage at all, but I'm curious what could be causing this. Is there a part under the screen at the bottom that would cause this effect?
Thanks for your help!

Well, let's hope the computer is well-behaved at least!
In some desktop computers, when you put an image up on the
screen, you may see a comment that an image may be covering
the first desktop image. Such as a pattern being there first, and
an image chosen later. But in OSX and on newer Macs, you don't
get that kind of a message and having two images (where they
may be seen together) is unlikely or nearly impossible.
If you get the VGA adapter and an external display of supported
resolution, you could see if the image you view in the LCD also
appears in the other external display when at the same
resolution. In some cases, you can change the resolutions and
some edge artifacts are unseen; at the expense of how things
appear you want to see. But you get the idea, to check the
video output to see if the video circuit is projecting the grey
artifact, or if the LCD is burned-in.
In any event, let's hope it keeps working!

  • Appleworks6.2.9 "Save As" screen is too large for my iBook 14" screen

What can I do to make the Appleworks6 Save As screen fit my iBook 14" screen?
When I click the AppleWorks6 Save As, the screen is larger than my iBook screen. I can barely see the upper 1/8th of the Hide Extention, New Folder, Cancel and Save buttons. The resize button on the lower right edge of normal page is not visible. I can move the screen down and to the right and left but I cannot make the screen smaller because that button is beneath the bottom edge of my screen.
I also tried clicking the Green button at upper left corner of the page. Nothing happens. It just fills the whole screen and doen not get smaller.
I do not have this problem on my iMac 15" screen.

I hope you deleted more than just the com.apple.appleworks.plist. There are also 3 preference files in the AppleWorks folder that is in the same location as that .plist that need to be deleted all at the same time. All of this is detailed in my user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly. Since I or someone else refer to this time a couple of times a day, it shouldn't have taken to page 8 to find it unless you were searching just for ".plist" & not preferences.

  • Bottom 2/3 of screen messes up when pressing on right side of frame

My MBP is under warranty, but it's having a screen issue that I have already sent it into Apple for repair once before. I'm figuring out what causes the problem though. It appears that when the right side of the screen's frame flexes (the 3/8" piece of aluminum) or when I push about 1/3 of the way up from the bottom, it causes the bottom 2/3 of the screen to fade to black. It's so strange. It first started manifesting itself as flickering in the screen where stripes of what was on the screen (left to right stripes) would start getting jumbled and jump around the screen. Very hard to describe.
Anybody know what's around the point just above the right side hinge that would affect the bottom 2/3 of the screen? I want to make sure I can adequately describe this to Apple when I reopen a trouble ticket on this problem.
    Thanks-
    John

I am having the same issue on my Santa Rosa MBP (A1226).
My computer is no longer under warranty and I was wondering if replacing the LCD panel (and not the entire display assembly which includes the hinge assembly, etc.) should resolve this problem.
    Thanks.

  • Shadows showing from bottom of display

This morning when I turned on my Early 2008 15" MacBook Pro (2.6 GHz, 4GB SDRAM, Mac OS 10.6.8) eleven shadows appeared eminating from the bottom of my display. It looks like a light from below the machine was shining through a picket fence. The shadows gradually fade to where they are barely discenable around the approximate vertical middle of the screen. I assume it is a backlighting issue but don't know if there's anything that can be done without a major expense.

I am prepared for a failure of what I suppose is either my graphics card or display. I'm doing frequent backups.
In addition to the occasional "picket fence" shadows across the bottom of my display, I have had a few instances where there is zero brightness when I start up and reach the log-in screen. (Using ambient light I can just barely tell that the log-in window is present; I can even log on with a best guess of where my cursor is but the screen remains dim).
In both cases, a restart corrects the issue at that time. Unfortunately, as you noted, it probably means that something is slowly going bad but, until it does, I'm able to work around it by just restarting. I haven't yet tried connecting an external monitor to see if that shows the same symtom (in which case I could be pretty sure it's the graphics card and not my display) but I'll do that if a restart stops solving the issue.
Trying to be philosophical and looking at the eventual total failure as the excuse I need to get a new computer!

  • Shadowed stripes on display

The display of the MacBook Pro that I'm using shows permanently slightly shadowed stripes - each with 7cm height X 2 cm length, better perceptible on white background, all across the bottom of the display. This is not affected by any software adjustment. What can I do? Is this a reason to return the computer for replacement, since it is under warranty?

This anomaly seems to be variable:
sometimes it disappears completely, depending on the start up of the computer.
It seems to be produced erratically when the display is initiated by the system.
It may disappear during a session if I choose Apple > Sleep, and seconds later, return to work.

  • Intermittent shadow stripes on my 15" Macbook

I have a 2008 15" Macbook Pro running the most current OS - 10.6.8.  Although the gray screen at boot-up is evenly lit and looks fine, I am intermittently getting shadow stripes on my desktop when my account is logged in.  It looks as though the display lighting is edge lighting (I don't know if that's the case) and some of the LED's are off; there are shadowy gaps spaced evenly between points of light.  It doesn't happen all the time and usually logging out and logging in again either helps or completely eliminates the problem.
I don't think I have a hardware display problem since the lighter gray screen at boot up is fine.  I recently opened the machine to put in a new drive and fix a fan but this is looking more like a software problem than a hardware problem.  However, I'm not sure if I had the shadows before the machine was opened.
I've looked at the display control panels and anything else in Preferences that might affect display lighting with no luck.
Has anybody else experienced this and what was the solution?
    Thank you.

Really, this is a question better suited for the forum: http://www.ripdifferent.com/phpbb2/index.php

Oops, I forgot a step between 7 and 8 ... before syncing the iPhone I need to explicitly send the document back to iTunes on the iPhone, or the changes won't come over at all ...
and then one more thing ... Numbers on iOS does NOT recognize a number of key features of the OSX app, such as conditional formatting ... so after editing my document on iOS and syncing it back to OSX on my Mac, all of those settings are lost (no more conditional formatting, have to do it all over again)
What am I doing wrong ?

  • How to put a repeatable shadow at the bottom of a wine bottle

I'll select an image of a bottle (beer or wine) and it's all nice and clean around the bottom, totally isolated from the background.  I've asked Photoshop savvy friends how to do this and they all have come up with some workaround that is not repeatable.  Check out this image from a wine makers' website:  the shadow at the bottom is the same from shot to shot and I'm sure is added at the bottom in post, not when the bottle was photographed.  How to do this?
Attached is an image of a bottle with shadow from the website and one of my own bottle images with no shadow.  Remember, it's got to be a repeatable shadow that I can add to any "finished" image and not have to worry about selecting around the nebulous outline of the shadow.  Thanks.

    1) create a circle shape
2)squish the circle down to give it its shape
3)Move the shape layer below the image layer
4)Convert the shape layer to a smart object
5)Apply a guassian blur to the shape
6)Reduce the opacity of the shape layer
7)reposition the shape layer if needed.
The above assumes the bottle is on its own layer with no background
If necessary to remove the white background you can you the quick selection tool to select the white and hit the delete key. To make sure the bottle will be on a transparent background, you must unlock the image layer by dragging its lock icon to the trashcan before hitting the delete key.
Once all the steps above are done, you can apply a new background by either filling a new layer with a color and moving that layer below all other layers.
    or
use the solid color adjustment layer and set its color to your choosing and then move that layer below all other layers.
Here is a quick example (logo of bottle has been pixelated)

  • Bottom-left part of screen loose, also no longer connects to Wi-Fi

First, the whole bottom-left of the screen of my brand-new 32gb iPod Touch is loose, and can easily be pushed in. There is also a bleeding effect of light from behind the screen. Will this be a problem? I've only had it since Christmas, so would I be able to get it replaced(for the money spent on this, there shouldn't be any problems like this)? I can't bring it to any apple store either, as there are none for thousands of kilometers.
Also, yesterday I connected my iPod to the computer to charge it, and now it no longer connects to my network. What gives?
So far, I've had more headaches than enjoyment from this...

Doesn't matter what orientation the ipad is in, it won't scroll up from the bottom.
All other screen functions work normally.

Settings/Control Center. There are two options which are pretty self-explanitory...one enables/disables access on the Lock Screen and one enables/disables access within apps/games.

  • I dropped my phone and the very bottom of the touch screen does not respond. would i need to get the screen replaced or is there another way?

I've dropped my phone quite often, and the back of the phone is cracked, but I haven't bothered to fix it. I dropped my phone again today, and a tiny bit chipped off near the top edge of my phone. Later when i got home, I couldn't unlock my phone except when I slid my finger across the very top of the arrow and it JUST opened. but I can't use the bottom now, so on the keyboard, I can't type with the space bar and anything else at the very bottom of the touch screen.

At Apple Store for $149 you can get a replacement iPhone 4 which will be just like New. Everything will work perfect and the there will be no chips or cracks. New battery and buttons too. Make Genius Reservation and take iPhone to Apple.
